I like how in the animated movie the Calendar Man got an atmosphere of his own. Jim Gordon and Batman are nervous being around him, and that makes the viewer uncomfortable too. Nobody says why he's put away, but he's still treated as a consultant for the most prolific serial killer the city has seen in years. Absolutely chilling.
It's rare for the female heroes/villains to get musculature that aligns with their male counterparts. Usually they're all just slightly toned, with inexplicably huge honkers.
Her design in this comic is totally ridiculous but that's why I like it lol, it's a shame they blew it off for a much more generic Catwoman design in the animated adaptation. (That goes for most of the aesthetic in the animated one actually.)
@MakeFood-sc4of yeah, there's no way she would be able to move like Catwoman with that much mass. There actually is a point at which your muscles can't get out of their own way. There's a reason you don't have Big Barda acrobatic and super flexible maneuvers
I just saw the panel after reading y’all’s comments… dude she’s not even that big at ALL wtf lol she’s not even half as muscular as a typical CrossFit girl
So, from what I understand, the first Holliday Killer was Gilda, who shot up Johnny V, the Irish crew and Falcone's bodyguard, Milos. Then, Harvey tried to kill Alberto but failed (notice how the glass of champagne is not coloured like the previous objects left by Holliday were, showing that the hit had failed and Alberto was alive). Alberto takes up the mantle and starts taking out Maroni's family, until he gets caught after killing Sal. And finally, Two-Face kills both Falcone and Vernon. My only question would be who killed Carla Viti?
I assumed that Alberto killed Carla and the coroner to keep them from revealing that he was still alive. Carla was investigating Alberto's death when she was killed, and then the coroner was killed the next month. We don't know for sure, but that's how I read it.
The only villain to truly outsmart Batman was the thug in the Animated Series that opened the door, saw him, closed the door, and told his fellow henchman that there was nothing in the room. And kept walking.
I love the fact we see the gradual manifestation of Two Face. At 6:30 during the destruction if the Falcone money, Harvey notes the mass amount of cash and it being untraceable then Harvey entertains the idea of just a small amount of this cash would be... only for Batman to cut him off. Dent's more criminal instincts are there under the surface but its built up perfectly. 5:18 Same could be said for the meeting that Catwoman spies on. Dent seems to take a bit of joy in Johnny Viti being made to finish with all his living. 'Two bullets to the head. You ask me it couldn't happen to a nicer guy.' Two Face gets the slow burn treatment. Great slow build storytelling.
In the movie when Dent is talking the two face persona in the hospital and someone comes in to ask if he's alright and the two face voice responds that he's fine *chefs kiss*
This is such an amazing story. The artwork's so important to it, as well, as absurd as it gets at times (hello Joker's teeth that have it's own area code....)
You guys are finally doing it ! I'm typing before I watch the video, I hope calendar man gets some respect for being interesting and mood setting for the plot
Hey Rob , loved your telling of this story ! It’s probably my favorite of all the Batman stories you’ve put out so far. Awhile back, I forget which video, you spoiled the sapranos, at least someone’s “death” and to that I have a question , that’ll probably never get replied to. Would you ever consider Movies/Tv shows Explained? I’m a delivery driver so listening to literally all of your videos makes a huge portion of the day go much faster and for all intents and purposes makes my day a whole lot better. I for one would love to hear your voice paraphrase an entire show in the course of a 3 hour long epic. Or even a bed time story for that matter. -Cheers m8🎉 (Btw I just finished The Sapranos so nothing is spoiled for me now)
Check out his other world with loeb, superman for all seasons, spiderman blue, daredevil yellow, hulk gray, Captain America white, and of course the sequel to this book, dark victory.
I remember the first time I read this story. Still have it on my shelf as well. Heck when I worked for a theatre we worked with the local comic shop to give it away during The Dark Knight release. A few copies at least. It was fun!
Thank you Rob, finally I get to see the clear version of the long halloween. I do think it was Harvey masquerading as Alberto though, not only he showed skill at disguising himself, but also his mental breakdown did not develop at that level in just one night 👀🤔
I've always loved "The Long Halloween"; I read it while recovering from a surgery in the hospital and it definitely helped my morale. Even the animated adaptation was pretty good.
So wait the ending in the animated version was true? With Gilda still being the holiday killer? Usually the animated universe changes things .. I guess it was a more comic accurate version. Now yes some plot details were changed like how she was going to marry a falcone originally before Harvey in the movie but the biggest twist remains the same?
Carmine Falcone usually is his own enemy. He sees himself as a Kingpin who believes crime can be managed; also a man of family values despite physically and emotionally abusing his son Alberto (even shaming him for going to college). Because he's bribed and blackmailed so many public figures it results in mass retaliatory violence in order to take him down, particularly the Supervillains that he brought in. Even in the recent Batman Movie he's officially brought down for killing a work girl/Selina's Roommate because he got so used to power he panicked losing it when Riddler started eliminating corrupted officials Falcone bought off. In the end Carmine's greed ends up killing him.
i don't know which version of falcone you're talking about, but the one from this comic definitely steered alberto toward a pampered collegiate life rather than his own, and seemed to pamper him, which alberto hated.
My brain is so weird. As soon as I heard how Gilda was an almost murder victim in that bomb... I knew it was her immediatly, then completely pushed that aside.
It would actually. Probably better than an empty bottle, which is a common rigged silencer. As long as you put it on the muzzle right, the idea is to reduce the compressed air blast (the pop of the shockwave) by essentially knocking it back into itself. No silencer reduces the sound to zero, but the goal is sound diffusion.
Somehow youtube just removed my ability to comment. And thats saying something because i really dont comment on videos at all. But the fact you are doing the long halloween just drew me to say this hands down is one of my favorite stories. I was motivated to watching the animated 2 part voiced by jensen ackles back when it was announced
I am sad. I started calling Captain Gordon as the Holiday Killer about the moment Rob said that the Holiday Killer was able to get close to all these individuals.
Amazing video Rob we appreciate it, and do you think the animated movie did a good job of representing the comic? Because I feel like it did a decent job with it.
Ive only ever heard of Killing Joke, Hush, Death in the Family , Knightfall, and Dark Knight Returns. Ive only ever recently heard of the Long Halloween
Funny thing is, I recently started reading Batman series as per the recommended Fandom and you decide to make a video after all these years on this. I've always been literature-lucky.
To answer your question Rob I believe that both Harvey and his wife were the holiday killers. If I’m not mistaken when she sees Harvey in the basement flipping the coin it doesn’t seem like she was concerned or surprised of his mental breakdown. When you marry someone the vows do include loving your spouse in sickness or in health. Gilda was well aware of Harvey’s condition and hated that his work pushed him to be split quite literally in two. She’s believed in both sides of Harvey Dent that crime had to be eliminated so she can be with her husband.
I feel like going down to hang out in a sewer while you've got 3rd degree burns all over your face would probably lead to a nasty infection.
Given that he was treated in a hospital, he's probably loaded with antibiotics and painkillers. Enough of those and you might end up anywhere, lol.
In fairness, it did heal all gross.
"You are my Apollo."
"I believe in Harvey Dent."
Phenomenal.
Can we talk about that single panel at 15:37?
Holy physique, Catwoman. The art on the musculature is incredible.
Also in that group photo shoot lol
And I gotta say this is my favorite costume design of hers
Grace Jones a view to a kill
It's rare for the female heroes/villains to get musculature that aligns with their male counterparts. Usually they're all just slightly toned, with inexplicably huge honkers.
@@PotatoPatatoVonSpudsworthYeah, I want my cat burgulars built like a gymnast.
Anyone notice how absolutely YOKED they drew Catwoman in this one? Over there off to the side in that group panel lookin big for no reason. haha

*for every reason ❤
I love when Batman is allowed to do his detective skills in these crime dramas. It's so flavorful and pulpy. It's exactly what he is meant to be.
All we can do is pose theories on how it was Alberto or the others.
I assumed that Alberto killed Carla and the coroner to keep them from revealing that he was still alive. Carla was investigating Alberto's death when she was killed, and then the coroner was killed the next month. We don't know for sure, but that's how I read it.
I love tim sale's art SO much,he was in my top 5 for sure. Rip king.
Me too. I love this and Dark Victory so much due to a large part of his artwork.
The only villain to truly outsmart Batman was the thug in the Animated Series that opened the door, saw him, closed the door, and told his fellow henchman that there was nothing in the room. And kept walking.
I've been hoping to hear Rob's take on this classic. This was a great way to start the day.
Calendar Man knew who it was since he said it was a woman.
Can I say a baby bottle nipple would not work as a silencer.
many people have.
It must’ve been a gotham baby bottle.
I love the fact we see the gradual manifestation of Two Face. Sounds like it was Alberto and the Dents. Harvey was saying he and Gilda as if they were one.
Batman stories benefit from this heavy contrast style of interpretive line art.
Batman can't catch SERIOUS Riddler.
"Riddle me this Edward. Though we meet but once, you know me forever thereafter. What am I?" -Batman in the ending of "Riddler: One Bad Day".
