Funny enough, even if he understood from the start and wanted nothing to do with the Joker, what is he gonna do for real, leave the Joker who wants him around? The moment the Joker took interest in him, death was unavoidable. You know as well as I do that even if he some how manage to run away changing everything from his and and look to the other side of the world, Joker WOULD find him one day and make It very messed up! And this Joker is messed up like Tommy from Goodfellas messed up.
For me the value of Azzarello's 'Joker' is not that this is the deadliest or most insane Joker - we've seen that with Emperor Joker, Morrison's bioweapons-terrorist Joker, etc. It's that he feels much more like a grounded gangland 'character'. We understand how he 'works' as a criminal and you can see why some people like Johnny and Croc find him charismatic and want to work with him even though he has a reputation for being unpredictably violent. It's Joker as Dillinger or Capone. As a note - when he gets Johnny to pass him the shovel near the start wrapped in the blanket, it's so the people following them think Joker has a shotgun.
I’ve always canonized this as Joker having a respect for Gotham’s supervillains specifically, especially the odd ones(as long as they don’t overstep on his terf)
My favorite scene in all Batman media is from Batman The Animated series. Batman's rogue's gallery is sitting around playing poker and talking about the times they almost killed Batman. Killer Croc (who we find out is secretly Batman) goes "One time I almost hit him with a rock!". The Joker goes "Oh, Croc....." and face palms.
Snyder's New52 Joker with the face-mask is from "Death of the Family"... "Death in the Family" is the story in which Joker kills Jason Todd with a bomb.
Jonny and Killer Croc both said “is that a problem?” when they were late to meet the joker. When Killer Croc was late, Joker didn’t care. When Jonny was late, Joker kicked him. It shows that Killer Croc was right when he said him and Jonny were different in Joker’s eyes.
When he says "you're so obvious" he's also talking to Johnny, it's obvious that he truly is not the Jokers friend, but his protegé. Johnny didn't get his bottom jaw blown off, he got shot on the corners of his mouth when Joker gave him his scars. (this may not be based in facts, but it's the ending I choose to interpret & no one can convince me otherwise)
I actually like the Joker characterization in this comic aside from the really grimdark shit that is almost too iffy and grounded for the Joker (I'm talking about what he does to Frost's wife), but that last scene where Batman goes 'to mock you' isn't great, not because the line is dumb---it actually is pretty cool. BUT. Batman would never tell Joker, known for his incredibly neurotic behavior, something that would undoubtedly piss him off while he's holding a guy at gunpoint, but he does anyway, and Joker shoots Johnny and Batman just... runs past him. Nice one hero.
It’s because if Batman had been watching him or got intel from Two-face that Johnny was Jokers henchman, Batman figured that he made his bed and now will lay in it. Batman didn’t kill him, but chose not to save him.
But yea.. you'd think Batman would've been watching the joker a bit closer and put a stop to his murders immediately. Im gonna try not to think too hard into it
Yeah, I feel that most cases I doubt Batman would get a dig in the Joker while he has a hostage, unless he had a plan to save that said hostage. Also kind of reflects poorly on this Batman for letting the Joker get as far as he did when it's been known he's been observing from the distance. Not saying he can witness every waking moment of the Joker's antics, but feels like he'd be priority number 1 after the bodies piled up.
It's an amazing line. This entire story showcases Joker as an unpredictable mad man. Someone that nobody crosses and has all the power over everyone. And in one line, it shows how Batman is the only one who can genuinely get in his head. It really is an amazing showcase of an unstoppable force meeting and immovable object.
While researching Jonny, I found out that this universe took place in the same as Batman: damned, also written by Brian Azzarello. Glad Rob mentioned it towards the end. Also, to add on to what he said, "Batman: Damned actually takes place after this story and reveals the body seen falling at the end of Joker is, in fact, the Clown Prince himself, not Jonny." Also, Joker threatens Two-Face with a briefcase holding evidence that Two-Face has two wives.
I like this comic because it's a much more "realistic" take on these characters and world. Besides Joker skinning Monty, there's no way he'd be able to do it that fast.

I feel like killercroc probably prefers the joker because he doesn't see him as some sort of monster probably doesn't even notice his green skin aside from some ball bustin. Also all eyes go to the joker when hes in the room.
Everyone knows Bob was Jokers number one guy
Really makes you question why Batman doesn’t take out an insane villain like Joker but is okay for all the people he kills, drives mad and mentally scars but Batman is like “noooo, he must live”.
You might as well make Joker..Batman’s dad. He just can’t get rid of him
Batman is complicit in all his crimes for not removing his arms eyes and tongue
Excellent storytelling
I was thinking that too
I think it was so cool how it really shows how scary Batman could be when from the point of view like an underworld person and how terrifying he can really be like in a movie where you don’t see the monster until the very end.
This looks like it could be adapted into a movie.
I mean you can try and he'll most likely go along with it for shits and giggles but chances are he'll get all the giggles while you get the shits
15:06 Because this time it’s a reversal of the character’s but not their behaviors, in relation to each other
Normally we’d be seeing things from Batman’s perspective and assuming Joker to be lurking somewhere plotting another unpredictable scheme
It is awesome
Turns out that Joker is more of a crimefighter than Batman.
first time veiwer! great content. love how u tell stories with direct text and commentary. good shit bro!
this is the goat joker story imo
Everybody knows that Joker's best friend is Batman. 💯
I really wish Johnny told Joker about Harvey immediately. He was stupid to not tell him.
“With the help of god or the devil”
Its the devil, it’s clearly the devil.
"You got a friend in me!" - some cowboy named Woody probably
This is honestly one of the best Joker stories if you ask me.
Joker really just kills tons of people and Batman just sticks him back in Arkham
Blame the government
This Joker storyline, if still alive, has Heath Ledger written all over it...Dark, twisted and in my opinion, well written.👏🏾
This was very well done dude
I remember bringing this book to elementary school in 5th grade and politely being told to never bring it again lmao at the time I genuinely didn't understand why
The skull on K Crocs soup is a hella nice touch (18:22 )
That's the way Croc should always be depicted. I hate when he's done like some kind of D&D monster
So happy I came across your page
Batman's "to mock you" line goes hard. Joker knows it isnot the reason but he knows it is the truth. Anytime you wonder about me it puts me above you, Batman knows that he sullies the Joker.
Everytime I see your vids I the think of him and I wasn't even a friend like that just a weirdo probably across the world who just really liked comics but God I miss him thank u for keeping the vids going manz
I used to like Brian Azzarello but noticed that rape and sexual assault is very prevalent in his works.
Yeah, it is just unnecessary. We already know the villains are bad guys. He also writes sexual assault in a way that almost ignores the victim and instead focuses more on the reactions of those around.
the artwork for this is jawdropping
The thing with Shelly was the worst thing the Joker did in the story, and idk if the story is good or better off without it.
One of the best comics I’ve read
I've waited years for this review lol I loved it when it came out
Not a fan of this broody, unfunny hissyfit Joker. Or this Batman, for the one page that he's shown handling a delicate hostage situation by dropping a sick burn.
Omg, I been waiting FOREVER for Rob to do this story. I'm so happy you finally decided to do these OG stories while it's a little hiatus or nothing new in comics is coming out, YET. I really dig these. I hope you do That Dark Horse The Mask story that takes place years after the other ones. It's so good to hear your renowned vigor for telling how these stories went down, Rob. I swear every time he gets excited I'm dying laughing. I also saw the vid of Benny passing, and it broke me to see how it affected you, and so many other people. You guys are LITERALLY the catalysts of the comic book nerdom community even waay before the MCU. Love bro, we NEED more of these. 😂😂🤣📠📠🔥🔥🔥🥳📠📠🖤🖤❤️❤️💯💯🙏🏾🙏🏾🥹😊
If Joker were released from Arkham, he'd go to prison. He wouldn't be turned out on the streets.
If a billionaire in a kevlar bat suit tried to take out half a dozen hardened criminals at the same time hand-to-hand, he'd get brutalized. He wouldn't be taking them off the streets. If you can't suspend your disbelief and enjoy the drama over fantastical plot elements, why read comic books? Anyway, this is Gotham; the Joker's off-camera henchmen probably bribed the judge or threatened their children or some such.
Rob, you should talk about the Plutonian from Irredeemable! Great video as always!
One of my favorite graphic novels. I remember when my pops bought it for me when I was younger too..
“He takes out his wifes husband” erm….you wanna try that sentence again buddy?
This was a great story, watched it while at work but wanted to come and engage again
