+meisblonde meee too!! I've just been so fascinated by the whole thing lately and it's interesting to see the commitment that some of these girls have to the hairstyle although I would never have the courage to do it it's very interesting to learn about.
My locks are now nearly 5 years old and finally long (near my bellybutton)! I keep them quite neat, so I have tried to find a method of washing that will disturb the roots as little as possible (thus require the least amount of upkeep and neatening). For those of you trying to do the same, I've found that using a plastic basin full of water and whatever type of cleansing agent you like (baking soda, shampoo, etc.) works much better for me than washing in the shower (less loose hairs and such). I fill it up, lay down on my back with pillows under my neck, get my dreads into the basin, and let them soak while I scrub my scalp with my fingers. Then I empty that out and get fresh water and rinse my dreads out. Then they are good to go, I just wrap them in a towel for a while then air dry for the next half a day haha :) and then I put a plastic bag over my hair while I take regular showers so they will stay safe and dry. I hope this is helpful for people having the same problems as me.
I've always completely disagreed with you on the topic of washing. I feel it is very necessary to wash locks at least once a week, and they can be washed daily as long as they are properly dried. My scalp gets very smelly if I got more than a week without washing it. It doesn't smell like a giant butt or a dirty armpit, but it smells very "human" and oily. Anyway, your locks look very nice and just because you choose to wash them less doesn't mean I need to wash my hair less! To each their own! :) I very much appreciate that you say that your way is one way and you are not going to tell people what to do! Thank you for being an openminded person!!
Don't I say in the video that I wash them around once a week? ;) No matter what, it's different from person to person, and people and it's important to remember that! :) It would be impossible to wash mine daily. Well if I had an extra hour to spend, I could, but that's tough with very mature dreads. Thank you for your nice message :)
Hah, that's what I meant! You do your way, and even though I disagree with your past way, it didn't ruin my life or anything and it made you happy, so it's fine!
Same on my silky straight hair. :O I had to wash a bit less frequently for a while because one of my front locks was getting so tight that it hurt! It was no good.
The scalp can adapt to different washing treatments. She is of the woods has had her dreadlocks for about 25+ years now, she washes them every 3 months with Castile soap, hot water and her own homemade oil.
To each his own, I have always stuck with a wash every week or two and it has never done me wrong. I love your dreads and I'm glad to see you let them evolve ;)
Dr. Bronner's once a week is what I do! I have freeform-about 2 years old. I didn't wash them at first until my scalp got itchy. People are always going to be skeptical about locs but they are gorgeous and those that have them understand that the benefits out way the judgements, you are gorgeous and locs are beautiful!
your locks look beautiful at the minute! I found my hair has started to smell NICER since I had dreadlocks, ive had mine for over a year now your my inspiration :)
awesome video, keep doing what you do, i like how you keep it real, its like a journal that you share with all of us... ive had dreads for years, then after awhile i cut them off.. i didnt feel right at all.. then as the years went by i went back into my family business of upholstery grew my dreads back an never looked back since.. its funny when certain people look at me an see that im the c.e.o their impressed.. i always told people my appearance is like art.. but skills are what speaks for me you know..? but yeah from here on end i wouldnt cut them.. for what, thats like saying to a octopus hey you gotta let go of your tentacles..lol it just doesnt work like that..lol if you get what im saying..lol but yeah i hope to see them long down to the center of my back again.. until then keep updating its awesome to meet you an live it to the fullest ;)
Regarding washing new dreads -- I think it really all depends on what you wash them with. I literally wouldn't recommend anything other than baking soda / apple cider vinegar, besan flour, or soapwort root. I had free-form dreads for two years, and every time I used actual soap in my hair it would either a) soften them up too much, or b) leave a bunch of itchy residue. Even soaps that were "formulated" for dreadlocks. So I just gave up on soap altogether, haha. My favorite was besan flour -- it's fairly cheap (in the US, at least), doesn't fade hair dye, and seemed to combat the "itchies" better than anything else I'd tried. :)
I can't believe I wasn't subscribed to you after all this time watching, oops. Subbed, finally. I couldn't watch this on my iPad, but I'm sure it's a great video and I'll have to watch it on a real computer later.
My dreads are now one month old and I wash them once a week and the get much steadier by every time I wash them :) I wash them with Dead Sea Shampoo and silicia which also helps to fix them a lot. I wouldn't use normal shampoo so far 'cause they're still very "young"^^

I really like your dreadlocks. I remember when you said that you don't wash yours. I wash mine every four or five days. I wash only the scalp, like you said in the video, and use shampoo without regenerator and other substances that would make them soft. I waited for two weeks before washing them for the first time. They didn't loose, but that might have something with them being crocheted every couple months. They've turned 3 in April.
love your locks! I wash my locks once in 1-2 months, usually when I re-dye my roots and I'm ok with that, they don't become smelly at all. but it takes them more than 12 hours or sometimes even more to completely dry without any heat, so I use blow drier with a low heat setting. and they're 5,5 years too
If I get any problems with it, yes.. Right now, it's just a question of wearing them down often enough, and it's mainly a problem when I go swimming and they soak up completely.. Don't want to ruin my neck, but it's not that bad yet :) I don't think they'll become much heavier, since they generally thin out when they get too heavy and thereby "regulate" themselves a bit :)
Anna April (Just cut out the loose ends to shorten the hair a bit, instead of the entire locks! ;) just saying, but it's a personal decision, of course, and as you so well said it yourself: it changes :))
i never heard of someone who washes his hair so rarely. in another video who have said that you dont wash them at all. i mean at the beginning ok you can wash them rarely, but when they are matured, i would wash them at least one time a week. i have dreads, but im doing also a lot of workout wash them three times a week. they look super, nothing happens to them.
I have a new dreadlock (only one, the rest of my hair is usual) and I had a few questions: 1) do you recommend crochet hooking your dreads? 2) do you have any tips for how i can wash the rest of my hair and avoid my dreadlock? and 3) whats the best way to do your roots? Thank you! :) you seem like a lovely person and I've found your videos very helpful!
Yeah! so many ways of taking care of dreadlocks. I wash them once a week ( when I can or HAVE the time to dry them). have you ever cut your dreadlocks ( length ) and did you bleached the tip? and are you still in washington?
Hey! Reaching out because I'm desperate! For months I've been looking for someone to help me w my dread maintenance and I can't find anyone!!! It's nothing but African Am stylist and they never call back or don't know how to do Caucasian. So.... Do u know anyone in Indiana that can help???
I'm curious if they would develop a smell for someone who runs nearly daily? I'd love dreads but I'm fearful my exercise habits would cause my scalp to smell sweaty with only washing them every 6 weeks or so in the beginning.
I don't know, and I think it's hard to tell. There's a huge difference in people's smell and how much they smell after working out etc.. I think it's probably something you just have to try and see how it goes. When I first got them, I used to go horse back riding often, and it wasn't a problem, but I guess it is different to everyone. You don't have to wait 6 weeks between washing, if that doesn't work for you, though :) Sorry I can't help you out any further, good luck!
well I know what you're saying when you talk about people "not liking" unwashed hair. I didn't wash mine for 3 months and people disliked it allot... Great video btw :)
hahah that's why i think dreadlocks are meant for chill people who can handle not fussing over them too much! haha it's a commitment, huh? that's why i probably won't get them...but they look so great on you and that's why i still watch dread videos LOL
Hi Anna April, I just recently started a two little dreadlocks. I backcombed the roots and used the twist and rip method on the rest. For the first day they stayed in fantastic, but then I washed my hair (I use baking soda) and the roots started untangling! Is there a way I can keep this from happening? I don't want to stop washing my hair! :/
I just got my dreads a few weeks ago, and they've been quite frizzy. Is there anyway to fix to somewhat tame the frizziness besides using a crochet hook?
I think my dreads really don't need that much care, that's why I wash them once every 3-4 months now:) I've had them for 2 years now, and they really got used to not being washed every day/week or so:)
Great video, my dreads are 3 months old and ID love it if they turned out like yours. Just a question about drying as it always takes a day for mine to dry even with a hairdryer - how did you dry them in Denmark? US is easier because it's warm!
Very cool video! When I started mine I didn't wash for like a month. It's important to just let them "set". Your dreadlocks are beautiful. Do you just rinse with water as a wash in the past? Great colour
OK! Thanks! Eheheheh ;) My locks are new (again), few months older only (I lost count again...! Maybe better that way? :)), but I always washed them from the beginning. I didn't do any real lock method to get them, I simply braided the entire hair (on single braids, of course). My hair's african. Due to that, and because I started washing my hair right away, naturally, as I felt needed and as I always did with the regular hair (before braided) some of them got loose, but that was all. Nothing got 'ruined', I simply braided the loose locks of hair again. People who say that (that their locks get ruined once they start washing them at early stages) for me, if you mind, are simply loosing the point of all this... Early locks aren't really locks; not yet... So nothing gets really ruined... Right now I already have real locks (that meaning that the braids turned into locks, you can't tell the braided pattern any longer), but still I consider them locks in formation, because I know they'll get much thicker through time (I do, I had long locks for five years in the past, too... :)). Right now they feel very soft, because I wash my hair with this gentle shampoo (baby shampoo), so they'll take a little bit longer to grow thick. Some of my hair is still in braids though, because hair forms differently according to the part of the head... All of this is... OK!... :) "People" don't get it: that's what locks are supposed to be all about: nature(al), patience, and let them grow naturally... Not about lots of gimmicks, wax, or forcing them to look like mature locks all in a sudden, nor perfect all together... By the way: you look absolutely gorgeous in this video, like, glowing :)
Hi, beautiful dreads! I'm in the process of dreading my hair (I have done it before but with half synthetic, doing it natural this time myself) and I was wondering, do you think if I just wash my hair in a bath of plain water and like lavender essential oil do you think it would loosen / ruin young dreads? Problem is I can't stand that feeling by my roots and back of my neck of unclean hair and I love my hair to smell of fruit or flowers... but I don't want to shampoo my hair every other day as I do currently with normal store bought shampoo and for all my new, young dreads to not tighten up over time etc...
i have a question. how much did it cost to get the dreadlocks put in to begin with? and how long did it take? when i was a teen i had natural dreadlocks and they didnt turn out so well haha.
I use a Canon EOS 550D with a 50mm f1.4. I just put it on top of some books on my desk, in front of a window. I live in a shared room right now, so it's not the easiest to work around ;) It's my roomies "department" behind me :)
I could listen to your accent all day. Sort of a cross between Bjork and posh Edinburgh. I wonder if you will be a film star one day? Once you get rid of the dreadlocks, haha.
did your hair change colour naturally at all when you got dreadlocks? i'm strawberry blonde and want them, but I'm scared my hair colour will change too much!x
Well, i got dreads to, for 4 years now, but if you smoke and work and go out in smokey situations, than your dreads will smell, and you need to wash them!! and yes dreads smell, but its not dirty or anything, its the smell of hair, and hair smells naturaly!! all animals smell,, and we are animals to!!!! but we are the only animals that using chemicals to smell nice :P
Your dreads are nice !! I was just wondering two questions is it true that dreads are like sponges when it comes to water & does it really take half an hour to ensure dreads are dry after a wash with a blow drier?
I dyed a couple of them purple in 2008 and they've been dip-dyed pink and purple in 2012/2013. I bleached the tips in April this year, but apart from that, no :)
Do you use shampoo or just water? I haven't used shampoo for 14weeks now and I've had dreadlocks for 3 weeks, will I have to use shampoo or can I continue to just use water? Thanks :)
Idk about that one, that sounds like mold/mildew waiting to happen.Even if you don't like actual shampoos try black soap(the natural soft ones you can break apart.)
I'm not sure why people wash their hair daily at all - the reason why people experience oily scalp is because they wash their hair everyday! Hair is meant to be washed once or twice a week or once every two weeks even. The scalp creates oil to compensate for all the oil stripped out of hair that is washed everyday. I have Afro hair, and I wash my hair once a week. Of course, I condition and do other things to it daily. I don't know anybody w/ Afro hair who washes their hair daily. People w/ other hair textures used to wash once a week (vintage videos on youtube show that). The 'no-poo' method is what people w/ Afro hair have perfected for years: regular shampoo has Sodium Laurate = soap lather in shampoo. That strips the hair. So we use conditioner or no-poo shampoo/cleaners to wash the hair. I don't think there is anything wrong with what you're doing. Take care.
Hej Anna! :)
You know, some days you just want to get rid of them. It comes and goes.. Last winter I was so tired of my dreads and was considering to part with them, but it has been months since I felt that way. It changes :)
I don't have dreads but this is like the 20th dread video I've watched today
+meisblonde meee too!! I've just been so fascinated by the whole thing lately and it's interesting to see the commitment that some of these girls have to the hairstyle although I would never have the courage to do it it's very interesting to learn about.

Pretty much, the sooner water hits it the sooner it'll lock(atleast for my/black hair).
Same on my silky straight hair. :O
I had to wash a bit less frequently for a while because one of my front locks was getting so tight that it hurt! It was no good.

Gosh you get prettier and prettier every video! Love your vids, you are so chill and kind.

Good tricks all over! Thank you for your input! :)
It's so interesting to see dreadlocks change over time, especially yours :)
You make me want my dreadlocks back! Very helpful video, thank you !
Please do a skin care routine your skin is flawless!
I really want to try dreadlocks even tho I am really young... I just think they look nice should I do it?
I can't believe I wasn't subscribed to you after all this time watching, oops. Subbed, finally. I couldn't watch this on my iPad, but I'm sure it's a great video and I'll have to watch it on a real computer later.

Yeah, it takes soooo long to dry them.. I like getting them blow dried, but I don't own one myself.. But it's nice! :) Thanks! :)
Do you think that as your dreadlocks grow longer that you might end up cutting them off because they're getting too heavy?
If I get any problems with it, yes.. Right now, it's just a question of wearing them down often enough, and it's mainly a problem when I go swimming and they soak up completely.. Don't want to ruin my neck, but it's not that bad yet :) I don't think they'll become much heavier, since they generally thin out when they get too heavy and thereby "regulate" themselves a bit :)

(Just cut out the loose ends to shorten the hair a bit, instead of the entire locks! ;) just saying, but it's a personal decision, of course, and as you so well said it yourself: it changes :))
Looks like the Washington weather is agreeing with you seems like you have a little tan. Your looking great.
Yeah, the weather has been great! We've had 70-90 degrees almost every day!
i never heard of someone who washes his hair so rarely. in another video who have said that you dont wash them at all. i mean at the beginning ok you can wash them rarely, but when they are matured, i would wash them at least one time a week. i have dreads, but im doing also a lot of workout wash them three times a week. they look super, nothing happens to them.

BlueHippieye Never cut them, bleached the tips last year and leaving Washington on Friday!
Hey! Reaching out because I'm desperate! For months I've been looking for someone to help me w my dread maintenance and I can't find anyone!!! It's nothing but African Am stylist and they never call back or don't know how to do Caucasian. So.... Do u know anyone in Indiana that can help???
I really love it that you do more videos!!
how do you keep your dreads from joining together? how often do you separate them?
How do you tighten your roots? and if you dont how do you stop them from growing together?
Thank you xx
I'm curious if they would develop a smell for someone who runs nearly daily? I'd love dreads but I'm fearful my exercise habits would cause my scalp to smell sweaty with only washing them every 6 weeks or so in the beginning.

Ohhhh~! Did you dip-dye them again? They look beautifully radiant!
Yup, bleached them a bit back in April. Actually was going to go pink again, but really like them just light.. :)
I love them like that! :D
you mentioned cutting your dreads open at the ends.. if you decide to do it again, could you film it, or explain it? thank you :D
I'm going to get dreads with extensions for the summer
well I know what you're saying when you talk about people "not liking" unwashed hair. I didn't wash mine for 3 months and people disliked it allot... Great video btw :)
How do you dry them so they don't get moldy?
hahah that's why i think dreadlocks are meant for chill people who can handle not fussing over them too much! haha it's a commitment, huh? that's why i probably won't get them...but they look so great on you and that's why i still watch dread videos LOL
If you ever decide to get rid of them I think you would look beautiful bald as well. You are simply gorgeous!
I've always wondered, how do you get your new growth to lock up? I just can't get mine to stay put.
Chandra Riddell It always just did without me doing anything.. Try rubberbands!
+Chandra Riddell Leave them alone, it will happen automatically with time.

Could you do a makeup tutorial on this look, you just look so glowy and fresh, love your face without piercings by the way xxxxxxx
I was told that Wax only works on Afrohair, but Im not sure
Would you please make a skincare video?
i was mine 2wise week and there 3 months but for me it locks them faster. but i have oily scalp

how much did it cost to get the dreadlocks put in to begin with? and how long did it take?
when i was a teen i had natural dreadlocks and they didnt turn out so well haha.
you shaved...curious..is it because of your current move to the usa?
Of course not. It's actually a really long time since I started to that again. December 2012, I think.
I really miss you Anna, I hope you'll make a new video soon
Hvad hed den Shampoo du brugte før da du boede I dk?:)
Love your videos! What is your filming set up like and what camera do you use?
I use a Canon EOS 550D with a 50mm f1.4. I just put it on top of some books on my desk, in front of a window. I live in a shared room right now, so it's not the easiest to work around ;) It's my roomies "department" behind me :)
Wow, thanks for the reply and the great information! :)
I could listen to your accent all day. Sort of a cross between Bjork and posh Edinburgh. I wonder if you will be a film star one day? Once you get rid of the dreadlocks, haha.
You are inspiring, my friend!
did your hair change colour naturally at all when you got dreadlocks? i'm strawberry blonde and want them, but I'm scared my hair colour will change too much!x
I Washed my dreads and dried them, but now they have smell than the rest of my hair... Idk what to do... I don't want to get them bad
Jacqueline Zambrano Go ahead wash them everyday. Use backingsoda cocont oil.Good luck honey.
Your dreads are nice !! I was just wondering two questions is it true that dreads are like sponges when it comes to water & does it really take half an hour to ensure dreads are dry after a wash with a blow drier?
Yes, they are like a sponge and no, it takes longer to blow dry them. It takes about 20 minutes for the roots only...
Anna where in denmark did you get your dreads done, i love your hair and i want to get my dreads done soon, please respond :)
Shanelle Izi They are homemade :)
You made them yourself!
That is amazing, i am extremely jealous
They are beautiful, good job hahah
It's so cool you're in Washington. Do you like the University?
I'm not a big fan of dreads, but your hair is really nice, those loose pieces you have add a little glam to it. lol
Do you dye your dreads?
I dyed a couple of them purple in 2008 and they've been dip-dyed pink and purple in 2012/2013. I bleached the tips in April this year, but apart from that, no :)
PLEASE make sure your RINSE your dreads PROPERLY. BIG mistake I made :(
Do you use shampoo or just water? I haven't used shampoo for 14weeks now and I've had dreadlocks for 3 weeks, will I have to use shampoo or can I continue to just use water? Thanks :)
Idk about that one, that sounds like mold/mildew waiting to happen.Even if you don't like actual shampoos try black soap(the natural soft ones you can break apart.)
Ever thought about coming manchester ?
Harold Stott Yup! Got a friend from there!
Take care.
Your dumb hott!!! Luv all you videos and just started my twist today. And now the journey!
People are so judgmental. Thank you for this vid.
Thank for thies video, its a inspiration for me.
How many dreadlocks do you have in this video?
I miss your videos 😢
Woah, you came to Australia ?
Yup I was there for five weeks in November/December
delight and beauty !!!
Hej Anna! :D
Oh my god you hair reminds me of a mermaid soooooooooo stunning 😍😍😍😍
I feel being hypnotized! I don't even have dreads. Sorry Heidi Klum her jaw line is sexier
Beautiful!
I wash my dreads once a week and I think that's often eough. :)
I don't have locks but curly hair and for 15 years I wash my hair once a month, maybe. Ha
Well I just HAVE to wash my dreadlocks twice a week, otherwise I'd become crazy ;D in summer i even used to wash them every single day :o
if i had these beutiful locks, i would never cut mines. but mine don't look that good on me :)
My dreads formed naturally because I used no conditioner and dr. Bronners shampoo

Why did you start shaving your armpits? I hope it wasn't because of mean comments 😩x

the story about bob marley supposedly having 11+ types of insects in his dreads is just a rumour.
wow your locs have really matured. kind of miss the piercings though :)
I really love ur dreads
Dine dreadlocks er dejlige og tykke, måske vil mine også se sådan ud en dag.
No poo doesn't mean not washing your hair, it means not using shampoo and only using conditioner :/
Shampoos with residue are not a no-no for dreadlocks because they loosen them, it's because it leaves nasty residue on your dreadlocks!
Mewesical Exactly
Have you thought about cutting your dreadlocks?
You know, some days you just want to get rid of them. It comes and goes.. Last winter I was so tired of my dreads and was considering to part with them, but it has been months since I felt that way. It changes :)
