    Dude, this happened to me jacking up my Bimmer from the rear diff. Didn't realize at the time, that of course, it being a RWD car, and the parking brake set at the rear, and the garage floor being made at a slight angle for drainage --- once the rear end got up high enough, the jack being on wheels, the front wheel just started to roll...

  • @toolcrazy88
    @toolcrazy88 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Hey Brian, this happened to me when using the Race Ramps as well. My setup is the 2 piece 56” long with the extenders and 2 piece 8” wheel cribs. The best way to do this is with someone sitting in the driver’s seat with their foot on the brake pedal combined with a good set of heavy duty rubber chocks. The rubber chocks don’t slide on the Race Ramps. But I’ve also done this with just the rubber chocks by myself. Also, the 2 piece wheel cribs make it so you don’t have to jack the rear all the way up to full height first. This is helpful if you can’t jack the vehicle from the center rear and instead jack from in front of the rear tire on the side. So only doing one side at a time. So you would jack the side and slide in one half of the wheel crib and set it down. Then go to the other side and jack to the the full height and slide in both pieces of the wheel cribs. Then go back to the other side to jack up and put on the other half of the wheel crib. It sounds like a lot of work, but once you get used to it, it can be done pretty fast.

    Looks like the same thing that happened to the guy who was using a floor jack with the 2 hockey pucks and it slipped off because the floor jack rollers got stuck. The floor jack rollers failed to roll inwards as the car went higher. You basically lifted the car up and pulled it towards you. The front wheels were free to roll and it rolled back down the ramp. Honestly, most of us probably didnt see that coming.

    I was about to do my own oil change. The plan was to use ramps up front and stands in the back and I decided I’d better search TH-cam to see if there were any ways it could go wrong. I was gonna jack from the side so maybe I’d have been okay but this video definitely made me reconsider having the fronts up high and the braked wheels in the air. Thanks for the video. • @jayr6865
      @jayr6865 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, exactly. Use the ramps to get the front up enough to fit a Jack under the front center, Jack car up so that the Jack is supporting it then put Jack stands underneath the two front Jack pads and move the ramps. Now that the front is up, go the rear and Jack the rear up from the center jacking point and put slide the rear jacks in. (All four jacks now are in). I assume he used the ramps up front because the Jack alone is too tall to slide under the front bumper.

    • @akellerseattle

      @@dylan-nguyen most low cars will have a lip that would get the front too low to slide a jack under. You'd have to take the bumper off

    When a floor jack is raised, either the jack WILL roll forward OR the car WILL roll back. This is physics and geometry. Look at how the jack works and remember this for your safety.

  • @jcinmi8598
    @jcinmi8598 ปีที่แล้ว

    I did this exact same thing with my Ford E-150 van, I had the front wheels on the ramps and I jacked up the rear of the van from the trailer hitch. As the jack got higher it pulled the front tires off the ramp and the van started rolling down my driveway. When as soon as this happened I tried to drop the jack but was not able to do it so I pulled the jack handle to the side to steer the jack toward the grass and once the hit the grass and sunk into the ground it stopped.
    I used this same jacking procedure a couple of times since that first incident but those times I used a piece of 2x4 with one end on the brake pedal and the other end against the front of the driver's seat then I moved the seat forward to apply the brake pedal and that worked good.
    Once I got the rear axle supported by jack stands (or another set of tire ramps) I removed the wood on the brake pedal. However I did I use the 2x4 again when I dropped the van down. The reason this worked is that with the front brakes being applied the jack does not pull the vehicle rearward as the jack gets higher. Instead as the jack gets higher the jack moves forward because the van can't move due the brakes being applied.
    Even though I used the above method a few more times I do it differently now. When I want to get my van up in the air to work on it I back the van onto the ramps and jack up the front of the van and put the jack stands, or a second set of ramps up there. I started doing it this way is because I can use the parking brake to hold the van in place instead of the 2x4 trick.
    I also have a Corvette that I have done a similar method. On that car I jack up the front end and put it on jack stand I then lift the rear of the car with a floor jack making sure the caster can roll forward and once I get the car up in the air I use my ramps under the rear tires facing rearward which keeps the ramps out of my way especially when working on the exhaust system.

    After looking at this more, I’m not sure wheel chock on the race ramps would work. I’m not sure they will bite into the ramp and plus the chock would be on that inclined section.
    Currently I use their trax Jax ramps to get my low cars up 3 inches. Then use Harbor freight low profile long reach to get the center Jack point. And then lastly use their wheel cribs 10 inches (2 pieces). However, I do only put 5 inch wheel crib to the front , then rear, then add the other 5 inch to the front again, and then 5 inches to the rear. That way the car isn’t at such a scary incline while jacking up the car. It’s a hastle going front to back , to put wheel cribs this way. But I feel safer doing in incrementally.
    Wheel cribs have a rounded surface to cradle the wheel, so no chance for the wheel to role on an incline.

    dude you're NOT dumb.
    this is actually a VERY common mistake that happens to many ppl; they just dont have the balls to admit it.
    what i do with my 12" race ramps is, take 2 jacks and lift up each side of the FRONT of the car.
    get both FRONT wheels high enough to place any traditional ramps under, but place them BACKWARDS so the lips are on the BACK sides of the front wheels.. now your RWD car wont roll back!
    lift up the rear as you did from the diff and put the 12" race ramps under the rear tires.
    now with the front already up on the old ramps, take 2 thick pieces of wood for extra height on each jack on either side and raise the front side by side evenly until you can place each 12" race ramp under the front wheels.
    VOILA!

    hey bro, don't worry man, we all make dump mistakes.
    Mistake I made was using those jack rubber pads, stacking them to gain more height and it ended up slipping when the car was being lowered. Not making that mistake again. Using a Long REACH jack now, and also no more using rubber jack pads at least on the front/rear jack points. Only using them for the pinch welds.

    Glad you are ok and the car wasnt severely damaged and just the floor jack taking most of the damage. What size wheel cribs did you use?
