As a die-hard Honda fan and a member of the Gran Turismo generation that grew up idolizing all the Japanese sports cars that we couldn’t have here in the US... man, I really don’t like the Type R.
It’s a Civic but it’s absolutely massive. It’s a Civic but it’s terribly expensive. It’s a Civic but it’s so obnoxiously styled and loud. I feel like this car is trying to overcompensate for what it is. The original Type R’s were performance kings but they weren’t so in-your-face about it.
I’m not saying it’s a bad car; it really is amazing. It’s fast, *really* fast. No torque steer in a FWD car? Comfortable and user-friendly enough to daily? That’s last bit is certainly not something any other Type R Honda really was, save for maybe the DC5 Integra.
But it just doesn’t “seem” like a Civic Type R to me. It feels like a kitted out Honda with the biggest bodykit stuck to it; the kind of Honda you could build after unlocking all the upgrades in a Need for Speed game. It doesn’t act the part of “factory sleeper”, or failing that, a “factory club car for the street”. It’s just feels a Civic that’s bigger than it should be, wearing an even bigger skirt.
The way modern car design, trends and safety standards are headed now may mean we never get another raw, tight, and classy factory club racer like the original EK9 and DC2 Type R’s, but regardless, I don’t feel like this was a step in the right direction for introducing a new incarnation of the Type R nameplate.

This is the reality of the automotive industry. Regular Civics are regular cars, they're appliances. Many Civics are bought by young people, and the Civic was designed to captivate these young people, I'm sure you know all this, but I feel like you need a reminder. Honda can't design a new platform just for the go-fast version of the Civic, and they can't make it subtle because they know people won't buy it.

In Florida, we've had Police Athletic League license plates for at least fifteen years. Worth every penny of the twenty bucks a year that the plate costs. They're not fucking vents. They're just design panels. And they couldn't just radically redesign everything, it's still a Civic. Those plastic pieces in the bumpers are in all current Civic hatchbacks.

Or when you recognize the risk posed to expensive bodywork by shitty freeze-thaw-cycle-ruined roads and the gravel they create. I put long flaps on my MX-5 so that I could play on gravel/dirt roads and not annihilate my (original) rear bumper. The stickers tell the REAL story of any showboat car.

Needs a larger hood scoop to prevent overheating. Take a cue from Subaru.
Subaru likes to plop the intercooler right on top of the motor, so the massive hood scoops they use are to keep the car from grenading themselves.
Also, they’re prone to massive amounts of heat sink.

DrewLSsix as someone who owns a WRX @Wiggy is correct. There is a top mounted inter cooler that the hood scoop feeds into on the hood. Plus heat extraction holes on a hood don’t force air into the engine bay, they vent air out of the engine bay.
@@DrewLSsix No to what? WRX Imprezas do have the large hood scoop due to having a top mounted intercooler. Same goes for the Mazdaspeed3.

Finally! A Type R review where the reviewer doesn't gush over it's lack of torque steer for a million years!!
My 1995 Saturn SW2 didn't have torque steer. It's really not that hard, but it takes a bit of time and effort, something that most cars seem to lack today.
Zzyzx Wolfe I too had a Saturn S-Series. I would never in a million years say that my 2,300 pound 4cyl with 125hp when new could have ever been the victim of torque steer.
thedog556 I had a Saab 9-3 Aero for a couple years and that thing had the worst torque steer when you got on it. Yes I made the mistake of having the FWD version instead of the AeroX with AWD.

All of those cars are going to be far less reliable.
@2 WIENER cars in 2019 are not inherently reliable. Not all cars are going to give you hundreds of thousands of miles. Honda and Toyota make the most reliable cars. Some cars are even less reliable now than in the past since there is more technology packed I to them that can fail.

Rice stands for Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements. Ricers are all looks with no performance, which doesn't apply to this Civic Type R. Fastest FWD car around the Nurburgring, beating all of it's competition which are FWD and RWD, including some cars that are above it's price.

@@Justin-qe3tj I would definitely advise against a used euro VS the Honda (father in law is a mechanic and I've owned a few nightmares). Full disclosure I recently bought a new full size pickup because I want to haul stuff like a camper, boat, etc. Those typically cost more than the Civic Type R. I'll get the itch again in the future. Maybe I'll pick up a slightly used one as a weekend car. Always have to weigh the toy options!

Zecrid Nah. The most that will happen with the RDU on the Focus when it overheats is that it will shut off, precisely to prevent damaging itself. And I’d rather have it shut off than grenading.
Also the RS has been having insane problems with gaskets and engine block cooling design (leading to waterlocking in some cases). At least the Type R is manageable.
Spacemaster Sexlord Indeed, there is a problem with the head gasket design, but he mentioned the RDU. In both cases, it’s a minority of cars that are having problems, but both cars are going to be owned by enthusiasts, so they’re going to be way more vocal about the shortcomings/failures.
Zecrid technically Ford will blow it's head gasket because coolant leaks into the cylinders at cold start
rubberwoody “Technically” the headgasket failing is the first step in the process, followed by coolant leaking into the cylinders. Then you either have rough start, or in the worst case, cracked blocks or chucked rods.

An RCR and a Type R to keep me warm in this frigid weather
Honda should make a more conservative looking version and let you decide how crazy you want your styling online. Or just offer two body versions. Shouldn’t be too much to ask for a few different plastic bits.
I mean, at it's base it's still a 2017 Civic chassis right? No reason you can't share most of the panels if you want to.

Then why would you even buy the Type R if you're going to convert it back to a boring-ass regular Civic? Without the performance doo-dads, it's just an expensive, overstyled car.
rambow70 Although that's a good idea on paper, it would still require them to make adjustments to their assembly line to sell another version of a type of car that just isn't very hot right now. Sports car and small cars are both plummeting in sales, so I don't imagine investing more into such a product would make for a strong business case.
rambow70 Not to mention certain things can't be changed much. That engine as he stated, generates alot of heat and already has alot of overheating issues, so it wouldn't be a good idea to tone down the bumper and hood with smaller intakes, because that would only make the issue worse. I would imagine that the spoiler, although on a fwd car, does help to a degree, in fact I believe Honda stated it generates a few hundred pounds of downforce at high speed. Perhaps they could adjust a few things, the roof vortex generators, the odd exhaust layout, and maybe reshape the rear wing and vents slightly, but there's not much else they can do unfortunately.
I love it, simply because it's so polarizing. It's not necessarily the prettiest and I really wish those vents were functional (or gone), but you have to appreciate simply because people have such strong opinions about it.

I drove one of these before getting my Accord. I just couldn't do it. There was way too much of a premium they were tagging these cars at, and it made it not worth it in my book. It's a hot car, for sure, and I'd rather have this over the Focus, Golf R, and the STi. They're all a little ugly in their own ways, but these cars are designed to look a little silly.

Also, spraying wax on a car and then grinding around dirt with an old microfiber towel is a sure way to have a million swirls in no time... there's no safe way to wipe dirt from a car, just wash it or let it stay dirty until you can wash it properly.

Rinseless washes are completely safe when done properly. But I agree, spraying a detail spray and wiping isn't ideal for anything but some dust.

Civic turns 45 this year. And it looks like it is having a mid life crisis. I'm sure it is great and all, but I can't help looking at it and thinking that it is like that uncle that desperately wants to be cool but just ends up looking douschy. Gimme a 94 itr or an eg hatch with a b16 any day. I don't care how much slower it is. It just feels right. (And I'm not a Honda fanboy either, I'm currently wearing a Subaru hat, it's just that some Honda's do make me nostalgic for the days of playing initial d in the arcade and having impromptu car meetups in the asian grocery store parking lots).
