    I remember some videogames journalist 15 years ago complaining about the emerging trend of games with locked content. They used the analogy of a car with additional fees to unlock basic functionality to illustrate how absurd it was. Looks like we've come full circle.

      No shit? I have 12 years old BMW 530td it has 400k km of mileage and it looks and drives like a charm. 2 minor failures occurred: suspension got wiggly on bad roads and because I was still driving not fixing I screw-up a set of expensive tires. Rear doors had cables broken in easy to fix the place. And Drive got crazy a few years ago. Needed reloading part of the drivers. Toyota and BMW are right now the most reliable cars in their countries of origin,

Toyota and BMW aren’t the only ones that have their vehicles made there, plenty of other car companies have them make vehicles too. The A90/A91 Supra is not Japanese but it’s not German either. I remember hearing for the longest time that Toyota didn't want to do a new Supra. That the 2002 model was to be the last. Period. Like GM and the Corvette, they just wanted to be done with it. And after almost 2 decades of pestering, people finally got a new one. Only Toyota's heart wasn't in it. They got BMW to do the work, then half-heartedly dressed it up in their image. Honestly, if this is to be the Supras of the future, it was better off staying in the past.

      Neither the RCF, nor the LC500 are Supra sized sports coupes.
      Honestly, they're closer to being sedans, and the reason they got produced, was because much of their structure came from sedans (the RCF can trace its lineage to the IS, and LC500 comes from the Lexus LS). The reason they got made, was because they didn't need to make a completely new, coupe chassis for them.
      As for the Yaris GR. That's a hatchback.
      So which is it?
      Do you want a 100% Toyota made Supra, that's based on a hatchback, or a lardy sedan?

    If anything, this video makes me appreciate the new Zupra more. Also, the 1st-3rd gen Supras aren’t some huge legacy shoes to fill. Only the 4th gen was the pinnacle of jdm 90’s GT cars and took power so well it got it’s reputation. Plus the styling and that huge wing.
    Using the Supra name isn’t disrespecting the 4th gen. This car is even faster.
    As for BMW’s involvement - why should Toyota dump huge amounts of R&D cash into a little sports car that will have very low production units, and not even be s halo car? The joint venture made sense, and gave us a 5th gen Supra we’ve ALL been begging for since the 4th gen went away, so many years ago. Thank you Toyota, for making a real sports car again - heck, TWO real sports cars when you include the 86! Another great car and another collab with another auto maker. What will irritate everyone even more (aside from a paywall for features) is that Toyota partnered with BMW in an attempt to make the Mk5 profitable on its own vs the BRAAAAAAND carrying the cost over to other models. Compared to the new Nissan Z car, where Nissan did go it alone and admitted the new Z car will likely not be profitable and will need to rely on others model sales to shoulder the cost. It was most likely mainly a balance sheet move to partner with BMW.

    • @Bones43x
      @Bones43x 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nissan is also carrying a lot of parts over from the 370z to cut costs. Toyota didn't really have another car to do that with. People would have criticized them if they had re-styled/recycled the RCF or nearly anything else...too big, too heavy, the Supra didn't have a V6 or V8, etc. A lot of the purists just need to admit that nothing would have pleased them. In order to build the car that would, in theory, please them, it would be $100k+, and they would complain about the price. Most people that are complaining about BMW reliability couldn't afford a new Supra or BMW. They're most likely potential 2nd or 3rd owners, because most people that buy $50k sports cars (or any new care for that matter) either don't keep them outside of warranty or they don't drive them enough for them to have real reliability issues.

    I’ve been in the opposite boat for a while now. I never really understood the hype for the A80 Supra, and this car is way prettier in person than anyone seems to give credit. It’s faster, it’s cheaper than the A80 was, it does everything the old Supra did but better (with the exception, maybe, of being so damn tunable. We’ll see)
    I am by no means a Toyota fanboy, but I also don’t see how this car fails to live up to the actual, physical car sold in the 90’s. Nothing will live up to the hype, but this car lives up to actual car just fine

    • @Tunerguy21
      @Tunerguy21 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. And I feel like this does a much better job of sticking to the original formula than the R35 did. The A90 is about as close as you can get to a new (modernized) A80 while still being its own car, but I think that's the thing. People didn't want it to be its own car. They wanted Toyota to remake the A80, and that was obviously never gonna happen. I don't think the FT-1 helped either, even though Toyota made sure to go out of their way in saying "This is not the new Supra".

    From what I remember hearing 5 years ago when it was announced of the “new Supra” was that Toyota had made a partnership with BMW due to Toyota having better quality on their welds with the frames compared to BMW.

    • @nickadams2451
      @nickadams2451 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This wasn’t known on BMWs part until the 18 to 25 year old drift community started buying secondhand three and five series BMWs and welding the differentials. But it’s pretty phenomenal that even a $20-$25,000 Toyota Corolla has better welds on the frame than a $40,000 plus BMW!

    • @adamwarpinski8838
      @adamwarpinski8838 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, but it’s different. Ford built the mustang, Ford built the Mach E. If you want to step on your heritage with your own work, that’s fine. Stepping on your heritage with a different company’s work, a company that isn’t related to you and is arguably diametrically opposed to what your company does, that’s not just stepping on your heritage. That’s literally just inciting a negative reaction.
      Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate what BMW was able to achieve, but honestly if toyota had an enthusiast following they’d have every right to be pissed off.

      @@adamwarpinski8838 at least the new Supra kept the same basic idea as the old Supra’s, same engine configuration, same layout, a driver focused interior, and the aesthetics are at least somewhat similar. The Mach e could have just as easily been called explorer e or escape e. It is only called the mustang mach-e because Ford wants people to associate with one of if not their most iconic car.
