Looks like I'm the only one that enjoys it. Viet Nam was a part of the French world at one point--many of them studied architecture at French university and spoke French fluently, among the wealthy. As Viet Nam is getting more wealthy now, don't they have a right to make the buildings the way they want to? What's wrong with the Vietnamese accessing French design motiffs, given it was a part of their history? By this same mentality that people have in the comments here, should I go to the ancient buildings of Viet Nam, which had a lot of Chinese elements and say no, this is no good?

Normally I would agree. However, a lot of Vietnamese study architecture in France. By learning from one of the leaders of the world, I would argue, Viet Nam makes buildings more beautiful than even a place like Japan, where the architecture is bleakly utilitarian and drab.

We rode our bicycles along the coast (mostly) from Hanoi to the border with Cambodia in the south. Sadly, along the coast you see a LOT of similar developments that have been abandoned mid-project, although none at this scale. Hopefully the location near Hanoi will ensure that they are occupied and will thrive. I appreciate the electric vehicles and supportive infrastructure. But like many others here, this development seems sad and weird, and probably will until the streets are populated with residents living there at a Vietnam-level of busyness and energy. There are a lot of people in Vietnam, let's hope that these aspirational projects can house a lot more folks, with a sustainable and affordable level of prosperity.

Was being ruled by the French for 6 long decades not enough that you have to worship Western culture and build a replica of Paris?
Stop bringing Chinatown and Korea town
into it, because they are not the same as an artificial housing/city project.
Maybe look into the history of French war crimes in Indochina and see how the French were the first to use napalm in Vietnam well before the US invasion.
Maybe ask the older generation about it.
I had a Vietnamese colleague who was born in Hanoi, she curses her country and says she wishes the French were still in power. This is a colonial slave mindset and it happens when people see themselves as inferior subservients.

Anyways, Vietnamese socialism is from Soviet Union, not China. Even today in 2024, much of the leadership in Hanoi studied in Moscow. Maoism is what the Cambodians had, literally no one wants it.
