To me, his backhand is gonna continue to hold him back even if he gets everything else right (ditto Casper Ruud). Alcaraz absolutely obliterated Tsitsipas' backhand at the French Open, legitimately made him look helpless.

Yep, usually people Focus on a player strenght points to assume ifnthey would be top players, but thats the mistake, like novak said any player in The top 200 han hit a good serve or forehand, everyone has one bignstrenght, but the difference its on their weakness, when they can sort there weakest link and Made it strong thats a great sign, like Wawrinka didnwith his fh, he always Will have his amazing bh, it's his natural show, just like berretini serve + forehand combo, but it was when Stan managed to hit constant good forehands (specially on important points) it's when he became top 5 material, not before, so as You Say Tsitsipas measure of his potential it's on his weakest link, the backhand, thats why Eubanks will not be the next Big thing no matter how exciting people find his tennis, he looks great on the offensive butntos defense it's awfuo compared, he always will have serious opening on his Game the moment he goes to defense

The problem isn't the fact that he has a one handed backhand, the problem is the way he plays it. The most of the times he hits that backhand having his weight on his left leg, contrary to what the players with the best one handed backhands do, and it is not possible to play that way with nowadays rithym. And even when he has his bodyweight on the right leg he doesn't explode foreward but he goes back away from the impact with his body. That's why he shanks so much on that side, why he doesn't hit that hard and doesn't find many winners with that backhand. If you watch Wawrinka, Gasquet, Roger and also Musetti they always hit the backhand really transfering their weight on that right leg and exploding foreward.

Stefanos is a solid player, but his game is not advancing as others keep moving up and he (Stefanos) is not working to change things. He isn't trying to set up his forehand and is wasting time ignoring his backhand which is too one dimensional. His net play has improved, but he seems to have zero plan 2. He hardly ever slices and is foolishly stubborn.

It seems both Tsitsipas and Zverev are uncoachable.
They're very successful because of their natural talent and their strengths but they've not really improved as a player for the last 2-3 years.
Tsitsipas legit looked better in 2019 than he does now.
Zverev played at a high level until his injury but he's still mentally weak and hasn't figured out the second serve. Still plays passive a lot of times when he has all the tools to be a power player. The tour has moved on and these two have only gotten worse since 2021.

Zverev showed great resilience in his match against Sinner at the US Open. He weathered a storm, and persevered through extreme heat and an incredibly taxing opening set. You said he was playing at a high level until his injury, and that was mid 2022. He's really just got back, and already showing a ton of promise. Pretty unsubstantiated to write him and his potential off

He has been a top talent since 2017 and still hasn't made the leap into winning Slams. He hasn't really improved as a player for the last few years.
Don't get me wrong, a healthy Zverev will always be top 5 level talent but I'm not sure he has much time left for winning Slams.

Completely disagree with your take on Zverev. If you follow his game closely and not just see the highlights/results, he is actually more complete compared to himself 2-3 years ago. Technique-wise, his forehand is much better now and he is also willing to improve his volley when his baseline movement declines due to his injury. Even though he is not yet at his pre-injury level, his improvement rate is high and it's just a matter of time until he becomes a big threat again.
Tsitsipas on the other hand, yeah, I can't see any major improvement in his game.

  • @kieranrankie203
    @kieranrankie203 ปีที่แล้ว +143

A few things to note after watching:
    1. Totally agree that a big factor in Tsitsipas dropping off is due to Alcaraz destroying him on his favourite surface. It must really kill the confidence knowing his opponent is simply levels above him.
    2. I disagree that Tsitsipas was the best player on hard courts behind the big 3 and Medvedev 1-2 years ago. I'd definitely put Zverev above him, especially 2 years ago. Tsitsipas has a terrible record at the US Open and he's never won a Masters on hard either. His only big title on hard court is the ATP Finals. He's basically just good in Australia and sometimes Cincinnati.
    3. Don't think Tsitsipas's decline related to losing ambition from "many years of success". He hasn't even won a slam. If he has lost ambition, it's because he's realised that other players have caught up and he's no longer in the elite tier group of players. He's simply not in the equation in any slam contender discussions. We all know he had very high expectations of himself a while back with all that "I'll dethrone the Big 3" talk.

i saw tsitsipas win his first big match live in toronto against djokovic. looking back, i was shocked to see such an aggressive and versatile young player with a one handed backhand. i truly believed during the 2021 season that he had developed enough and would go on to win a slam, but his past two seasons have been duds ~after the clay season. in my eyes, there are clear reasons for his decline--awful slice, terrible return, backhand that gets outclassed by nearly anyone, and poor mentality. everyone in the current top 10 has a solid backhand other than stef and tiafoe; most have the best backhands in the world. that being said, he's had a fine career: two masters, two slam finals, atp finals champ, and competitive h2hs against most of the next gen.
he can remain around the lower portion of the top 10 and maybe have a few deep runs here and there. if he improves drastically he will be competitive for a slam, but otherwise this is where he will remain. blaming badosa for this is ridiculous (many other top players are dating and he has had these problems even before her). you can't attribute his downfall to her without also citing her for the positives. if he wants to devote his time to her, that's fine. he can still play tennis and improve if he wants to.

I think Patrick Mouratoglou is at the root of a lot of his problems. There was an interview with Patrick here on youtube where he said he didn't like to teach players variety in case they "lost" their A Game. It was just astonishing nonsense and explains a lot of why Stef can't hit a consistent slice backhand. Patrick M's philosophy also seems to have limited Stef's tennis inteligence. Before Stef was beaten in straight sets by Medvedev at the Australian Open a few years, he said in his press conference that he "just needed to play his game better". Mats Wilander was commentating for Eurosport and he was absolutely scathing. He said that any intelligent player knows that sometimes playing "your own game" is the worst possible thing you can do. You sometimes have to play to your opponent's weaknesses rather than your own strengths. Wilander said that Medvedev loved Stef's usual game which is why he almost always won. And that's exactly what happened. Stef didn't seem to have any idea or any ability to change his strategy.

Yep. A part of the mindset thing is that he has a lot going for him outside of tennis. There have been cases across all sports where athletes reach nearly the top of the game in their early 20's then struggle/aren't driven to go to the necessary mental space to evolve as their game gets figured out by other top players. What drove him in his teens and early 20's is not a good enough motivator anymore because he seemingly doesn't need those things to feel great about himself anymore. I think the next year or so will be more of the same, but he turns a corner at 27 when achievement becomes a personal necessity again.

He got to a ten player with less effort than others, due to athletic ability and the dedication of family. His biggest problem has been always patience and concentration during games and training, which do not improve over time. He is now seen as the ATP's clown and lollipop. He has unfounded self-confidence and ignores the advice of others. When his growth as a player did not go as planned, he impulsively started a relationship with a woman similar character ahead of the slam, and the entire process was a matter of his bad choice and careless personality. Dozens of more promising players were forgotten like that.
Djokovic sacrificed everything for tennis, including himself and his family, to be the best player; The physical, technical, and mental training of today's ATP players dedicate higher intensity and much more time unimaginable to players 20 years ago. As players comparable to Alcaraz continue to be produced every season, it is difficult to expect better performance for a player in his mid-20s.

I enjoy watching him play, I think his backhand and second serve is a problem for a high ranked player. I also noticed his ability to convert on break points is a problem also. This problem is something every player has in their game. I also noticed that Walmart is carrying his tennis racquets, which is very cool. Great job on the video my friend.

the funny thing is that when you watch his 2019-2021 matches mostly hes backhand seems to be much better than today. Look at AO 2019 AtP Finals 2019 Clay season 2021 the backhand could even be a match winning shot. But since his FO final 2021 loss i never watched Tsitsipas at his absolut best, which is strange. In my opinion the backhand now is at half of the quality where it was in 2019. Plus I think hes second biggest problem is that he hasnt got a decent slice which makes his backhand even more attackable. Look at Federer: whenever he didnt feel his backhand yet in a match he could totally rely on his slice which was arguably the best one in history. I tell you: Tsitsipas with a decent slice would have got to no. 1 as well as he'd have one or even more Grand Slam titles.

I actually think he has done exceptionally well given some of the issues you've raised. For me, there are some technical faults which put excess pressure on his elbow and shoulder and that alone will limit his longevity. He has already hit the brick wall with those issues and frankly, I don't think he is prepared to take the risk of making those changes. Fair enough. It's a risk. So, he's just going to make the best of what he has.

Good analysis. In my opinion the main problem here is education and principles. He is an extremely talented tennis player but even those players need to fight over and over every single point no matter who is in front. It seems he is not able to be at the required level mentally quite often lately part because of the arrival of next generation talent guys and part because of education: need to start working from scratch working on principles like humbleness, sacrifice, respect....

From a technical standpoint, the backhand and return of serve are the clear problems.
Beyond that, he has had a couple of false dawns where you think he has reached a level just behind the very top players, I felt he was there after the Australian Open, but it wasn't to be. He hasn't got a top ten win all year, I think a good win will be something to get him going again, though he is far away from beating Alcaraz or Djokovic right now. Essentially he needs to reset everything at this point.

Don't know much about tennis, I just watch it. From the numerous comments written by people who obviously know much more than me about tennis and numerous weaknesses mentioned, I came to a conclusion that there is an overarching cause behind all that. I think he and his team combined simply do not have the required level of analytic capacity to identify what his weaknesses are.
Not only this shot & that shot should be improved, which is true, but the strategy. I don't see him having enough talent to come up with various strategies in his matches and adapt to whatever the opponent came up with on any given day. For example, and correct me if I'm wrong, Carlos looks a bit better technically and physically than Djokovic, hits harder, runs and accelerates faster etc. Yet, Djokovic still comes up with strategy which poses a serious challenge to what seems to be technically and physically a better player. Thus, I belive Tsitsipas's problem lies in his ability to analyze his and his opponents' game and in his lack of talent in developing strategies of game. Good coach could help with that.
As far as technic is concerned, I never played tennis, but I fanatically practised playing guitar. If you practice a lot while using appropriate methods of practicing you can learn to play anything, provided you started early enough in your life and that you have some talent. Well, he started early with tennis and he has enough talent (referring here to fine motor skills and coordination). Analysis and strategy.

IMO his backhand has deteriorated a lot compared to what it used to be. There used to be more penetration and pace through the court but now there seems to be just topspin, which gives a lot of bounce on the ball but good players can attack it very easily. It just seems like to me that compared to other great one handed backhands his arm is just to close to his body leading to less rotation and having to rely on his wrist action more, rather than pace through body rotation like stan or roger. He has to change this, otherwise the backhand will never be a winning, reliable shot. He has to pull a roger 2017 edition and give it more pace through the court.

Coco pulled off having the daddy coach because the top women aren't as competitive as the top men. If Djokovic, Alcaraz and Medvedev didn't exist, Tsitsipas would have great chances to win many big titles even despite his mediocre bh and subpar daddy coach, because he is hella talented. But, those 3 are much much better than Swiatek or Sabalenka, and guys like Sinner, Rune or Hurkacz are much stronger and more regular than girls like Jabeur, Pegula or Rybakina.
Tsitsipas has to understand he really NEEDS a coach that can help him take his bh to the next level, otherwise he will always have a ceiling in terms of competitiveness. He needs to stop being brainwashed by his daddy, and sack him. Look at Zverev, he didn't want to work with Ferrero and kept working with daddy, then Ferrero goes to Alcaraz and makes him a star. The daddy coach syndrome needs to stop, not everybody is like the Williams' sisters.

IF he were to win a Grand Slam title, it would realistically be either the Australian Open or U.S. Open. A LOT of things would have to go right: he would have to play his best tennis, a lot of seeded players in his quarter of the draw would have to lose early while he wins, he has to be in a good to excellent mental state, and he would have to improve his backhand to the level of Stan Wawrinka. But I see him as one of those players in the category of "best players to have never won a Grand Slam title."

One handed backhand players do not have an easy life. You have to have a killer forehand, move extremely well and take a lot of balls with the forehand from the backhand side and have a deadly backhand slice (like Federer), or have a backhand from another planet like Stan the Man. If not, the one handed backhand is often inferior compared to the two handed backhand.
