    When I was studying at uni a few years back I managed to get three punctures within two weeks in my brand new rear tyre thanks to all the constant construction near my department. Didn't have the money to replace the tyre at the time, so I plugged them all with a kit similar to this. Managed to get nearly 8,000 km out of it before a fourth puncture, after which I replaced the tyre. That being said I was rarely riding the bike over 80 km/h since I was just using it to get around town etc. But they are certainly a great option since these rope plugs take quite a bit of force to dislodge, FortNine did a good test to show just how durable they are.

    Hi mate.. ive fitted a total 6 of these at the roadside over the last 15 years...and all but one of them were in Other Peoples bikes.!!! far too few people make any provision at all for punctures, or even road side assistance at all..! Good kit, and whether you ride it till the tyre wears out, or buy a new tyre the next day... it'll be the best tenner you'll ever spend when you're stood in the rain, at the side of the M69 on a Friday night on a promise..!

      Brand new rear tire picked up a nail Honda CBR600 FX. Reamed the hole put in a string no problem for 2 years, still using it now. I think it very much depends on the area affected, the quality and attention of the repair as to the risk involved, plus the fact it is on the rear reduces my concern. I rode cautiously at first but over time I have resumed normal riding and now have no worries about my repair. I always carry out pre ride tire check and pay extra attention to my repaired area. I know you have to be careful what you advise but I think in some cases its more of a cost vs peace of mind thing. I have also plugged my front car tire with a string kit also (another nail picked up) been running that one for 3+ years and it is almost out of tread now. I took my time with the repairs, skipped no steps and made sure there was no air loss over time.
      The only thing I would suggest is to have a much more deflated tyre when pushing the string in and inflate to full pressure immediately after removing the insertion tool that way the pressure inside the tyre will mushroom the internal part of string more as it pressurises providing a much stronger repair.

    Thanks for posting your version of this repair.Having had "fun" repairing a puncture with one of these kits in a Metzler Roadtec01, they are a good idea for an emergency repair, but I decided to see how long it would last as some claim that they will last the length of the tyre! The repair was ok initially but then slowly began to leak air, so I eventually replaced the tyre. Having watched numerous videos about this kind of repair, some people don't put cement on the tyre string or reamer, although it seems to be a good idea to do so. Some instructions say you should twist the second tool as you pull it out, in order to form a bobble like plug behind the repair. I guess it may be an idea to practice on an old tyre! Also for small punctures, thorns, thin nails etc the bicycle type reamer kit with a smaller diameter reamer, and a SHARP blade included would be much easier to carry. The cutting off part is supposedly important as an excess of the string protruding tends to push the plug back through the hole. In my experience they work well on car tyres probably due to the more rigid nature of the contact surface of the tyre.

    Well done, yes maybe use something sharp next time... ;-), driven thousend of miles on ptched up tyre, never a problem, king of puncture here, but here something that my tyre guy said, the stick sticky thing you found everywhere, be red or black will eventually leak, but you will get a lot of life on the tyre before that, my tyre guy use a vert similar stick but is individually wrapped and doesn't look like a chewed candy, unfortunately i can not find where to by, i have a couple (yes he gifted them to me..) and thet will last longer. For my puncture addiction i have a portable compressor (when i go long distance) and a hand operated pump (always with me), both will go up about 2.5 bar, but that's better than a flat! (plus the plug and the spray thing...) yes, i'm a bit paranoid... Last thing, the glue once opened will solidify pretty quicly (even in the tube) so i bought a hanfull of smaller individual tube, just in case..

    You can have a road side air compressor hahah, I have a 12v air compressor that I can plug into the bike. I have used three of these plugs, only once on my bike. Twice on friends bikes. I used mine to get to a garage and have a full patch put in as it happens coming home from work, saw the screw as I got off the bike. Plugged it and drove over the next day to get fully patched. My mate did the same but first finished out 1 week moto trip first no issues. The other mate drove on it for another 7 months daily till he replaced the tyre normally he had no issues during that time. I believe he had it on a track day just before he changed the tyre... Personal I wouldn't dare do that for the cost of a full patch but given he had no issues for so long I admit I will not be in as much of a hurry to get it sorted next time I use one, it be done once but I not going to panic about it if you get my meaning.

    I used one once on a near new rear tyre, on my Pan European. It lasted the life of the tyre, didn't get to test it on the Autobahn though. IIRC I used 3 CO2 cylinders to fill up. Its in the back of the bike now, cylinders replaced, with a pair of gloves and a sharp Stanley blade... I noticed it in the morning and didn't even miss the first meeting. All in all I was maybe 15 minutes late incl the fuming and swearing before commencing work on the repair.

  • @mikewynne6549
    @mikewynne6549 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've actually used these repair kits both cord which you used and plug type. The co2 canisters are crap and expensive. If you have a top box a single cylinder foot pump which I carry are great or an electric pump. When I was in France I did over 2000 miles and never had a problem. There are many bits of advice using the cord type, but the one I use is before you give it a sharp pull out give half a turn. Also I've never put vulcanised rubber on the rasp, which you used first. This is only to clear out the hole and should be only used on the cord insert. I've used these to get me out of crap and work well if done correctly. When you've been stuck in the middle of nowhere and waited 6 hours to be picked up and taken home it's a god send. I never leave home with out one. But my advice is the get an old car tyre on practice a few. I've still go mine and it has cord and plug types and 3 years on that tyre still hold pressure eventhough it's starting to look like a pin cushion lol.

      Ahhhh, so the RAC will cover bike punctures? That's good to know as my renewal is coming up. There is also an 'add on' you can get on your RAC cover where they will pay for a new tyre, although the small print allows them plenty wriggle room, but it may still be worth it.

    It's amazing how a nail or screw will be lying flat on the road, yet manages to turn 90° and penetrate a tyre passing over it. I have a plug in 2 of my car tyres, and because I tootle around town, touching 60 at a max, I've left them in over the winter with no loss of pressure.
    However, my bike tyre would be a sickener, especially - as has been said - it invariably happens to pretty new tyres, and as I'm sure we all agree the integrity of a bike tyre is absolutely crucial for safety, and I'd have to get a new one for peace of mind.
    That said, I'm not even sure where I stand with my RAC cover for a potential bike puncture? There is a 'add on' for tyre replacement I notice in my renewal, although the small print seems to leave them with plenty room to wriggle out of paying if the tyre is not the correct pressure, and other legalese. Still, if it's not excessive I may cough up the additional cost.

    • @RoadcraftNottingham
      @RoadcraftNottingham  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My theory is the front tyre hits it, making it stand up ready for the rear tyre.

  • @hedgehog3900
    @hedgehog3900 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've used these plugs for years,sadly, and would agree 100% with James Biggar. If it's convenient with a young tyre i would take it for an interior repair at a tyre place but i have no concerns using these plugs for the life of the tyre if it's reasonably central. The kits i use include gas cylinders for roadside stuff.
    Let us know how the interior repair goes after using the plug, i probably wrongly assumed it would not be possible once the plug is in place.

    What are your views on motorcycle visibility (I wear a white lid, lighter coloured jacket) ? I'm testing my next bike on Monday... A Versys 650....but it's grey.. So I'm a bit concerned. But if I buy, I will put a brighter tank cover and probably some high viz flashing on the front. Oh, it already has spot lights, which will help.
    I was also looking at these new Royal Enfield interceptors, they look brilliant, but have such a tiny front profile, it raises my concerns.

    I do it on car and bike tyres. I understand why people might think this is temporary, but i've done it many times and haven't had one fail. I know the reality is different, but why is it accepted that this is temporary, but repairing a tube is fix and forget? Because the patch is pressed against the tyre inner side I suppose, but still- I have tubes with 5 patches on, but using one of these strings on a tubeless tyre is considered the unsafe option? Most of the time I don't use the volcaniser, esspecially when it gets too hard/weird/empty. But still works fine without! I have a handpump. This will get me to a petrol station after repairing a tube, or indeed tubeless bike.
