I’m 65 years old and I remember learning this in high school. Now looking back it’s incredible that anyone could even make any of this out, it looks like hieroglyphics! Such a shame that shorthand is barely used anymore, I think it’s fascinating!
I’m in my early 30s and was fascinated by this when my 63 year old colleague showed me this! I had never seen short hand before and my first impression was yes, hieroglyphics! I think it’s fascinating!
Just like king, I’m a teenager too! I’m learning this so I can take notes faster, since I’m the type to write out as much as possible before getting down to the main points, which currently means I’m missing out on some stuff because I’m busy writing.
Memory is the key to speed. Don't confuse your mind with too many systems and additional outlines from other sources. It is less taxing on memory if you base your own script upon existing tee-line orthography that sits already within your memory. No one should criticize you for introducing your own shorter forms this way. Proficient shorthanders do it with all shorthand systems when they have confidently mastered the basics.
as you continue writing it will become a second language ot you, just like how hard it was for you to read english when u were younger. Teeline is the same. It's like a secret code which very few ppl know.
As a 'Pitmans New Era Baby' I can see why people want to learn this...(if I knew how much work was involved in Pitmans, I would'nt have thought twice! Yet looking back, clocking 297 WPM in Pitmans...I can see where grammalogues and Phonographs help...A LOT
It’s all about context. If you wrote ‘he typed in his cd at the cash machine’ it could only mean ‘code’. It would make no sense to use ‘cod’. I’ve been teaching myself Teeline for the past 9 months and I’m at 70wpm. It’s a great system to learn.
I'm new to Teeline and I realized that it's a writing system that consists of an abjad(no vowel) and an "abjad-syllabary"(alpha-syllabary is the system Korean uses, Hangul. But it has vowels, Teeline doesn't) where a syllable is compressed into one symbol.
Agreed. My mind is spread out on different scripts and its affecting my reading speed. I've always struggled with reading scripts as fast as writing. Thanks. :)))
I remember seeing a shorthand book when they were used prominently in the 60's my mother had one! I didn't take any notice! The real secretaries used short hand! And if I am correct! Had to do so many words a minute!!?
omgg its beautiful! and it uses the joining i already do in my conlang! i should shorten the words like its done here too, for some words. It looks almost better tho!
I love teeline, but I don't think its wise to remove the ending vowel letter of CODE, making it CD. Ascertaining discrepancies between CD for code or CD for a CD would be confusing. Reading out of context is at times difficult.
It could easily mean cod, could, cad, etc if no indication of the vowel sound is given. An e would show that it was a long vowel: code, rather than cod.
I tried Teeline for a few months but gave it up when it started to get illogical and you had to learn all these short forms that contradicted the principles on which the system is based. Teeline has a lot of good points, but Forkner is a more logical alpha type shorthand, in my view.
Okies. :))) Just out of curiosity; have you made your own note taking writing script? I've made few before but they always end up inefficient in notetaking. My most recent is my most efficient so far, as I've derived it from Arabic and Mongolian scripts. But they're rather taxing on memory.
upon looking at a word list of the teeline gold heinemann. it definitely looks completely different to what she has written. it will be interesting to take a look at the book quoted in the info section.
can i ask for clarification. I have seen several books saying Teeline, Teeline Fast, Teeline Gold which i have seen the above link. What is the difference between them all please. Thanks
5:25 pm I took shorthand in school, my senior year. 😳 homework every night and couldn’t miss school or you’d be behind. My teacher said that it’s not likely to get an A. To get an A you’d have to dictate 90 w.p.m. There’s not enough time in the school year to achieve that goal. By gosh don’t tell me that I can’t. I did it! Thanks
I expected words like 'school' to be written phonetically, as "skool" so you'd use the teeline forms for skl. Many eons ago I learned Pitman shorthand, which is entirely phonetic and very complex. I never did develop any speed with it because it was so complicated.
Teeline as aimed at modern journalists and note takers, who just need something practical that's quick and easy to learn given that they are already intimately familiar with English spelling but almost always completely unaware of phonetics. You should give Gregg a try, you'll definitely have better luck with it than Pitman nowadays, what with fountain pens not being the norm anymore!
I think it is fair to say Tee-line gives you the basis for your own orthography additions. If you can read it back accurately it is considered correct. Tee-line say shorthand is just a means to an end. Mr Hill did not claim to invent Tee-line, he said he discovered it. He took from Gregg's and Pittman, most of tee-line, and then tweaked it
WTF? Mind blown....only know calligraphy back in elementary. Wish they taught this back then... 🙄🤔😥🔥💩 it translate to: eye roll cause confused and bout to cry but its lite as shyte.......
this kind of reminds me of English characters morphing into some sort of Chinese/asian character system. Like it's becoming more efficient, it's evolving
SuperfluityFrenchMoribundMurdoch Normal Hebrew doesn’t have vowels, unless there’s something unfamiliar like a name. You get used to it...and very good at crosswords 😂

I do work sometimes for an old editor, shes 95, I see notes she has lying around on tables all the time, and it honestly does look like hieroglyphs.
Never heard of this until now…wish schools taught it. It’s interesting.
dont worry! i am a teenager and i eanted to learn this for school so i could take notes fast. it not dying out yet!

i saw a kid in my class writing short hand the other day. or so i thought. turns out he was dyslexic
🤣🤣🤣
I watched video after video and still couldn’t grasp it, this video made me completely get it. What a wonderful teacher.

No it’s so simple
I can’t imagine shorthand being easy to read. I’d take notes and then have to decipher what I wrote 😅
When I learn Pitman (very complicated) years ago, reading it was the easiest part. Writing it was really difficult, there were so many rules.
@@muskndusk turns out it’s the other way round for teeline

Sue you are a good teacher.
I'm dyslexic but have always been fascinated with shorthand. This is an amazing resource and very accessible to new learners.
This makes it so much easier to understand!!
These. are amazingly helpful. Thank you.

I never learned this and just saw this from a tiktok and if u know it then taking notes or writing essays would be so ez omg my hand would thank me
If you're removing silent sounds and vowels, how do you differentiate the words code, cod, cad, could, cud? Wouldn't all of these be reduced to cd?
I’m assuming context?
@@thelastpeacelord1584 Yes, I think context would be the only way to tell.
You can keep the vowel

Yeah that was my same thought. My grand mother is still writing just like this.
Arabic, Persian, Urdu are all abjad languages

My mum too. That stuff looked like hieroglyphics
Sue is awesome!
Could "school" be written as "s", "k" and "l" thus going down the phonetic route?
Teeline is not designed with this usage in mind, but as long as you can read back your own notes, anything's game.
Want to watch more of her lessons. ❤

The good thing is that in a practical setting, you will have context 90% of the time
I never knew this existed until my grandma told me
Caps for abreviation, I like to put a caps indicator below the outline.

This is so funny for some reason, never heard of this before
cant believe i wanted to learn this
How would you tell the difference between most and must without context?

How ever knew I can learn it here😁😁😁😁
so hard , could you tell me if any other way of shorthand?
now to see how strengths is written ;)

I remember learning shorthand and thinking how I will never understand it. Now shorthand is all I use that that I can’t even write in full anymore
How to differentiate wall and will?
how would you differentiate between say full scale and fly school?
context?
I have no idea what is going on but my brain is slowly starting to understand.
the simplification is so logical o.O
My 90yr old mother still writes in Pitman shorthand when she has to.
Holy crap I am confused 😂 but it's very intriguing to learn.
i have many senior family members and they've never mentioned this
Would mast, mist, most, and must all look identical in teeline?

can i have the book - how to writ 240 wpm in pitman shorthand
1:31 how do I know if it is meeting or mating???
if we want to skil then how
So how would you differentiate between 'Code' and 'Cod'?
From sentence
How can you tell apart cod and code?
You wouldn’t understand
Is shorthand still used?
A dying art it should be taught again it’s like a secret code
Just learned short hand is an actual thing, and not many people know it, gonna learn it for myself, it looks like an encrypted message lol
A lot better than just a book. This can be learnt pretty quickly, use-able (but still pretty shitty) within a few days.
Where is the Differenz in Meeting and mateing according to this concept ?
But what if I want to write cod or scale?
Use a k

Is that what doctors use?
i believe so, but there are different kind of shorthand writings.
ive only just heard about this. somehow people learned this in school?

Why couldn't code be misinterpreted as cod, if just c and d remain, when reading the shorthand back? Or is it based on context?

Why did schools stop teaching this

So it's an abjad?

Is this how doctors used to write scripts
Pitman is easier as well as more prominent
Jokes on everyone. This lady made up everything on the spot!
Gregg shorthand is much simpler and more concise. This system would drive me crazy!
Taking out letters is ridiculous Teeline is fast enough without taking out the letters. "Code" "Code" Cod" "Cody' Coda" Cola

Out of context- this looks insane.
