Well, i've been trying for years to remember how the lyrics used to be and how this songs used to be. All that i had in memory was that bass line. The whole memory about this song came from a tape during the period (94-99) when my parents used to listen to it. The years have passed and that little piece of my childhood remembers me of that song. I always remembered it used to sound so gloomy and sad but unhapilly i "ve always been unable to remember exactly which song it was. Then, when my wife were going to watch Death Note that song came and i got really crazy about it. I thought i'd never find that song again. But here it is, gloomy and sad, juts like my childhood and that 90's tapes stored in a shoe box.
I'm a Kiwi and on my first trip to Sydney from NZ. I caught the Manly ferry, something I'd always wanted to do since growing up listening to Ozzy crawl
I was too young to appreciate this song when it was released, but it stayed with me over the years like all good music does. What a masterful piece of work from a great Aussie band. Thanks was always intrigued by the lyrics and could never catch them all. (Although i think it's Russian "sub" not "sun", beneath the arctic as quoted in the lyrics here; makes more sense when you think about it, but thanks all the same.)
I agree with ‘sub’ 🥰. and for today’s climate, we could easily interchange the words guns with tongues; there are definitely some reckless tongues out there!
The lead singer said that there's no hidden meaning to this song, that 'it's about aloneness and taking guns out of the hands of losers', he also mentioned that he wrote it very quickly and always meant to go back and make the lyrics fit better. Personally, I'm glad he didn't because it's one of my favourite songs of theirs.
back in the days when Australia was still Australia..... Beautiful song! I love it. "Russian sub beneath the Arctic ..." back in the days when Australia was still Australia.....
This song reminds me when i was in my young adult years. I would sit and daydream away listening to this, and even now, it does that to me. Great song! even if it makes me emotional.
It's hard to pin down what makes this such a great song. James can't sing too well and the lyrics are stupid in my view. But its got hook that doesn't leave you alone, and it really suited the Puberty Blues promo. I say it should be re-released internationally to go with the show. BTW Brenna Harding is absolutely cool. Just my opinion.
yeah, i quite like the lyrics. but what most gets me about this song is his vulnerability. he presents himself as a broken, flawed human being. that is very generous and trusting of him.
I’m Australian. You clearly are not. Art is subjective. This rings so true for me. Don’t try and explain emotional things like music with rational thought. The two don’t mix at all.
It's 2019 and my 15yr was blasting this in the car, I fell in love with this song, and said to him they need to play this for all this young kids, that's out here doing all these shootings, and he said yeah mom I was thinking the same thing.
I think it was written about the "Dog day afternoon" when professional Bank robber Hakki Atahan Took the ferry to Sydney to Rob a couple of Banks and ended up taking hostages On a car ride to where he was eventually shot dead
It’s 2022 and this song is still a ✨masterpiece✨
