I have heard this song numerous times in my life, but I never knew who was the singer and I never really focused on the lyrics. Today while driving to Brisbane, this song was playing again on the radio and I was suddenly overwhelmed by emotions. It is such a beautiful track and I am truly proud of Australia. I am not an Aussie myself, but I have lived here for over a year and a half. During that time, I have made Brisbane my home, wandered around the quiet Outback, travelled the east and the west as well as leaped from Circular Quay to Manly. My time here will be up soon, but I will never forget this place and this wonderful piece of music will be among the many things that created these indelible memories.
Not only is this one of the best Australian songs ever written, the instrumentals that come in the recording are unforgettable. The bashing drum reminds me of the ferry punching waves across the harbour, and the crying guitars carry so much emotion. Just a beautiful piece.
There's an acoustic version which is really lovely but for me that almost shocking snare really makes the song. The nostalgia is palpable with this tune.

I owned a car radio shop at this time. I'd fitted 4 power amps and a huge array of Pioneer speakers in my Sandman. I remember doing 160kph with a crowd onboard as we motored to Willunga surfing. All the windows were down and I had a very loud dual exhaust on the V8 but all you could hear was music.. and no S Elaine it doesn't get better

no herb shops over here though mate. It's turning in to an increasingly more heartless and selfish shithole. Don't let a little 80s nostalgia song fool you.
Don't be distracted by the fact this is an 80s tune. It reflects true beauty and is timeless.. but yet.. a reminder of an old Australia, a patriotic, proud one, unlike today.
Hang on, gave away what to who? Australia was stolen from the aborigines only 230 years ago. White Australia has such a short history, you guys are all morons.
This track is awesome opening with just vocals, bass and drums. How did I miss this in the 80s. I came across this song just watching the movie Death Note. Just hauntingly beautiful. Beautiful voice
Best thing about Aussie rock being underrated is when you are overseas, you can drop a tonne of amazing songs like this Westie living in Colombia, I get free drinks at the local bar everytime I show them a new song like this
Great song, that I've heard the 1st time tonight. I grew up in South Africa and loved Aussie culture from afar because it was so like SA in the 80's and the music grabbed at me. This is like a timestamp into another world, that still lives inside me.
I feel like more attention needs to be paid to Australian music, and not just music, but Australian art in general. By art I don't just mean painting alone but also film, literature, music, performing arts, dancing... we produce some of the most idiosyncratic, original and unique perspectives of life. These perspectives are shaped by our unique country, our intrinsic connection to the land and our Indigenous population. International audiences should take notice, we can produce art as good as Europe and North America, we just need the funds to support our endeavours. Not to mention we need to start supporting our artists and filmmakers, instead of simply paying attention solely to the work that comes out of America. Buy a ticket to an Australian film as often as possible. If you feel creative, put your mind to it. This kind of eerie, spine-tingling music by Australian Crawl is just some of the meaningful brilliance we, as a country, can produce.
I agree with your sentiment to a degree. Here in Canada we play second fiddle to the US in those same artistic endeavours. There is a brilliant wealth of music, art and film talent to be discovered in every country, not just the USA. Not sure why every measuring stick of success is gauged by American recognition...
@@robertplante8858 I think it's because they're so pushy, egotistical, loud mouthed, overbearing and in your face. They see that as the key to success ... apart from Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and a handful of others from the earlier years I'm not a fan of American music. But I do love your Canadian singer-songwriters, like Gordon Lightfoot, Chantal Kreviazuk, Bryan Adams, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell ... they're up there with the best.
I saw a beautiful black holden panelvan on Botany Rd playing this song with great gusto in 90s. Its a beautiful song, both beast and song in my memories forever..

Love this song, so many memories especially of my brother who passed away in 1988.

Music is a time machine. It takes us back and memories flood in. This song especially.
Ted Owen n
I am in Australia at this moment on vacation from the U.S. Music doesn't get any better than this!!!!!!
holidays.
+Edwin Henry Blachford you shouldn't have been so reckless
+Edwin Henry Blachford you shouldn't have been so reckless
Edwin Henry Blachford Omg i am so jealous. The sandman is my dream car.
Bloody Legends mate wow how I miss the 80's and all the best music.
I imagine this song being played on a cassette player inside my road cruiser while sunset driving in the Outback... this thought alone brings tears to my eyes :')
Rafe Archer Perhaps a Monaro LS or LTD :)
777Jerry Statesman here...
I even wonder if that song inspired Prince while writing 'Purple Rain' :)
Still playing it on Bluetooth camped up in the Kimberly on my own at the dead of night I can feel the spirits dancing all around me lol
The first song I heard as a kid in the early 80s...and recognised he was actually singing about my city. Special memory.
Manly born too
Timeless Aussie song... Thanks from across the ditch 👍🇳🇿
Thanks for Tim Finn and Split Enz and Crowded House this is a little know classic from Mental Notes

I remember this song driving to my Nan's funeral when I was 14. . My brother and I had a cassette deck in the back of dad's car playing all the greatest hits tape for that year. 1985
Heard this for the first time yesterday in BBC Radio 6 music show. What a gem ,not sure how I've never come across this song before.
a total Oz classic - total Sydney
I have to admit, I never really rated Australian Crawl, but in the last few years I realise how wrong I was....an extraordinary band that changed Aus music forever...love them so much.
This is the best song to listen to after coming back from the Herb Shop in Nevada ! We went out in the desert and played this outside over and over again ! Thanks again Australia you rule ! Wish I could trade you places
no herb shops over here though mate.
It's turning in to an increasingly more heartless and selfish shithole. Don't let a little 80s nostalgia song fool you.
thanks mate
David Stubbs plenty of room in Oz a beautiful place to live. I saw them live in 83 and again in the mid 80’S another 3 times fantastic band
We'll take ya mate. Just don;t touch the Koalas!
Algum br aqui escutando essa maravilha ?🙋♂️
One of the best songs ever written, timeless and an Aussie classic💗
É nois queroz
Vim pelo death note
Eu aqui querido 🙋♀️☺️💛
Ouvi no rádio e lembrei de procurar...
Ouço desde sempre e vou ouvir até o dia que a morte levar-me para seu repouso eterno
A classic song which brings back a lot of memories
Being Born in the 80’s, I was born too late to appreciate 80’s music when it came out.
Great song. Very haunting for me now as the one I love is no longer amongst us. Lord I miss her so much. I guess somethings never change.
chin up mate.
Sorry
My condoleances. I wish you the best.
I hope your doing well Dennis mate.
God loves you Dennis ✝️🙏
Don't be distracted by the fact this is an 80s tune. It reflects true beauty and is timeless.. but yet.. a reminder of an old Australia, a patriotic, proud one, unlike today.
too right mate
Still a few true patriots about I was only a kid in the 80's but I'm about as nationalist as ya get
Hang on, gave away what to who? Australia was stolen from the aborigines only 230 years ago. White Australia has such a short history, you guys are all morons.
patriotism - violent white supremacists
Too bloody true
Drinking Grant's Whiskey at 8yrs old....smoking a bowl at 1 in the morning..great older brothers I had 😁 The best!!! Love NZ and Oz🇳🇿🇭🇲
I lived in Sydney in 1995 and took the Manly Ferry to The Circular Quay every day. I have been back to Sydney 9 times since. My Spiritual Home ...

This track is awesome opening with just vocals, bass and drums. How did I miss this in the 80s. I came across this song just watching the movie Death Note. Just hauntingly beautiful. Beautiful voice
Best thing about Aussie rock being underrated is when you are overseas, you can drop a tonne of amazing songs like this
Westie living in Colombia, I get free drinks at the local bar everytime I show them a new song like this
A true Oz classic great music, from a kiwi fan
Sorry, I have not much of the band background, who was the Kiwi? Thanks :)
James Reyne was born in Nigeria and moved to Australia in the 60's. Not sure where the Kiwi comes into it.
Reimer Freitag
Hi what i should have said is from a kiwi fan, love this song..
Hi Phil what i should have said is,from a kiwi fan, love this song..
falconia1 You shouldn't have had to say that at all, that made perfect sense
Great song, that I've heard the 1st time tonight. I grew up in South Africa and loved Aussie culture from afar because it was so like SA in the 80's and the music grabbed at me. This is like a timestamp into another world, that still lives inside me.
Absolutely brilliant, you don't realise just how good this song is
I feel like more attention needs to be paid to Australian music, and not just music, but Australian art in general.
The solo is a true masterpiece, very difficult to get it just right.
One of Australia's best bands ever!
I saw a beautiful black holden panelvan on Botany Rd playing this song with great gusto in 90s. Its a beautiful song, both beast and song in my memories forever..
In my top 20 greatest songs. The emotion it produces every time I hear it is incredible.
Grew up with this song in OZ - it made such an impact on me that as adult singer/songwriter I had to put my version of it on my second studio album.
IT IS STILL SO BLOODY POWERFUL IN 2021!!
James Reyne roxxxxx!! 😘😘🤘🤘
Aussie music def underrated. Growing up in New Zealand we were big into Ausi Crawl, Jimmy Barnes, Inxs, Men at Work and many more. It has been such a big part of life... you forget to stop and listen to the lyrics.. Reminds me of who I am :) Now with this Covid 19 and lockdown with the Anzac music on the telly, seeing all these band age.. Makes you realise you have too.
History repeats itself, this song is just as fitting today as I'm sure it was back then.
What's this song about?
The staccato cello gives the extra punch. Gives a unique stamp.
Remember sitting on the tailgate at the drive ins when this was played during breaks! Aussie GOLD.
this song reminds me of my late father. rip Dad
+Cameron Benner Mine, too. R.I.P they all.
This song is sooooo Australian, brooding and moody.
My mother left my farther and moved to a shitty flat in Toowoomba 1984...I was 5..she used to come to the house and try and steel us kids...Dad would take us and hide us in the house.... she had a untreated mental disorder...I`m haunted by her pain....when I used to stay at this flat alone this song would come on this little radio by a old dirty fridge....I can still smell the place....still to this day I can`t see or hear this song through any other vain....some times I think the feelings are bigger than me.....
Jesus Christ...A river of hate...what the hell happened to you?..were do you get off talking to someone like that?..oh one thing more..if you and I were face to face and you spoke to me like that...I would set you straight..no two ways about it....
never read something I hope Is so honest, mad respectz bro
even if it was a lie, that aint the right response.
what if he was the 1 in a million, and your fucked up comment sent him over the edge. fuck you.
sly in an out like u do you fucking sly fox
One good thing that came out in the mad ,80s
You're bleeding out at night in an alleyway after a mugging gone wrong. You hear this song being blasted a block away. You look up in the sky, you think you can see stars. Thoughts of your family and friends pass through your mind. The faint outline of the stars are what you hold in your mind, waiting, waiting.
My Australian husband introduced this song for me and I love it!
my very favorite Australian song for its simplicity and execution
A true Oz classic great music, from a kiwi fan
this song reminds me of my late father. rip Dad
INXS, Divynils, Icehouse, Kylie... long live Australia!
Will never get old this song
This is the only style of music that makes me feel Australian.
1980s Aussie Rock only does it.

Lyrics
Meet me down by the jetty landing
Where the the pontoons bump and sway
I see the others reading, standing
As the Manly Ferry cuts its way to Circular Quay
Hear the Captain blow his whistle
So long she's been away
I miss our early morning wrestle
Not a very Happy way to start the day
She don't like
That kind of behaviour
She don't like
That kind of behaviour
So, throw down your guns
Don't be so reckless
Throw down your guns
Don't be so
Feel like Scott of the Antarctic
Base camp too far away
A Russian sun beneath the Arctic
Burke and Wills and camels
Initials in the tree
She don't like
That kind of behaviour
She don't like
That kind of behaviour
So, throw down your guns
Don't be so reckless
Throw down your guns
Don't be so
