Love this song even though it talks about aboriginal people. I myself a native American from the Zuni tribe in new mexico relate to this song. We all are the same no matter what continent we reside. Peace Love and much happiness to you all...

I was in a country near South Africa when this song came out. I visited Jo'Burg many times, and saw the changes that came with the end of Apartheid. This song, besides being a great song and well produced, has a lot of meaning to me. It's a great example of an agit-pop song. Love it!
@@TuskerAfrica I haven't been there since 1996. My experience was between 1989 and 1996. My wife was born in Peru, and her skin is fairly dark. When we first came to RSA, we had to stay in a hostel for Christian missionaries, because the hotels would not take both of us in the same hotel. That changed, in fact, we brought our Malawian assistant with us on a trip and got him a separate room next to ours, no problem, after the rules changed. And of course, during Apartheid, the constitution of RSA held racial segregation as law. There was no possibility of a black president. After that, Nelson Mandela became president. Now, I know that is not reflective of every citizen's experience in South Africa. I would be open to hearing what ordinary people, especially black people have to say about their experience during Apartheid compared to now. What the outside world views as sweeping political changes are not that sweeping for everyone who lives in the country.
so let me get this straight, you want the australian people to either leave and go to god knows where, or pay a bunch of primitive dossers for sitting on their arse for thousands years? if you did give it back wtf are a couple of primitives going to do with a billion square miles of land, your either on some heavy shit or going to the wrong college son.

The picture is "The Mittens" in Monument Valley, in very southern Utah near the Arizona stateline...which, for the purpose of the song, the land is now Native land ...
Midnight Oil were a band that came out of Sydney in the mid 70's and paid their dues working the pubs and clubs up and down the country until they had a massive hit with Power and the Passion'. Don't know if it was a hit in the US but was in Australia New Zealand and Europe. I still regard it as one of the best songs of the 80's from anywhere, and in that decade I listened to a lot of music. They had a number of other big hits too including 'US Forces'. They certainly were not a 'one hit wonder'.
For me it is so symbolic of the loss of a 30 marriage. She took with her 30 years of shared memories. And she left me with 30 years of shared memories 💔 how can I dance when the world is turning?
You are dead wrong."Beds Are Burning" is a political song about giving native Australian lands back to the Pintupi, who were among the very last people to come in from the desert. The band even played a show wearing black with the word SORRY printed on their clothes.
Get with the times. Guess the song was about that when it was about that at the time. Now you can listen to the song and there is a different meaning to it and it maintains the songs stability as well as its integrity. Music memes different things to different people at different times. I'm glad you got the meaning of the song 30 years ago. But times have changed. The time has come to say fair's fair to pay the rent now to pay our share. Get with the program
Next you're going to be telling us at every single U2 song was specifically meant for a specific purpose. The 50s music came out none of their music had anything to do with anything that has to do with women's rights and oppression did it? Or it specifically was for then? It wasn't meant for anything else as the music was laid out later on? And if so, please tell us why people keep covering songs from years and years before? And why do they take them and turn them into Political songs anyway? You have just opened up a can of worms with me that you will not believe
Not arguing politics, but I remember listening to this album when it was released in the US whilst riding around Lake Powell, Utah. I late actually saw the band play at The Scope in Norfolk, VA. when they were touring on the "Blue Sky Mining" tour. Opening show, North American tour. In a nutshell The Australian government decided to evict remote Aboriginal communities from their ancient lands without compensation. Men, women, children and babies were just unceremonially dumped from their homes and land.....
@@shadowthehedgehog4737 Its about how the colonists of the British empire stole the land from them, basically exactly the same as they did to the native Americans.

One of my favorite songs in 1980s and 1990s,until now , never erased ...

Love the brass sounds and hero theme sound in parts of this. Plus it’s such an anthem!
