Joe, ive just had the same problem with insurance as id been off the road for 2 years, so no NC....Was getting quotes as high as 20k😮....ended up getting a new ktm 890 duke for £1400 a year, will do for now. The Snake Pass only ever was good at reasonably high speed - so if you didn't do it back in the nineties you'll never know. Now speed limits are so pedestrian I've started cruising around in an open-topped car. 😁😁😁
I worked in news broadcasting for 8 years, and you are right. Some channels/websites are so biased and rubbish. But there are good ones out there, just keep your eyes open and don't believe everything you see. I try not to watch too much news, you get a really negative world views because negative news gets the most clicks so all the positive news on the world is ignored.
Thanks guys. It is nice to have you two rant for me on a podcast. I agree on pretty much all topics. Baron you’re a legend as you know, Joe Id never heard of you before this but great effort for all. Keep this shit coming to separate us from the saturated bullshit social media is today. Great job 👏🏻
Absolutely loved this podcast guys. I’m in Australia, sitting here going f¥€£ yeah we have the same issues here. One thing we’ll beat you with is the state of our roads. We can still get out on our bikes for a reasonable ride, just have to pick the right roads.
Really enjoyed it and I hope you do more - completely on the same page with the C vid crap. But confused about the not buying a bike because of insurance situation. I just recently got my first bike - Honda 500CBF. Not a £20k BMW of course, but absolutely loving it, enough power for a good while, amazing economy 85mpg after 500 miles), and about £15 a month insurance. Don’t get the attitude of top of the range or nothing🤷🏻♂️. Look forward to more anyway 👌🏻
Picking up your phone at 2:35 and texting/scrolling or whatever then paying attention to pot plants for nearly a minute as someone tells you they have no self esteem 🙄.
Brilliant podcast and I’m glad it wasn’t mainly about cars or bikes. ❤❤❤ 25:54 Sorry I don’t get the comments about plastic caps. You can twist it or take it off pretty easily if it really bothers you that much. Aluminium is way better anyway than dosing your body with extra microplastics.
Speed limits are being reduced to reduce the damage to crumbling road surfaces. Nowt to do with safety. I don't have proof but it makes a certain sense to me as it will reduce the financial burden on councils.
For the most part dropping the average speed down by 10mph won't really affect the roads. Also councils don't set the speed limits its the traffic authority. Councils can request changes in certain area but it's not really their job.
Personally I don’t have an issue with 20 mph across London. Still doesn’t stop the Audi/Tesla/C63s steaming around without a care in the world but the data dies suggest getting hit at 20 is far preferable to 30.
Two blokes I could go down the pub and put the world to rights with! Biking doesn’t need to be that expensive. An inexperienced biker with no 0 no-claims is going to pay over the odds. Do what everyone else does - get an MT07 - build up your no claims on cheaper bikes that are cheaper to own and insure. I pay £85 for the year on a Triumph 1050 and £130 on a Panigale 959. An R1250 GS adventure would cost me £288 for the year so they are comparatively expensive to insure so if that’s a problem - choose another bike.
How spooky, I've been cursing a Innocent Energise bottle all day, not realising the lids are now designed to stay connected. Every day's a school day and a little harder 😂🤦
Once you’ve got a years no claims under your belt the insurance absolutely plummets. You can gain the no claims on anything including mopeds so you could buy a £600 moped and insure it for less than £100, not even ride it and sell it after a year and have a years no claims.
@ShalomBrother ah ok, I cant remember who asked that question but they definitely did cus I remember thinking they're getting wise to the insuring a scooter to build no claims thing lol
So true. I passed my test and it cost me £700 to insure my gsxr 750. After 1 years no claims it dropped to £180. Like you say i literally could of got that 1 years no claims on a moped and i would have been able to insure most things for peanuts 😂
My timeline is very similar to Joe. Big bike licence jul22, bought 748 and jul23 a 1250GSA. GSA insurance in the sticks £650, suburbs of London £2300, Wild West of close to Brixton £4600! As you say a one in four chance of it walking! Sadly I wish I hadn’t bought it. Such a good machine but mental insurance.
So true about the BS, I've seen it all my life but unfortunately lack the confidence. Also, Joe seems like my kind of guy and I understand the damage done to the likes of us you're talking about, makes my blood boil.
Do it… I promise you regret if you don’t. It’s not hard. Stick to Germany as the driving standard very good and stay away from cities…. It’s awesome and actually nicer to ride in than the Uk. Roads are better, less traffic😊. Do it!!!

On the topic of driving in Switzerland I felt I had to point out couple of “good” points about the swiss system. Before I start, let me just make the point that while I live in Geneva, I am not swiss (so unbiased view?). It is true that in Switzerland you do get in to trouble if you exceed the speed limit by a significant margin. But, and unlike in the UK and France, you can have as many “smaller” speeding fines as you want as there is no points system on your license. Getting nine tickets in a week because you did not notice a new speed camera on your way to work does not have any other ramifications than having to pay the fines (CHF 40 each). It does not put your license at risk or influence your insurance. You can exceed the speed limit by 20kmh (and slightly more on the motorways) before getting a more serious fine. Even then, a polite letter apologising your stupid behaviour and good reason why you need your license goes a long way. And if you live close to the boarder like I do, you can always pop into France, enjoy slightly more freedom. Although I know from experience that they will take your license quite easily there as well…
Be good to have a conversation about if a road bike in the UK is the way to go or a track bike is a better way for people to go and then do a comparison on cost at two different budget levels. Good thing you bought the insurance thing up as I checked and the bike I was looking at getting was 5 time more than my other choice.
