Thank you for sharing your opinion. The phrase "be fruitful and multiply" is found in several verses in the Bible. The primary verse is Genesis 1:28, which says: "God blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. This command is given to the first humans, Adam and Eve, after their creation. This is one of the first and primary commandments God gives humanity. I hope this helps clarify the importance of motherhood and fatherhood in Christianity.

@@holyrebel seems like there's a lot of interpretive work going on in that position. I believe it's all down to interpretation, I just questioned the agenda behind any given understanding of religious text. what might be the motivation?

Thank you for your response and for raising an important point about interpretation and motivation!
It's true that interpreting religious texts involves understanding the historical, cultural, and theological context in which they were written. Different interpretations can arise from varying perspectives and experiences. In Christianity, we strive to interpret the Bible in a way that is faithful to its teachings and reflective of God's love and truth.
The command to "be fruitful and multiply" in Genesis 1:28 is interpreted as an affirmation of the value of family and the importance of procreation. This perspective underscores the significance of motherhood and fatherhood, which are seen as vital roles within Christian teaching. Esteemed theologians such as St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and contemporary scholars like N.T. Wright have emphasized the importance of this passage in understanding God's design for human relationships and society. These men have spent their entire lives studying the scriptures and the languages they are written in to faithfully interpret these passages.
The motivation behind emphasizing traditional family values in Christianity is rooted in the fundamental Christian teaching that these values reflect God's design for human relationships and society. Promoting the importance of motherhood and fatherhood aims to uphold the family as a foundational unit of society, providing stability, love, and support.
St. Augustine, one of the early Church Fathers, wrote extensively on the nature of marriage and family in his works such as "The Good of Marriage." St. Thomas Aquinas, a key figure in medieval Christian thought, also explored these themes in his seminal work "Summa Theologica." Their interpretations carry significant weight in Christian theology and underscore the continuity of life and the nurturing environment that families provide.
However, it’s also important to recognize that Christians are called to love all individuals, regardless of their life choices or circumstances. The core of Christianity is to follow Jesus' teachings of love, compassion, and humility. As stated in John 13:34-35, Jesus commands, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
While interpretations may vary, the guiding principle for Christians should always be love for others and love for God. Engaging in discussions about faith with understanding and empathy helps build bridges and love others.
Thank you for your engagement and thoughtful questions. It is through respectful dialogue that we can better understand each other's perspectives and motivations.

For context, I am a gay woman that grew up in the Catholic Church and still attends mass almost every Sunday. The problem that a lot of people are having with the speech is that some women don’t want to have kids and that’s OK. Some women will not be happiest “serving a man,” and that’s OK! For the part about pride, I understand the Christian perspective of pride being a terrible sin, but pride when it comes to LGBTQ people is more about being proud to be yourself rather than the sort of pride that is a sin. Plenty of people that celebrate LGBTQ pride are incredibly selfless, they’re just proud to be part of a community just as Christian people are.

I’d like to add also that not everyone who goes to Catholic school for college is Catholic. Sometimes people might get a really good scholarship and go to that school or they have a program that they’re really interested in. You don’t have to be Catholic to go to a Catholic college.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. Harrison Butker's speech reflected his own beliefs, as well as Catholic teaching since it was at a catholic college and most of those graduating were Catholics. If you are at a Catholic college you are going to hear basic catholic teaching on marriage and sexuality. It's natural for different parts to resonate differently with people. Christian doctrine holds specific views on marriage and sexuality, which differ from those of the LGBTQ community. However, Christians are called to love all individuals, “hate the sin love the sinner.”
Your insights add valuable depth to this conversation, and we appreciate your engagement and openness.

The fact that his speech was "controversial" is strong evidence proving the moral decay of the modern American public.

It's controversial bc hes telling women that their lives start truly when they have children... keep in mind he says this at a GRADUATION, which means he thinks all the schooling the women have taken is useless and they havent lived their lives, and should just be mothers.

@APerson-wn7wg That is not what he said. He said that his wife believes her life truly started when she became a mother. He was not saying that this is true for all women.
