  • Hi Guys - In 1946, 8yr old, Katherine Van Alst went missing from her family's camp site in Devil's Den State Park. In an unlikely twist, she was found alive 6 days later…but, get this, she was found 30+ miles away and 600ft higher in elevation than from the location she had gone missing. How did she survive??

Devils den is right up the road it’s a big tourist area , it’s right out of town , easy to get too, schools takes children there for field trips it’s, very public and to me would be hard to get lost unless you enter one of the caves. But my point it’s actually like a beginner park in most respects.

You are probably refering to the strange case of Casey Hathaway, 3 years old boy, from Jan. 2019 on Eastern side of North Carolina. Missing for 2 days from his Grandmothers back yard. The nights were very cold, low 20s and rain and mist and just had normal cloths and a light jacket. Found surrounded 2 days later cried out not very far from home, from a place that had been searched numerous times, and was indeed deposited in thorn or bramble type bush that would have been difficult to walk into. An experienced searcher stated he could not figure out how the child survived and should have died from exposure. However Casey was in very good shaped and stated he was with and kept warm at night by a bear. When found, he only wanted to watch cartoons. His Mother and some others theorized this was an Angelic Bear. My thoughts went to a Female Bigfoot, whether she stole him for a couple of days, or he simply wandered off (this area is very forested) and she rescured him. Then his older cousin told me that his favorite cartoon was Masha and The Bear, which I looked up on youtube. This bear was far more animated and always walked and danced around, then Yogi Bear could ever wish for. At 3 years old, this would be a childs idea of what an actual bear would be. Of course now Casey is 8 and would know what a real bear was. I wish someone would interview him and place in front of him a picture of a bear on all fours and another of the Patterson Bigfoot.

@@highlanderNC-mr8fe This was the Casey Hathaway case, 3 years old at that time. Jan. of 2019. Missing 2 days from Grandma's yard. Hundreds of searchers and found 2 days later not far from where he disappeared. The 2 nights missing were very cold, low 20s. Trained experience searchers were astounded about his very good condition when found in briars he would not have walked into, and were most surprised he did not die of exposure. Casey stated he was with a bear and it kept him warm at night. Then wanted to go inside and watch cartoons. Casey's older cousin told me his favorite cartoon was Masha and the Bear. I watched a youtube of this cartoon and The Bear was always walking and dancing and such like a human and much more animated than Yogi Bear. At 3 years old this would be his impression of a real bear. For me I believe he spent those 2 days with a Bigfoot and probably a female.

I’ve heard that in the case of missing children, searchers believe children are more likely to travel down rather than up. It’s believed it’s easier. It’s been my own experience while searching for my two year old who went missing near our home, that even as young as she was, they will go up. We lived near the dunes by a beach and we were moving into our new home. She suddenly disappeared and out we all went to search for her. My gut told me to go to the bushy area because that is what I’d have done. Even as a two year old it was clear that she was curious about the mysterious as I had always been. I had two path options, go on the flat path or go up the dunes into the forested area. My gut said up. I found her on the lookout. On her tiny legs she had walked up quite a steep incline. Always look up too.

She found water to drink and berries to eat, what a resourceful little girl. Often state parks have visitor centers, nature talks, and plant walks. Perhaps she learned what berries to eat at the park before she got lost. Kids can be very observant, fast learners.
When i was a kid, pretty much all kids were taught, if you get lost, try to find a high vantage point, like the top of a hill, or even climb a tree to see if you can see a land mark you recognize , and following water downstream usually leads to civilization.

Times have changed. When I was eight years old, I had to do a 12 mile round trip to a little store to pick up food for my family. My dad worked on the Great Lakes, and my mom didn't drive. So I made that trip a couple of times a week, filled up my bicycle basket, and got food for the family. That included signing for credit and then paying it. Yes, it sucked, but it needed to be done. It was terrible and wonderful all at the same time.

Great historical, background and inspirational story. If she was eight in 1946, that means that she would have been born in 1937 or 1938. This said, she was a child during the Great Depression and World War 2 when people had to be very resourceful and resilient just to live, and was quite possibly, among the reasons for her survival!

This missing case had so many missing 411 points that I’m glad you mentioned Mr. Paulides.
The first 411 point I noticed was the name of the park they were in, but there were many more.
I heard of another case of a missing young girl in Arkansas that was more recent and very interesting.
This other case occurred in northern Arkansas; I believe it was along the Buffalo National River. She was hiking with her Grandparents who did not believe that she got outdoors enough so they took her for a hike to a waterfall along a river bluff trail. The girl lagged behind and in an effort to catch up, she took to a game trail and was instantly lost.
She also instantly gained a little girl companion, (Third Man Syndrome) that stayed with her until just before she was found. This little girl led the missing girl around, showed her where they could sleep and constantly told jokes; she also gave the missing girl a name that she wished to be called.
How the missing girl was located was also very strange and has some parallels in some missing 411 stories.
Two local men got it in their head somehow that they knew where the missing girl was at so they went to search hq and tried to get searchers to go there and look for her. The search bosses said that was a place that was too far and she couldn’t be there because she would have to have gotten down the nearly impossible to negotiate river bluff.
The two men were convinced the missing girl was where they thought she was even though they didn’t know why they had that thought in their heads.
They got two horses and rode to the spot and there sat the missing girl. This was the last spot the missing girl slept and when she awoke there sometime before her rescue, her little companion was gone.
When relating her story she told of her joking little companion and locals knew that some years before a little girl with a very similar but not identical name had died tragically, very near to where the missing girl disappeared.
After being returned to her family the girl that had been missing constantly had jokes to tell and never repeating any for some good little period of time.
Her parents said she had never told jokes before she went missing.

Amazing story, Chris. Love the collapsable pot AND the tent!❣️p.s. Get an infusion ball (used for loose tea) coarsely grind some of your favorite coffee and have a cuppa worth waking up for! (Practice at home to fine tune the amount of coffee per cup and take a spoon with you that holds the proper amount.) From someone who would rather drink swamp water than bad coffee! 😝🤣🐅

Great Video Chris, also, Cheers, happy St Patrick's Day! In the Irish:
Slainte'! Agus Lá fhéile Pádraig sona dhuit. Briefly, my mother, born in 1909, wandered off as a 3-1/2 year old from home, she remembered falling asleep in a corn field during the day, and missing untill 400AM when she recalled people with kerosene lamps standing over her. She said she hid at first from the searchers, afraid of who they might be.

That is an incredibly amazing story of survival for a young girl only eight years old, and to know to cool her swelling feet in colder creek water is astonishing. It kind of makes one wonder if there really wasn't another source of coaching by our North American cryptid bigfoot. Thirty miles of walking seems a lot for a youngster to keep wandering off that far, it seems she may have been carried. Thanks Chris for this fascinating story.

🇨🇦I was 8. Algonquin park Ont. I and a new friend rowed across the lake to see the white trees. We didn’t think of bears 🐻 or being lost. After many hours heading back to our camper I came up out of a ditch and a ranger drove up and asked if I was me. Yes i said. He said get back to camp everyone is looking for you. I was surprised. My parents seemed calm. Different times. Children were credited with resiliency and let be As a parent I was too afraid to let our son wander around all day in Algonquin park. 😮
Great story Chris. Weird how she got so far away from camp. One thing being afraid of getting in trouble I never told of the friend the boat the white trees. I said I was at the playground. No more questions were asked.

I gave her plenty of heart-attacks when I was a young girl out there in the wilderness all by myself, but yes, she was proud of me just as I am sure your parents are proud of you.. Again, thanks for your stories. Keep hikin'!

There are a few of these nearly-missing-411 stories that are really interesting. It seems like they just got spirited away to a different dimension or glitched into a different location. Would be interesting if we could talk to these people as adults and see if they remember any additional details.

The majority of these stories are kinda like fiction. Real missing person cases, but Paulides adds his 'twist' to several of them. Any missing person case that is labelled as '411', is just an attempt to taint it, garner interest.

A lady recently went missing in our state park here and ended up over in the next state. She was a regular hiker and knew the trail well but when she was found two days later, alive and disoriented, had no idea how she’d gotten there or gotten so lost. I feel like these are abductions by non humans and then the person is returned. Anyway, great story as always Chris. Love the tent can’t wait to see it. Thank you for sharing your video.

Hi Chris, what strikes me about this is that it sounds like she vanished in an instant from being right near her brothers and then to travel that far that high up in elevation - sounds to me like she was found wandering, taken care of and taking to a place of safety where there was food safe to eat. Also in observance, her bathing suit doesn't appear indicative to that era - did they have 2 - piece bathing suits for adults and kids in the 1940s? Interesting story and I'm so glad for the good outcome - It would be interesting to speak with her today.
