Just like most BMW thermostats, it is a generally mechanical thermostat where it opens and closes due to heat. However, it is also has a heating element inside of it that the computer can use to open it prematurely for whatever reason it may see fit.
Bingo. Audi does this too. The electrical portion of the thermostat isn't important, even if it fails the mechanical thermostat will still open and close correctly.

No it doesn't clog up the heater or the radiator. I've used similar products multiple time without any issues. I've also blew a head gasket and got the engine so hot it seized up and after I fixed it I drove it for anouther seven years with no issues. Just luck of the draw. The thermostat being stuck is what blew the head gasket in the first place. But with the amount of valve train noise due to it over heating that engine is not goin to last long anyway.
@@jasoncampbell5518 These kind of cooling system stop leak products will eventually clog or at the very least will reduce flow to both the heater core and radiator. Ask a legit mechanic to show you the internal mess it can cause. Now for a vehicle that you don't have money to correctly repair or isn't worth the money versus value then these products can be a good option. I would advise to flush out the cooling system after the leak has been sealed.
@@vegasfordguy I can relate. I had an 1990 town car that constantly ran hot. I didn't know better at the time and just kept running it. Eventually the head gasket blew and we pulled the heads. I found what looked like glitter. Many different sealers that plugged up all of the cooling channels and found a solid ring that sealed the thermostat shut. That's when I learned any fix in the can is a gimmick to get something "working" so you can pawn the problem off on someone else.
@@Moose1207 👍👍I had a Pontiac Bonneville GXP with a Cadillac Northstar. (Famous for overheating) I used a stop- leak product that looked like glitter, worked really good. Then, eventually the thermostat froze up, it would get really hot, then I would stop driving it, cool it off, add water ,repeat. Someone suggested I just remove the thermostat, which I did. The engine thrived on it. Think you only use the stop- leak once or twice, after that it really gums up the works. If you remove the thermostat, the check engine light will come on. So I needed to replace it to get a smog, that's when my problems began again!

Thanks for showing us the diagnostic twists and turns. Liked your can-do attitude in getting to the bottom of the problem. There are a lot of unfair comments posted here that reflect the poster’s inattention and bias. Sam wasn’t trying to do a rebuild that some seemed to expect. They totally missed Sam’s intention - which was to figure out what was the problem and make economic decisions to get it going and drive it as a serviceable beast of burden until it dies. For example - drilling through the thermostat wasn’t a fix, it was done as diagnosis. Didn’t you hear what he said? In the end he found a replacement for between 60-70. In the end I think he did a pretty good job of it and we got to see the trials and tribulations of taking on the challenge and even learnt a thing or two along the way. Thanks Sam. I’ve subscribed.
I sure as hell wouldn’t drive it back to Ohio lol. That vehicle can be so expensive when things start going and being it has over 200k miles and head gasket issues already I wouldn’t be looking forward to electrical problems, front end issues etc.

Out of all the garage youtubers I've seen videos of, this has to be a new low. quick fix sealant instead of a proper gasket replacement and bypassed the thermostat by drilling holes in it and called it the day after three videos. Zero learning except to give people ideas on how to fool unsuspecting buyers.
Pretty sure he said in a past video that the engine is already pretty much worthless and he only did this as like a last resort before buying a junkyard motor. As for that second point... that's fair but you'd have to be pretty "unsuspecting" to buy something that runs like this
@@Over9000scouters He said that the gasket replacement was labor intensive and people often opt for engine replacements instead. But he did neither, just sprayed in some gunk and that's it. Hey Sam I hope you and your family had a great Christmas. Cant wait to see what you've got in store for 2020.
Just like most BMW thermostats, it is a generally mechanical thermostat where it opens and closes due to heat. However, it is also has a heating element inside of it that the computer can use to open it prematurely for whatever reason it may see fit.
Harrison B exactly what I was going to post
If you put 12v dc to it it should open on its own in a few minutes. didn’t need boiling water.
Bingo. Audi does this too. The electrical portion of the thermostat isn't important, even if it fails the mechanical thermostat will still open and close correctly.
Yep, here to post this as well.
I would replace the thermostat just to be safe
Gotta give credit when credit is due man good job bringing that car back alive

After watching all this, I'd tell you to keep it. Lol. I would have fixed it the right way, not the cheap way.
The sensor on the thermostat is the temperature sender, connected to the dash temp gauge. It does not control the thermostat in any way.
How about an electric assisted thermostat?
You are wrong. This is a thermostat heater which heats up to open thermostat further when required.

Real bandaids are expensive, so I'm using some recycled tape I took off an Amazon box and renewed with a little generic white glue. It's literally the same thing, but costs basically nothing.
LOL 😁
You have to remove the thermostat before using any of those head gasket sealers. It will also clog up the heater core and radiator.
Did you even watch the any of the other videos?

Samcrac, great video! I love your positive attitude! Nothings a hassle and that's a great lesson in life!
As for that second point... that's fair but you'd have to be pretty "unsuspecting" to buy something that runs like this
Is it me, or was the timing chain making noise the whole time?
@@Over9000scouters He said that the gasket replacement was labor intensive and people often opt for engine replacements instead. But he did neither, just sprayed in some gunk and that's it. While in other channels they rebuilt engines that was in worse shape just because they wanted to show their skills.
That's exactly what I thought too, and that is, to never buy a car from this prick lol.

New thermostat and radiator cap anytime a car over heats along with new coolant and and oil change is what I’ve learned. It also helps to use the correct coolant (very important). What’s the the rattling noise? Lifters or timing?
At that age it sounds fine. My 1FZ-FE motor sounds like an sewing machine or tractor at 240k.
But head gasket sealer in a bottle is a ticking time bomb. That stuff is only a temporary quick fix to get you home.
Great series Sam. My son noticed me watching your videos on my phone and asked, "is your car broken? If not, why are you watching someone fix cars?"
Your videos remind me of my childhood. My dad, uncles, and grandpa use to fix cars. I thought they would teach me their craft but they wanted me to go to college.
Maybe it was for the best but I still remember getting under a car and asking questions or handing my dad a wrench.
Thanks for trip down memory lane.

Your thermostat, "Fix" would result in slow warm up in cold winter weather and over heating in hot summer weather or during period of high engine power use. It should have been replaced once you diagnosed a thermostat failure.
Basically normal operation for any car of that age.
So your saying that he needs to drill more holes.
@@justevil100 No, that would just approach having a wide open thermostat all the time and further negatively impact cold weather drivability. What I wrote was that the thermostat needed to be replaced.
@@NGC1433 We have very different definitions of what constitutes normal operations.
