Time for a LS swap. And a custom ECU so most of the features keep working. Finally a Range Rover more reliable and with reasonable maintenance figures.
Well thats the engine sorted. What about the rest of the rubbish stuff? Wheels bearings electrical etc. Why not swap everything for a Land Cruiser and get a reliable vehicle right off.
It was a little hard to tell but I think the piston tool was in upside down. The curve of the tool is supposed to match the curve of the pad. Flip it around and it might have fit.
We have a Range Rover specialist garage near us and last time we passed my wife asked why the cars parked on the front never moved, naturally I told her it's because they don't like to stray too far as it's too risky.
My 2013 Range Rover Sport HSE is one of the best cars I have owned. Not THE best as my 2005 Jaguar XJR was THE best. I do all my own work on cars otherwise I could not afford them. I have dealt with a rear brake issue, rodent wire issues, and a failed screen issue. All solved relatively easily. The biggest issue on the Rover is gas mileage and the gas has to be premium. I am retired and do not commute .
Never a dull moment in Land Rover ownership, my l322 turned itself into a v6 by melting 2 pistons and my mother's l405 has had various issues with the hydraulic sway bar system.
Yeah. I get random failures with my sway-bar system, as well. It still happens so seldom, I haven't bothered to diagnose it properly, since it resets itself once I restart the engine.
@@miscbits6399 Well, I wish JLR would have just used the coyote 5.0 instead of making that aj133. They were owned by ford at the time. But I wish there was an easy swap for my l322 to get it running again.
Mercedes could learn from that with their ISM actuation countdown to failure system...I haven't had any problems with mine but it's kind of like SBC. Even if nothing breaks, after a pre-programmed number of actuations, it will force you to go to the dealer to replace.

I hope you opened the master cycliner when your compressing those calipers in. You can ruin the seals in that brakes and cause job to cause more damage then just replacing your pads. Brakes will be spongy.
Awesome video! I have the same exact car and it’s been quite reliable from 40k-68k miles so far. Only one issue with the fuel pump dying and leaving me stranded 😂. Love the car to pieces tho. Enjoy and hope you are able to fix it!
I've had a disco 3 highest trim level 50K all service records doctor owned and didn't get to keep it too long because a friend of mine wanted it so bad I didn't get to get to the hate part I only had the love part of the relationship so I guess that's all right. I'm slightly knowledgeable I guess you can say with the the Mechanicals and electricals with all the Jaguars I own and have owned as well as my tr8 convertible with the Rover 3.5 L V8 with a offenheiser intake and Holley four-barrel. Because you're not the usual person commenting after the fact such as high miles or some missed preventive maintenance and then the person has an engine issue such as head gaskets and losing coolant. So with that in mind perhaps you would like to be proactive and let me know how it goes over the years but if your vehicle is at 65 or $70,000 miles do some research and if you want some input I'll be happy to give it to you but you should run across some different cooling system sealers that use different ingredients that will coat the inside of your cooling system including that little edge of your head gasket your heater core your radiator your plastic cooling components with basically Metalized and fibrous coating that creates a bond and a layer and if you did have a pinhole leak somewhere what have you it closes them off permanently. So the point is is that if you add this to the system and there's two kinds there's the kinds that works with antifreeze and then there's the kind you have to drain everything out do a little flush add their elixir and then you run it for the recommended time and mileage and then you only have water with it then you flush all that out and then just top back up with your 50/50 mixed as it would have came from the factory and personally I recommend the prior version because it's easier sublimate, effective and efficient the primarily because you're not losing the coolant that you have in there you're not having to spend time doing the other steps plus you leave it in there so that means that little bits of it can continually work Beyond the initial process. And then when you have passed another couple of years or 20,000 miles of driving then add the same stuff unless something is recommended or comes on the market that is better and do the process again I just do that every 2 years or 20,000 miles and see if those little Coatings you can continually add keeps what would have been eaten away from happening thereby making your engine almost Bulletproof outside of some other calamity like a timing chain issue or something we won't get into that right now the better is something you'll want to check or have checked at around 100k to confirm that all your tensioners and guides are good and there's no stretch on the chain or wear. I think if you maintain a proper timing setup and the proactive head gasket repair cooling system repair coatings you'll get over 200 probably even $250,000 MI on the vehicle without the usual headaches from now until that milestone sorry this is a long and I'm just talking so there's not a lot of commas and periods inserted

I wish I would've had the same experience my 2010 lasted 7k all kinds of elec trical issues replaced by rr with another 2010rr supercharged this was better lasted 30000 miles before issues started piling up specially not starting traded that in for the new 2014 rr supercharged this one turn out to be the worst rr the factory bought itback.never again

Wouldn't be surprise if the way to fix the Range Rover, would be leaving it unlock in that parking lot. Somehow thieves get it to run almost surprisingly fast. Meanwhile breaking down in owner's hands.
Yeah you'll have to leave some Jordans on the floorboard, a couple C notes on the armrest ,couple 40's(as in beverages)in the door pocket and they'll steal it then for sure even with everything on the inside saying don't we're not even sure it'll make it down the street without getting hot or outlasting the Hot Pursuit vehicle Chase

On my SQ7 (the diesel one), the regulator "pressure too high & too low" was just a fried regulator sensor on the HPFP... no code about the sensor. Just the high and low pressure warnings
It's fairly new so shouldn't be an issue but always a good habit to loosen the fill plug before loosening the drain plug. This is in case you can't get the fill plug open you don't want to be SOL. With this that won't be an issue cause you can suck it out from the top but many cars don't have that option so just a good habit to get into no matter the vehicle.
Another great video! Just as a note on that your generic brake piston tool...if you pause at 4:39, you can see the plate that pushes against the outside of the caliper from inside is upside down. The outer radius curve should be turned 180 degrees so it's toward the outside of the rotor arc (you have the curved area toward the inside). Turning that would allow the tool more room to be centered on the piston. I use this tool often and remember this happening to me when I first got it...until I realized the plate was positioned incorrectly. Anyway, looks like you got the piston compressed in the end so all is good.

The older ones already have cheaper fixes for the fragile suspension. I'm waiting for Land Rover to throw in the towel has just sell re-badged Lexus SUV's.
I've owned Range Rovers for 10 years now with a total of 600,000 km on the clock, and I've only had one air-strut failure in that time. I've had more rusted out coil springs go out on previous vehicles I've owned. Additionally, you completely ruin the handling of the car by doing the conversion, both on road handling and especially off-road, since the air suspension is simulating a beam axle, which you lose, after a conversion. It's not complicated either. There is one control computer, which isn't especially expensive, there are two valve blocks. Not very expensive either, then there are the air lines, the compressor and struts front and bags rear. The front struts are, sort-of expensive. About $400 apiece, but they are dead simple to replace compared to a coil spring. 20 minute job, compared to a 2 hour job.
The older ones were the best, I had a D2 , 2000 model auto TD5 , never had any issues except normal wear and tear. Sold it after 5 years for about the same price as I had paid

99% of time “Random misfire” is nothing but “bad” fuel meaning fuel contaminated with water o deteriorated ethanol, that’s the first thing you have tu address…you’re welcome !
In most cases, "lifetime" means the lifetime of the warranty. Manufacturers don't give a toss if the car fails catastrophically after the warranty is up. They just want to be able to brag about low maintenance costs.
To answer Sam’s question from another video re: thumbs down. He said why would someone give a downer after watching for just a few seconds. In my mind, correct me if I am wrong, the thumbs down tells the algorithm that something in that video or on that channel you no longer wish to see.
That ZF transmission has one temperature sending unit, and that unit most likely displays the temp inside the instrument panel. That temp will be the same temp displayed in the scan tool.
I love the diagnostic process with cars like this very interesting. You can see from the complexity of these engines why electric is the future! So simple in comparison.
A land rover made it over a 100k miles...that's like a lottery win. Perhaps the most unreliable vehicles ever built but high mileage used yup they're "cheap" provided you are or know a great mechanic to squeeze those last few miles out before it joins all its friends at the junk yard.
Welcome to the hell of Range Rovers. Mine has travelled further on a flatbed than I’ve actually driven it. It’s now sitting with its third Land Rover specialist (in Wales) waiting to see if they can figure it out. Out of commission for six months at this point. One of the main problems is that throwing parts at it to solve scanner-suggested problems is an extremely expensive solution. And even if you get the drivetrain sorted, the number of other potential bank account depleting issues (suspension, for example) is seemingly endless. As others have said, these vehicles seem so attractive… but unless you have your own fully equipped garage and endless time, knowledge, and money, just run away. Run away. If you ever waiver in your decision to not buy one, just watch these sorts of videos.
Meanwhile my daily driver 2012 Ram 1500 Laramie has had no breakdowns. You can choose to drive in comfort or sit on the side of the rode in elegance, I guess. For me, the choice was easy.
When I sold my House about 16 years ago, I almost bought a Range Rover, I really fancied one. Something in my mind held me back and I settled for a Volvo. I have never had an issue with a Volvo and would recommend them to anyone.
I sold one of these in 2010. 50,009 miles. The warranty cost for a 3 yr 36,000 miles was $14,960! If that doesn't tell you something I don't know what will...
Owned a Range rover and at 122k going strong BUT cheap gas will mess the entire fuel systems up, pumps, rails, injectors. People have to USE premium ONLY.
Always aproblem to solvewith a R/R, but cutting corners is the usually problem. I did nor see the gears being cycled when the gerabox was being filled, hence the fault codes. If the supercharger drive has sheared, then the engine will overfuel when starting. Its also worth doing a supercharger overhaul at high mileage. New injectors might be in order. Its a Ford engine by the way, not BMW.
In the UK people who buy Range Rovers live in pristine villages or wealthy suburbs and use them for driving the kids to school and doing the shopping. They are generally discarded after a couple of years in favour of a new one. As soon as they are put into heavy use they go pop.

It’s literally the first thing I thought, people always Ls swap it
Well thats the engine sorted. What about the rest of the rubbish stuff? Wheels bearings electrical etc. Why not swap everything for a Land Cruiser and get a reliable vehicle right off.
@@ndlovulwazi in this case is probably needing a new injector.
Na, Coyote and a Whipple. Be different.
That thing needs a 2UZ with a TRD supercharger. Basic and reliable.
It was a little hard to tell but I think the piston tool was in upside down. The curve of the tool is supposed to match the curve of the pad. Flip it around and it might have fit.
Sam definitely does an excellent job making the complexity of LR RR vehicle malfunctions seem so simple and easy to diagnose.
Any land rover with 100,000 miles is ready for the junkyard

It's a miracle it got to that many miles.

Nonsense - people in America don’t seem to understand quality and sophistication.
absolutely nothing wrong with that old discs literally as good as new from, a operational/performance perspective
There's nothing more natural than a Range Rover on a flatbed. Great closing, very very funny.
We have a Range Rover specialist garage near us and last time we passed my wife asked why the cars parked on the front never moved, naturally I told her it's because they don't like to stray too far as it's too risky.
Always nice seeing a LR RR in its natural habitat. On the back of a breakdown truck.
That's where most them stay was thinking bout getting one at one time glad I didn't
Factory V8 landies are awful but most aftermarket conversions work just fine. That should be a clue about landrover designers
@@miscbits6399 Well, I wish JLR would have just used the coyote 5.0 instead of making that aj133. They were owned by ford at the time. But I wish there was an easy swap for my l322 to get it running again.
I thought by this time they would figure it out. Seems like still nothing has changed.
That must be one of the most convenience neutral emergency release, at least they know you will be using it very often
Mercedes could learn from that with their ISM actuation countdown to failure system...I haven't had any problems with mine but it's kind of like SBC. Even if nothing breaks, after a pre-programmed number of actuations, it will force you to go to the dealer to replace.

nice work on the diagnosis Sam, looking at the CAN data to figure out it was indeed fuel related was very clever
I hope you opened the master cycliner when your compressing those calipers in. You can ruin the seals in that brakes and cause job to cause more damage then just replacing your pads. Brakes will be spongy.
Doesn't the auto-retract also auto-unscrew the cap then?
You have a great way with explaining complex topics. Very logical and fun to watch.

I have a 2016 RR diesel. I love it. So far, one plus years, no problems.
The biggest problem i think is the dealer i do not intend to use them we have quality independent shops here
On my SQ7 (the diesel one), the regulator "pressure too high & too low" was just a fried regulator sensor on the HPFP... no code about the sensor.
Thanks for bringing us along during your diagnostic. My blood pressure would rise every time I drove a Range Rover.

Ooh those wheels!! I can literally hear the grinding everytime the previous owner parked it by a kerb⚠️😲😳🤔
3 days before it broke down? You did better than i expected.
Someone could make a fortune creating an LS swap kit and an air suspension conversion kit for these things.

Samcrac: yes....
My buddy's 1966 Land Rover 88 ran forever and never broke down. Something to be said for simplicity.

Lifetime means it'll last the life of the car. The car lasts less than 100k miles 🤣
Exactly! People thinks "lifetime" means the owner lifetime 😂
I drive 2005 Rav4. Its easier to repair than a bicycle. I cant get enough of this plain simplicity. Just starts and drives every time.
There's a reason this range rover was on auction. You found out!

I’ve had friends with these and they spent a lot of time in the shop so it’s not unusual for them to have a lot of service history.

Ranges & jags are endless money pits
Owned a Range rover and at 122k going strong BUT cheap gas will mess the entire fuel systems up, pumps, rails, injectors. People have to USE premium ONLY.
Always aproblem to solvewith a R/R, but cutting corners is the usually problem. I did nor see the gears being cycled when the gerabox was being filled, hence the fault codes. If the supercharger drive has sheared, then the engine will overfuel when starting. Its also worth doing a supercharger overhaul at high mileage. New injectors might be in order. Its a Ford engine by the way, not BMW.
You should purchase an 06' BMW M5 next with the SMG transmission with over 100,000 miles. That would be entertaining to watch as well.
Beautiful .but no good if broken
In the UK people who buy Range Rovers live in pristine villages or wealthy suburbs and use them for driving the kids to school and doing the shopping. They are generally discarded after a couple of years in favour of a new one. As soon as they are put into heavy use they go pop.
The Pistons on the brake calipers are the same on Jeeps except you just access it through the touch screen.
