elams1894, it's a pleasure watching you work. Very nice workmanship. I'm particularly impressed at how you made your own fiberglass circuit board, instead of simply using regular perfboard.
Gosh, that was so cool! I thought you were making a new front, but no, you were making your own turret board. How cool was that :D Great vid man, and great end result!
Thanks Mr Huffy, yeah I really like amps, this build has been waiting in the wings for a while.. I'm really stoked with it, its got some massive grunt and nasty as tone.. fully over the moon!
You are AWESOME, your rebuild end up way better than the original, you should make a video of all the tones that you can get out of that sweet amp. I am from the beautiful Island of Puerto Rico and love Amps and I Have to say that you can build any Amp you want. You Rock \••/ YEAH !!!

I knew it was gonna get serious when you broke out the fiberglass! :-D Damn-fing job on your turret boards... Never thought of making my own. Thanks for the great idea! do the youtube world a favor and press your fucking caps lock key OFF,that's the rudest, most annoying thing you can possibly do on youtube.this just draws unwanted attention from people who cant stand this shit
Hey again sorry I keep referring backing to your channel but I find you very helpful and you have answered every Question I've asked and for that I thank you. so the two yellow wires on the secondary has one to ground and one to pin 1/6 on the first 12AU7 what exactly are they for? oh BTW I built my first Amp fender champ 5f1 sounds awesome thx for your knowledge and videos cheers
Hi Clint, no probs on the questions, all good. The yellow secondary wires from the primary tranny are a 50volt winding that control the bias of the output tubes. You nearly always have a 50 volt winding on a push pull amp just for that purpose. The bias circuit will often have a small pot so you can tweek the milliamps if the power tubes how you want them or according to different tubes. Well done on the champ, nice wee amps!
Nice work. The handmade fibre-glass boards are wonderful. The added choke is good. But , does the output transformer have the finesse? Stack is certainly large enough.
+elams1894 Wow ! great job.. I built that preamp for an EL34 single ended amp , just so i could turn it up to 10 .. I love that circuit.. Did you use the bounding diodes thing in there ?..
+mike jones LPs sound pretty sweet through this amp, real brown tone. Iv modded the tone stack slightly to cut back the dough punching mids if preferred and its very nice. It has a 60w output on this and its probably a little too powerful for my basement, but its super low noise and a great beast!! Thanks!
Thanks, yes you can use any kind of wax, polished onto glass in many layers, or a paint on solution such as PVA, which is like a liquid cling film. Cheers
this is really cool , at first I thought you were a manufacturer selling stuff but I see now that you are just a regular cool guy...how awesome is that?....when you were little did you tear everything apart and put it back together just to see how it worked? I've been messing with this stuff for years. and you make it look easy -and not so DEADLY...I have been knocked across the room by these circuits and that was a GREAT day...for those who don't know-it's dangerous-
Hey morning ED!.. yep I indeed ripped everything apart and put it back together as a kid.. still do ha, I can't stop myself. I can relate to the shock thing however I haven't been thrown across the room thank goodness. I took a massive hit off a capacitor once, that was enough to send me into safety overload mode with these things. The voltage is so high with big currents you just have to be so careful around the caps and mains switches. I bet you pulled things apart too as a kid yeah? Nice!
elams1894 I recently read about a guy who ALWAYS makes sure he has a cup of coffee in one hand when he's in an amp,so he doesn't ground across something...but I'd hate to spill a perfectly good cup o ' joe- so I use the 'chopsticks' method...I LOVE your home-made perf board as well...very cool-
Hello, you are a master of the amps ... first of all this is a translation since I do not know English I am Spanish sorry..I have a question I want to mount a 6n2p and a pcl86 to make a 6w on a vintage radio chassis but I have a doubt about the mass ... gnd .... and the chassis..I do not know whether to make the chassis driver with gnd ... and if that is how I do it ... I connect all the points of mass to a single point ... it can be done in several ... or only the potentiometers and jacks go.
Very inspiring to watch. I'm curious what surface prep you used on the inside of the wood that released the fiberglass after it dried... I just built a JTM45 based amp, but a little disappointed with it's' lack of preamp gain, I am thinking about converting the preamp circuit to 2204
Thanks Dave!! I mounted glass on the wood plates, 5mm thick glass, and then waxed them. I may have also used PVA release agent (liquid cling film). Indeed the 2204 has some big grunt in the preamp, now that would be a great hybrid.. 2204 based JTM45. Have a great day!!
A 220k and 1k resistor on V1 & V2 like the Superlead 12,000 series would probably fix the lack of usable gain. I just Modified a VHT -TMB Plexi clone and i left the 1 channel Clean but number 2 is pure 80's Metal just by changing a couple values in the pre amp its a monster. i also changed the coupling caps to kill a lot of the massive bass it had. If your working on a Jtm 45 you may wanna alter your Circuit to Superlead Values thats what i always do and they sound incredible!!!
Hi Tim. True, the JTM45 is a great circuit to modify your dream tone. I think also the JTM45 uses something like a 250uF electrolytic cathode bypass capacitor on V1. That would be quite woofy in the bass indeed. I would whack that down to a 0.68uF film cap, tighten things up considerably.
That's exactly what i did. 2 - .68 Panasonic caps across V1 and V2 and its kicking like a Chicken!! Lol. Those Mallory.0022uf in the Coupling caps deptment and your in Superlead territory! Good luck Brother You should post a short Demo of your amp!!!! Thanks
At first I thought: Wow, this amp looks like a dead sheep with this ugly grew coating. After replacing everything it's basically a new amp but I'd get rid of that terrible headshell ... Very nice video!
Cheers HV - Yeah this vid is going back a bit now. I would do things a wee bit differently, in fact, I plan to redesign the layout and rebuild. Will cerrtainly have a different chassis. The angle on the knob face really sucks. Funny when I look back now. Having said that, the tone out of that thing was immense. Cheers
??? how do you keep the fiberglass resin from sticking to the glass surface ..so want to try this looks nice to I thought about using plexiglass as a turret board really don't know it will stand up to heat
cool video! how did you do the turret board? was that glass that you sandwiched the fiberglass between? and if so how did you keep the epoxy from sticking to the glass. thanks in advance!
+Jonathan Hunt Hi Jonathan. For the turret board I used glass fiber, 2 layers of double bias and two of twill from memory, and yes sandwiched them been two glass plates. I buffed many layers of mould release wax onto the glass and then I applied some liquid PVA, which is like a wax film when dried. You could use just wax or just the PVA really, any one of those would work, just need to ensure that it doesn't stick. Thanks!!!
The Jansen Bassman is such a great amp. I think the greatest thing about them is their transformers and power supply circuit. It has 2 windings for High tension, 1 at 390 volts and the other at and 300 volts, as well as the windings for bias and the 12V for the filaments. This makes for a very stable amp when pushed hard. I really good Jansen Bassman is one of the best clean amps out there. This one was a total shambles inside so had to be rebuilt but they are keepers thats for sure! Thanks man!
Yeah, I'm no electrical expert but I've actually got two. One has all new tubes and a freshly rewound transformer. The other just keeps trucking along. Nice little pieces of Kiwiana
+Azen Kwed Thanks Azen! I did clean the chassis thoroughly as best I could. The chassis was weathered quite badly. I neutralised all the rust and sealed where I could, but its very hard to clean an old steel chassis to mint. Thanks again!
A JANSEN Bassman!? Never seen one of those before .. Soo you take the PCB and .. Put it in the bin, LOL fair do's! Ohh nice board/s!! Y'know I DID take a PCB amp, tore it up, cut tracks and make it into a design of my own - (EL84 Marshall-alike with Vib & Trem) Sadly I lost that one, with most my funky junk in a nasty Eviction, and I'm just finding my feet again - looking to resurrect the PCB-based one (with better board material) not least as the Orig Prototype was for a blues guitar dude, and I'd like to sort HIM out with something like the original build! 5:11 oh that DOES look nice... Sounds rather good too :)
Hi Pete, yes Jansen Bassman. It was a 50-60watt amp originally designed and built in New Zealand. It was made to resemble the Fender Bassman, however Fender slapped Jansen with copywriter in the 70's. The circuit was far from Fender though, having and extra tube and some other malarchy. The guts of the Jansen is at best sloppy. The one excellent thing though, about the Jansen, is that the transformers are huge, and exceptionally well built by Redfern Radio in Auckland NZ. The power tranny has a separate secondary winding for the output tubes screens. The tranny's make salvaging the Jansen worth while. I also have to admit that my building of this particular amp was not great, but I shall rebuild it (JCM800) after redisigning the layout to my current expectations. Hope you get on top of your eviction troubles and back on the amp building. Take care, and thanks for the update!!
@@elams1894 Nice Iron! I was just on the DrZ page (who me, namedrop?) going on about how you can get away with murder with high EL84 anode volts* if you keep the screen V down - nice to have a low Z G2 supply but these days there's power mosfets for that :) *Disclaimer Traynor did it, i did it - and tho I know it works with Mullards and tough ol Russian types not sure about today's tubes! PS Pearl made a silverface fender-alike amp that was all silicon inside .. We dont talk about that ;)
i am modding my Solid State JOHNSON REPTONE 15 Its 10-15 watts RMS. Going to blend the rocktron pedal ROCKTRON METAL PLANET DISTORTION to the pre amp. My question is. How can i add power to this thing and change the 8 ohms to switchable ohms.
You will probably get some extra power from the distortion pedal, however, other than that you will need to modify the circuit. That will mean major surgery which I wouldnt recommend as you will lose the character of the amp. You can only get 4, 8, 16 ohm taps if your output transformer has them available. If your OT has only 8ohm tap then that is all you can present to a speaker. Cheers
@@elams1894 i am putting in a mercury magnetics huge transformer and power supply then build a new amp with the components taken from the reptone. i am trying to build a custom amp kout of it. ThanX for your reply. Cheers :o)
@@zAvAvAz I see, very nice transformer! If you are intending on a tube amp circuit, then it is possible. Many ways to do it I guess, possibly with the pedal circuit as a complete extra stage. That would give you the extra power. You will still need a new output tranny with 3 taps however. Seems like an interesting project, all the best.
me again lol if this amp was cathode bias would you still use the yellow wires on the secondary im having trouble understand this part and I want so badly to learn cheerz again
Hi Clint. Yes you would still need the yellow wires which provide the 50 volts (negative) from the primary transformer, necessary to safely cover all bias methods. Yes, tubes are complicated things indeed.
That is the bias pot. I prefer a decent pot in there rather than the normal little crappy PC board type bias pot. Best get a chunky alpha pot in there or something.
The power transformer I'm using here has 2 HT secondary windings, one for filaments and one for output tube screens. Both need rectifying and they require 4 diodes each. I doubled up just in case, hence 16. It is a lot I agree. Thanks and good observation!!
Hi Jose. I do compliance work for exporting companies. I used to do a lot of building and looking back, I should have done engineering as I enjoy it the most. I just like to make things in my spare time when I can. I have very spare time now so any little bit of time is a blessing. Cheers Jose!
The power transformer has an additional high voltage secondary winding for the power tube screens, meaning that two high voltage secondary windings require rectification. I doubled the number of diodes for added protection, so there are quite a few indeed.
Hey Clint.. Let me check my google drive, I may just have this layout uploaded. I recall this JCM800 was a fairly stock layout though with a far beefier power section. I think I even doubled the diode circuit as per an old Janson 50w amp. I intend to redraw this layout which will be vastly different and with a massive ground return cable as its the earthing that really needs attention in this circuit. Not sure when that will be though, but it will happen as I love this amp and want a bullet proof point to point layout. Let me check..cheers
Hey bro yeah I've checked the rest of them online it's really the power supply I really need to get a grip on and like your video I want to re-use these massive trannys and chassis you've giving me a hunger for it to be honest I am some what new to this and the power supply is the kicker so any help would be much appreciated cheerz
No worries Clint. I'll fish out the drawing when I'm back in town towards the end of the week. Let me know your email in a PM and i'll email a scan to you. The tranny I used in this amp had an extra secondary winding so I could run the preamp section on one secondary winding and the output section on the other winding. A very stable power situation. Thats the way they used to build them back in the day in top amps. I think you can still get a dual secondary tranny from manufacturers these days, but of course they are a bit more expensive.
Good question, I can't actually remember why I doubled up on the diodes, I think it was solely as a back up. I think I recall the old Jansen had doubled up diodes and I stuck with it. This build was actually more focused on the power section circuit rather than the 2204 circuit as the PT had two secondary windings and I think that I just wanted it as stable as possible. Many years have passed since this build and I would do things very differently now, but well picked up indeed! cheers.
elams1894 nice. I pick up old amps when I can that are English that are busted. mainly just because I want the Iskra resistors and Mullard capacitors for my Marshalls as backups.
when you play one of these you need to move your hand back towards the bridge and learn to control the sound coming out by periodically muting the strings. you dont just randomly strum without reigning in the power and sound this puts out.
I respect your amp building skills and your passion. its amazing and you inspire me. this video made me want to start tinkering and make my own amp. and I did out of an old Silvertone tube organ. but I have to be completely honest, this amp sounds nothing like a JCM 800 and to be frank, im sure the camera microphone does it no justice either but this amp sounds like shit. still gave your video a thumbs up though.

Hope you get on top of your eviction troubles and back on the amp building. Take care, and thanks for the update!!
@@elams1894 Nice Iron! I was just on the DrZ page (who me, namedrop?) going on about how you can get away with murder with high EL84 anode volts* if you keep the screen V down - nice to have a low Z G2 supply but these days there's power mosfets for that :)
*Disclaimer Traynor did it, i did it - and tho I know it works with Mullards and tough ol Russian types not sure about today's tubes!
PS Pearl made a silverface fender-alike amp that was all silicon inside .. We dont talk about that ;)
@@petegaslondon DrZ page.. I'm a fan, love the Route66, the Paisley video is an insane tone.. Are you someone famous? (I couldnt find your post)
Is that a bias adjust knob on the turret board? Your amp sounds killer!
Yep thats a bias pot. It took quite a bit of tweeking but think I have the circuit pretty much right now. thanks heaps!
nice job
that was really fun to watch - where do you get quantity of resin and hardener?
Hi easyfly, I get my resin in bulk from the Nuplex outlet store in Auckland New Zealand. Much cheaper in bulk. Thanks
Never seen anybody make their own fiberglass for their circuit board before.
Esli vavka v golove nugno pit zelenku 👍🏻
Awesome !!!!
Thanks Lou!
You're Welcome !!........You're an Artist,........ I envy you to be able to do this !.....haha!
i am modding my Solid State JOHNSON REPTONE 15 Its 10-15 watts RMS.
@@elams1894 thanX a ton
You've been doing this many years!
me again lol if this amp was cathode bias would you still use the yellow wires on the secondary im having trouble understand this part and I want so badly to learn cheerz again
Hi Clint. Yes you would still need the yellow wires which provide the 50 volts (negative) from the primary transformer, necessary to safely cover all bias methods. Yes, tubes are complicated things indeed.
Just wondering, having seen videos of your awesome custom guitar builds, is there anything you can't do?
Ha thanks man!!
Hi, Very good job, did plan exist? (Sorry i' m French)
No, there isn't. Not even Marshall has a schematic for it. Sad, otherwise it could be easily found with google :(
god job!!
Thanks so much!! Really appreciate it!!
nice guitar...something you built?
+Andjelko Jakovljevic Thanks Andjelko! Yes I built the guitar too, have a great day!!
how much would something like this cost I have a 8/50w would really like to upgrade it any help would be much appreciated
thanks for replying man I see it will be no easy feet but hopefully I can come up with something like this one day cheerz bro
wheres the best place the order the components from?
How did you cut that glass after you made that board
4:32 what's that turny knob do on the turret board? would love to build a jcm 800 but where to start with parts idk.
That is the bias pot. I prefer a decent pot in there rather than the normal little crappy PC board type bias pot. Best get a chunky alpha pot in there or something.
How much that cost? I mean cost of electronics
What on Earth you do with 16 rectifier diodes?
The power transformer I'm using here has 2 HT secondary windings, one for filaments and one for output tube screens. Both need rectifying and they require 4 diodes each. I doubled up just in case, hence 16. It is a lot I agree. Thanks and good observation!!
I like this video
That is friggen awesome, I salute you sir! I'm thinking full body condom for safety!
Very nice P2P work man. Very fucking cool
Thanks Mike!!
Do you work with guitar building?
So good job, is not?
nice!!!!

If it's not too much to ask... what's your job?
Hi Jose. I do compliance work for exporting companies. I used to do a lot of building and looking back, I should have done engineering as I enjoy it the most. I just like to make things in my spare time when I can. I have very spare time now so any little bit of time is a blessing. Cheers Jose!
Despite all the hard work it still sounds like a hair dryer.
is that a Jensen speaker?
Are those actual "Radios pares" transformers ??? If so, wanna sell 'em ???
Damn im good. I know what i wanna do today '
I just wanna learn how to do that..!!
Holy... i would have been afraid that i messed up one connection somewhere and nothing would work. NJ.
+Flowthrough Thanks for all your kind words and comments Flowthrough! Glad you enjoyed the vids, Have a great day!
what are all those diodes for?
The power transformer has an additional high voltage secondary winding for the power tube screens, meaning that two high voltage secondary windings require rectification. I doubled the number of diodes for added protection, so there are quite a few indeed.
Hey Is there any chance of getting your layout of this amp ?
I cant find my JCM800 layout but PM me and I'll sort you out with an alternative 50watt layout (far superior layout than the 800), cheers
Amigo podrías pasar el esquema de ese amplificador
Are valves available?
+Abdul Jaleel Yes indeed they are, cheers!
Thanks
why does a 50 watt need so many diodes?
Good
when you play one of these you need to move your hand back towards the bridge
and learn to control the sound coming out by periodically muting the strings.
you dont just randomly strum without reigning in the power and sound this puts out.
diagrama plz
I respect your amp building skills and your passion. its amazing and you inspire me. this video made me want to start tinkering and make my own amp. and I did out of an old Silvertone tube organ. but I have to be completely honest, this amp sounds nothing like a JCM 800 and to be frank, im sure the camera microphone does it no justice either but this amp sounds like shit. still gave your video a thumbs up though.
no eggs?
+iixslashxii Sometimes, scrambled with NO milk. Just a real hot smoking pan, eggs straight in, swoosh around and onto buttered 5 grain toast... works every time
nice transformers
dat circuit
Was a bad ass way to approach a circuit board lol!
