  • Though it released 8 years ago, The Witcher 3 in my opinion is one of the best rpg's of our time. Doing my annual playthrough of the game got me thinking, why exaclty is it so darn good? Is it the gameplay? The visuals? The story? Turns out it's neither of those.

    Bro''... I'm a newbie barely finished my first walkthrough with a not so satisfying ending, when Ciri is supposedly dead or never wants to return, and Gerald ends up in a depressing stance with no swords at his side and monsters approaching stealthy supposedly aiming to expire him... with the final outcome left to our imagination...
    I'm on my second walkthrough trying to make Ciri the next empress and I do find the story compelling...
    I just finished first time the quest with the werewolf killing his own wife lured near the lair by her own sister... and I chose not to intervene in their family affairs which lead as you pointed out with the werewolf avenging his wife and killing his sister-in-law and then asking for the final punishment - or release from the curse - from Gerald...
    The arc story is epic and the side quests are full of good content... visuals are great and the hack and slash and loot gameplay is satisfying enough...
    I can't help to think it's inspired by Elders Scrolls and trying to deliver a better story, with the character this time - Gerald - actually having a voice speaking his lines... I think that's what sets it apart, the voiceover lines of Gerald, compared to other similar games where the character doesn't have audio dialogue...
    To me, I truly appreciate when Gerald says something like:
    "Hmm... I hate portals..."
    Or after defeating the Caretaker said:
    "What the f u c k was that?"
    That's what sets it apart in my opinion... and attention to details in the quest storyline... tho' the NPCs are really dull and need a lot of work...

      That first ending you got is the same one I got first time too. Of course I couldn't settle for that so I played the game again. Thankfully the second time around I got the best possible ending. And then I did the DLC...

      @@PlayerVersusGame yep, I was thinking by my standards that I did the right choices in the dialogue...
      like going with Ciri to face the witches and support her decision and advising her not to see the emperor, even if looks like it's her father - although was never explained how come that's her father, or if it was mentioned I've missed that part...
      Turns out those were the "wrong" choices for a "good" ending...
      So now second time around I'll try a different approach and I'll even try to win the war for the emperor so he can abdicate and let Ciri rule the empire...
      Alternate endings is what makes me log in and keep going...

    The world feels alive compared to many others where it is just a beautiful world where you do chores.

      the world is anything but alive ! the maps are riddled with question mark which pretty ruins exploration

      @PlayerVersusGame  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed. And I think more than alive it is agonist personal. Lots of games in this genre, yet few do as good job of preserving the raw nature of the world that take place in.

      @@arcadelounge4890I'll start by saying that the only thing I feel is missing, is a covered map that uncovers only when you explore it.Every now and then,I search for mods that do that,but haven't found one yet.
      As for your argument that question marks ruins exploration therefore the world doesn't feel alive, makes no sense.Yes it ruins exploration,but it has nothing to do with how the world feels.Even in real life you have Google maps and all locations are marked so exploration is ruined,but the real world still feels alive 😀
      What I meant by alive in the Witcher 3 is the atmosphere,the npcs,the willages,the dialogs,the weather,lighting,sounds all converge into an experience that at least for me seemed believable and made me forget I was playing a game.

      @@PlayerVersusGame all jokes aside great video man! I completely agree that the world is the strength of this game. Actually I feel like you only scratched the very tip of the iceberg with the Niellen quest and blody baron. There are some absolute gems of sidequests that really just manage to surprise the player with their content.
      Honestly if someone plays witcher 3 and didn't complete all the sidequests, I think they played the game wrong haha

    While I adore witcher 3 I have to say that when you compare it to like days gone that im currently playing it looks a bit rough on the graphics front, and holly molly days gone looks insane for a 2019 ps4 game 😅

    I think u confuse plot with story cuz u said the story is ok then proceeded to say how the story/writing is top tier.

    • @PlayerVersusGame
      @PlayerVersusGame  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You may be right. I guess the quality of the writing here was not only considerate of the main story/plot but the world it takes place in as a whole. Definitely largely in patt to the fact that the world was built for CDPR by the books. The end result is a game that has excellent writing that then results in an excellent world to playthrough at damn near every level.

      Yeah and they also did a very good job with the voice acting not as good as cyberpunk but some of the best out there.@@PlayerVersusGame
