This is my favorite way to make 4 patches. I had a quilt kit with layer cakes. The directions said to cut about half of them into charms and then sew them into 4 patches. I side stepped that plan and did them this way. They come out so straight and even. I love this quilt both ways you had it laid out. I wouldn't trim the "on point" layout. I would add setting triangles. He'll love it either way. ❤
Great idea! I also love this way of making four patches. I find it to be so effective and satisfying getting two blocks at a time. Thank you so much for watching and sharing your experience! ❤️
It is tough to deal with. I agree! I was bumming when I had to use it, but it isn’t that noticeable with all the other fabrics. It will probably still bug me. 😂
This a quick and easy quilt that could go with any layer cake. Since it’s for your son you might consider a white inner border to make the colors pop followed by a wider border in navy. Just a thought. Thanks for keeping it real. Stuff happens. Dogs want to quilt!
I want to tell you that you have become one of my favorite TH-camrs ! I love your enthusiasm and your teaching style! In love the straight 4 patch myself because of the size but i on point is nice too!
Wow! THANK YOU so much! You are so sweet! ❤❤❤ I agree with you. I actually already sewed it together that way and love it. I am going on a retreat next week and hope to quilt it while I am there. Wish more luck! Thanks again for your support and for your kind words. It means so much to me!
I like big quilts (and I cannot lie), and I love the on point setting. My suggestion is a light sand for setting and corner triangles and a navy outer border. Naughty puppy 🐶
😂 Big quilts are the best! ❤️ Oh, I LOVE this idea! YES! That would keep the soft look of it while still allowing for the blues to be the stars. Thank you for this idea! Daisy is something! Be love her, but she's a handful! 🥰
Beautiful fabric, I agree with the comment since it is for your son, I would make it bigger. If you can just get yardage I would add the setting triangle in one of the colours and put them on point. Beautiful.
I bought a layer cake with yellow prints, thinking it would look good in the house of my stepmother and father. Then they passed before I even asked if they would like a quilt. You have inspired me to ask my baby sister if she would like one with the yellows. And then I will get my quilting mojo back!
Oh no! I am so very sorry for your loss! ❤️ I am happy you are getting your quilting mojo back. Let me know if you have any questions about this one. Happy to help! ❤️
As much as I love this quilt pattern, my eye is always drawn to plaids that are cut crooked. When sizing and cutting prior to sewing the quilt, be mindful of any fabric that has a distinguished pattern like the checkerboards in the flannel pack. Thank you for offering opportunities to experiment with many patterns💖🪡🧵
LOL, my dogs do the same. Puppy tried to take a newly finished baby blanket. He has since been grounded from the sewing room:) I vote for the en point layout with the extra fabric. It really shows the pattern and fabric off, especially the light to dark effect you were going for, IMO. Thanks for the great video.
My pleasure! Awww, puppies! What are we going to do with them? I keep thinking she is finally old enough to be in there with me, but she continual proves me wrong. Hopefully someday! She's nearly 3 years old. We will see! Thank you for your vote! I did already sew it together straight, but I am considering getting some yardage and making another. I just love this one! 🥰
My son loved the flannel quilt I made him years ago and stilluses it!. But years later he gave me some advice. He said, "Mom, always make a quilt long enough to cover a guy's feet. It needs to go from the neck and down over the feet! I loved that advice - and use it for ALL quilts i make! I've used it ever since. My throw quilts are now always 48 to 60 inches wide and 70 to 80 inches long. (I love your on-point version! - cutting the points from the sides only, and using them as setting triangles as someone suggested above. And then maybe purchasing fabric for borders. Fun tutorial! Thank you
We had a golden named Daisy, too. She had a penchant for stealing shoes though. Luckily, we knew her hiding spot and were able to retrieve the missing footwear. Lol
Awww! I love this! They are so sweet that it is hard to be mad at them for too long. Daisy only steals my shoes. I think it means she loves me best (just kidding!). 😂
I think the on point setting really looks good. I would get some navy or dark taupe for setting triangles. But your choice of course. Ask the recipient which he would prefer. Making four patches that way is the best!
They look like fabulous fabrics 😍 My boys/husband are quite tall so my quilts for them are generally 74-78” long Fantastic way to make a 4 patch, I gotta remember that trick 🙋♀️🇨🇦
It’s beautiful, Kris!!! I love the peaceful colors, so pretty. And if it were me, I would buy the extra fabric and put it on point. I think with the plaids, it would look like argyle, kind of a wintery feel! But it’s going to be great no matter what you decide. Thanks for the fun tutorial, and for the pattern as well!💙
You are so welcome! So happy you love this. OHHH! Yes! It would look like argyle! Love that! I actually ended up sewing it together straight, but I am thinking about making another because I love both layouts so much. Maybe one for each of my boys. ❤️ Thank you for watching and sharing!
Thank you! Glad you like it! That's the one I am going with, but I may make another for my other son. We will see! Thank you for watching and sharing! ❤️
My pleasure! So glad you liked this! I love flannel quilts, too. You just can't help by wrapping them around you. 🥰 Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
You are so welcome! Love this idea! I actually already sewed it together with the orignial layout, but I am thinking about making another on point. Love both looks! ❤️
I have one of those puppies!!! It’s a good thing he’s pretty!!! 😂. I love your channel!!! I have a layer cake named Frankie that I didn’t know what to do with (I had to buy it since that’s my daughter’s name). I’m going to make 10” squares from a contrasting fabric and use your technique for a four patch quilt. You’re a genius!!! Why didn’t I think of that!!! Thank you for your wonderful tutorials!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I usually like the on point blocks, but I think I like the dark and light rows better in this quilt. Thanks for a neat idea for some odds and ends of flannel I’ve been trying to decide how to use.❤️❤️❤️
When I made my son's quilt I ran into the light and dark issue as well...I broke them into cools and warms instead and it worked out really well! 😊 Edit to add, I LOVE how excited you get as you put stuff together because I do the same thing 😂 especially as a new quilter, I get a little serotonin boost every time I open the block and they're lined up correctly lol
That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing! I love quilting. You are right--that serotonin boost is amazing and still present after 25+ years of quilting. I hope it continues for you, too! 🥰
I love the 4-patch regular layout and would buy some yardage to add 2 borders. Maybe a light and dark. Your son will probably find it more useful if it is bigger. This is now on my list to make soon using a layer cake! Great video!
I really appreciate your hint about the b/w photo to check the values! Brilliant! I have a cute children’s layer cake and I can’t wait to try one of your patterns! ❤
Hi Kris, My favorite way to make 4 patches! Layout idea- set blocks on point. What if you cut only the side blocks in half then take those cut offs and use them as the setting triangles to fill in the top and bottom edges. Less waste and longer quilt (I like my feet covered). Based on your picture there would be vertical dark "stripes" and dark edges at the top & bottom.
I recently made a quilt using Primitive Gatherings flannel. It was fabulous to work with (fat eighths). Used 1/4" seam with no problems. Your quilt will be great. Thanks for the video 😊 CORRECTION: Quilt washed in cold/dried on low. Had multiple seams that frayed open 😢. I would definitely use a bigger seam allowance (>1/4") in the future even with this high quality flannel. Good thing I'm keeping this quilt.....my repairs leave a lot to be desired. I still love the quilt 😊
My pleasure! That is so good to know! I was nervous about it because of other experiences I have had with flannel. It did seem pretty stable, however. Thank you for watching and for letting me know. I am sure this will help others interested in using this pattern. ❤️
Love a simple 4 patch. Leave as is and add borders. Its awesome!! I have a crazy dog too! He’s almost 2 yrs old and hes so strange!! He chews the weirdest things. Like the back of my love seat for one?! Those dog toys made from fire hoses are no match for him lol I just don’t understand him. He is a border collie/healer mix. Has tons of room to run and 2 playmates. Macy is adorable. Love goldens!!
She is the same way! Wow, the loveseat? YIKES! Daisy tore up our comforter and shams on our bed when she was really young, but that's the most destructive she has been with one idea, at least. I am glad I didn't have a quilt on that bed! 😂 We also can't find toys for her. Not only does she tear them apart, but she also EATS them! I can't tell you how many times we have been to the vet because of possible blockages. So far, she has passed everything, but still. As a small pup, she would eat rocks. Oh boy. That was not fun! Thank you so much for watching and commiserating. 😂 Gotta love these pups!
@@SewtheDistance oops Daisy!! Well Daisy is adorable!!! My first dog was a golden. She lived to be 17. Best dog I ever had!! Was fantastic with my kids!
I hope she lives that long. She's a sweetie deep down, I think. 😂 She has a ton of allergies, however, so that is rough. And unfortunately, not kids here. She is stuck with two empty nesters. 😂 Oh well. Maybe someday there will be grand babies for her play with.
I like the on point version better, so I would purchase white fabric to make the triangle points to finish it. That way, you don't need to cut off any of your blocks. Then I'd add a navy border to add to the size. Good luck. 😊
Tip from an old sewist: place your pins perpendicular to your sewing path with the heads of the pins extending out past your patches. Your pins will distort your work less, and it’s easy to pull out your pins as you stitch.
Thanks so much for the tip! I have tried it this way and don’t like it as much. I’ve been sewing a long time, too (nearly 30 years now), and this way works much better for me. But that’s what’s so wonderful! We can all be successful with many different techniques. Thank you so much for sharing. ❤️ I appreciate your suggestion!
It was great seeing a new (to me) method for making four-patches. I predict that I will be making blocks this way soon. I rarely buy plaids or other fabrics with obvious lines in the print because crooked lines drive me crazy. I prefer my four- and nine-patches placed as you have them and not on point.
Love this! My thought is buy the extra and put on Point. It is for your son so worth it! Still working on Christmas charm square table runner, loving it
Hi Kris. I love that layer cake you found. I've never worked with flannel-yet! I don't see that you need to add anything else to the top, it has an "old time look" to it as though it were a reproduction quilt. No puppies here, but 2 feline fur babies that love to curl up in clean fabric! Thank you for the tutorial and the pattern. ~~ Lynne
You are so welcome! Glad you love it! You are right! I hadn't noticed that until you said something. So true! It does look old-time-y! Is that word? 😂 Our cat past a few years ago, but in his prime, he would do the same thing! Gotta love these fur babies. ❤️❤️❤️
Either layout is fine. Go bigger. If you decide to do on point, use setting triangles instead of cutting off squares. If you go bigger with your current layout, more blocks instead of border would be amazing. It is lovely in its simplicity and the colors look good together.
Crazy golden chewers! Gotta love them! 😂 It is pretty on point, isn't it? I decided to go with the straight setting, however, but am considering making another one and putting it on point. It was so hard to decide! 🥰 Thank you for watching! ❤️
Fabrics that have been cut badly really upset me when I put them in my quilt 😳 And it would bother me forever 😳😳 I think that’s why I don’t buy pre-cuts - if anyone from those firms are reading this. Love your quilt 🥰 It’s going to be so snuggly 🤩 Thanks so much for sharing 👏👏🇬🇧
My pleasure! So true! i am not a huge fan of precuts either for that very reason, but they are super convenient, so that is nice. I completely understand what you are saying, however. It can be so frustrating.
Love this one! Yesterday, I finished a quilt top using the Just One Layer Cake pattern from your prior video. Batting is arriving today. Once it's finished, I'll tag you on Instagram. Love your videos! And I love watching your subscriber numbers climb since I found your videos about six weeks ago.
Thank you so much! I can''t wait to see it! I can't tell how thrilled I am that you are making these patterns. When you make videos like this, you never know who makes things. Thank you for sharing! Thank you so much for supporting my channel. More videos to come! ❤️
On point four patch buy the extra fabric perhaps navy flannel. It’ll make all other blocks pop. But that’s your choice. I do think that since you spent the extra money on these 10x10 in the long run setting on point will be visually appealing. Just my own humble opinion. You asked. Have fun whatever you decide ❤
Thank you so much! I love hearing ideas. I appreciate all the input from everyone! LOVE the idea of the navy setting it off. You are so right! Thanks again for watching and sharing. ❤️
I would go with your layout and add borders. I love borders! An adult could use the extra width and length of additional borders. Pricier? Yes. But the finished product will be so special to him😊
I love your quilt and I actually have that layer cake. I'm going to make this; however, I'm going to match 2 different halves together after the first cut / before the 2nd, so that each block has 4 *different fabrics (not 2 of the same 2). It will look more scrappy (which I really like :) because none of the same fabrics will touch.

Add a border to it ! I'm sure he will appreciate it 😊
@@joannrogers-mp6gp it worked for me !
Thank you! Do you have a video with instructions for adding borders to it?

That was exacly my thought as well. You also can make it a little bigger with the set in triangles. But it looks nice and cozy in both directions.
Great idea! I also love this way of making four patches. I find it to be so effective and satisfying getting two blocks at a time. Thank you so much for watching and sharing your experience! ❤️
So true! It would work beautifully! ❤️
I like the squared layout better than the on point. Great guy quilt!
Thank you! Definitely great for a guy. ❤️
That crooked plaid was making me crazy!😂
It is tough to deal with. I agree! I was bumming when I had to use it, but it isn’t that noticeable with all the other fabrics. It will probably still bug me. 😂
I like the on point lay out a lot
It looks nice, doesn't it? ❤️
Love your dog. ❤
Thank you! She's a sweetie. Mostly. 😀
I’m going to make one for my son-in-law - I’ll add extra borders since he is so tall. I love it! 😊
Yay! I love that you are making it and that you love it! Thank you so much for watching! ❤️❤️❤️
My vote is on point with extra fabric. Cute Quilt!
Thank you! 🥰
Very easy on the eyes with present layout! Beautiful!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you like it.
Thank you for this pattern! I will definitely use this !
Yay! Happy to hear! You are so welcome! ❤️
On point with extra fabric😊 nice
Thank you! 😊 I need to do that!
High quality flannel, more stable and less stretchy!
Just learning this! It was nice to work with, for sure!
Oh no! Puppies can be a handful. Great colors.
So true! Love the colors, too! Thanks for watching! ❤️
Cute puppy 💕. I love the simple setting, but the on-point setting really takes it up town !
Thank you!! 😊 I totally agree! It comes to life on point.
This a quick and easy quilt that could go with any layer cake.
Since it’s for your son you might consider a white inner border to make the colors pop followed by a wider border in navy. Just a thought.

Hello from Qaqortoq Greenland. I enjoyed the video and I like four patch blocks too. :) :) :)
Hello there! Wow! All the way from Greenland! That is so cool! Thank you so much for watching! ❤️
Your quilt will look great either straight or on point. I vote for on point.
Thank you! I like it on point, too! ❤️
Love the quilt both ways, my favourite is on point although I would purchase additional fabric for the corner stones.
That’s a great idea! Thank you!
For your son I’d make it bigger with boarders. It will be cozier and fit him better as he grows. I love the quilt, very nice. ❤😊
Such a great point! Thank you for this! I think I might. ❤️
Great video for a quilt working with flannels - thanks! I like the larger quilt; generous size for a throw. ❤
You are so welcome! Great point! I do need to make it bigger. It will be used more that way, I think. Thank you for the suggestion! ❤️
Since it’s for your son I would add extra borders to make it bigger.
Good idea! Thanks for the suggestion!
I loved the way you have it. Save some money. He will live it the way it is it's beautiful ❤️
Thank you so much! ❤️ Good idea!
Yes, I would add some borders. Bigger to allow for growth of your son!! I always want mine a bit bigger!
True! Thanks for the tip! Although he is 31 years old, so I don’t think he will get much bigger. 🥰 Thank you so much for watching!

Thank you! Love this idea!
Leave it - looks beautiful!!!!
Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
She has a ton of allergies, however, so that is rough. And unfortunately, not kids here. She is stuck with two empty nesters. 😂 Oh well. Maybe someday there will be grand babies for her play with.
Love my yorkie. He got a jelly roll tore the plastic and shredded the side. He better be glad I love him to pieces.
Ohhhh noooo! Wow, that's terrible! I get it. I feel the same about Daisy! 😂
I like the on point version better, so I would purchase white fabric to make the triangle points to finish it. That way, you don't need to cut off any of your blocks. Then I'd add a navy border to add to the size. Good luck. 😊
Great idea! Thank you! That would be perfect! 🥰
It is beautiful! just bought the same layer cake. Thank you for the idea.
You are so welcome! ❤️
It was great seeing a new (to me) method for making four-patches. I predict that I will be making blocks this way soon. I rarely buy plaids or other fabrics with obvious lines in the print because crooked lines drive me crazy. I prefer my four- and nine-patches placed as you have them and not on point.
Yay! This method is fun. I am happy you are going to try it! I completely understand what you mean. Thanks so much for watching and sharing! 🥰
I love the original layout looks very nice the colors I like as well. I will be trying this one, thanks for sharing…..🦋🦋🦋
You are so welcome! I love that you are going to make this one! It is fun. Let me know if you have any questions! Happy to help. ❤️
Love this! My thought is buy the extra and put on
Point. It is for your son so worth it! Still working on Christmas charm square table runner, loving it
Yay! So glad you love this!
Great point--it is worth it! Thank you!
So excited that you are making the runner! ❤️❤️❤️
That fabric is gorgeous!!
I just love it, too!
Love it just as is!
Thank you so much! ❤️
I like it the way you have it laid out.
Thank you! ❤️ I think that’s what I am going with.
Thanks so much for the pattern! I will definitely use up a layer cake and try it!! Yours is a beauty!
You are so welcome! So happy you like this!
Thank you so much! ❤️
I like the idea of on point and add the extra fabric, it looked beautiful in your drawing ❤️
Thank you! 😊 Love this idea of adding fabric. ❤️
Our cat past a few years ago, but in his prime, he would do the same thing!
Thanks so much! Wonderful ideas! ❤️
Love this!! 💙💙
Thank you!
I have a crazy golden chewer,too!!
I love the on point layout best. I cant wait to hear what you decide!
Crazy golden chewers! Gotta love them! 😂
It is pretty on point, isn't it? I decided to go with the straight setting, however, but am considering making another one and putting it on point. It was so hard to decide! 🥰
Thank you for watching!
Pricier? Yes. But the finished product will be so special to him😊
So true! Thank you! I need to do this! ❤️
Love this idea! Thank you for sharing! It will be great, I am sure! 🥰
Love the colours😊
Aren't they great? Love them too. ❤️
