    Love Renaissance. Much underrated.

    A great group who deserved more success than they had. Most will only be familiar with them for the single Northern Lights which was their only hit single. This album A Song For All Seasons was their biggest selling album off the back of it. Most of the other albums never charted in the UK, although now considered classic prog albums.

    IMO, the best way to totally enjoy Day Of The Dreamer is listening Opening Out with it. Love your reaction.

      Opening Out is great! That would have been good in retrospect to pair them together!

      Agreed! To me Lyrically these two songs blend into each other pretty seamlessly. My other favorite Is Touching Once is Hard To Keep from the Novella album

    A band that I've sadly missed over the years. I need to rectify that omission. Proper symphonic prog!

    This is one of their masterpiece! Of course The Song of Sheherazade - the longest one - is the greatest! But This I think is the second nearly as Good! So fine and so many tricky lovely small sounding in tunes! Smoothies your Ears! 🥰👍

    Jana's reaction is great. Renaissance's songs DO often resemble musical theater. To their credit the band never capitalized on that like they could have (e.g. Trans-Siberia Orchestra.) My fave albums are Novella and Azure d'Or, which runs counter to the majority of prog fans. But all of the 70s output is uniformly good, IMO.

      I love Novella and Azure d'Or as well, their 70s albums are truly all classics!

    You should check out The Daily Doug TH-cam channel. He did an awesome interview with Annie Haslam just recently.

    Another great female fronted progband is Earth and Fire with lead singer Jerney Kaagman. Their Symphonic prog albums The Song of the Marching Children (1971) and Atlantis (1973) are highly recommended.

    Keep doing more Rensissance. Try Mother Russia. It's about Alexander Solzhenitsen. Incredible song. They are amazing.

    So ... she's heard BoRhap ... has she heard the other masterpiece on that album? The Prophet's Song? I think it's a least the equal, if not better. Also, the in the Renaissance vein ... Song of Scheherazade. She's listened to Supper's Ready, I think she'd love Scheherazade ... not as wacky!

    • @mikehale6235
      @mikehale6235 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At some point Scheherazade is a must listen. It is very much in the style of a musical in three acts.

    • @chadbennett7873
      @chadbennett7873 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikehale6235 Totally agree. Based on Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, it tells the story known as 1001 Nights. Much of Renaissance's music is based on classical masterpieces. I once saw a list of the classical influences on their songs, and I'd love to find it again. Renaissance is a band that was almost always in flux, except for a few years when they created their best work. Not many people know it began out of the Yardbirds split, with Keith Relf and Jim McCarty. Jane Relf, the sister, was the original singer. Michael Dunsford was eventually brought in as guitarist and composer, and he eventually kept the name and organized the band's lineup. Jane and other members changed to Illusion for a couple of albums. Annie is really the only one left playing this music, and she, as expected, is doing it well. I had the pleasure of meeting her once after a concert in Long Beach, CA. She signed a program for me, and like a total fool, I missed getting Michael's signature.

      @@chadbennett7873 I had read somewhere that in 1990's, Michael Dunsford tried to stage a musical based on the Scheherazade story with some of the music coming from the song he wrote in Renaissance.

      @@mikehale6235 It is seriously one of the most magnificent musical pieces ever. The fact that five of them could play it on stage without an orchestra is beyond belief. John Tout was a musical genius, so were they all.

    • @chadbennett7873
      @chadbennett7873 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertdendooven7258 I would have paid dearly to see that. Rimsky-Korsaokov is my favorite classical composer, and his Scheherazade is by far my favorite classical composition. Renaissance captured the spirit and heart of that story.

    Annie Haslam the only singer that can compare with the greatest of them all Sandy Denny.

    Jana, Jana, Jana...
    I truly hope when y'all shuffle in to Yes' Wondrous Stories/Awaken you don't allow length to color your listen. Yes, the two are *long*, but so, so worth it.
