What people continue to fail to think about is these are the bands drummers.... they DO NOT make the entire album. Mike Portnoy cannot be solely blamed for the direction of this latest effort if you don't like it and Mike Mangini cannot be solely blamed for the last 5. Did both drummers add their twist on the drum parts and make recommendations to songs? YES. Did they craft the WHOLE ALBUM into a thing that YOU cannot stand? NO!!!! Understand this, repeat this to yourself daily and move the fuck on if you don't like either of the drummers OR the material THIS BAND releases. YES, BAND. Jordan, James, John and John have a mind of their own and contribute MASSIVELY to all of their efforts..

I haven't seen a lot of concerts, but I have seen some amazing shows. I've recently seen Steve Hackett three times, which was a great taste of what a Genesis show would have been in the 70s. I also saw the Musical Box perform The Lamb. While they don't have the dynamics of the classic Genesis lineup, the experience was fantastic. I saw Jon Anderson with Yes, ARW, and with Jean Luc Ponty, but perhaps the best was with the Band Geeks. That setlist was unbelievably epic. I've seen Yes in a small venue with Squire, White, and Howe. I saw Peter Gabriel in 1986 and Genesis from the front row in 1980. I'm satisfied with all that. It would be cool to see Anderson and Howe together again, and the classic Genesis lineup in some combination or other. I also would like to see Glass Hammer live. None of these is likely, but that’s ok. I've been blessed.

There is a lot in this new album that I've never heard from DT. It's been a while where I'll listen to a specific section over and over again in a DT song... And man the final 10 minutes of the last song are crazy. Yet they sound like the Dream Theater we know and love. I'm happy. So now my tier list is SFAM, I&W, Awake, 8V, SDOIT, TOT, Parasomnia, SC, BCASL, FII, WDADU, all the mangini albums tiered equally, with the astonishing in a distant last place.

I can tell you are more partial to MP. I have to disagree about the Mike Mangini era though, those five albums are some of the strongest in the DT catalog. Thanks for the review on the new album, can't wait to hear it.

    • @NathanOnShuffle

It's great to see some Mangini love in the comments! It's true, I am a big MP fan, not just in Dream Theater, but all of his various side projects. Maybe it didn't come across well in the review, but I do really love the Mangini albums. The only DT album that I struggled with initially was The Astonishing, but it grew on me once I understood what they were going for on that album. Otherwise, I really love all of those albums just like the rest of DT's catalog. Maybe my bias to MP (a lot due to his work with my favorite artist, Neal Morse) makes me favor his albums slightly more, but they are all great, and I think it all just comes down to personal taste.

@@NathanOnShuffle I mean i'd trade many of them for one Cruise to the Edge--but I definitely go out of my way to try and make the most of it. Tony Levin went to school in Rochester so we often will get at least one show by one of his projects every year (Stick Men, BEAT, The Levin Brothers, King Crimson a couple times) and the shows are often small enough where he takes the time to meet and talk with fans and sign autographs/take pictures. Incredibly nice guy

Glad to see Tull here. I LOVE Minstrel. A nice big epic in "Baker St. Muse," fun folksy stuff on "Cold Wind to Valhalla" and then the really personal stuff that Ian rarely does, peaking with him turning his rather judgemental gaze on himself with "One White Duck," which hits right in the gut. Wild that by 1975, Crimson was already done, Yes, ELP, and Genesis all took a break from releasing albums. Middle of the 70's, and the biggest boys in Prog were sleeping or dead. Absolutely love the placement of _Free Hand_ which is my personal favorite Gentle Giant album. Though I'm not a huge fan of the production on the album, any live version of the title track or "On Reflection" just sends me catatonic. Amazing record.

I did not have much expectations from this new album. Normally their songs get better to the ear over time but I cannot listen broken man and midnight messiah any more. Night terror is decently good though. For me distance over time was the best album after dramatic turn of events. There are songs that are really good from their self title album and astonishing. But last album was horrible and this one seems to be in same line. I am disappointed.

Hi Nathan. Dave here. Really appreciated your considered, balanced review. I had drifted away from the band, as I thought their music had become bloated and featureless (with the exception of The Astonishing which I liked in parts). Maybe it had something to do with Mike Portnoy leaving, so I'm eager to hear more of this one, and from your excellent review, it sounds like it is more structured and memorable, like their earlier albums.
