well done, Nathan... I was nodding quite a bit during this video: Yes 'Tales' I adore... Genesis - my no 1 progrock band: 'ATTWT' - solid album - I was surprised how well they took the big loss of Steve... etc... I don't know if Mike Oldfield is on your screen too, but I always like to defend his 2nd album 'Hergest Ridge' - personally I even like it more than 'Tubular Bells', because of its dark, mystic & celtic atmosphere... rule of thumb to me: if you don't like an album of a fav band, just go back to it later with a fresh mind & attitude - it often lands much better, once we release our expectations of 'what it should sound like' 😎
My pick is Arena's 'The Visitor,' from 2000. Yes it *is* highly regarded among diehard progheads, but still doesn't get NEARLY the credit it deserves. It's brilliant, start to finish.
Very cool video! I completely agree with "Tales." While I like a few other Yes albums better, I still consider this one of their classic albums, and I've listened to it countless times over the years. I love that I can enjoy it as kind of background music, but I can enjoy it even more by putting on headphones and giving it my complete attention. I would add ELP's "Works Vol.1." I think all three solo sides have some great tracks, even if their overall consistency may not be the best. And the group side contains two absolute classic ELP epics.
I agree 100% with Tormato and And Then There Were Three! My only complaint about ATTWT is that it sounds a bit too much like Wind & Wuthering at times. I think Rush's Counterparts is one of their more underrated albums. What about a "most forgotten prog rock albums" video?
The voice of reason. Thank you Nathan. The best thing about prog is its freedom to explore. No style is off the table. That is how you discover new things that never would have surfaced otherwise. An open mind grows and progresses. That is why it is called progressive music, I think.
Dude!! I've watched 3 of your videos and each of them have been right in line with how I feel. Your Fym review is great, your gentle giant reaction to my favourite release of theirs and now this one. I've been blasting Day For Night a lot, 100% underrated album from SB. My Shoes is an earworm in that epic at the end. The Incident by PT is also definitely underrated, some amazing songs on there that I think will hold up as classics, such as Time Flies and Drive the Hearse Great taste in music, I'll be following along with your channel from now on
@@NathanOnShuffle Glad to be along for the ride! Check out VOLA if you haven't already, though that leans more into prog metal as opposed to rock. A lot of what I like is the same sort of thing, I haven't long been into more mellow stuff so my catalogue on that side is not too big. I've also been listening to the recent Chinese prog band OU - it was a nice find for me as I speak Chinese and it's hard to find music from China that fits my tastes
@@babytiny5807 VOLA has definitely been on my list to check out- I’ve heard a few song and liked them but need to dig in deeper! I thought OU was very interesting- not my typical thing but I definitely have a lot of respect for them having such a unique sound!
Hi Nathan. Dave here. I love Yes' Tales but prefer CTTE and Relayer, so I think it is rated about right. For me the most underrated Yes album is Talk. I agree with you about DT's Falling Into Infinity but, at the risk of annoying people, I think their most underrated album is The Astonishing - forget the concept, there are some great songs and playing in there.
Great selection and pretty agree with your list. Maybe except Tull. I really don't like that album. But i could put Somewhere Else by marillion and maybe Paradox Hotel by The Flower Kings too. And of course the most underrated album in the history IMO is The Final Cut...
Excellent. I agree with many of your choices. To stick with the 70's, I would add Breakfast in America. It's a hugely popular album but does not get very much respect among prog fans. A masterpiece and one of the defining albums of the late 70's.
I agree with a lot of your choices. Yes-Tales, I could just never get into, but Tormato gets undeserved hate. That album is great. Genesis-and Then There Were Three isn't as bad as many claim. It is a falloff without Steve Hackett, but it is better than everything that came after it. Spocks Beard-Day for Night is a really good album that doesn't deserve to be slammed. Good picks overall!
I don't pay much attention to ratings as I like what I like! I definitely agree with Poseidon and Day for Night. Pictures of a City is one of my favorite KC tracks. Day for Night underrated? Criminal.😊 Thanks for your attention to an underrated genre.
Music is subjective, it's like the Genesis, Ray Wilson era, a lot of the old fans hated it, I loved it and I was an old fan, same as Marillion and the Fish and Hogarth eras, I adore Fish but I love Hogarth as well :)

I like Love Beach by ELP and I don't understand all the bashing about this album. People just look at the artwork and don't care to allow it an objective listen, especially side 2.
I'm loving anti-clickbait week so far! Hard agree on most of your picks. Especially Gentle Giant - how anyone could love Free Hand or TPatG and not rate Interview similarly high is quite beyond me! Looking beyond the big names of prog I think there are plenty of albums that are underrated in the sense that they really stand shoulder to shoulder with the best of the giants, but rarely get their due because they came from comparatively obscure artists. A few examples: Maxophone - S/t Bubu - Anabelas Cardiacs - A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window Los Jaivas - Alturas de Machu Picchu Il Balletto Di Bronzo - Ys Discipline - Unfolded Like Staircase Triumvirat - Illusions on a Double Dimple National Health - Of Queues and Cures I could go on and on but I'll stop there! A couple of these albums sometimes hover around the lower end of the Prog Archives top 100, but IMO they're all stone cold classics that ought to be on the radar of any serious prog fan. Harmonium's "Si on avait besoin d'une cinquième saison" used to suffer a similar fate, but thankfully that album seems to be finally getting its due - #28 on the PA top 100 at time of writing.
@@NathanOnShuffle You won't regret it! Can't guarantee you'll love them, but I think they all inarguably succeed on their own terms. I try not to bandy the term "masterpiece" around too much, but they all fall into that category for me
This one was almost on my list! I actually only didn't include it because I need to listen to it more before I feel ready to give my thoughts on it...but I'm planning a Kansas month in the not too distant future and may be doing a big album ranking of their whole discography...
I rank Tales as their 6th best album. I absolutely adore the album, but also totally understand all the criticisms it gets, even from Rick Wakeman. Tormato ranks about 12th for me. It's a very good album, but it's a clear step down from their previous records, but I enjoy everything on it; even Circus of Heaven. I gotta agree with you about Love Beach too. Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman is a great track, that I had never heard until recently, after I took the time to listen to the album. I was quite shocked that it was 20 minutes in length, and also shocked that I had never heard of it. Don't think I've ever listened to the Jethro Tull album. Maybe I should take the time to listen to it. I've never heard 'And Then There Were Three'. Never heard 'of it' either. King Crimson. Now this band I've pretty well versed in, so much so that I just made a video where I rank their albums, and also state my Top Ten songs by them. Hope you check it out. Interesting that the first 2 pieces you mentioned from the album were Pictures of a City, and Cat Food. I like Caress of Steel. It's a very good album. The only music I know from Gentle Giant are from reactors who've reacted to their music. I find their music to be very "interesting". I'll just leave it at that. Same with Dream Theater, and I have very little knowledge of Porcupine Tree, as well as Spock's Beard, and Neal Morse, but are you aware of the Prog Rock Band U.K., who only put out 2 albums, followed by a live album? Talk about an underrated group, U.K. is not well known, but I rank their first album in my Top 5 Prog Rock albums of all time. Every fan of YES and King Crimson should know who U.K. is, so I'm going to guess that you know them, but if you don't... you're missing out big time. Here's the lineup, though half the band left after the first album, sadly: Eddie Jobson: Keyboards John Wetton: Bass and Vocals Allan Holdsworth: Guitar Bill Bruford: Percussion Their second album is very good, and you should absolutely check it out, along with their live album. I recommend the extended cut version on TH-cam. They even have a 30 year reunion tour, which sounds weird, I know, but it's a very good concert. I believe it was one of the last performances by John Wetton, before he passed away.
@@NathanOnShuffle any chance I can get you to check out my King Crimson video, where I rank their albums, and also my Top Ten songs by them? Thought you'd enjoy it.
