They are in a league of there own, Brilliant lyrical writer ( betty Thatcher) and musicians that masterfully translates words to music. My favorite band of All Time.
You have no idea what you're on the edge of with this group. Annie Haslem IS top-of-the-top: a voice like an angel...and you haven't even heard it yet. Their album 'Ashes Are Burning" is beautiful, and the title song is their magnum opus. And "Scheherazade" (the name of the woman from 1001 Arabian Nights) is a concept album that is amazing. Side one is the story of Scheherazade, and there is some unimaginable beauty in it. Side Two is three or four other songs...which are excellent, too. TRY IT!
I think early seventies the book The Gulag Archipelago by Solzjenitsyn was very popular in West-Europe, it was translated to many languages. His fame was the result of him being awarded the Nobel prize for Literature in 1970 for earlier work, so many people were aware of his problems being a dissident in the Sovjet-Union.
Brilliant prog rock group. Lead singer Annie Haslem is one of the best singers ever. Love this group. Yes Gulag Archipelego one of the great books of the last century. Solzhenitsyn won a Nobel prize for literature.
Originally they were a more folk inspired band but pretty early classical influences crept and there are at least a few songs in which they almost completely lift themes / melodies from classical pieces. What you are missing here is the fact that on a lot of their best songs they used a full orchestra which was a bit hard to replicate with just the band. Oh, and they didn’t have an electric guitarplayer, Michael Dunford only played acoustic guitar. He also wrote all the music.
Chances are it's not the same concert, but I did see Renaissance in Toronto around that time.....and it was magical! Annie's voice blew me away. I love the fact that you 2 will delve into music that's less mainstream, which gives me the courage to recommend an incredible French Canadian band from the 70's. CANO - acronym for Cooperative des Artistes du Nouvel Ontario - were one of my favourite bands back then as they were so different from the popular music at the time. If you'd like to hear a little something from CANO I'd suggest: "Chez Zeebe" (danse de la survivance) off the album "au nord du notre vie" Thank you for your wonderful channel & cheers from Canada!
Great band! They were, like a lot of progressive acts, born out of mainstream pop acts, in this case The Yardbirds. Another band that completely reinvented itself from pop beginnings were Simon Dupree and The Big Sound, featuring the three Shulman brothers, who hated their big hit, 'Kites' and went off to form Gentle Giant instead.
A little surprised that both of you had never heard of Solzhenitsyn considering you are from former Eastern Bloc countries. I remember reading "A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" as a teenager. It was very moving and this song supposedly is in reference to that work.
I never found a Renaissance track I did not like! Their first album (sung by the wonderful Jane Relf) was one of the first I bought on vinyl. Mother Russia is about the music as much as the voice ... the two in harmony to create the feeling. ================ If you want a really emotional song to react to (always brings a tear to my eye) about one boy's journey through World War One ... a long, almost "symphonic" track, with beautiful instrumentation, and a truly evocative narrative. Sequences (Revisited 2018) by Twelfth Night. th-cam.com/video/RJv2xkFSzwA/w-d-xo.html
Met singer Annie Haslam at a Prog Convention 3 years ago. A lovely person to talk to. Was one of the best progressive bands to watch ever.
Absolutely Beautiful !!

The group had great hit called Northern Lights back in the 70’s. Annie Haslam has a beautiful voice!
I think you would like the studio version better. Full orchestra and clear sound. Incredible score. The horns added a lot.
Finally somebody reacting to Renaissance and i arrived late.

One of the best bands ever.
OMG! I love this group! It’s been so long since I heard them. Thanks
Great to see such a variety from you 2.... Great music.... Life is Deep. Isn't it.....?

Fantastic band, top notch in the seventies, they were much more folk than prog though. You won't go wrong listening to any of their music.

Renaissance is amazing
You should listen to "Ashes are burning"
un super groupe de rock prog

Like. Greetings from Mexico. Annie Haslam big voice of prog rock

This song should be a James Bond movie soundtrack
You should listen to them live from Carnegie Hall full orchestra.
All types of Progressive Rock. This unique GREAT band is more influenced by Classical & Oparetic forms than the Rock guitar heavy groups.

Pink Floyd is Prog Rock and is the most popular band here! jajajaja
