So glad I found this video. Had my Birkin for 3 years now and it just opened a half-reverting leaf. I turned to the internet thinking my plant was dying or something. Very informative video thank you.
My Birkin has "normal" and half/half leaves. I love that this plant is so unpredictable and every new leave is a surprise. As long as the plant is healthy i really don't mind a full reversion, but i hope the growth pattern right now will stay for a very long time.
Excellent, it's so cool right. Kind of rockn'roll vibes. It's awesome to know a fellow reversion lover. I think it will take a while to fully change though so the growth pattern should be interesting for a good while yet.
I have a Birkin story, and perhaps a plant-not sure yet. This summer I was plant-sitting for a friend. She had dropped off a bunch of plants, all in their original small plastic pots. I had them all on the floor in front of a sliding glass door for light. I have a golden retriever who doesn’t usually touch my plants, so I didn’t even think to keep it out of her reach. Then another friend dropped off his golden retriever while he was out of town for a couple of days, and the two dogs together went a little crazy with their play. I had them inside the house on a day when the outside temps reached well over 40ºC, so I didn’t have the option of just putting them in the back garden. At one point they both were running from one end of the house to the other and I had to calm them down for a time-out. I noticed there was dirt on the floor and thought that one of them had brought something in from the garden, then remembered that they had not been outside-I looked more closely and saw one of the pots I was supposed to be caring for, empty on my couch! I stopped and thought, oh god, I hope that wasn’t my friends Birkin, which of course it was. The first thing I worried about was whether or not the plant was toxic for dogs, which of course it is. Luckily neither dog got sick, but I was a wreck for a few hours thinking I had killed either my or my friend’s dog. Then I wondered about the plant…had my friend paid a fortune for it that I was now going to be on the hook for? Luckily, she had not. Then about a month later I was looking for an empty pot and came across the pot that the dogs had gotten. I had scraped up some of the dirt and put it back in the pot, but It looked as if the plant was completely gone so I put it outside and forgot all about it; but now I saw one small whitish leaf emerging from the dirt and was thrilled that it had survived not only the dog attack but also being neglected for a month or so without being watered. But it had a really hard time getting going, and it was another couple of months until any more leaves emerged. Now there are a few small leaves, but they have lost the variegation and seem to be just green with a tiny hint of red in the stem only. My guess is that it is just taking its time to re-establish itself. Once it does, I’m hoping it will speed up a bit, perhaps even offering some Birkin leaves at one point or another. I also wonder about where the name came from. Anything to do with Jane, or the purse? Seems like there should be a story in there somewhere … or someone should make one up! Great video-thanks for sharing your knowledge !
I love my birken and it’s starting to revert back with some read streaks-but ai think it makes it even more interesting! I appreciate your backstory on them.
Thank you for this, lots of great information! I'm relatively new to plants and I picked up a Birkin just recently at a big box store because it looked cool. I had no idea there was any controversy around it 🙂
Oooh a birkin is a great one for the start of your plant journey. Good choice. There's a lot that's going on there to continuously surprise. Thanks for watching and have a great day 🙂
I got my Birkin about 6 weeks ago and it is reverting. I have a new leaf growing out with a red tip , so here we go! This is my first one, so I am watching it closely every day. I will say that when I purchased it it had an odd shape round leaf at the base of the plant. I thought it was just a deformity of a leaf, but upon further inspection I think because it is on the side where the red leaf is emerging, that maybe the leaf was an indicator of what was to come. I purchased this divine plant solely on its uniqueness with no name attached. I am very pleased with the hardiness and the growth and its beauty. I love this plant! I am going to see how it evolves. I will purchase more in the future, regardless of its metamorphic capability.
I got my plant at Lowes on a clearance rack for $7. It was heavily over watered, so i took it home and took it out of the soaked soil and took off a couple damaged leaves and its thriving beautifully. Thank u for your information on its care!
I have a P. Birkin. It has not reverted and grows crazy mad. I had some leaf blight run through my plant collection back in July 23 and the Birkin was the first I noticed with the blight. Although I had to chop all infected leaves (as I did with all of my Philos) the Birkin bounced back super fast. Much faster than my Rojo Congo, Green Princess or any others. Great plant! I have been seeing them in big box stores as half/half reverted and they sell so I am not sure what the fuss is. I purchased a Pink Princess from a local green house and it reverted quickly. So now it's just a Burgundy Princess... Still beautiful! **Note: Never mist your plants no matter what anyone tells you! That is how the leaf blight started and it spread quickly through my Philodendron collection!
I have exactly one like your second plant. I love it so much! I am so glad I found your video. Now I know the story. I always wondered why my Birkin look like it does. Thank you!
the story of the Philodendron birkin including a true life reverting story, plant care and an overview of the controversy that has surrounded this plant.
I just bought mine at my local Kroger grocery store for $14.99 including a really nice ceramic pot (there’s a smaller nursery pot inside it.) I had no idea they were once expensive. I love it. It’s got half green leaves with white stripes and part white with green.
I love my $12 birken. It’s an easy plant that surprises me with each new leaf. Even it reverts because….$12. It’s happy, I love all plants so I’m happy.
Am I crazy for wanting rojo Congo leaves on my Birkin plant?? My first one had a mix of leaves including rojo Congo, it died. I just got another one, it took me long time to buy it because I wanted it with a bit of reverting 🤔.
i have a birkin , absolutely luv it , i have a green princess ,silver sword , neon green one that i cant remember the name of , squamiferum honestly , i very enjoy all of them
This was the informative video I needed-- I had a birkin that moved with me through several states that stressed her severely to the point of reversion. I’ve moved to a more long term space and she just started showing a new leaf growth but I don’t know, if it’s going to be a Congo red or birkin leaf. I’ll still love her either way but the gamble is strong and exciting
Thank you for a very informative video. 😊 I have a birkin baby, and was really curious about what was going on with it. Had heard a few of the murmurs of people having opinions about it, and just wanted to know more abt that, and the plant lineage in general. Apparently, the unhappiness has reached the producers as well, because mine only cost a few quid in a supermarket, and nowhere on it does it say it is a birkin. It is marketed as a Philodendron White Vein. 😂 I got it last fall, and it has been doing quite well. The last leaf it put out however, has the most gorgeous dark purply-red hue on one side. It is sort of blotchy like the pattern on a Ficus Elastica Tineke, and i hope the next few leaves do the same. It covers about a third, and the rest of the leaf is nearly completely white. That's what lead me here, as i want to propagate the new part of the plant, but i am unsure of how to. I am quite tough on my plants usually, and have the opinion, that if a plant dies from me, it just wasnt the right one for my home. I'm just a bit fussy with this one though. I really don't want to hurt the original plant, nor destroy the beautiful new vairegation. 😬 I have adhd, so delicate plants that need very specific and uniform care, usually stand no chance. Im fine with it for the most part though. Philodendrons tend to do well with the kind of mistreatment i give them, and Monstera downright loves it. My birkin however, i want to be sure about before i do anything drastic.
Thnk you this was really helpful for me. I'm brand new to plants and just picked up one ysday at my local grocery store. However there was no tag so I had no idea what it was but it was so beautiful i had to have it. It has one leaf which is half green, and the other half Is the white and green strippy look, which cought my eye. It's absolutely stunning,!!! as all the leaves seem to be so different. Some have more green than white some more white than green. And some all green. Has those burgendy-ish veins up the stems which I love. Took all day to figure out what it was called , whenever I googled it just said Chinese evergreen. I snagged mine for 17.99 CAN , not sure if thats a good price or not but I'm happy with it. Had no idea they can "revert" and change colours however that would be kinda fun. I do looove ot the way it is tho. I plan on keeping it neer the window , I hope this is a good spot. My house really only has 2 windows downstairs so not sure of I really get a whole lot of light. My back window gets alot thought which Is where I plan on putting it. Is this ok ???? Also, when should I change it frm it's nursery pot?? I'm worried about shocking it.
Oooh how exciting your plant journey is beginning. Welcome to the jungle 😃 🪴. This plant likes light but it can get scorched leaves if left in direct sun. Essentially, if the sun rays don't hit it, and it is getting ambient bright light, then that is perfect. If the sun rays are going to hit it then it would be an idea to pull the plant back a little bit from the window. With regard to repotting, it's always good to let the plant adjust to your conditions first. 2 weeks is normally perfectly fine. This is perfect timing too as growing season is starting. I hope you enjoy all the new leaves through the summer.
@@PlantsofJoy oh great, thank you so much. I'll wait a few weeks before reporting. I decided to keep it away frm directly in window but still in frnt of it. So it's about 14 feet away directly in front so hopefully this should be ok. Thank you so much for responding
I have mine in pon, but not self watering, more I water when I remember, it is also doing really well in a South West window. Great video have just subscribed 👍
Hello in Australia. Yes I can do a video about this. I have experimented with a lot of substrates for this plant and I have to say a chunky aroid soil with lots of bark and perlite is best but I will do a video to explain better.
This is so interesting to me because at my local Garden Center here in Virginia I saw a Birkin that looks exactly like the one you said was reverted and there was only one of them like that in a bunch they had. I noticed that they all looked quite different than the one that I have purchased from them quite some time before that visit. Mine looks more like the first one you showed. It's quite large and it has shown no signs of reverting and keeps growing like a champ. I wonder if the newer ones that they were cultivating are the ones that are having a problem with reverting. I noticed that the ones that I have seen that visit had been a lot whiter looking and limp then the Luscious green appearance mine had and continues to have.
That's a very good point. The tissue cultivation is only as strong as the mother plant. So yes, if the mothers that they were using were prone to reversion then that is probably why we are seeing this so much more. Maybe they'll be a point where the 'true birkin' will become super rare again.
I've had a Birkin for about two years and I'm considering moving it from soil to pon. It's doing great, but I'm slowly moving my more moisture-loving plants over to help with fungus gnats. I watched your video on the process as well as your Mamei repot. Based on your experience, would you recommend pon for the Birkin? I've got a few in line ahead of it because it does like to dry out, so take your time! I appreciate your grounded, practical advice and am so glad to have found your channel! (Next up, Triostar!)
I got for free what my plant app says is a Birkin, but it seems completely or almost completely reverted, so I'm not certain. The previous plant mom didn't say what it was,so I'm trying to figure it out no red stems, though, just green. The leaf casings die and come off, which leads me to believe it is, at least, a philodendron. I don't care. I love plants and if I don't kill it, then I'm happy, no matter what it is. I brought it home and immediately chopped off the top, leaving 3 nodes, and stuck it in water. I've just today moved both mother plant and top cut into (hopefully) brighter light. The mother also seems to have predatory mites, which I've been considering trying to get my hands on, anyway. I look forward to seeing what happens.
I have a Birkin that was growing like crazy, constantly putting out new leaves then suddenly it stopped. The last new leaves it put out would not change to green from white. I gave the plant about two months like that until I finally chopped it back. It took about 6 months for it to finally start growing new growth points. I’m still waiting for leaves to emerge but fingers crossed it will come back into its former glory.
Wow. That really sucks that it happened going into autumn/winter too. Hopefully the change in seasons will wake your plant up so it pushes put some good growth again.
In my experience, the leaves do not get darker over time. Rather younger plants put out green leaves and the leaves develop more striping and more white coloring as the plant grows and develops. The individual leaves do not change after they have hardened off on my plant.
Well now my first plant of it has a half and half leavf with some weird varigation in the red side. I am loving just waiting to see what it is going to do.
Oh cool! The half and half looks epic. It's great when they revert because every leaf is a surprise and it's very cool to watch the plant change so much. You will deffo enjoy it 😊
I think it's ridiculous that being common devalues it. I have 2. One threw a reverting leaf then no more. Regular Birkin. My other one has never reverted in any way. I think it's beautiful regardless.
I totally agree with you there. Some of my best and most lush plants are dirt cheap and I think they're beautiful no matter what. Birkins are probably the most satisfying because they have such an interesting leaf cycle whether it reverts or not.
I have had mine for close to two years. It has not reverted at all. However, I keep having issues with tiny brown pinpricks on leaves. I cut off most of the worst ones and leave a few until I get new growth then I cut the rest of the ones with the brown dots. Then the plant takes off and looks great for months, until it starts to happen again and I do the same process. It's happening again right now. Why is this happening? I test with a water meter and only water when it's pretty dry. Do I need to treat it with a fungicide? Please help me figure this out. I love this plant too! ❤
I have a Birken and I’m still puzzled by it after a year. It has put on 2 new leaves in a year and seams to be sleeping as far as growth goes. It gets bright light close to a NW window. I would love for it to grow enough for me to propagate so I’ll have 2‼️
They are beautiful more than one is always a goal. Perhaps experiment by moving it a little closer to the window. Just a bit at a time though so the plant can adjust. And you will also see whether the plant objects without damage being done.
Wow! That wouldn't begin to cover the price of the pot, soil, feeding, watering, and transportation. And that's not even counting the cost of labor that went into propagation and care before it was sold to WallyWorld! Talk about a loss leader. You scored, everyone else took a big L.
some of the leaves on my birkin have this brown banding right at the base of the leaf where it meets the stem. Doesn’t seem to be harming the plant… anybody else experienced this in their birkin?? what is it?
I have a berkens but I am so afraid to propagate it. I have a mccolley's finale and I have questions about how their leaves grow like a knot or connected together. It was a 4 inch pot that I originally got it in but has not grown like my berkens has. Is that normal?
Oooh I don't have a Mccolleys Finale but I always thought they grew a bit more like a normal Congo which is more spread out. It is on my list though as the colouring is like nothing else.
I agree with the capitalism and conning aspect that way of thinking is correct but at the same time I love this extremely unstable plant because of the reasons people hate it. I've got 16 of these plants none from propagation by myself because they're so unstable. I know it has red genetics which means it can turn pink and there are pink birkins that haven't been chemically induced on the market. But one of my plans reverted back to the Congo and then mutated into a new sport that is absolutely beautiful with dark burgundy leaves and orange stripes. I have another that has multiple half Moon leaves one side being dark green and the other with white striping. And I know without a shadow of a doubt that within the next few years this monstrosity of an amazing plant is going to lead way to new amazing plants that are going to be very expensive. I'm sure I could sell my burgundy and birkin for quite a lot of money as I have never seen and mutation quite like it but I love my little plant and I could never get rid of it. I'm going to do what many other people who are much more talented and have a lot more money are going to do grow this plan out and try to stabilize the mutation.
Wow, that's really really cool. Is it possible to take a propagation? That sounds so dramatic and gorgeous. Mine has one part that has totally reverted. I have separated it out. The Congo part looks pretty stable but obviously with this plant, nobody can tell for sure. Especially now I know yours changed again.
@@PlantsofJoy unfortunately the leaf I was referring to died. Every leave since have been half moons. Onc being a dark burgundy green and the other side completely White with very faint neon green striping five new leaves all half Moon's. I was hoping I could propagate and stabilize that sport but I knew it was unlikely. Still I love my birkins especially my most unstable one
My Birkin put out a perfect half-moon leaf. It was solid green on one side & solid white on the other, no pinstripes developed. It’s very strange. Every leaf since has the typical birkin appearance…weird
Oooh that's really cool. I've seen those half moon ones on Instagram and have not so secretly been wishing mine would put out one. The birkin is deffo interesting and very cool plant.
If you grow the rojo out, big and bushy ot looks really architectural and breathtaking. But I get what you're saying, it is not what you signed up for when you bought a birkin right. Thing is, I've been thinking I never really see very large birkins, yet they should be able to grow massive so that is weird.
Of course it has Everything to do with light..Yours came from nursery, right. And there are no plants shaded by other plants? My Birkin,or White wave, gets northwest light and is thriving, not reverting at all, just beautiful
I would like to know why is my Birkin white leaves are coming out curly, please can you help me by explaining to me what could cause this and if any solution?
That has just started happening to my reverting birkin. Pure white leaves that are a little deformed. I am still working out why. I had it quite close to a grow light but that is the only difference. I'm not sure at this point but when I know I will share.
I've got twelve philodendron birkin s three of them have heavy mutations. But none of my mutated burkins I've actually reverted. These plants have so many genetics in them I don't think any will ever truly revert or at least that would be a rarity. It's more likely you just have a mutant it seems to me a large percentage of birkins are unstable mutants. This videos approximately one year old I'm interested to know how your birkins are doing today
TWELVE!!!! That's impressive. My birkin had several small plants in one pot. One of those plants has fully reverted to Rojo Congo and I potted it up separately because the leaves are much bigger than the birkin. The rest of the birkins are probably mutants as you say, but one pot has started throwing completely white leaves.
So glad I found this video. Had my Birkin for 3 years now and it just opened a half-reverting leaf. I turned to the internet thinking my plant was dying or something. Very informative video thank you.

Thank you so much for subscribing. I bet your birkin loves that light spot. I'm about to put one of them in pon. Fingers crossed it goes well.
I had one fully revert to Congo and it's absolutely gorgeous, im hoping my small one reverts as well.
Oooh! How long did it take to fully revert? Its a cool process to watch!
@@PlantsofJoy about a year, it's huge and a deep luscious green.
I have one and I love it.
It's the one of my faves too. Thanks for watching 😊 🌱
Thank you for sharing! These showed up overnight in our nurseries, I have always wondered what they were called...
It's a pleasure 😊
Yes my oldest one is now all green
Yes I love it so far it is normal ! Can you d a video or partly about soil ! Thank you I am in Australia
Yess!! My fingers are crossed!
I really enjoyed your video
Thank you 😊
I have a Birkin that was growing like crazy, constantly putting out new leaves then suddenly it stopped.
Oooh that's really cool. It's not something I've come across before but would love to. It's such an unpredictable plant 🙂
Well now my first plant of it has a half and half leavf with some weird varigation in the red side. I am loving just waiting to see what it is going to do.
Oh cool! The half and half looks epic. It's great when they revert because every leaf is a surprise and it's very cool to watch the plant change so much. You will deffo enjoy it 😊
You make me want to start making videos again
Do it!!!!!!
great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
I think it's ridiculous that being common devalues it.
I love mine.
I just got my first Birkin at Walmart for $1.96!
Score!!!! You win, that's the cheapest I've heard of it being sold for!
Could be wrong about the growth though as I don't have one so don't have experience.
Almost reminds me of red moon leaves
My Birkin put out a perfect half-moon leaf. It was solid green on one side & solid white on the other, no pinstripes developed. It’s very strange. Every leaf since has the typical birkin appearance…weird
Oooh that's really cool. I've seen those half moon ones on Instagram and have not so secretly been wishing mine would put out one. The birkin is deffo interesting and very cool plant.
@@PlantsofJoy Mine has half deep red colour and the other half variegated white! So weird and wonderful alien! I love it.
Mine reverted back to a rojo (red) congo idk how to feel about it
If you grow the rojo out, big and bushy ot looks really architectural and breathtaking. But I get what you're saying, it is not what you signed up for when you bought a birkin right. Thing is, I've been thinking I never really see very large birkins, yet they should be able to grow massive so that is weird.
My Birkin has giant leaves that start small and green and get more striped as they grow. Mine does not do the white leaf. How strange.
Of course it has Everything to do with light..Yours came from nursery, right. And there are no plants shaded by other plants? My Birkin,or White wave, gets northwest light and is thriving, not reverting at all, just beautiful
That's awesome. It's great to have a sweet light spot to let your plants get all lush.
The latest left comes out white my newest leaf came out burgundy
Oh wow that's cool. Love the diversity of this plant.
What is a difference between Birkin and White wave???Same thing, right?
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's the same thing. Just a fancy marketing term but the same beautiful plant.
Easy growing plant? What climate are you in? Is it humid and warm? That’s not the case for 6a😭
I cant figure out the way to keep mine alive. I got 3 of them in the pass, they all died no matter what I did.
I loved you talking about capitalism lol that was so cute.
My birkin is starting to throw out leaves, the same as my princess.it looked funny.botton 5 leaves birkin.top 2 like princess..
That sounds super cool. I wanna see that!!!
I have a huge one that has never reverted
Here in Poland it is now so cheap I bought one on sale for literaly cheaper then one bread lol.
Woah. That's awesome
