Plants that are ABSOLUTELY THRIVING this winter

Plants that are ABSOLUTELY THRIVING this winter
I fell in love with this philodendron birkin this weekend at a friends house. I’m just getting into plants. One of my BFFs gave me an arrowhead plant… Now I want to develop my green thumb. So I’m on a mission to find my philodendron birkin
did you know that the mature stage can revert? I repot a pink princess is a mature stage, and when I did the repot, I did carefully but then the new leafs started to grow from the latest leafs. Of course, has started to damaged itself
I love my birken and it’s starting to revert back with some read streaks-but ai think it makes it even more interesting! I appreciate your backstory on them.
canadian winter 30 humidity or less
I have a huge one that has never reverted
THANK YOU!!! I am going to put my Prayer Plant in Pon!!
really interesting to know its origin- thank you! :)
Just another pon video that doesn’t explain the post pon transfer process 😒 still looking for answers.
ZEROwater Filter is the solution
So glad I found this video. Had my Birkin for 3 years now and it just opened a half-reverting leaf. I turned to the internet thinking my plant was dying or something. Very informative video thank you.
I have had mine for close to two years. It has not reverted at all. However, I keep having issues with tiny brown pinpricks on leaves. I cut off most of the worst ones and leave a few until I get new growth then I cut the rest of the ones with the brown dots. Then the plant takes off and looks great for months, until it starts to happen again and I do the same process. It's happening again right now. Why is this happening? I test with a water meter and only water when it's pretty dry. Do I need to treat it with a fungicide? Please help me figure this out. I love this plant too! ❤
You were very informative - thank you.
I finally have calatheas living in my house. They live in soil. I had the problem with brown leaves and they seemed to start dying as soon as they came in the door. I thought it was humidity but my medallion actually got tired of being in the bathroom. I use water conditioner that is for aquariums. It takes all the chemicals out. So now I have several calatheas and marantas and a stromanthe. I even have a baby orbifolia that has been here over a month. 😮 I love calatheas and I'm so glad I can have them now. 😊 I'm considering putting my alocasias in pon.
My Birkin has giant leaves that start small and green and get more striped as they grow. Mine does not do the white leaf. How strange.
So we don’t plant them in any soil ? Just this pon ?
I buy filtered water for my calathea orbi. Am having trouble with her . I may of over watered her so I repotted her . And she’s now super depressed all her stems have separated. I’ve got her on a bed of pebbles an water . Can’t believe I’ve upset her so much . But she’s really grew loads of baby leaves but her big leaves are covering them . I’ve even used little ties to keep the leaves up . 😢 am just hoping I can save her . Do I think I mis some of my orchids mix in her
Try using a water conditioner for aquarium, just a few drops in tap water. Your plants will love it and the crispy edges will be a thing of the past.
Gorgeous Melanochrysum
Thank you, it was very informative. Just recently purchased one on Tiktok and received it a few days ago. LOVE it thus far....
Best uk video on Melanochrysum. Thank you..😊
Don’t use a humidifier. They are not really useful and end up breaking your electronics.
Great video!! I’m doing it!!
Yes, I have a birkin plant and never had any problems with it at all It is has never lost its stripes the most easiest plant to grow
I cant figure out the way to keep mine alive. I got 3 of them in the pass, they all died no matter what I did.
Do you think this method would be helpful for any plant in the Peperomia family?
Lazy humidity person here! 👋 Late to the party, looking for marantha tips! 🧐
could this help my ornata and white star i wonder? i am having major issues with emerging leaves on those two
Thanks u prompted me to buy humidifier while watching you ? This is a good move ✅
Noooo it’s not
Omg I didn’t know you had to rinse the pon! I’ve just repotted all my calatheas. I used soil ninja’s version. It did look pretty clean however…
Question… does pon stop reproduction of thrips?
Set up a tropical aquarium and use the fish tank water for your plants. I put water from the dehumidifier into the fish tank, then use the fish tank water for my plants. It works so well!
Thank you for a very informative video. 😊 I have a birkin baby, and was really curious about what was going on with it. Had heard a few of the murmurs of people having opinions about it, and just wanted to know more abt that, and the plant lineage in general. Apparently, the unhappiness has reached the producers as well, because mine only cost a few quid in a supermarket, and nowhere on it does it say it is a birkin. It is marketed as a Philodendron White Vein. 😂 I got it last fall, and it has been doing quite well. The last leaf it put out however, has the most gorgeous dark purply-red hue on one side. It is sort of blotchy like the pattern on a Ficus Elastica Tineke, and i hope the next few leaves do the same. It covers about a third, and the rest of the leaf is nearly completely white. That's what lead me here, as i want to propagate the new part of the plant, but i am unsure of how to. I am quite tough on my plants usually, and have the opinion, that if a plant dies from me, it just wasnt the right one for my home. I'm just a bit fussy with this one though. I really don't want to hurt the original plant, nor destroy the beautiful new vairegation. 😬 I have adhd, so delicate plants that need very specific and uniform care, usually stand no chance. Im fine with it for the most part though. Philodendrons tend to do well with the kind of mistreatment i give them, and Monstera downright loves it. My birkin however, i want to be sure about before i do anything drastic.
I’m really looking forward to the care video. Aocasia are also my favorite genus, but the care is so tricky especially when it comes to watering. The roots are so delicate and rot ao easily at the tinest mistake. I agree that each will need a specific care video.
So i was able to grow huge calathea in soil it even flowered was growing really well until I went away for nearly two weeks and it nearly died its still in recovery now
My calatheas etc (well everything inside) are going to mainly Leca. So happy now. Well the ones Leca or my DIY pon. I actually buy a cat litter over here in Australia. that’s 100% zeolite. Cheaper to make it. My Manoyaki is in Leca and no browning etc
I wanna add after watching more of your video, I also have used pon as a growing medium with my Alocasia.
Hi. I feel so empowered after listening to your video. I have one question, I have lechuza pon but it’s very dusty, is that supposed to be or am I supposed to wash it first?
My marantas were thriving and growing like crazy in soil until I went away for 2 weeks and they only got watered once. I came back and they were half dead with lots of dead leaves. I tried to water sparsely and often so they could recover but I fear they have root rot. I am gone 2 weeks out of every month so I don’t think I have any choice but to switch my plants to semi hydro. Thank you for this video-I was leaning towards leca until I watched this! Going to use pon now.
What does your light situation look like? You didn’t address this and I’m curious! My lemon lime is suffering and I don’t want to lose it!
This was the informative video I needed-- I had a birkin that moved with me through several states that stressed her severely to the point of reversion. I’ve moved to a more long term space and she just started showing a new leaf growth but I don’t know, if it’s going to be a Congo red or birkin leaf. I’ll still love her either way but the gamble is strong and exciting
I have a Birkin story, and perhaps a plant-not sure yet. This summer I was plant-sitting for a friend. She had dropped off a bunch of plants, all in their original small plastic pots. I had them all on the floor in front of a sliding glass door for light. I have a golden retriever who doesn’t usually touch my plants, so I didn’t even think to keep it out of her reach. Then another friend dropped off his golden retriever while he was out of town for a couple of days, and the two dogs together went a little crazy with their play. I had them inside the house on a day when the outside temps reached well over 40ºC, so I didn’t have the option of just putting them in the back garden. At one point they both were running from one end of the house to the other and I had to calm them down for a time-out. I noticed there was dirt on the floor and thought that one of them had brought something in from the garden, then remembered that they had not been outside-I looked more closely and saw one of the pots I was supposed to be caring for, empty on my couch! I stopped and thought, oh god, I hope that wasn’t my friends Birkin, which of course it was. The first thing I worried about was whether or not the plant was toxic for dogs, which of course it is. Luckily neither dog got sick, but I was a wreck for a few hours thinking I had killed either my or my friend’s dog. Then I wondered about the plant…had my friend paid a fortune for it that I was now going to be on the hook for? Luckily, she had not. Then about a month later I was looking for an empty pot and came across the pot that the dogs had gotten. I had scraped up some of the dirt and put it back in the pot, but It looked as if the plant was completely gone so I put it outside and forgot all about it; but now I saw one small whitish leaf emerging from the dirt and was thrilled that it had survived not only the dog attack but also being neglected for a month or so without being watered. But it had a really hard time getting going, and it was another couple of months until any more leaves emerged. Now there are a few small leaves, but they have lost the variegation and seem to be just green with a tiny hint of red in the stem only. My guess is that it is just taking its time to re-establish itself. Once it does, I’m hoping it will speed up a bit, perhaps even offering some Birkin leaves at one point or another. I also wonder about where the name came from. Anything to do with Jane, or the purse? Seems like there should be a story in there somewhere … or someone should make one up! Great video-thanks for sharing your knowledge !
I've had a Birkin for about two years and I'm considering moving it from soil to pon. It's doing great, but I'm slowly moving my more moisture-loving plants over to help with fungus gnats. I watched your video on the process as well as your Mamei repot. Based on your experience, would you recommend pon for the Birkin? I've got a few in line ahead of it because it does like to dry out, so take your time! I appreciate your grounded, practical advice and am so glad to have found your channel! (Next up, Triostar!)
Great video and solution for the Drama Queens in Our collection. I too had been struggling with the most beautiful plant in My collection the Maranta Lemon Lime. I’d tried a chunky, airy, mix and although not bad, I couldn’t seem to keep it moisturized, became brown tips, and the humidity wasn’t high enough? I bought a Humidifier even though I have constantly 60% without it but that didn’t help. After killing a very large full plant I bought another one but planted it in Pon. That went well for a while but I noticed root rot and the plant slowly went to the light. I also didn’t like how compact the roots seemed in the vessel. My latest attempt is in Lecha and My Plants and I are very happy. I have almost converted My entire collection of 150 plants to Semi hydro simply because of the results and ease of care. I have both self watering, wick system and the cache pot systems but the real reason for the New Life Experience are the see through plastic pots!! Not only can You detect problems quicker by examining the roots growth, but it lets You more easily determine when to water based on the moisture in the pot. I primarily fill the cache pot half the height of the plant pot and let her Chill. I also feed them as long as They’re growing. I’ve found that basically all plants will adapt to this system but it does cause them time to “Transition” into being constantly wet. Also during the transitioning I do water them a little from the top every few days in order to keep the roots moist but soon they start growing better. I’ve had fantastic success with all My Alocasia’s too. My Variegated Frydek is huge with 10x 40cm+ leaves in winter and none have gone dormant I believe, because of the constant availability of moisture/light/nourishment. Your plants are beautiful. It truly does make this Hobby more fun with less stress and guess work. The Gnats are gone, and so is the Moisture Meter. I’m currently doing an experiment with plastic pots with holes and without the “Wick system” and the glass vessel with and without holes. It does seem as though the more ventilation the roots get then the faster the plant grows? Fortunately none have died or have become other issues but I’ll see in a few months where We are. That’s the nice part of this Hobby. Learning new ways to nurture Our Babies, seeing Them grow and be healthy, and sharing Our experiences to help Others better enjoy Natures beauty. Although I do love the feel and smell of soil, Semi hydro has saved Me chips and the plants grow like crazy. Keep giving good content and thanks for the video.
I have a need to water aswell lol, thanks for the tips!
Did you water from the top as Lechuza advise for a few months or did you use self watering pot straight away?
I love mine.
I have a Birkin, and I LOVE it!
I have a P. Birkin. It has not reverted and grows crazy mad. I had some leaf blight run through my plant collection back in July 23 and the Birkin was the first I noticed with the blight. Although I had to chop all infected leaves (as I did with all of my Philos) the Birkin bounced back super fast. Much faster than my Rojo Congo, Green Princess or any others. Great plant! I have been seeing them in big box stores as half/half reverted and they sell so I am not sure what the fuss is. I purchased a Pink Princess from a local green house and it reverted quickly. So now it's just a Burgundy Princess... Still beautiful! **Note: Never mist your plants no matter what anyone tells you! That is how the leaf blight started and it spread quickly through my Philodendron collection!
I just ordered a Alocasia Zebrina, can't wait to get it. My first Alocasia.
Almost reminds me of red moon leaves
Hello, I have a question : when you switch from soil to Lechuza pon, do you have to change the pots ? and is it mandatory to have self watering pots ? Is it possible to have lechuza pon in terra-cotta pots ? and what kind of fertilizer do you use after six months, chemical or organic ? Thanks !
