@@j.d.564 Some of them are more involved than others but many of them aren't. It's all about their stylist and what designer they're working with. Also what dresses the designer will send them. Most of these clothes don't belong to the celebrity/not bought. It's sent by the brands for them to wear. I think sometimes they send several opinions and the celebrity and stylist choose.

Its not just you! Literally every early 2000s movie was about the quirky uncool girl getting invited to a party and getting told the wrong theme and getting made fun of and laughed out of the party.
As disappointing as everyone just ignoring the theme is, I am even more disappointed in just how drab and boring all the looks were. I remember times when the Met was all avant garde and looks that pushed fashion and was an opportunity for designers to show off lavish and incredible looks. I wouldn't care about the theme as much if there was anything even interesting to look at. People are pushing fashion on every red carpet these days and so designers need to REALLY step up their game for this night. Fashion's 'greatest' night? Not anymore.
I agree completely! The Met Gala is like Christmas for us fashion enthusiasts and it should definitely be that for designers as well. The Met Gala used to feel like when you were a kid and you knew you were about to unwrap a present you knew you asked for months ago and now it’s like “ oh great grandma got me another pack of socks for the 11th year in a row” 😂
i totally get what you mean but tbh, the met gala has always had those celebs showing up who never bothered to follow the theme and really bland fits. like consistently, *almost* every dude shows up in the most boring black suit. it’s only the small handful who actually follow the theme and do a good job like rihanna, blake, etc.

The designer for Michael Kors said initially that he did not follow the theme and just wanted to make timeless pieces (that's really subjective too), I didn't like that at all. If you don't like the met, then don't design clothes for that event, but clearly he is doing it for the money. Even H&M did better and followed the theme. He is not superior, he is simply showing his lack of versatility as a designer

I've been seeing a lot of Old Hollywood Galmour™ looks and I think people seriously mixed up the Gilded Age and the Golden Age of Hollywood....which I just can't even process.

I feel like a lot of people who attended this year mixed gilded with golden and thought the theme was the golden age (of hollywood). That would explain all the weirdly 1950s/movie star esque inspired looks? Also, I'm certain many people attending were styled by other people who, as people in fashion, should have known what the gilded age is?? strange
Don’t the stylists have knowledge of fashion history? Not that some weren’t beautifully made and did have some quirky subtle references but I just felt they’re could’ve been more fantastic, over the top designs. That era produced, bustles, gorgeous fabrics, embroidery, details ruffles, bows, jewels, etc. But a twenties flapper, nope or that cheap looking silver and black Tiger gown. Ugh!

It feels like the hunger games fashion edition. Like they had 24 hours to figure out what to wear as the themes were given within that time fame... Maybe just maybe that's why the themes aren't fully followed
I'm so curious about the mechanics of it all....how are the designers/celebs matched up? Who pays? Who keeps? Who decides what item is worn? What if one of the parties doesn't like it? Who gets final approval? Do the celebs actually have any input? Why are some custom made & some not? What if you just want your mom to make your dress cuz you know she'll do a better job? Why can't they stick to the bloody theme?!? So many questions!!
My understanding is it depends. If you want to front a ton of personal money you might have more control and more choice. Not all designers do custom looks every year at the met bc it's a huge time and labor commitment and if they are already booked with other clients they may only be willing to open up pieces that have already been made. Most designers limit how many looks they will do so if you want to work with a certain designer and their book is full you gotta have a plan B. They will be more willing to go over the top if you are a big name that will get a lot of press or have an existing relationship with the brand (close friends w designer or an ambassador for the brand). You could have existing sponsorship/ambassadorship deals that prevent you from working with certain designers if they are seen as a competitor. (Think if you're the face of Tiffany's rn you might not be able to wear Cartier just bc they have a piece that you think would better fit the theme!) You are probably only keeping the piece if you paid for it or are close personal friends with the designer and they decide to gift it to you. If you work with a stylist they will probably do a lot of the lifting on lining this stuff up in which case you are relying on their connections to get you with a designer. Blake Lively famously doesn't have a stylist and so she personally pitches ideas for outfits to designers and curates those relationships on her own. A whole industry and structure exists behind the individual celebrities to make this stuff happen. Lots of networking and who you know and how connected your staff/manager/label/etc are plays a huge role in what you are wearing and how much you pay for it. And of course on top of all of this -- just bc they have money/celebrity doesn't mean they have taste, style or even care about how they look at all. (This is just my understanding from personal interest in celebrity and the entertainment industry, so take it with a grain of salt)
I honesty blame the MET and the stylists. Why does the MET continue to allow them not to follow. Its a free for all the last two years. I mean cmon. Stylists especially if you have a designer working with you, there is zero excuse
no, bc i am SO convinced i could have crushed this year's met gala. my outfit motif would be inherent vice: in historical clothing preservation, "inherent vice" is when flaws with the materials of a garment or its construction cause it to prematurely decay. this is especially prevalent in gilded age clothing due to their use of weighted silks. in the gilded age, silk was sold by weight, not by yard, so merchants would soak the material in alkali salt, which would let them sell less silk for more money (capitalism corrupts), but the alkali salts would cause the garment to deeply deteriorate over time. i would have worn a dress inspired by an exhibit i saw at the RISD museum on inherent vice while on vacation with some friends of mine. i would also make it fun and sexy by using the "decay" of the garment to incorporate sheer materials and strategic rips. the dress would be a metaphor for the "inherent vice" of the gilded age, which was outwardly opulent but inwardly a rotting pit of human rights violations, and indeed for america itself, which is built on the inherent vices of slavery and genocide. the idea is so obvious i can only assume that no one thought of it because no celebrities saw the RISD exhibit because, as is equally obvious, rich people do not go to providence rhode island for vacation.
And again most celebrities aren’t involved in the designs n just focus on the publicity n their actual jobs if not interested in the theme behind this n fashion itself

Dove Cameron's dress has almost a stomacher, it's just dropped low and that swag of "fabric" underneath it references the skirt- on-skirt, swag look of the period. This dress should be acclaimed as much as Blake's.

Carey Mulligan: thank you. So so happy with this classy, almost simple but still very showy look. The gold chevron bustle was perfection, although maybe a bit bigger? however, this is still the best one yet in either of Luke's videos (minus Sarah Jessica Parker). we do love us some Schiaparelli black and gold;)

I love Erykah Badu's look as a quilt maker. It references crazy quilts, which were precursors to modern patchwork quilts. Crazy quilts were purely decorative. They were meant to show off a woman's needlework skills, hence the complex piecing and frick ton of embroidery and other fancy stiches. Many also feature beadwork. Very interesting example of a luxury textile good from the period.
Erykah's look also references "costumes" worn by formerly enslaved peoples to celebrate 4th of July. A man wearing a very similar outfit is shown in a photo by Doris Ulman who took extensive photos of the formerly enslaved still living on plantations in the south during the 30's.

It affected poor white Americans, but it took so many people from 1 broken system directly into another right after they were promised freedom. The end of the Civil War didn't mean everyone's life changed for the better overnight. Most formerly enslaved black Americans stayed on or near the plantations they had been bound to. They often continued to work for the same families/masters. Tl:dr I love the double reference she served in this stunning look.
Quilts and the importance and legacy of quilting within the African American community, culture and tradition make that outfit beautifully subversive and I love it.
it would've been cool if someone had done a historically accurate natural form style dress in a gold fabric for most of it, but then the skirt under the swags of fabric at the hips was made of something white and dyed to look bloodstained. So it's like a layer of gold over blood.
Camilla Mendez said in her vogue video that her dress made her thinks of a dress from the Gilded Age, the « lightbulb dress » that was worn by Alice Vanderbilt, who was referencing the new invention of that time at a costume party. I think the inspiration would of been more clear if Camilla Mendez took a actual lightbulb to the red carpet, as Alice Vanderbild did at the costume party.
I think one day you should post what *you'd* wear to the MET Gala. Something you can potentially do is multiple outfits, as to not have to box your imagination. Considering their financial resources and connections to stylists and designers, there really is no excuse for them to fail this hard. If these "celebs" are too cool to follow the MET Gala theme, then just don't attend. Either the MET be more discerning with their invites, or they need to implement some sort of approval system when it comes to the outfit. Otherwise, just dissolve the gala 😤

This! Recently i was watching someone that mentioned that particular theme and i, who was only eleven at the moment it happened (so therefore, had no clue), got so excited to know they had done such theme because it had so much potential
For such a fun and creative theme - I can’t believe how many designers and celebrities completely missed the part! I hope Vogue become stricter with their dress code. If Cannes can still deny entrance to their red carpet with their (frankly ridiculous) high heel rule for women, why can’t Vogue do the same for a themed event that is meant to showcase fashion as art and an important part of history? Completely ignoring the theme feels a bit disrespectful.

Cara's outfit wasn't really cultural appropriation. The smoking jacket evolved (from the dinner jacket) once Turkish tobacco products became popularised in Britain during the 19th century, through trade with the Ottomon Empire during the Crimean War (with the British and Ottoman empires allied together and thus dealt in trade). There were also previous iterations of the smoking jacket in Britain prior to this as mentioned by Samuel Pepys, who lived in the 1600's. The Turkish tobacco that was popularised was also originally introduced to the Ottoman by the Spanish from their previous conquests. The only appropriation in this situation was the tobacco brought to Eurasia by the Spanish. There are many instances of true cultural appropriation that we need not convolute the issue by confusing economic trade for appropriation.
I wish he wouldn't immediately say things are cultural appropriation when he does not know how the clothing actually came to be and is not a part of the culture himself. Just because a certain style has it's origin in a certain culture and country doesn't automatically mean it's cultural appropriation to see that style in another culture and country. Cultures have shared, traded and intertwined with each other for centuries, it happens very naturally and that includes clothing.
I would disagree with this as just because something was inspired by another does not mean that it does not belong to that culture. Just like how the Egyptians were colonized and inspired by the Roman’s, things became their culture become of that influence. Influence does not equal possession of cultural inspiration. If something was mainly viewed to belong to 1 country, it is written off by that country’s name. Ofc many things were inspired by one country to another but because this was distinctly known to be Turkish. I believe it is cultural appropriation . Also the fact that she revealed herself afterwards was highly offensive for a nation that is highly influenced by Islam and definitely not representative of the Ottoman culture. As a Turkish person, this is my opinion.

Like i said, during the Crimean war both Britain and the ottoman empire dealt on trade, as in we traded goods with each other and not just take away from one end. People need to recognise trade is not only fair but good for both sides. That's why it's called trade. Also, that style was in fashion so long in Europe, and bearing in mind many Turkish people also live in the Balkans (part of Europe and is, itself, at least partly I Europe. As a Turkish person surely you know your own history and geography? But if you want to insist, then I'm sure you are far more upset that, by your standards, Turkey culturally appropriated tobacco from the Spanish and then claimed it as their own.

In fairness to the attendees, I think the sheer number of people who ended up off-theme is proof that Gilded Glamour did not successfully convey "Gilded Age." It's the sort of thing that you could argue the teacher into throwing out in test review, because the question was poorly phrased.
Another video i watched showed fhe actual e-mail the MET sent - it explained the time frame and even mentioned some trends of the time. So, really no excuse for this mess.

kind of impressive how many people managed to interpret gilded age as the 20s or the 50s/60s ???? like google is free my friend. i literally googled the theme as soon as i found out what it was because i am not well versed enough in fashion history to know what that means and i had a pretty rough idea of what general kinds of trends to look for (bustles, gloves, hats, those mens coats) after just looking around for a bit.

I feel like a lot of people who attended this year mixed gilded with golden and thought the theme was the golden age (of hollywood). That would explain all the weirdly 1950s/movie star esque inspired looks? Also, I'm certain many people attending were styled by other people who, as people in fashion, should have known what the gilded age is?? strange
Don’t the stylists have knowledge of fashion history? Not that some weren’t beautifully made and did have some quirky subtle references but I just felt they’re could’ve been more fantastic, over the top designs. That era produced, bustles, gorgeous fabrics, embroidery, details ruffles, bows, jewels, etc. But a twenties flapper, nope or that cheap looking silver and black Tiger gown. Ugh!

I'm so curious about the mechanics of it all....how are the designers/celebs matched up? Who pays? Who keeps? Who decides what item is worn? What if one of the parties doesn't like it? Who gets final approval? Do the celebs actually have any input? Why are some custom made & some not? What if you just want your mom to make your dress cuz you know she'll do a better job? Why can't they stick to the bloody theme?!? So many questions!!

My understanding is it depends. If you want to front a ton of personal money you might have more control and more choice. Not all designers do custom looks every year at the met bc it's a huge time and labor commitment and if they are already booked with other clients they may only be willing to open up pieces that have already been made. Most designers limit how many looks they will do so if you want to work with a certain designer and their book is full you gotta have a plan B. They will be more willing to go over the top if you are a big name that will get a lot of press or have an existing relationship with the brand (close friends w designer or an ambassador for the brand). You could have existing sponsorship/ambassadorship deals that prevent you from working with certain designers if they are seen as a competitor. (Think if you're the face of Tiffany's rn you might not be able to wear Cartier just bc they have a piece that you think would better fit the theme!) You are probably only keeping the piece if you paid for it or are close personal friends with the designer and they decide to gift it to you. If you work with a stylist they will probably do a lot of the lifting on lining this stuff up in which case you are relying on their connections to get you with a designer. Blake Lively famously doesn't have a stylist and so she personally pitches ideas for outfits to designers and curates those relationships on her own. A whole industry and structure exists behind the individual celebrities to make this stuff happen. Lots of networking and who you know and how connected your staff/manager/label/etc are plays a huge role in what you are wearing and how much you pay for it. And of course on top of all of this -- just bc they have money/celebrity doesn't mean they have taste, style or even care about how they look at all. (This is just my understanding from personal interest in celebrity and the entertainment industry, so take it with a grain of salt)

I honesty blame the MET and the stylists. Why does the MET continue to allow them not to follow. Its a free for all the last two years. I mean cmon. Stylists especially if you have a designer working with you, there is zero excuse
no, bc i am SO convinced i could have crushed this year's met gala. my outfit motif would be inherent vice: in historical clothing preservation, "inherent vice" is when flaws with the materials of a garment or its construction cause it to prematurely decay. this is especially prevalent in gilded age clothing due to their use of weighted silks. in the gilded age, silk was sold by weight, not by yard, so merchants would soak the material in alkali salt, which would let them sell less silk for more money (capitalism corrupts), but the alkali salts would cause the garment to deeply deteriorate over time. i would have worn a dress inspired by an exhibit i saw at the RISD museum on inherent vice while on vacation with some friends of mine. i would also make it fun and sexy by using the "decay" of the garment to incorporate sheer materials and strategic rips. the dress would be a metaphor for the "inherent vice" of the gilded age, which was outwardly opulent but inwardly a rotting pit of human rights violations, and indeed for america itself, which is built on the inherent vices of slavery and genocide. the idea is so obvious i can only assume that no one thought of it because no celebrities saw the RISD exhibit because, as is equally obvious, rich people do not go to providence rhode island for vacation.

Dove Cameron's dress has almost a stomacher, it's just dropped low and that swag of "fabric" underneath it references the skirt- on-skirt, swag look of the period. This dress should be acclaimed as much as Blake's.

Carey Mulligan: thank you. So so happy with this classy, almost simple but still very showy look. The gold chevron bustle was perfection, although maybe a bit bigger? however, this is still the best one yet in either of Luke's videos (minus Sarah Jessica Parker). we do love us some Schiaparelli black and gold;)

I love Erykah Badu's look as a quilt maker. It references crazy quilts, which were precursors to modern patchwork quilts. Crazy quilts were purely decorative. They were meant to show off a woman's needlework skills, hence the complex piecing and frick ton of embroidery and other fancy stiches. Many also feature beadwork. Very interesting example of a luxury textile good from the period.
Erykah's look also references "costumes" worn by formerly enslaved peoples to celebrate 4th of July. A man wearing a very similar outfit is shown in a photo by Doris Ulman who took extensive photos of the formerly enslaved still living on plantations in the south during the 30's.

It affected poor white Americans, but it took so many people from 1 broken system directly into another right after they were promised freedom. The end of the Civil War didn't mean everyone's life changed for the better overnight. Most formerly enslaved black Americans stayed on or near the plantations they had been bound to. They often continued to work for the same families/masters.

it would've been cool if someone had done a historically accurate natural form style dress in a gold fabric for most of it, but then the skirt under the swags of fabric at the hips was made of something white and dyed to look bloodstained. So it's like a layer of gold over blood.

Camilla Mendez said in her vogue video that her dress made her thinks of a dress from the Gilded Age, the « lightbulb dress » that was worn by Alice Vanderbilt, who was referencing the new invention of that time at a costume party. I think the inspiration would of been more clear if Camilla Mendez took a actual lightbulb to the red carpet, as Alice Vanderbild did at the costume party.

Luke, would you mind to comment on the Met Gala 2013 - "Punk: Chaos to Couture"? I know it's almost a decade ago, but I would be very interested in your opinion or rating of the looks. I came across it today through Sarah Jessica Parker's TH-cam Vouge video, in which she reviews each of her Met looks from 1995 to today.
The theme of "punk meets haute coutoure" made my ears prick up and I think it was a wonderful theme. Do you feel like commenting on old Met Gala looks as well?

For such a fun and creative theme - I can’t believe how many designers and celebrities completely missed the part! I hope Vogue become stricter with their dress code. If Cannes can still deny entrance to their red carpet with their (frankly ridiculous) high heel rule for women, why can’t Vogue do the same for a themed event that is meant to showcase fashion as art and an important part of history? Completely ignoring the theme feels a bit disrespectful.

Cara's outfit wasn't really cultural appropriation. The smoking jacket evolved (from the dinner jacket) once Turkish tobacco products became popularised in Britain during the 19th century, through trade with the Ottomon Empire during the Crimean War (with the British and Ottoman empires allied together and thus dealt in trade). There were also previous iterations of the smoking jacket in Britain prior to this as mentioned by Samuel Pepys, who lived in the 1600's. The Turkish tobacco that was popularised was also originally introduced to the Ottoman by the Spanish from their previous conquests. The only appropriation in this situation was the tobacco brought to Eurasia by the Spanish. There are many instances of true cultural appropriation that we need not convolute the issue by confusing economic trade for appropriation.
I wish he wouldn't immediately say things are cultural appropriation when he does not know how the clothing actually came to be and is not a part of the culture himself. Just because a certain style has it's origin in a certain culture and country doesn't automatically mean it's cultural appropriation to see that style in another culture and country. Cultures have shared, traded and intertwined with each other for centuries, it happens very naturally and that includes clothing.

I would disagree with this as just because something was inspired by another does not mean that it does not belong to that culture. Just like how the Egyptians were colonized and inspired by the Roman’s, things became their culture become of that influence. Influence does not equal possession of cultural inspiration. If something was mainly viewed to belong to 1 country, it is written off by that country’s name. Ofc many things were inspired by one country to another but because this was distinctly known to be Turkish. I believe it is cultural appropriation . Also the fact that she revealed herself afterwards was highly offensive for a nation that is highly influenced by Islam and definitely not representative of the Ottoman culture. As a Turkish person, this is my opinion.
@@zerolahmachun7372 you are misunderstanding how the jacket wasintroduced originally to Britain. Like i said, during the Crimean war both Britain and the ottoman empire dealt on trade, as in we traded goods with each other and not just take away from one end. People need to recognise trade is not only fair but good for both sides. That's why it's called trade. Also, that style was in fashion so long in Europe, and bearing in mind many Turkish people also live in the Balkans (part of Europe and is, itself, at least partly I Europe. As a Turkish person surely you know your own history and geography? But if you want to insist, then I'm sure you are far more upset that, by your standards, Turkey culturally appropriated tobacco from the Spanish and then claimed it as their own.

I would have been obsessed with a look (specifically a dress, but a suit look could be cool too) that was inspired by the vintage Louis Vitton trunks, that would have been an excellent self reference too, as one of the only brands that was around back then.

The fact the Met has a theme and people have this amazing opportunity to let out their creative side... And they fail. EVERY YEAR... Pure pain.
In fairness to the attendees, I think the sheer number of people who ended up off-theme is proof that Gilded Glamour did not successfully convey "Gilded Age." It's the sort of thing that you could argue the teacher into throwing out in test review, because the question was poorly phrased.
But you have people referencing 1980s ? So they knew it was about American history, yet didn't put much research into it
Another video i watched showed fhe actual e-mail the MET sent - it explained the time frame and even mentioned some trends of the time. So, really no excuse for this mess.

kind of impressive how many people managed to interpret gilded age as the 20s or the 50s/60s ???? like google is free my friend. i literally googled the theme as soon as i found out what it was because i am not well versed enough in fashion history to know what that means and i had a pretty rough idea of what general kinds of trends to look for (bustles, gloves, hats, those mens coats) after just looking around for a bit.
