Wow, I didn't think there would be this much interest in the comments about Kim K's dress. I decided to do a little more digging after reading some opinions on it, and came across this wonderful Twitter thread by fashion historian Dr. Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell. She talks about the ethics of wearing museum pieces in very digestible detail with other examples as well: twitter.com/HottyCouture/status/1522257911933591562 I thought I'd share for anyone interested in reading further!
Just to add some additional info to Kim wearing the faux fur - she wore it because she actually couldn't fit into the dress, the backside was still open so it was worn to cover that.
As a curator myself, I won't be adding more about the fibers stress, the contrast between environments or the contact with the chemicals of a living body. I will focus on the "other" part, the theory and ethics of conservation. The dress itself is an icon because what it means, not by itself. I wasn't just "a" dress from a famous person, it's a dress worn in a historical moment, by an historical person. Now that dress is not "the dress that Marilyn Monroe wore in this occasion when she did this and that, etc etc etc", it's "that Marilyn Monroe's dress that Kim Kardashian's wore in the MET Gala". She added her own name to something that have NOTHING to do with her. You see, the point of saying that art and culture belongs to everyone is basically saying that it belongs to *nobody*, so *nobody* should be able to claim ownership or pay for it. At the end of the day, girl, I'm not from the EEUU and all that is not part of my history, but I see a horrible precedent here and believe me, by even allowing the idea, the museum team has proven themselves totally able to be purchased. This people would never find a job in any European institution as conservators.
Thks for the comments on Kim and Marilyn's very different lifestyles/ home life. As a long time MM fan I don't think a Kim would ever understand someone like a Marilyn, and I do agree that Marilyn wouldn't care who wore it. Kim would struggle if Marilyn were here today, since she was the absolute master of attention. Kim has a lot to learn...
"When Marilyn knew she'd be performing at President John F. Kennedy's birthday gala she contacted Louis and said, 'I want you to design a truly historical dress, a dazzling dress that's one of a kind.' She asked that it be a dress that, 'only Marilyn Monroe could wear,' " sounds to me like Marilyn most certainly would NOT have wanted someone else wearing that gown. That gown was conceived, designed, measured and created for one person and that person was Marilyn Monroe. It should never have been worn by anyone else.
yeah right? it literally said "white tie". i've never been to a fancy party in my life and even i know what that means. also, i just don't understand how you can have a chance to wear a tophat to an event and not use it.
Sebastian Stan wearing a hot pink modern sweats….it’s going to be a no for me. 😭🤚 Sorry for the Stans but you HAVE to admit that’s way out of theme THE WORST PART IS THAT THEY ALLOWED HIM TO WEAR IT.
The met gala could literally have a theme for example like “orange” and I can assure you that almost everyone or at least 80% of them will show up in blue and would then go on to saying “I wanted to be edgy.” Or make up some argument that blue is somehow related orange. Or just say “I don’t care for the theme.” Which like, why have a theme if you are not going to follow it.
I mean, blue is related to orange because they’re opposites on the color wheel, but that doesn’t mean people should wear it and deliberately ignore the theme. If you’re going to wear blue, do it in a nice contrasting way where you’ve still got some nice orange in there
One of by biggest issues with them letting Kim wear Marylin’s dress (aside from the obvious mishandling of the historical dress) is that the reason they let her wear the dress is because they kept saying that “Kim is the modern day Marilyn” which disregards EVERYTHING about Marylin: what she did for civil rights, how she was born into poverty, and how she was treated by the film industry. They just degrade her to how Hollywood saw her: a sex symbol and nothing more
the met gala is hilarious because it’s when celebrities are supposed to actually follow the theme and impress us and they have consistently failed for at that since 2018.
Marilyn literally stated she never wanted anyone else to wear the dress. The dress itself was made for Marilyn, she was sewn into the dress when she wore it. People get upset over her wearing this dress because of the ICONIC significance of it. This dress is part of American history, as is Marilyn. Kim is not even in the same league. Wearing it even five minutes damages the integrity of the dress. Debbie Reynolds was known as the Historian of Hollywood Costumes, she worked so hard to preserve these beautiful gowns. You mentioned Worth gowns, to me the history behind those gowns, the age should keep people from wearing them. It is so sad that there are rules set up about wearing museum pieces and that was not adhered to in this case. It just left a really bad taste in people's mouths.
@@LadySofia_Zamora WHAT? “an actress that was just pretty”??? marilyn had much more influence than being pretty!!!! your words are literally the reason why she wasn’t taken seriously! because everyone thought of her as stupid pretty girl! she was much more than her connection with kenedy also

@Díana Arcos You must be seriously stupid if you can just reduce Marilyn Monroe to “an actress and the second woman of the president.” Educate yourself on how important she was before you open your mouth, please. Right now you’re just contributing to the blatant sexism and objectification of women whilst actively diminishing their accomplishments.
18:06 The biggest issue now is that there is photographic proof that Kim irreparably damaged Marilyn’s dress. Multiple Swarovski beads and sequins were lost because they fell off during the fittings/red carpet, there was tearing and shredding near the hooks, the shoulder straps have been stretched out, there are multiple pulled seams; there’s also puckering around the zipper and the zipper itself was damaged. Bob Mackie himself has also went on record to emphatically state that the only person meant to wear that dress was Marilyn Monroe and that letting Kim wear it was “a big mistake.” There is no way to repair the dress, either. Kim has legitimately destroyed a huge piece of fashion history for no other reason than her egoism and privilege, on top of keeping a lock of her hair and joking about doing a “voodoo ritual” with it. I don’t agree with the people who used Kim wearing the dress to attack and degrade Kim as a woman, but I think it’s also off the mark to say people were overreacting. We can now see why some of those reactions were incredibly justified because of the state of the dress itself.
I completely agree. We aren’t attacking her for being a woman! We’re attacking her for being a woman that is blind to the significance of this dress because of her IMENSE wealth.
@@bauhausliker0 that's the best part... they did! She wore the original for five minutes and then changed into the replica. So although they had one, they still insisted on using the original dress as well.
The only take I don't agree with you is the Marilyn Monroe dress, she didn't want anyone to wear it. I'm not even a Marilyn fan but she had to be sown into the dress because it was perfectly fitted for her body, the colour was perfectly matched to her skin tone so that it would appear like she's naked and dripping in jewels. I don't care if Kim compares herself to Marilyn but she did this for her own vanity and not to pay homage. Also don't like that she starved herself to fit in it.
@@astridmthi7103 even if it wasn’t starving it’s horrible for your body and also a horrible message to spread that you must change yourself to fit into clothes.
The problem with Kim wearing Marilyn Monroes dress is that the historical value of this dress is that Marilyn was the last one to wear it, historical artifacts deserve to be protected.
I hate millionaires, they think they can allways do ANYTHING they want, just because they can afford it 🤬, just like two years olds 🙄🙄🙄. HOW the museum allowed her to do this???
That value DEFINITELY went down...Imagine if it got ripped up when she tried to squeeze in it. I'd how Kim is the same size as Marilyn if her size was from a different era.
As a museum professional, on the topic of the Marilyn Monroe dress, the museum and conservation community is up in arms about the the loaning of the dress to be physically worn. It is a delicate piece of material culture that absolutely should not have been worn, not even for five minutes. That's not saying anything about Kim K. it's about the fact that it's a 60 year old silk dress. Wearing it, especially in the way Kim did (in makeup, putting strain on seems and zipper, stepping on the hem climbing stairs, etc) , damages the dress and makes it harder to preserve the dress. Ripley's did not have strict procedures, if they did the dress would never have been loaned out like that. Seriously, Ripley's is in the museum doghouse right now for allowing this.
I fully agree, and I am questioning should items like this be sold at auction? If your establishment has the most money it does not mean it is the best place for this item. We know, if this dress was held at a Costume Institute it would be kept in a temperature regulated room, and rarely touched. Ripley's needs to stick to their gimmick and stay away from actual historically significant items.
@@juanam735 another fake news liar. Jesus, just make your comments truthful. She didn't damage the dress in that way. There's no proof she damaged it. The dress didn't fit so she kept it over her backside with a piece of lace. That's it. It didn't rip or get ripped. It stayed open and her bottom was hanging out so she covered herself with that coat. I'm not a KK fan but stop with lies you read. Read at least 3 sources before making outrageous comments. Such uneducated people
@@angevin6679 The dress is over 50 years old and it's silk..... even with attempting to protect it with the lace and having her butt hang out the dress was still probably damaged. It shouldn't have been on loan in the first place. I'm not bashing Kim for her body but they should have had a plan B for the dress or gone with a copy, and at the end of the day it wasn't on theme or even theme inspired.
I'm so glad to hear this, because I was wondering if this would set precedent where culturally relevant items that are old and delicate like this could now be "for sale" to be exploited by rich and famous people who want to use them to gain publicity and money.
In defense of Vanessa Hudgens, she combined Western Gilded Age and Philippines 1800 era to pay homage to her filipino roots, the intricate design on her chest was an inspiration of weaves usually worn by filipino women back in the era and the mini puffed sleeves was an inspiration from Filipiniana (National Costume). So overall her outfit was on theme.
@@babygirllss I disagree. I think Mina is a smart girl and I love every topic she discusses and I truly love listening to her. It’s just that in this topic she only focused on the relevance of the theme in western culture and didn’t consider the broad concept Vanessa possessed in her outfit.
Yeah, this is her first video I've seen but it seems her knowledge is pretty limited (no shade there bc everyone learns all the time) but it seems like she's missing some information that a simple Google search would have helped with. Not sure I'd watch any of her other stuff when others do the same with more research. Her outfit matching the theme is fun tho.
in mention of Marilyn Monroe's dress, i would like to also bring up that Emma Chamberlain's necklace that she wore at the met gala was the choker of Maharaja of Patiala which was very much stolen and has a big painful history to it. The jewels were literally stolen from Punjab and resurfaced in the Met Gala. I am dissapointed in the way Cartier gave a necklace with huge history and huge value to a youtuber as just an accessory.
This is factually incorrect. There has been a lot of misinformation going around regarding the Cartier choker. But the truth is that the choker worn by Emma isn't a stolen piece, it is a replica made by Cartier itself. The De Beers diamond necklace that y'all are referring to is different and its whereabouts is still unknown.
@@rosedawson1712 1) The necklace was reported missing in 1948 by the Patiala royal treasury. 2) The De Beers Dimond was a huge stone that sat in the middle of the necklace. The stone “re-appeared” in 1982 at an auction held by a Sotheby’s. There is a digital archive of a 1982 article talking abt this event. 3) Part of the necklace was bought by Cartier after it re-appeared in 1998. It was missing all of the other diamond and rubies which is what Cartier replaced with synthetic diamonds and other gems. The remaining pieces of the necklace is still supposedly missing but I think it’s still important to mention that part of the necklace is authentic. It’s also important to mention that when Maharaja of Patiala commissioned Cartier to make him a necklace, he provided all of the gemstones. So sure you can argue that there isn’t evidence to prove Cartier stole the necklace. But if your expensive ornaments went missing and I show up years later wearing part of it, how would you feel?
@@tiffanys358 I am definitely not supporting emma wearing the choker on the met gala - my point was to stop the spread of misconception around the choker that it's STOLEN/ COLONIZED. Albeit, I don't appreciate the choker being displayed at the met either.
To be fair I don’t think anyone should be wearing Marilyn’s dress. Not just for conservation but because I think it contributes to the dehumanized narrative around her, Marilyn wasn’t “the most American thing” she was a person
@@makaylaserniotti1474 Marilyn was a size 4/6 at her heaviest which was “thick” back then. But, like you mention, she didn’t seem to feel the need to alter her body or her weight too much. Kim’s fashion choice for the night seems to be grounded in her own hubris.
@@bodyofhope still, she could’ve just worn a copy for the whole day.her sweating and starving herself to wear a historical artefact not only is unhealthy but damages the dress a lot.
The Marilyn dress thing is not out of proportion. Museums have strict codes of conduct prohibiting EVER wearing the clothes. The amount of damage done to the dress is irreversible and for what?
There are a lot of really good arguments against Kim K wearing Marilyn's dress. My first thought was : what's the difference between the authentic dress and a well made copy? I mean literally Kim could have had this dress made for her by a team of professionnals. To the exact details bc she could have had the help of the museum and access to the original dress to get a perfect copy of it. This is so over the top. I know it's fashion and clothes are meant to be wear but imagine celebrities asking for original art pieces or music instruments just to make a statement. 5 minutes on the red carpet with flashes on im no expert but i dont think this is a proper way to treat an archive piece, the very thing the met gala is supposed to represents and fund.
The idea was off-theme, re-hashing looks we've seen Kim in (but this time done much worse), and disrespecting history and an icon. A replica dress would have salvaged the historical aspect, but it wouldn't have fixed the general tackiness and lack-of-fashion-awareness of the look. Kim already had a well-done recreation of Marilyn's nude/diamond-dripping moment when literal MUGLER came out of retirement to knock it out of the park at the 2021 MET. She's done that kind of custom look before, so how do you do a nude, diamond-embellished look that tops the custom piece Mugler already made for her? There's no way. She should have actually been on-theme and went a different direction. She didn't just disrespect Marilyn and make it so the last person to wear that dress will never again be this lost icon from history - she also disrespected herself and Mugler. She makes it clear she can't do actual high-fashion moments without Kanye or someone else more creatively-minded and on-pulse at the helm. Anna Wintour was right to deny them entry to the MET gala before they met Kanye ☠️
@@psychologistplays3370 Kim needs people in her life that tell her off when something is a bad idea. But look at her family, there is no hope. Besides, that it was totally off-theme, she could've gone for a replica, but that was not enough for her. The thing is, it will have no negative effect on her. She grew on controversy her whole life.
she actually did wear a replica for most of the night - the real thing was just for the carpet. so it was a meaningless stunt just for the sake of doing it. i detest the entire thing. poor marilyn
The thing that scares me the most about the Marilyn dress being loaned out, even for a short while, is that it sets a precedent that rich folks with clout can buy pieces of collective history from museums and possibly ruin them. Like, this time it was silk dress from the 60's, what if next time it's a Worth gown. I saw a video of the fitting with Kim and it made me cringe so bad, it's a 60 year old silk dress bro, that's delicate. Plus she was wearing stilettos with it and that could RUIN the hem if it got stepped on. Also the dress was supposed to be a nude effect and the shade was made to match Marilyn, not Kim, so it's too pale and makes it look tacky and strange. She also couldn't fit into it (she publicly said that she crash dieted to try to fit into it which is another oof) and so they had to tie the back of it and then she had that fur on to cover it up. They took a priceless piece of history and put it in jeopardy, for a theme that was for the LAST Met Gala, on a woman who pisses a lot of people off for justifiable reasons, and in the end it looked cheap and silly.
Sets a precedent? Girl, it's been happening for the majority of human history. If there's rich folks, they will buy/stral historical items and ruin them. Hell, they commission people to rewrite history in general.
@@shahariarhassan2831 You're right, they can! They've always been able to and that's not good because those kinds of things belong in museums. I was talking about museum pieces though, because if they're a museum piece then rich folks usually can't get a hold of them because there are things in place to stop that. Conservationists won't let them. But Ripley's is not a legit museum and were suuuuuper irresponsible with it and it's worrying because there are probably other garments that you would think would be in museums with strict regulations against loaning/wearing, but are in private collections or places like Ripley's where they may be mishandled. Mina's pinned a comment that linked a really helpful twitter thread by a fashion historian that has a bunch history on this and the ethics around it.
As an archivist Kim wearing Marilyn's dress literally makes me foam at the mouth because my brain cannot stop thinking about how she's straining the fabric and getting sweat on a historical artifact (also I fully agree with Dr. Chrisman-Campbell's thread that you linked). As a person with eyes I also think she looks really bad in it. The dress doesn't fit her and the nude illusion doesn't work because she has a different skin tone than Marilyn. If Kim wanted to do a Marilyn look (which she shouldn't have anyway bc it's off theme) she should've gotten a replica made that fit and matched her skin tone. As it is she looks like she's in a bad halloween costume.
Also hasnt Kim worn something really similar to a met gala before? Like, thinking of the idea behind Marilyn's dress (looking like she's naked dripping jewels), and then saying "Kim could've done a replica with her skin tone", she already did that didnt her? The look where she looked soaked in water? With the wet or wet-looking hair and everything?
@@LuneP yes, that's the Mugler dress for the Camp event at the MET Gala of 2019. What she did with the Mugler dress is what Marilyn intended with her Happy Birthday dress, the illusion of nakedness and sparkling skin.
'As a person with eyes' ahahahaha. It goes to show the dress doesn't make the woman, the woman makes the dress. There is no comparison between Marilyn and kim, this stunt made that absolutely clear; she lacks the class.
Yes!!! You took the words out of my mouth! When I saw her in the dress I didn’t even think it was the same dress just because it didn’t look like it on her. The dress was a whole different fit and it was just not made for her. I’m still upset she wore it. I just don’t think people should wear historical clothes or items be inspired of course but don’t just wear the actual items. Also, does the dress now loose value because it’s not just Marilyn’s dress anymore someone else wore it.
also apparently kim was still too big to fit into the original dress, so allegedly the fur coat was to cover the not-properly-closed back of the dress. and yes, marilyn would have probably cared, this dress was literally sculpted onto her body, it was meant to be worn by her and her alone but i'm mostly pissed off by the kardashian entitlement to historic pieces just bc they can afford it.
The thing about Kim wearing Marilyn's dress was that she literally admitted ON PUBLIC TELEVISION that she had STARVED berself for three weeks. Just to fit the dress. Which is something we should stop normalizing!! This is what encourages eating disorders and fuels insecurities. She cut off 16 pounds in three damn weeks just to wear a dress...for 5 minutes. Imagine the message that its sending towards her younger fans ://Abolish the stigma that we should "starve" ourselves just for the aesthetic
Absolutely. She said she didn’t starve herself, she just “would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and all carbs, and just eat the cleanest veggies and protein.” We all know that’s jargon for crash dieting. It’s not healthy to cut out all sugar and carbs, and it’s definitely not healthy to lose 16 pounds in three weeks to wear a dress for TEN MINUTES.
This. I came looking for this comment. The moment I saw the dress I thought just that she was going out of the theme which was not surprising at all, but then I heard she saying she (an already super skinny woman) went on an extreme diet to fit on the dress… I can’t stop thinking about the 2000s diet culture and how it affects me until this day, I really think it’s something we should leave in the past and not celebrate it putting on the red carpet of the met gala
And yet there's people who defend her on that! I didn't really care about her look for the Met Gala, but knowing what she did to fit into the dress for just 5 minutes really made me roll my eyes
Completely agree! If you watch all the videos of Kim being interviewed, she’s looking in the viewfinder holding her stomach in and covering her stomach with her hand (obviously because she’s self conscious about how her figure looks) and she just overall looks so uncomfortable and so exhausted. Was it really worth all the pain just to wear a dress for 5 minutes?!
I was so confused by this as I thought I had always heard that MM had a figure similar to the current day, average American woman size which would be like a 12-14. And isn't KK *very* petite besides her chest and rear? Did she just lose weight in those places??
I can't find the post that explained why Kim shouldn't have worn Marilyn's dress far better than I'm able to rn, but it had nothing to do w classiness and everything to do with what Marilyn represented as a woman who rose up from poverty, who supported marginalized people and who battled misogyny and body standards at every turn vs Kim, a rich woman who gets even richer and richer, who sells and promotes diet products to young girls who look up to her, who tells women who haven't been born rich to just work harder etc
Yhyh and It just feels icky to me, like there is no need for her to wear a dress of a dead person for 5 mins for photos and clicks- she could just wear an replica 😬
+1 People hated Marylin because she opposed racism and stood up for women, people dislike Kim Kardashian because she markets laxatives to children on insta
I don’t think Kim wearing that dress took any of that away. You’re attaching too much unnecessary meaning to it, making it into some kind of bad symbol but it’s not even that deep.
Not to mention her statements about starving herself to fit into Marilyn’s dress. Completely antithetical to everything Marilyn stands for. She kept the stoal on the whole time because she couldn’t fully zip up the dress.
I think I'm personally uncomfortable with Kim wearing Marilyn's dress because Marilyn was so outspoken about diet culture and eating disorders and Kim promoted disordered eating habits just to fit into the dress
Completely disagree about Kim. That was Marilyn Monroe's dress, it's a historical piece meant to be preserved. I don't care if it was 5 minutes, you shouldn't be able to take historical pieces out of a museum because you flash enough money.
exactly! 5 minutes for what - a piece of american history all to yourself? why could she not have referenced it or even recreated it... god knows she has the money.

I saw a thing on tik tok about Billie’s dress I think you’d like! Someone mentioned that the dress looked “arsenic green” which was popular during the Gilded Age and her gloves looked like the kind of skin condition you’d develop from arsenic poisoning.
Ooo that’s cool I saw someone say the colors aren’t matched cuz it’s reused fabric n cuz billie wanted to match exactly to historical dresses but I saw another comment say their idea of gilded glamour would be yo do a dress in the silk was soaked in some salt n it caused it to deteriorate or sum
These videos are so cathartic lol. It was painful seeing look after look come out and literally every single person disregarded the theme. You're telling me these people had the opportunity and all the resources in the world to dress up like a John Singer Sargent painting and they DIDN'T take it? It's infuriating!
I looked him up and his painting Lady Agnew of locknaw. Is a beautiful dress with gorgeous sleeves and purple sashed waist. Missed opportunity! They should have honored that period of time and the people that lived
omg now I'm thinking about the 'Lady Agnew of Lochnaw' painting and how I've wanted to see it in real life! It's not even a super crazy dress since so many of these celebrities want to be boring.
Yeah, they had a lot of ways to interpret “gilded glamour”…not only did a lot of them totally deviate from that theme, but they missed out on exploring a really beautiful era of dress.
Billie Eillish's dress was made from used scrap fabric, once I found that out I let the whole miss matching thing go because I'm not about to shame someone for understanding the assignment let me tell you that much. Out of everyone there Billie is surprisingly my north star. After last years met my expectations for her were raised significantly and I like how clear her style evolution is. I don't expect her to put out a look every time she leaves the house but we can clearly see that she has a lot of respect for the event and for the fashion industry all together and we can see her bring in her sense of self, morals and ideals into the planning room and just how much involvement she had in the making of this look. I can't wait to see what she wears next year.
@@ICrystalFox yeah but even though it was on theme it's still Gucci and they're knowns for weird pattern and colour combinations so it was expected from them tbh

Beading missing, fabric frayed and puckering, threads lose, the straps loose. THATS A WHOLE LOT OF DAMAGE! And for WHAT? to not fit the theme?
I use to work in archives centres, and the Kim K's dress choice pissed me off so much! I am convinced that if anyone else had asked for the dress they would have refused. The VERY point of the MET gala is to finance archives! Archives which--even ones with invaluable items--rarely get the financing they need. Some rich celebrity coming in with money they need and asking for outrageous things... I can guarantee there were archivist within that institution who hated this situation and objected. But when it's between allowing this stupidity and getting the financing you need to protect dozens of other historical documents, it's easy to accept shit that WILL damage items under your care. Because it's not just sweat from the person wearing the dress, it's also lights! Light is very damaging to old items, and the whole point of the red carpet is that you're getting dozens of cameras flashing at you. Conservation-wise this is a nightmare. Also, imo, Kim K's whole shtick seems to be appropriating stories of people who HAVE struggled. And this feels like more of the same, and I think it's gross, even beyond my archivist knee-jerk reaction of DON'T.
@@MsMcKat-ub4sm I wouldn't be surprised if that was true. I did some research since watching this video and Marilyn's dress was the most expensive dress ever sold at auction, I can't imagine the cost of insuring loaning it out to KK! According to Vogue, the dress is kept in a darkened vault--most archive and museum vaults are kept dark unless someone is actively working in them--so light is definitely not great for the dress (I wanted to make sure, because clothes conservation isn't my specialty). I mean, this is why some museum exhibit are in partial darkness with soft lights: it's to minimize damage to priceless documents. And something else I'd forgotten: temperature and humidity control. At least May isn't the warmest and most humid month, but it's Not Great. (Apparently the dress didn't fit originally. I don't understand why she didn't get a replica made. Or, you know, pick something on theme instead. The whole thing feels like a stunt, and is frustration on top of frustration. Can't wait to hear what my friends who work in museums have to say about this. whoof.)

As an archivist, thank you for writing this comment - I honestly just want to cry at the sheer amount of light damage and the pulling on the fibers and all of those skin cells reaking havoc.
i do have a big issue with kim wearing marilyn's dress but it's nothing to do with the content of their characters and everything to do with the fact that this is a historical garment that she's wearing (i know it was only for the red carpet, but kim still moved around and sweat in it, that still does cause damage), it's not on theme, it doesn't match her skin tone because it was made to match marilyns skin tone. and she changed into a replica anyway??? so if you're really so committed to this terrible not on theme idea why not just wear the replica instead?
Totally guilty of being a hardcore Marilyn Monroe stan😅 but just to show another perspective, I think a lot of people, including myself, took issue with the lengths Kim K went just to put on the dress. For instance, losing 16 pounds in 3 weeks just to put on a the dress for 5 minutes is very…concerning to say the least. The fact the she felt comfortable enough to promote that extreme weight loss is astounding. Also, seeing clips from behind the scenes on how the dress was handled was also glaring, they were rubbing on the dress trying to get Kim in and it seemed really careless. Also the fact that ripely gave Kim a piece of Marilyn’s HAIR to me demonstrates that they have no respect for this women. I think it’s just really sad to see Marilyn being commodified and objectified even after death, I just want the poor women to be able to Rest In Peace 😭
i 100% agree! there's also the whole symbolism and ethos that kim is trying to show off, choosing to wear such an important dress and struggling to fit into it as if she's trying to tell us that she is a modern day reincarnation of marilyn. there is definitely an ego issue here. her black balenciaga dress was also her way of asserting how iconic she already is.
The way they treated the dress while putting it on Kim was appalling! And since they couldn’t even close a huge part at the back why not just wear the copy and have it made to match her body and skin tone like they did with the original dress for Marilyn. It would have protected the historical dress from just unnecessary damage
The behind the scenes almost made me throw up. Kim has the audacity to say the dress was treated with such care then they literally shared the video of them treating it like that JUST TO TRY IT ON. So don’t sit here and say you didn’t ruin, or at least somewhat mar, the dress 🙄
Considering the Gilded Age was built off the backs of the poor, working, and immigrant classes, the Nouveau-Riche would have had nothing if not for them. How else could the Glided Age have been so glided!?! Kudos to Riz Ahmed.
Thank you! I was surprised that Mina didn’t stress this in the video. The Gilded Age was a poorly chosen theme to begin with, considering the time we’re living in.
Exactly! Like for my exam last year we had to write an essay on the gilded age and pretty much how terrible it was for so many people. To have this theme in a place like the met gala is so wild to me, and I'm very surprised Riz Ahmed was one of the only ones to go in that direction.
Kim wearing Marilyn's dress bothered me on two levels: First from the conservation angle, I really don't believe it was in the best interest of the conservation of the piece. Putting stress on those seams, the friction of movement, body sweat and oils, and the necessary washing of the dress that is now going to have to be done could all contribute to damages to it. Secondly, Marilyn commissioned that dress with a vision in mind. She wanted to make a statement about her own individuality and autonomy. She wanted "a dress only Marilyn Monroe could wear". I just don't think it's very respectful of her intentions or desires for someone else to be allowed to wear that dress. She had her agency stripped from her in so many ways while she was alive and her image has been used over and over for the gain of others after her death, I feel like we could have left her this one thing.
They gifted a piece (literally and figuratively) of a dead woman that was commodified and exploited her entire life to a woman that is the epitome of extreme consumerist exploitation and billionaires affluenza.
Ummm, first of all. Marilyn would be celebrating Kim. Regardless. She wasn't a nasty person who only wanted a dress for herself. I know Marilyn's history very extensively. She was the kind of person who would take the shirt off her back to help someone... Marilyn was a kind soul, that went through hell and back. I relate to her alot because our lives are very similar. Especially our childhoods. I think you just have a bias AGAINST Kim. While I agree, she looked terrible in it. It didn't fit her and she could've looked better. I believe Marilyn would be looking down in awe that people still remember her and hold her close to their hearts.
exactly, these designers I'm sure have a lot of creativity but we see nothing of it during Met Galas now, it's so hard for celebs to follow the theme just once
Kim didn't even fit the dress, that's why she had the jacket, it was covering up the opening on her bum. Plus Marilyn described the dress in the request for it's making as "something only Marilyn Monroe could wear". It clearly meant something to her. The way they also gifted a piece of HER HAIR is also just so unbelievable.
They gifted a piece (literally and figuratively) of a dead woman that was commodified and exploited her entire life to a woman that is the epitome of extreme consumerist exploitation and affluenza.
I'm just here to cosign everything in this comment thread. I'm sorry Kim, but when you can't even get in the dress just accept it's not meant for you. Stop trying to step sister smash your way into Cinderella's glass slipper.
I disagree with the Kim one. The whole point with Marilyns dress when it was made for her was that she would be the last to wearing it. Also, the dress wasnt Even from the gilded age
I disagreed when you said "I don't think Marilyn would have cared". She would have cared. There are quotes of her saying she wanted this to be a dress only she could wear. I agree that those tweets about Kim were extremely rude, but I still think it was disrespectful of her to wear the dress, because it directly went against Marilyn's wishes.
Okay I love Marilyn and I am a huge fan of her but sadly a lot of things went against her wishes. For example her murder, miscarriages and exploitive people around her all went against her wishes, she never even got peace even after she passed away and her adjacent gave was bought by hefner who exploited her. I don’t understand why Kim wearing her dress is worse than any of those things
@@rosie6 Nobodies saying that this is the worse thing that happened to Marilyn. But it still is pretty distasteful and it does go directly against her wishes. Let the woman rest for once.
Kim wearing the Marilyn dress was wrong on many levels, none of which are "Kim is too trashy while Marilyn was classy", which is..... gross to say the least. The dress is an actual historical artifact and not a Halloween costume; Kim had to go through extremely fast and unhealthy weight loss to even fit in the dress in the first place; and even when she did, the dress looks weird on her because it was made for Marilyn's skintone so the "nude" part of wearing a nude dress went out the window immediately. Not to mention how weirdly she styled it and made it look like a bejewelled nightie. If Kim really wanted to, she could've worked with a designer and paid tribute to the dress by commissioning a piece that would've fit HER perfectly, like the dress fit Marilyn. She only arranged to wear *that * dress as a flex, because she could.
THANK YOU. That dress belongs in a museum, it belongs to everyone as an artifact- not a fun costume for rich people to wear. If Kim's going to do that, other people will want to do it too until the dress falls apart. And it's just so gross to treat Marilyn like some accessory that you can put on, she was a human being who deserves acknowledgement and respect. She was so much more than just singing Happy Birthday to JFK. I don't understand how her losing weight at an extremely unsafe pace in order to fit into the dress somehow makes this better?
And, the dress isn't from the gilded age, so it's not really on theme. Kim has worn better naked dresses before, that actually fit her perfectly, if that's what she wanted. This dress was just a wrong move
Rihanna with her "naked diamond" dress some years ago was the perfect reference to this dress. Jfc why not so smth like that? But yeah ofc, what about Miss Kim's need for attention and the unscrupulous notoriety seekers who let her wear it.
Something I haven’t seen mentioned is that Marilyn had to be sewn into the dress. Maybe if KK had worn undergarments from the 50s, it would’ve changed the silhouette a bit but it looked like a regular dress. It didn’t look special and it was irrelevant to the theme.
Everyone’s talking about Kim K and the glamour; but the one that stood out to me was the man dressed as a worker. Not only were immigrants poor but the majority of citizens. The only food there should’ve been is bread to reminisce on how a majority of people lived
not to mention the gilded age saw a rise in class differences: the rich became richer and richer and the poor became poorer. it also saw a rise in unions.
I've heard countless conservators and curators say that wearing the dress was irresponsible and goes against international museum ethics. So yes, it's kind of a big deal
I just wanted to add that Emma Chamberlain's choker is the Maharaja of Patalia's Cartier Diamond choker. While this isn't Emma's fault as she's a Cartier ambassador she shouldn't have been wearing this. This should have been returned to the Sikh populations in India. This belongs to India and shouldn't be strutted out as if it was just a fashion statement. There's nothing that highlights the inequality of the Gilded Age more than wearing jewels that belong to colonized peoples (i mean she was on theme so slay ig....) But white people showing off jewels that they stole from colonized lands continued to today is disappointing. The fact that Indian jewels are being held in the British crown jewel office, the fact that all of the resources that powered the gilded age were from exploited lands, the fact that we (I say we as I'm Punjabi) still aren't in possession of jewels that belonged to us shows colonialism's everlasting impact. It's so normalized and makes me realize that the jewelry industry not only used to be exploitative but continues to normalize use of colonized land's resources.
From what I know, the choker wasn’t the original worn and the jewel mentioned is still missing... Also, that leader commissioned multiple pieces by Cartier and much like a sample is sewn up in fashion, there was likely a backup of the chain at the Cartier archives with other doubles of notable works.
@@AE-ld9ck I think that most people are upset because the necklace went missing, then when it was found Cartier bought the necklace and instead of returning it to India has since exhibited it. The choker is made from remnants of the necklace but the De Beers diamond (which is from South Africa) was sold at an auction. I don't think its a replica and is in fact the choker is made of the original necklace. I could be wrong though, so feel free to correct me.
my problem with kim wearing marilyns dress come in about three points: 1. kim hasn't done half of what marilyn has for women and minorities and created an ethical business like marilyn did(she became the second woman in US history to own a production company. she also helped ella fitzgerald, one of the best singers in US history in my opinion, to jumpestart her career. kim has done none of this). I am not saying kim is inherently a bad person, but she has been involved in a lot of bad business and ethical scandals and has exploited others to benefit herself on top of already being rich when she was born. 2. kim had to literally starve herself to fit into the dress only to wear it for five minutes. this sends an incredibly dangerous message to young girls and women about what you need to do to feel beautiful and worthy of appreciation from others. this promotes eating disorders and terrible beauty ideals. 3. IT WASN'T EVEN ON THEME!!!!!! if theres is truly anything to be upset about, she didn't even come close to the theme and that really upsets me. she has the money to do something right for these events and she never does. and if you aren't going to be on theme, then commit 100% to the theme you're doing yourself. go all out with the hair and makeup, and she also didn't do that. so those are my thoughts, you can disagree if you like and thats your prerogative. i won't force others to believe in my opinion but i still want to put my two cents in because i think some of these things should be talked about. i agree that I don't think marilyn would've been upset about her wearing the dress, but she probably would've been upset that kim had to legitimately starve herself in order to fit into it and then still not have it fit perfectly. EDIT: i've seen others quote marilyn syaing that she didn't want anyone else to wear this dress, to have it specifically designed for her. so this is a huge sign of disrespect that marilyns wishes still aren't being respected especially after she has passed and can't even say anything about it or stop it. that makes me even more upset about the whole thing.
I know some high school girls doing the same thing but for their prom dresses ... 17 year old girls. Not a great message to be sending. Especially since there was literally a duplicate dress made for Kim to wear later. Rather than pulling a publicity stunt by wearing an ill fitted, vintage, historically significant garment, she should have just paid homage and had a new dress made for her that matched her skin tone and had the same effect. (Not that this was remotely on theme, which just makes the whole thing pointless to begin with.)
This comment should have WAY more likes!! I really did not like Mina’s critique about the criticism of Kim and drawing an outlandish comparison to the narrative around Kim K vs Marilyn. That comparison isn’t even apples and oranges…it’s apples and broccoli.
Aren’t the creators of this event embarrassed that they have a theme each year and nobody bothers following it? It would literally have me PISSSSSSED if I threw a party and nobody cared to dress according to the theme. The audacity! The Met is losing our respect and it’s prestige.
From what I've heard Anna Wintour doesn't really decide the themes. It's the MET committee who decides, she's just the face or she's presiding over the event. But like yeah can anyone tell Anne to atleast screen the looks a little bit?
@@peteartieda58 Apparently she does! That's the infuriating this about it - she knows exactly how NOT on theme every single person is and does seem to care..... or they're just taking what they can get
@@herefortheshrimp1469 the info about the whole event is so conflicting so we can't point fingers whose to blame for the shenanigans that happens. But still even if Anna isn't 100% incharge or making the decisions. She's the face for the whole thing she's supposed to be who everyone follows.
If the host doesn't have an issue why does everyone not invited have a problem with this? And that's why the plebs are not invited lol. It's a fashion gala first and foremost. Met is losing prestige? Since the beginning of the Met models have been wearing slinky dresses not on theme. It's exactly as it always was.
Marilyn Monroe literally said "I want this dress to be a dress only Maralyn can wear." Not only that, but they damaged the dress, which is old and should be preserved. We would take issue with ANYONE disrespecting and wearing that dress. Having said that, someone who was born rich and faked her curves (the pure opposite of Marilyn) was truly spitting on her while legacy.
Nicola Coughlan nailed her outfit and I feel like her being in a period drama probably helped her be more aware of fashion trends in different time periods. You can tell she did her research and didn't just google "vintage dress" and put that on
I think it was a nod to Marilyn's "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" outfit, but done with Gilded Age elements like the big structured skirt and poofy/long sleeves. Sis said, "I'll hit the exhibit AND event themes" lol. I haven't heard many people gushing over it either but I loved it!
My biggest problem with Kim Kardashian wearing Marilyn's dress, aside from the historical value the dress has, is that it is yet another way to completely disregard every wish Marilyn had for her belongings to go to her closest friends and loved ones, it keeps selling Marilyn as an object and a "sex symbol" the way hollywood always forced her to be, it gets worse with dumb people going "kim k is the modern day marilyn" when they have no point of comparison aside from the hypersexualization of both EDIT: Just so you know, I will not reply to more people here. No, there is no comparison between the two, Marilyn Monroe lived in poverty before being famous and did what she thought she had to in order to earn money and survive, mantained her beliefs and support for those underprivileged and was and is STILL treated to this day as an object, a fictional character fabricated to sell Norma Jeane for just her looks, to the point where they give pieces of her as souvenirs. Using her image as decoration and her grave as a tourist stop. Not even in death has she found peace and her belongings and possessions being sold, auctioned and loaned like this is just another way of cutting her ghost in pieces and selling her to the highest bidder. Is wrong. It goes against her wishes, and it disrespects her memory. That's all, I am not attacking anyone, I am just saying that it is wrong.
No one forced her to. SHe did almost nude modeling before she got famous, only took sexy roles, willingly posed sexually and publicly had affairs. No one forced her to, she wasnt a innocent victim like you guys romanticize her out to be.
Also, unlike what Mina said, this was not okay for the dress from a conservation perspective because fabric is super sensitive to light, especially post industralisation fabric, so those flashes probably aged the dress by 10 years in those 5 minutes, as well as soiled it enough to require washing, which is strenuous on any piece
@@jahudgens5344 yeah, Ripley's believe it or not owns it, but "marilyn's friends" did not sell it, most of her belongings after her death were sold and auctioned by the orders of Anna Strasberg
I'm sad you didn't talk about Quannah Rose's look. Her look resonated deeply with our community as it represented the resilience of Indigenous communities during the Gilded Era. We were meant to be erased but here is Quannah standing tall and walking beautifully adorning Indigenous jewelry.
It was disappointing to see how she was barely noticed at last years met as well. I just found it so exciting to see such a proud indigenous woman attend a huge event like this. Her looks have been absolutely stunning thus far!
also another reason that I dislike Kim K wearing the marilyn's drees is that it looks SO PLAIN. the dress was cut to fit marilyn's curves perfectly, so what's the point of using the same dress if it's OBVIOUSLY not meant to look good on you? marylin also looked so confident and free in the pictures, the fact that she looks naked and had this GLOW about her personality and the way she moved made the look perfect. Kim could've EASILY made a copy that would fit her body nicely and make the dress more interesting to look at. she wore it with no magic, no personality, starving herself and the dress had a completely weird and stiff shape. she didn't even look happy or confident. so afar from everything marilyn did to make this dress so incredibly unique! if you're gonna copy something do it properly!
Exactly. Marilyn wore nothing underneath the dress, that’s why it oozes sensuality and gives the “naked” effect. Kim wore her shapewear which defeated the whole purpose of seeing natural body lines, rolls, and wrinkles
@@brcsephina not to mention that the fabric of the dress had, according to a comment I've seen on twitter, the same skin tone as Marilyn herself, so this gives off the illusion that her body is covered in nothing but diamonds.
@@VIXXlight_VIXXComeBack yes! it washed kim out because of this. if she wore something like her met gala look from 2019 i think it would be better received
I have a problem with Kim wearing Marilyn’s dress because knowing that the last person to wear it wasn’t Marilyn anymore feels really wrong. Marilyn deserves to have this dress commemorated for her and her alone. Kim isn’t anything like Marilyn and it shows that once again, as long as you have enough money, you can do whatever you want
I chose to believe that within the grand metaphysical scheme of things, K. wearing Marilyn's dress doesn't count. The collective disapproval from so many people is powerful enough in my eyes to burn this act out of reality. Marilyn was and always will be the last person to wear that dress. I chose that reality. K. will never ever ever come even close to eclipsing Marilyn's legacy of icon and fame. Never.
What gave the dress it’s value was because Marilyn was the last person to wear it. Now it’s Kim...🤦♀️ it’s like if someone opened the packaging of a collectible item😳
what really annoys me is the fact that the dress isn't even worth less money after she wore it. now its worth 5 million more dollars than it was before 😒 and i saw an article saying "kim kardashian visits HER marilyn monroe birthday dress" and its not even kims dress. like just because kim spent a bunch of money to wear that dress doesn't make it hers 🙄
Hats were LITERALLY the cherry on top of women's fashion during the time, and then lack of hats and theme is terrible.....How are these fashion designers/stylists, even called fashion designers/stylists when they can't even follow A SIMPLE THEME....They literally just went, "Oh, let me just Google vintage fashion and boom they you go" ...How tf Kim fit that dress?? I don't believe that at all and it's literally a different size from a different era. Let's not forget Sebastian Stan in his "A pimp named Highlighter" outfit.....Oh, another honorable mention Rhada Blank Edit: my question about this Kim thing was answered by only 2 people with class and respect, I got it, so don't tell my about it lol and it literally wasn't her size so yea...
You’ve made two comments now about different sizes from a different era - unsure if you’re incredibly dense but women’s measurements haven’t changed drastically in the last 75 years. Vanity sizing is certainly a thing but if a garment was say an 8 in 1950 and is now a 0 the same sized woman would fit it regardless. Marilyn and Kim have a similar hip to waist ratio (at least pre surgery for Kim) they both have teensy waists and are famous for their hourglass figures. Them having similar measurements would not be shocking.
@@QTpatootie95 funny you say that. Kim's butt is larger than Marilyn's that they had to lace the part of the zipper that it wasn't able to close 🤣 th-cam.com/video/opBZyEu6eBs/w-d-xo.html
19:14 oh hell no. Marilyn specifically said when this dress was being designed that she wanted it to be a dress that 'only Marilyn Monroe could wear'. She would've definitely minded.
When Marilyn asked Jean Louis to design the dress she told him "I want you to design a truly historical dress, a dazzling dress thats one of a kind, a dress that only Marilyn Monroe could wear." I believe thats why people have been triggered by Kim wearing it since it's a bit disrespectful to her legacy and Marilyn's original intent/wishes when creating this piece. It's no longer Marilyn's dress, but 'Marilyn's dress that Kim Kardashian wore'.
@@Emma88178For sure, and the museum should answer to that. I’m just saying no one will be remembering the dress as “Marilyn’s dress that Kim Kardashian wore”
@@user-ql3el3bq2v the last person to wear the dress will never, ever be Marilyn Monroe again. You can argue she will always have worn it at one point, but it has changed irrevocably.
@@psychologistplays3370 That’s not my point? No, we won’t be able to say Marilyn was the *only* one to wear the dress. But in 10 years, the dress will still be remembered as *Marilyn’s dress*, as it always has, because that’s what made it special in the first place. All this outrage will be long over by then and Kim having worn it will be an insignificant afterthought.
I'm 100% sure that people already pointed it out but every comment is engagement so: It appears Kim had to wear the fur shawl to hide the fact that even after her torturous weight loss regiment a zipper wouldn't fully close without stretching the dress. All of this seems so extreme just for a look that's not on theme.
I think there is another beautiful historical aspect to Billie Eilish's dress: the number of women at the time who would use fabric from dresses in outdated silhouettes to make new gowns. Not only is this ethical, but it feels in keeping with the era.
yes omg! i think it might have been mina (not sure) that mentioned that keira knightlys dress in p&p was very accurate with the pleats bc it looks like the skirt and waistline was just redone from an old dress. gave the same vibes :)
My issue with Kim K wearing Marilyn’s dress isn’t that Kim is “vulgar”. I think that we’re in a time where we’re past that, or should be. I don’t like it because Marilyn Monroe was a kind person who tried to do her best to come up from nothing, got disrespected and taken advantage of by the world most of her adult life, then died young. Kim K is a rich lady who was born rich and, while disrespected herself, she also puts down and disrespects other women by saying we need to “work harder” and stop being so poor.
@@kitvicious And they even gave her a piece of Marilyns hair, that chocked me honestly. How are they going around giving hair from Marilyn to someone who has nothing to do with Marilyn, only because she's rich and famous. And I also heard that keeping hair from a dead person that was Jewish is very disrespectful.
@@aspannas igergghfehdfiughdfvhgefngjffien that’s so annoying it HURTS!! There are literally more people who really are fan of Marilyn that deserved all that Kim got waaaay more. Apparently Marilyn herself said she wanted the dress to be historical and only a dress Marilyn would wear. I don’t agree with the hate with which Kim is getting, however I don’t agree with her wearing the dress. I think a replica would have a been a better option. Also… IT WASN’T ON THEME!!!!!! WHAT’S WITH FOREGOING THE THEME!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s very Gilded Age™️ for the ultra rich to have the audacity to destroy pieces of cultural significance for their benefit alone. The description given in the video didn’t give enough historical context for me. The entire theme is completely wild given the current social, economic and political climate. Everyone imo no matter what they wore fit the theme- a huge element of the gilded age was the ultra rich flaunting their wealth for the tabloids and saying nothing and doing nothing for anyone fighting for equality. I get that dressing in a theme has been a huge part of the Met Gala, but being on the carpet at an ultra exclusive fundraising party is enough for me 😂
i think the worst part of it all is that they *did* make a replica. one that kim wore for the majority of the night! so there was no reason for her to have worn the original.
Kim absolutely deserves all the hate she has been getting. She knew what she was doing when she was putting on this dress. She knew she was too big for it and that she would stretch Marilyn's dress, yet she went through with all of it anyway.
It’s not that it was Kim wearing the Monroe dress, it’s that ANYONE wore it! Ask a conservationist, it did damage to a one of a kind, historic, iconic dress that is extremely delicate. They don’t use cotton gloves, they use latex gloves. You could see her team stretching the dress over her ass. That’s damage. The most expensive dress in the world needs to be in the Smithsonian or equal museum.
I was watching Hailey Biebers “met gala vlog” and what surprised me was that she said that she chose her outfit to wear months before even knowing the theme .which makes sense why no one is ever in theme
I think the root of a lot of peoples’ frustration about Kim wearing the dress is that super rich celebrities can do whatever they want, even if it’s destructive. The dress is probably fine, but it would be a shame if it had been damaged. Her styling probably would have been better if she just wore the replica instead
Kim definitely lowered the value of that dress by wearing it. The dress had high value because Marylin Monroe was the last person to wear it but now it's a second hand dress.
@@RandomSwiftie13 yeah, I wouldn't doubt it. It's so strange that any of this was allowed, but I guess even a museum is willing to sell its soul for some money and publicity these days.
I'm sorry to say this but any exposure to light above 50 lux (so literally a dark closet) is inherently damaging to all fabric and especially anything made after the industrial revolution because synthetic dyes are incredibly sensitive to light. So yeah, the dress aged 10 years, got soiled and might have even ripped considering KKs ass didn't fit into the dress
Kim Kardashian did damage the dress though. Even with a painstaking routine of weight loss. I just don't see why she had to have the actual historical piece, she chould have accomplished it just fine in the replica. Hateful comments are unnecessary but so was her wearing and damaging the dress. Not worth it.
A lot of the dresses/outfits were really lovely, they just weren't on theme. Blake Lively's dress really would've been great LAST year, with its Lady Liberty theme. A few felt spot on, but yeah, several missed the mark so hard they clearly weren't even aiming.
A lot of them just look like the standard red carpet event type dresses. The type that Khloe had on. Sparkly and designer. What a waste of a great opportunity to showcase art.
blake's dress was based on the architecture of the guilded age so it is on theme since the theme did not specify what part of the gilded age it should be about
I would love to see common folk artists/designers on social media do their own interpretations of the met gala themes every year! I do see people create their own makeup looks or closet cosplay every year, and I’m always in awe of peoples creativity. It would just make me happy to see creators create at home since most of us will never be invited to this kind of event - additionally, if high fashion designers aren’t going to follow the theme, I’d prefer to see what smaller creators think up.
Same, I made a similar comment. These high-end brands, to me, aren't giving, and I believe they are living off just the name. The independent/fashion designers would make heads turn.
This would be fantastic and I love the idea! If a bunch of people could all get on board and do it we could buck the gala and have a real fashion show to really showcase individuals with talent, not just celebrities dressed up in whatever.
I dont have a problem with kim wearing it but it being worn. Marylin was such an iconic woman and her story is such a tragic one. No one would dare loaning out selenas bell bottom jumpsuit
Exactly and that makes me judge Kim for doing it honestly, her using Marilyn's iconic dress for a public stunt, to get attention. Like do a homage to her if you actually respect her, she could have worn the replica the whole time, but that obviously wouldn't given as much publicity.
That's my problem as well, what kind of trend is this starting? Are people going to be wearing Frida Kahlo's corsets and skirts now? Are we just raiding the dead's wardrobes for clout? It's disgusting.

Most of what she has to say is in terms of the theme which is literally the only thing these celebrities have to follow for this event. it might come off as if she's being too critical because her comments are very specific but that's only because she understands the history in depth. A few google searches could easily educate these celebs on how they should dress. Mina did have very detailed comments even on those who followed the theme but that's because that's literally what she does. this is a FASHION channel, you cant expect her to vaguely congratulate those who she thinks did well and then bash others without an explanation behind her thinking. it's not talking for the sake of having something to say if what you're saying has thought behind it.
Kim wore that jacket to hide the back of the dress. She couldn’t zip it up. It makes sense bc surgery has permanently changed her measurements. She claims that she went on a diet to fit into the dress but no diet could allow her to fit the dress. (Also, I wish that we could end the crash diet for big events narrative) Once she was done posing, she changed into a replica dress that fit for the rest of the event.
Crash diets are the worst. Some women do them for their weddings but models and actors have to do them all the time. We as a society can handle seeing some fat and water weight on screen. It's fine. Just let people eat a normal, healthy diet

I know i'm suuuper late to the party but I also want to point out my issue with the whole Kim K wearing Marilyn's dress thing. As someone who just graduated from studying art in college and who has a deep relationship to art, culture, history and their preservation, what Kim did is utterly disrespectful not just to Marilyn (which in my opinion should be enough of a reason to not let her wear the dress. Marilyn was disrespected through her whole life and she keeps getting disrespected on death) but to everyone in general. It just shows that if you have enough money to destroy or irreparably damage an artistic/historical/cultural piece, as long as the owner (be it a person or a institution) can make profit off you damaging it, they'll let you do it. Even if by any chance Kim hadn't damaged it so badly it would still be outrageous as a demonstration that even the sole risk of destroying a historical dress is not that big of a deal if you can afford it. It also made me tremendously sad and angry because fashion pieces are VERY FRAGILE, and fabric is a material that deteriorates VERY QUICKLY, so its preservation is really, REALLY difficult. Tho I do not, by any means, justify the disgusting misogynistic comments I saw during those weeks, Kim deserved to be criticized for what she did. If she wanted to honor Marilyn so badly, instead of paying to wear the dress for 10 minutes and destroying it in the meantime, she could've simply worn the replica since the beginning. That would have been a much more beautiful way of honoring her, because paying your way into destroying Marilyn's (material) heritage is a very poor way of showing any respect for her. With all due respect, the dress not being on theme is the least of the issues in this situation.
Blake's dress is on theme because the statue of liberty was built during the gilded age and it was copper at first then it turned green as time went by. As we see her transform from a copper dress to a green one. In my opinion it's a great reference.
True but the silloette of the dress itself is too modern to be considered gilded or even inspired by the time period. It was more of a 1920s Art Deco type of silloette.
@@NinaWTF the initial silhouette is very much gilded age, and then transforms into a modern one. It's a mix of modern and gilded age. It's the whole take of the dress, past into present.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Emma Chamberlin's necklace! From what I've heard, it was actually stolen from the Maharaj of Patiala, or at the very least is a replica of the stolen necklace which felt very weirdly on theme and not in a good way, in terms of an influencer wearing the stolen wealth of a nation that was historically oppressed by the ruling classes of Great Britain.
@Rania Kahn Or she could've... I don't know... simply not known? It's 2023, we're over assuming people have bad intentions because they don't know something.
The fact that rumors are swirling that next year Anna has to approve *everyone’s* outfits to ensure they’re on theme says volumes (if it turns out to be true) about how off track so many designers/celebs have been
Anna has heinous fashion sense and she NEVER, EVER follows the theme. Just wears the same boring, disgusting Chanel outfits year after year. And no one with that awful hair cut should be allowed to control anyone's outfits ever.
I feel like part of the problem is that every celeb/designer feels a need to stand out and do something super crazy. By doing so, they all end up interpretating the theme super loosely or ignoring it altogether. If a few people did this while everyone else followed the theme it would spice the gala up a bit, but, when everyone does it, the gala becomes a mess and no one looks like they belong at the same event. Honestly,. I think that sticking with the theme but interpreting it in a unique way is a much greater show of creativity and talent than it is to ignore the theme and do whatever they want.
I personally don’t care about the historical relevance of the Monroe dress. My main issues were, - It’s not on theme! - It lacks innovation. Every year I think about what amazing looks we could see if celebrities took a risk on up and coming fashion designers instead we get retreads of past looks. - I feel like Kim’s 2019 met gala was her version of this dress. Nude illusion, highlighting the crystals, fit her like a glove. The Monroe dress doesn’t work on her, it’s not the right size and it doesn’t match her skin tone. It looks like a plain beige dress with some rhinestones
Thanks. I didn't know it was the Monroe dress. I just wondered why she wore something that was clearly meant to look "nude" when it didn't compliment her skin tone and didn't seem to fit perfectly either. It was a very uninspiring dress for the occasion too, we've seen her wearing similar concepts a thousand times on events with less historical fashion impact. That it was Monroe's was a surprise to me. I guess Marilyn's persona really made the dress (like how Google Images was born thanks to J-Lo even though she was wearing a dress that had been worn by many celebrities before her). Placed in that specific era, it also carried much more shock value than it does now, which is why people remember it so specifically.
I’ve hated how kim made the dress do all of the heavy lifting to create a moment. she should’ve pulled off a Rihanna with her tribute to Josephine Baker crystal dress. it would’ve been very iconic
It is on theme. The theme was America Anthology of Fashion, hence why it's part two of last year's met gala. White tie gilded glamor is the dress code. People keep misunderstanding it.
My "conspiracy theory" is that many celebrities and designers weren't well communicated with considering the theme. Many thought the theme was the exhibit, which was a part two basically to America: a lexicon of fashion. This is why Maude apatow said her inspiration was old Hollywood, and why kim Kardashian wore a literal Marilyn Monroe dress, and why her mother said that she was inspired by Jackie Kennedy, and why Hailey Bieber wore a look that was also old Hollywood, and why Janelle monae was inspired by 1930s fashion, and much more examples. Plus, the title of the theme, "Gilded Glamour", does not directly say that the theme is the gilded age although one can infer that. I could see someone thinking that the theme was just to be shiny and sparkly, which many celebrities did just wear something shiny and sparkly. To hide this miscommunication, many celebrities said that their inspiration was the opulence of the gilded age, like Hailey beiber said in her interview at the met gala if I can remember correctly, even through it is just shiny and sparkly. Also, a few celebrities mentioned that their look was made in only a few weeks or right before the gala, which makes me think that a miscommunication happened between the met and the designers
@@jade-fm4no The people you hear about are probably the ones that _want_ you to know how much work went into their look. You don’t hear much about the low-effort celebs because they probably don’t care to talk about their look, and are there just for the party. The point I’m trying to make, though, is that showing up to the MET Gala with a last minute outfit isn’t unheard of, and it happens every year. I mean, just look at the majority of men in attendance.
My conspiracy theory is that they thought it was just glamorous America and didn't realise gilded glamour is refering to the age in American history cuz none of them finished school
I adore this video (and you) but I completely disagree with your take on the Kim dress situation. Sure, yes, at the end of the day it's just a dress/material item, one of hundreds Marilyn wore, and it's a item that was handled with care by the team. However, Kim is a billionaire. We cannot even comprehend having the immense wealth and access to power she (and other billionaires) have. And she is a billionaire who is directly responsible for Skims (under Cherry Intimates Ltd.) which did NOT sign the extremely crucial Bangladesh Accord but is using an Accord factory (freeloading off the accord) and not paying single dollar to ensure her worker's safety. And it's been a well known fact in the industry for over a decade now that the Kardashian's have used slave labour (I'm talking Chinese youth working over 80 hours a week for around a $1 an hour to create their old shitty shoes). Let's not forget Khloe and Kylie directly stealing designs from black creators. I'm so tired of people being so protective but yet also dismissive to the actions of billionaires. The kind of wealth where they can afford to pay EVERY SINGLE WORKER a more-than above average wage and STILL be billionaires/multi-millionaires. No single family deserves hoarding that much wealth. Kim directly benefits from the garment industry being as destructive as it is for both it's workers and the environment. Also, I'ma stand up for my girl Marilyn. Sure she was from humble beginnings and dealt with severe mental health (that went unchecked and minimized) but if she were still alive today she'd know, learn, and see what a god damn icon she has become and that some Kardashian-definitely-not-self-made-but-they-can-keep-trying-to-claim-that billionaire definitely does NOT need to be wearing one of her own custom, iconic dresses complete with a shoddy bleach job to boot.
no, bc i am SO convinced i could have crushed this year's met gala. my outfit motif would be inherent vice: in historical clothing preservation, "inherent vice" is when flaws with the materials of a garment or its construction cause it to prematurely decay. this is especially prevalent in gilded age clothing due to their use of weighted silks. in the gilded age, silk was sold by weight, not by yard, so merchants would soak the material in alkali salt, which would let them sell less silk for more money (capitalism corrupts), but the alkali salts would cause the garment to deeply deteriorate over time. i would have worn a dress inspired by an exhibit i saw at the RISD museum on inherent vice while on vacation with some friends of mine. i would also make it fun and sexy by using the "decay" of the garment to incorporate sheer materials and strategic rips. the dress would be a metaphor for the "inherent vice" of the gilded age, which was outwardly opulent but inwardly a rotting pit of human rights violations, and indeed for america itself, which is built on the inherent vices of slavery and genocide. the idea is so obvious i can only assume that no one thought of it because no celebrities saw the RISD exhibit because, as is equally obvious, rich people do not go to providence rhode island for vacation.
That’s pretty similar to my idea- great minds think alike. I would have gone for a second bustle era silhouette, with glimpses through to the rotten foundations, in this case a lobster tail, petticoat and corset. I want all the layers visible, and for it to be clear that while the outside is all pretty and golden, it’s merely covering up something awful. Every layer shows more of the rot.
Okay but this is so cool and such a layered concept I love it!!!!!! Now I want to go to Rhode Island and I hope u make it to the net gala one day and devour everyone
Finally someone mentions the fact that the guided age was glamor on the outside but rotten on the inside. I was so excited for the theme bc of that but none of my favorite fits of the night incorporated it😔
I like that idea! Mine was doing an extravagant bustle gown, but the bottom of the gown is sooty, torn, bloody, etc, that goes up the dress in a gradient. It would represent the people and things trampled on in order to make the gilded age.
In my opinion, ignoring if Kim looks good in the dress or deserves to wear it and all that, it is extremely disrespectful. Not even from an historical point of view, but from an human one. Marylin didn't have much, started from the bottom, and people took so much from her. This was *her* dress. It was made for her. She wanted it to stay hers even after her death. The dress was for her. It just feels so cruel.
it’s just plain disrespectful to take some dead person’s clothes out of where they are being persevered so you can get a few pics even if they didn’t suffer or weren’t famous… like the clothes are being persevered for a reason and it’s just disrespectful to take them out and possibly damage them for nothing
How could you miss on David Harbour!!! He wore the Gilded Age ON THEME looking like a rich ass factory owner with a top hat and cane and EVERYTHING. Absolutely one of my favourite men outfits.
The fact that you don’t see what is wrong with Kim wearing the dress blows my mind. Not only she actually did damage the dress. But also, Marilyn did say that she did NOT want anyone wearing the dress, it was special for her and had meaning for her. I know she’s dead, but a little - just an ounce - of respect for THE HUMAN BEING that she was would be nice. She has been done so damn wrong lately, and disrespected even since she was alive. One would think a woman would understand. But no. I understand Kim and Ripley’s not understanding, but you? A minute of research would have told you everything you would need to know about that dress and the person it represents. Stop supporting the dehumanisation of Marilyn.
While I agree with your take I think she was criticizing the harsh takes on Kim more than the fact that they were mad at her wearing it. She said that she understands why others are mad but calling Kim an attention whore for wearing the dress was a bit too much.
Not being informed about something isn't on the same level as loaning out / wearing historical artifacts. She literally said that she didn't know whether or not Marilyn said anything about other people wearing her dress. If you actually listened to what Mina said, you would know that she was just uninformed, *not* dehumanising Marilyn.
I really wish they would start involving more people from the fashion industry because at least they would actually know what they were doing. It's the same as getting a slew of influencers and celebrities to play in the Super Bowl.
But the fashion industry is already involved. The celebs themselves are dressed by designers and brands and only have some say in the outfit and styling. The celebs are just the face. Some of them only get to go because they are invited by designers. The designers are really the ones responsible.
^ Exactly - these big fashion houses seem to rarely care about spending money and time on custom outfits for the theme and Anna Wintour sure as hell doesnt seem to care so why would they?
Maybe a better way to put it is people in costume design. We have so many wonderful costume designers that could collaborate with luxury designers to take advantage of what makes this gala unique
The men could’ve had so much fun with this theme. Also I feel like Thom Browne is the only designer who tried to keep everyone he dressed on theme. I loved Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s embellished suit. Edit: Emma Corrin’s suit was better than like 90% of the suits the men were wearing.
Agreed, his suit was absolutely stunning! But yeah, the guys constantly disappoint, every year. It's nice to see more and more guys taking risks every year though, even if they're not always on theme.
the potential of this one... i think i was even more disappointed because the theme was so easy this year so it kinda sucks to see people being so uncreative? careless? i just feel like if there's any event where you could (and should) "dress up", it's the met gala
This was my issue with Emma Stone’s costume. like Mina said, recycling/rewearing dresses is great. but if you’re going to rewear a dress, WHY would you choose to do it at the met gala of all places??
Not sure if anyone mentioned this but Marilyn Monroe is quoted as saying no one else should ever wear the Happy Birthday dress after her. It was made for her personally and fitted her perfectly.
ok but if i see chicago 2002-style evening gowns (i love chicago 2002 btw) n dresses that r supposed 2 b 4 flappers but contain layers upon layers upon layers of fringe i'm gonna actually have my soul leave my body
I really liked Blake Lively’s dress. I think it was a great way to still keep to the theme but have a more modern dress or shape. Also, the reason why Kim K had to wear the fur was to cover the open zipper at the back because she couldn’t actually zip
I’m a United States History teacher, and my classes just finished a unit on the Gilded Age two weeks ago - the unit was comically bookended by HBO’s “The Gilded Age” and the Met Gala. So you *know* I was excited to see what this year’s Met produced. Suffice it to say, I was not impressed… 😒
Their "strict procedures" did nothing. And these Maralyn lovers aren't mad over nothing. She RUINED this dress. Literally stretched and ripped the fabric. Some of the beads were MISSING off the back of the dress... That fur jacket was added because the dress can't fully zip😂 now that's what I call trashy. Marilyn wouldn't been PISSED given the fact she spent hours being sewn INTO the dress and Kim just stretched it out. It didn't even fit her yet she still wore it? IT WASNT MADE FOR HER. You said it perfect, Kim was born rich. That's the ONLY reason she was allowed to wear it. She ruined a historical artifact that once belonged to a real American idol because she is selfish had had the cash to flash. 😐
In Kim Kardashian's case, there's more to the situation than just the dress alone. It's representative of the consistent disrespect and violations that Marilyn Monroe suffered. Beyond even the dress, 'Ripley's Believe It or Not!' also gifted a lock of Marilyn's hair to Kim. The hair from her head that was taken off of her corpse, which Kim proceeded to joke about sleeping with every night. This is especially egregious as Marilyn was a Jewish woman (converts should be treated no differently than those born into Judaism), and this thus links to how Jewish people historically had their hair taken from them, which is something Jewish people have also taken issue with in this whole ordeal. So I draw issue with the assertion that Marilyn would be unbothered with this, because when she was alive, she had this to say: "Everyone was always pulling at me, tugging at me, as if they wanted a piece of me. It was always, 'do this, do that,' and not just on the job but off, too. God, I've tried to stay intact, whole." And where the dress itself was concerned even, she specifically said that she didn't want anyone else to wear that dress because she wanted something made unique that only she would ever wear. What they did was disrespecting the wishes of a woman who experienced lifelong disrespect. This woman was constantly disrespected in life, in her work, and now also in death to the point where they're, quite literally, giving both her possessions AND parts of her away up to FIFTY YEARS after her death.
the hair actually is a fake as the receipts of Marilyn's makeup and hair for JFKs birthday party are to different names. The person claiming this is Marilyn's hair claimed he did her hair and makeup for that night and cut a lock off which is false, he also isn't in her phone book whereas the true makeup and hair artists are. So Kim got scammed essentially.
@TheKitKatLizard I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees the Marylin-Britney thing. Both icons who worked their asses off yet were pushed to the side for being "dumb blondes".
My issue with Kim wearing that dress is that she touted having to lose 16 pounds in a ridiculous amount of time. She is wearing the shawl to cover her bum because it still wouldn’t fit in the dress. Yet, she’s claiming it did and she had to go through hell and back to do so. Not a fan :-/
??? maybe she actually did? why would anyone lie about it? and we dont know how people’s body works, maybe it was just bloating and personally i dont we should be obsessed with anyone’s body
@@v1nt4geb4byy no, there is a pic being shared where it is evident her bum is hanging out of the dress, with only a ribbon to close the upper portion. A very strategically placed shawl to fix that problem though!
@@v1nt4geb4byy and I totally agree we should NOT be obsessing over anyones body, but she has made a fortune off of doing so; not only her own body, but by capitalizing off of other womens insecurities (skims). So, she kind of made this bed
I don’t see enough people talk about Quannah Chasinghorse. She looked absolutely gorgeous and keeps representing TRUE American fashion, especially for the gilded age in which many rights were taken from indigenous and people of color.
Wow, I didn't think there would be this much interest in the comments about Kim K's dress. I decided to do a little more digging after reading some opinions on it, and came across this wonderful Twitter thread by fashion historian Dr. Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell. She talks about the ethics of wearing museum pieces in very digestible detail with other examples as well: twitter.com/HottyCouture/status/1522257911933591562
I thought I'd share for anyone interested in reading further!
Just to add some additional info to Kim wearing the faux fur - she wore it because she actually couldn't fit into the dress, the backside was still open so it was worn to cover that.
@@RosieN i didnt mind the addition of a coat of some kind but the one she chose was ugly 😭
I really loved Nicola Coughlan and Sabrina Carpenter's looks. I'm surprised you didn't mention the latter one, thought you'd like it..

I know! Did anyone even do a fitting before? Nothing seems to fit.
yeah, like i personally think olivia rodrigo looked absolutely STUNNING even though she didn’t really follow the theme in my opinion

Or just say “I don’t care for the theme.” Which like, why have a theme if you are not going to follow it.

The biggest issue now is that there is photographic proof that Kim irreparably damaged Marilyn’s dress.
Every word of that description hurt my soul deeply. The freaking essence of the dress is ruined for what?????
I completely agree. We aren’t attacking her for being a woman! We’re attacking her for being a woman that is blind to the significance of this dress because of her IMENSE wealth.

I came to the comment section just for this.

This is the real issue of 2022's Met Gala. I wish I could like this comment a one thousand times. It's a shame it's not higher.
Right??i cant believe they just ignored the history of the artefact-actually,i can.proves that they havent changed,i suppose
And not even on theme 🙄

Not to mention Marilyn was an advocate for body positivity and Kim just…starved herself to fit in the dress.
Counter suggestion: Wear Marilyn's, but not that one. Wear a play on the potato sack dress. If you want to rep the icon, that's a better way to do it.
@@makaylaserniotti1474 Marilyn was a size 4/6 at her heaviest which was “thick” back then. But, like you mention, she didn’t seem to feel the need to alter her body or her weight too much. Kim’s fashion choice for the night seems to be grounded in her own hubris.

The Marilyn dress thing is not out of proportion. Museums have strict codes of conduct prohibiting EVER wearing the clothes. The amount of damage done to the dress is irreversible and for what?
Ripley’s is not considered a true museum, so they don’t really adhere to costume ethics. It bothers me soooo much.

She grew on controversy her whole life.
simple, 'kim wears ACTUAL dress' makes headlines around the world
she actually did wear a replica for most of the night - the real thing was just for the carpet. so it was a meaningless stunt just for the sake of doing it. i detest the entire thing. poor marilyn
I agree and I just feel like the supposed statement Kim was trying to make just was extremely overshadowed on top of that it wasn’t even on theme smh
I finally see someone that heard about the tie and fur jacket thing. I've seen a picture and I wasn't sure it's real but now I think it is.
i just read your first few lines about rich people being able to buy pieces of history. isn't that true? rich people can buy them tho.
This comment is everything 🤌🏾

You’re attaching too much unnecessary meaning to it, making it into some kind of bad symbol but it’s not even that deep.
i thought the same tbh. shes truly nothing like Marilyn

These videos are so cathartic lol. It was painful seeing look after look come out and literally every single person disregarded the theme. You're telling me these people had the opportunity and all the resources in the world to dress up like a John Singer Sargent painting and they DIDN'T take it? It's infuriating!
I was literally thinking about John Singer Sargent Paintings and was so disappointed no one dressed as Madame X
Wouldn't it be cool if the Met was like, "y'all butchered that theme, so we're doing it again next May".
She reportedly made several very large "donations" to Ripley's Believe It or Not who owns the dress.
At least May isn't the warmest and most humid month, but it's Not Great.

i do have a big issue with kim wearing marilyn's dress but it's nothing to do with the content of their characters and everything to do with the fact that this is a historical garment that she's wearing (i know it was only for the red carpet, but kim still moved around and sweat in it, that still does cause damage), it's not on theme, it doesn't match her skin tone because it was made to match marilyns skin tone. and she changed into a replica anyway??? so if you're really so committed to this terrible not on theme idea why not just wear the replica instead?
Who cares - this dress won’t impact your life in any way

It was demonstration of power and money for her.
A replica would have looks so much better then thru could have created the skin illusion that dress had on Marilyn.
Also pretty ethically sus to be wearing the dress at all.
They really turned a human woman into a fucking novelty commodity for the ultrarich to use at a status token. Horrific.
It was such an ironic theme it's incredible
Irish immigrants
Exactly, Kim is using Marilyn for attention and to create a publicity stunt.

YES

I could be wrong though, so feel free to correct me.

my problem with kim wearing marilyns dress come in about three points:
1. kim hasn't done half of what marilyn has for women and minorities and created an ethical business like marilyn did(she became the second woman in US history to own a production company. she also helped ella fitzgerald, one of the best singers in US history in my opinion, to jumpestart her career. kim has done none of this).
YES!!! All of this!!!

@@santramariya4729 That’s just…I have no words actually 😟
The host was also not on theme lol
From what I've heard Anna Wintour doesn't really decide the themes. It's the MET committee who decides, she's just the face or she's presiding over the event. But like yeah can anyone tell Anne to atleast screen the looks a little bit?
@@peteartieda58 Apparently she does! That's the infuriating this about it - she knows exactly how NOT on theme every single person is and does seem to care..... or they're just taking what they can get

Marilyn Monroe literally said "I want this dress to be a dress only Maralyn can wear."
Not only that, but they damaged the dress, which is old and should be preserved.
You can tell she did her research and didn't just google "vintage dress" and put that on
she are and left no crumbs
Hers was fabulous. I haven’t heard enough people talking about it.
if only the other bridgerton girls had also worn dresses more similar to the theme
And it isn't yellow! 😉
My biggest problem with Kim Kardashian wearing Marilyn's dress, aside from the historical value the dress has, is that it is yet another way to completely disregard every wish Marilyn had for her belongings to go to her closest friends and loved ones, it keeps selling Marilyn as an object and a "sex symbol" the way hollywood always forced her to be, it gets worse with dumb people going "kim k is the modern day marilyn" when they have no point of comparison aside from the hypersexualization of both
EDIT: Just so you know, I will not reply to more people here. That's all, I am not attacking anyone, I am just saying that it is wrong.
fantastically phrased!!
Marilyns friends sold that stuff after they got it
it was a loan kk does not own it
No one forced her to.
Literally it’s such a stunning look!
It was disappointing to see how she was barely noticed at last years met as well. I just found it so exciting to see such a proud indigenous woman attend a huge event like this. Her looks have been absolutely stunning thus far!
She slayed last year and this years gala! I was so happy to see her again, she deserves more attention
Quannah's look was STUNNING!
It was so nice to see representation on the red carpet! She should be talked about more!!
also another reason that I dislike Kim K wearing the marilyn's drees is that it looks SO PLAIN. the dress was cut to fit marilyn's curves perfectly, so what's the point of using the same dress if it's OBVIOUSLY not meant to look good on you? marylin also looked so confident and free in the pictures, the fact that she looks naked and had this GLOW about her personality and the way she moved made the look perfect.
That's just the difference between having money and having common sense. Clearly being a billionaire can buy you anything but that.
yeah, it was kind of a display in how much privileged society thinks about thinness.
Right?it sort of feels like the magic is gone 😭
Exactly, it feels so disrespectful that Kim is the last person to wear it
Kim probably thinks she's somehow in the same league as Marilyn... not realizing legacy =/= money
Never.
She will never be on Marilyn's level
What gave the dress it’s value was because Marilyn was the last person to wear it. Now it’s Kim...🤦♀️ it’s like if someone opened the packaging of a collectible item😳
THISSS!!! Nail on the head^^
what really annoys me is the fact that the dress isn't even worth less money after she wore it. now its worth 5 million more dollars than it was before 😒 and i saw an article saying "kim kardashian visits HER marilyn monroe birthday dress" and its not even kims dress. like just because kim spent a bunch of money to wear that dress doesn't make it hers 🙄
Let's not forget Sebastian Stan in his "A pimp named Highlighter" outfit.....Oh, another honorable mention Rhada Blank
Edit: my question about this Kim thing was answered by only 2 people with class and respect, I got it, so don't tell my about it lol and it literally wasn't her size so yea...
Not A Pimp Named Highlight 😂
You’ve made two comments now about different sizes from a different era - unsure if you’re incredibly dense but women’s measurements haven’t changed drastically in the last 75 years. Vanity sizing is certainly a thing but if a garment was say an 8 in 1950 and is now a 0 the same sized woman would fit it regardless. Marilyn and Kim have a similar hip to waist ratio (at least pre surgery for Kim) they both have teensy waists and are famous for their hourglass figures. Them having similar measurements would not be shocking.

Kim didn’t deserve to wear that dress. Why they agreed on giving it to her? It pisses me off so much, like, Kim, how tf dare you? Sorry for the rant >
@@kitvicious And they even gave her a piece of Marilyns hair, that chocked me honestly. @@kitvicious My exact feelings, just very disturbing how they would just give away her hair like that just because she's famous and a "fan" of her.
I think Kim literally thinks she is the new Marilyn and wanted to show some kind of symbolism with the dress. Gross
I feel like people kind of infantilize Kim. Shes a literal lawyer. She is smart enough to know why this was a bad idea.
@@gingerballin you've got a point there
It’s not that it was Kim wearing the Monroe dress, it’s that ANYONE wore it! Ask a conservationist, it did damage to a one of a kind, historic, iconic dress that is extremely delicate.

@@MsMcKat-ub4sm oh yikes. I just saw the bts footage, and the way they were pulling on the fabric is hard to watch. I bet it was damaged
Not worth it.
the fact a reporter ate up the celebrities at the met gala just shows these celebrities are lazy and make no effort to follow the theme
A lot of the dresses/outfits were really lovely, they just weren't on theme. Blake Lively's dress really would've been great LAST year, with its Lady Liberty theme. A few felt spot on, but yeah, several missed the mark so hard they clearly weren't even aiming.
Agree W Blake!
A lot of them just look like the standard red carpet event type dresses. The type that Khloe had on. Sparkly and designer. What a waste of a great opportunity to showcase art.
blake's dress was based on the architecture of the guilded age so it is on theme since the theme did not specify what part of the gilded age it should be about
Blake’s dress was on theme though.
the theme was gilded glamour not gilded fashion, so her dress was actually on theme

That's my problem as well, what kind of trend is this starting? Are people going to be wearing Frida Kahlo's corsets and skirts now? Are we just raiding the dead's wardrobes for clout? It's disgusting.

Crash diets are the worst. Some women do them for their weddings but models and actors have to do them all the time. We as a society can handle seeing some fat and water weight on screen. It's fine. Just let people eat a normal, healthy diet

@@NinaWTF there are different ways to interpret a theme
@@NinaWTF the initial silhouette is very much gilded age, and then transforms into a modern one. It's a mix of modern and gilded age. It's the whole take of the dress, past into present.
@@harrietparsons9501 yes and choosing the less obvious interpretation is fun
Yes, what Mina said.
Right? It was so disturbing to me, I hope this gets talked about more because I can't believe so many people are just brushing over it
She probably didn’t mention it because her friend style assisted for Emma.
@Rania Kahn Or she could've... I don't know... simply not known? It's 2023, we're over assuming people have bad intentions because they don't know something.
The fact that rumors are swirling that next year Anna has to approve *everyone’s* outfits to ensure they’re on theme says volumes (if it turns out to be true) about how off track so many designers/celebs have been
Highly doubt that, Anna isn't even on theme herself. I've only heard people wishing that their outfits would get approved beforehand.
Anna has heinous fashion sense and she NEVER, EVER follows the theme. Just wears the same boring, disgusting Chanel outfits year after year. And no one with that awful hair cut should be allowed to control anyone's outfits ever.
Hasn't it always been the case they she does that?
Anna was one of the worst dressed!
God I hope so, becuase someone is going to lie and change dress. That would great.
My main issues were,
- It’s not on theme!
If she didn't tell anyone that was the dress, no one could've realized. It's so painfully styled, horrible.
Lol, the historical part is pretty important. Considering who it was made for and her story.
That would explain it
I don't think it's uncommon for looks to be made only a few weeks/days before the gala. I feel like that happens every year.
@@PJ-io8pl idk most people I've heard talk about how it took months to make in previous years
@@jade-fm4no The people you hear about are probably the ones that _want_ you to know how much work went into their look.
The designer of Marilyn’s dress said that he had the dress soooo tailored and perfectly fit to Marilyn so that only Marilyn could wear it
I adore this video (and you) but I completely disagree with your take on the Kim dress situation. Sure she was from humble beginnings and dealt with severe mental health (that went unchecked and minimized) but if she were still alive today she'd know, learn, and see what a god damn icon she has become and that some Kardashian-definitely-not-self-made-but-they-can-keep-trying-to-claim-that billionaire definitely does NOT need to be wearing one of her own custom, iconic dresses complete with a shoddy bleach job to boot.
the fact that marilyn didn’t want anyone else to wear the dress just makes it worse
no, bc i am SO convinced i could have crushed this year's met gala. my outfit motif would be inherent vice: in historical clothing preservation, "inherent vice" is when flaws with the materials of a garment or its construction cause it to prematurely decay. this is especially prevalent in gilded age clothing due to their use of weighted silks. in the gilded age, silk was sold by weight, not by yard, so merchants would soak the material in alkali salt, which would let them sell less silk for more money (capitalism corrupts), but the alkali salts would cause the garment to deeply deteriorate over time. i would have worn a dress inspired by an exhibit i saw at the RISD museum on inherent vice while on vacation with some friends of mine. i would also make it fun and sexy by using the "decay" of the garment to incorporate sheer materials and strategic rips. the dress would be a metaphor for the "inherent vice" of the gilded age, which was outwardly opulent but inwardly a rotting pit of human rights violations, and indeed for america itself, which is built on the inherent vices of slavery and genocide. the idea is so obvious i can only assume that no one thought of it because no celebrities saw the RISD exhibit because, as is equally obvious, rich people do not go to providence rhode island for vacation.
That’s so interesting, thank you helping me learn and for making me think xxxxxxxxx
She said that she understands why others are mad but calling Kim an attention whore for wearing the dress was a bit too much.
the person who owns the dress already said that Kim did not damage it
@@danielagarza3067 bruh where, there are pictures of the dress being stretched and the sequences popped off after she wore it
Not being informed about something isn't on the same level as loaning out / wearing historical artifacts. She literally said that she didn't know whether or not Marilyn said anything about other people wearing her dress.
If you actually listened to what Mina said, you would know that she was just uninformed, *not* dehumanising Marilyn.
What is she doing to Marilyn? It's a dress
@Betty Turcan if kim could get a dress from a museum this should've been easy
@Betty Turcan literally my first thought, they had so many beautiful dresses, some with really great modern elements
They’re gonna have to do a 1920s theme next year bc that seems to be what these stylists cannot get off their minds
And usher in another era of horribly inauthentic recreations of 1920s looks? OOF
I’m sure whoever turns up next year would find a way to not fit that theme either.
okay but 20's era fashion done right would be soooo much fun for next year
ok but if i see chicago 2002-style evening gowns (i love chicago 2002 btw) n dresses that r supposed 2 b 4 flappers but contain layers upon layers upon layers of fringe i'm gonna actually have my soul leave my body
I really liked Blake Lively’s dress. I think it was a great way to still keep to the theme but have a more modern dress or shape.
Also, the reason why Kim K had to wear the fur was to cover the open zipper at the back because she couldn’t actually zip
Too fat to fit n2 Marilyns dress. Too funny.
God, I've tried to stay intact, whole."
And where the dress itself was concerned even, she specifically said that she didn't want anyone else to wear that dress because she wanted something made unique that only she would ever wear.
Could not have said it better myself
Oh my God I hadn't heard the hair part. That's disgusting
I had no idea Marylin was Jewish. That makes me even more upset on her behalf.
@TheKitKatLizard I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees the Marylin-Britney thing. Both icons who worked their asses off yet were pushed to the side for being "dumb blondes".
I was so hoping you would make a video on this! The looks were really all over the place this year.
Yeah i mean so much money and no research
@@v1nt4geb4byy someone may lie about something like that to be commended for their strength in sticking to their diet/losing the weight!
