@@saraly4130 beacause it was about the gilded age of America as it was in America: an anthology of fashion! Which was the part two of last year's theme not about other countries fashion at the end of 19th century. So if people are not interested they don't have to attend.
I do not understand why it's so hard to just have a bustled skirt. It can have a thigh high slit, a ridiculous train, make it sequined or embroidered, a ruffle bustle, do some underwear as overwear and have a gilded bustle cage. Throw some hats in there. This is off the top of my head and I'm certainly nowhere near as talented as these designers. edit: after seeing Jeremy Pope, a ~1880s gown done in a neon leather.
I actually think Maisie wasn’t given the credit she deserves! You can see in the photos that accompanies the Vogue blog that she has a legit bustle and in fact Thom Brown did exactly what you said created a deconstructed gown that would have been right at home in the gilded age. She also gave a nod to the era with her hair, something most everyone else overlooked
To me her hair is giving more 1920s than anything else. I like her dress, but I would have liked the look a lot more had the corset looked even remotely like a period one instead of that strange and ill-fitting tube.
I truly appreciate your effort to find references or meaning to the looks... Unfortunately I think that most have absolutely no intention to follow the theme or simply didn't get the theme at all 😅
leave it to a bunch of rich luxury fashion designers to not understand why Mark Twain called the period the GILDED age. There could have been some REALLY good potential in this theme and they all failed it miserably. So disappointed.
True, and I think most of them increasingly lack introspection and intellectual curiosity when it comes to fashion, art, culture, and history. Take me back to the salons!
Or they lack time do u know what goes into creating these looks n these celeb themselves are busy to do custom so that’s why some got archived or runway outfits Like look at billie eilish gucci dress
I Bet if they had a committee from the MET vote on who had the best looks of the event more designers would attempt to fit the theme and be more creative.
Can we appreciate that Lena Situations was the first french youtuber/influencer ever invited to the Met Gala and was more on theme than most people there, even though the theme focused on a specific era of American fashion? The US girlies should take note
i would argue that Jessica Chastain is definitely on theme. The spiritualism movement really started around the 1840's (in New York too) and rose in popularity for decades, well into the 1920's. clairvoyance, crystal-reading, mesmerism, thought-reading, the supernatural and occult? All major parts of the movement and practiced by spiritualists of the time.
YESSSSSSSS LENA ! Love that you included her in your roast ! Yay from France ! And also you admitting that Lila Moss is on theme is the most hilarious thing in life love you bye.
i've been WAITING for you to make a John Singer Sargent Portrait of Madame X reference!!! I don't understand how no one used that as an influence when it's literally displayed IN the MET?! How do you mess that up??
The arrogance of the designers and people that attended the Met Gala give a reason to discuss the ignorance uneducated decision to disregard the theme/history.
You're giving these people too much credit. You're so informed, and it's impressive, but I think you're in a state of denial about how bad this MET was at following the theme. 😭
Coming from someone completed uneducated in fashion, when I saw Chastain, I didn't think fortune teller as much as I saw 1940s wealthy woman lounging in her parlour in a flashy turban.
I usually couldn't care less for fashion and red carpets, but you make them interesting (maybe you opened a door for a new growing interest?) I watched the video on the gilded age (because I'm interested in history), and wanted to see what you would think of the looks, and I'm really enjoying it, and wanting more
So the Karley Kloss look is what I was hoping someone would do which is modernize an Edwardian Lingerie Dress which is essentially for those here who don’t know who Bernadette Banner is (and haven’t watched her historically accurate Mary Poppins Jolly Holiday Series) a Lingerie Dress is a dress in the Edwardian classic silhouette which is very much just layered cotton lawn, batiste, net or voile and lace and it’s traditionally white but I like this black take on it. Also this was a style worn from the 1890s to the 1910s with most prominence being during the Edwardian Period between 1901 and 1910
That looks nothing like an Edwardian chemise or the French Chemise à la Reine. They are usually only laced at the top neckline, and at the hems. The underskirts or petticoats would have batiste lace, or any other exquisite laces, but that’s probably the ONLY reference that that Givenchy dress has made. Moreover, the chemises were either round necked, with the neckline laced or if they had silk satin shoulder straps, the bust line would always be straight, NOT that triangular ‘bikini bra style’ like the one that Karlie Kloss wore. And the chemises would most of time end just below the knees/ at calf length, not drape down to the ground in a train. If they were going to wear a longer gown or the robe à la française then it would be accompanied by petticoats, over skirts, hoops/panniers/farthingales/crinoline. Even for the turn of the century Mary Poppins silhouette, per Bernadette’s video, it features an inverted ‘S’ shape figure, where both the bust and the rear (somewhat similar to bustling) were accentuated, and the waist and torso region corseted so it gave a more ‘snatched’ and curvy look. The dress, or lingerie that karlie kloss wore had NOTHING that resembles that.
@@alexquest6217 Somehow you missed that I said take not exact museum quality replica. A take does not have to have any direct resemblance to the extant thing and often won’t because it’s for a modern audience who the majority of doesn’t know what the reference is. Yes it’s highly modernized but as someone who designs many modernized takes of historical garments and has stared at many of those gowns for a long time a lot I will see even a slight figure. Also even the fucking campiest of campy people you’d have expected to go full period didn’t bloody do it because the majority of people who look at Met Gala looks are not nerds or professionals who nitpick every detail of every look. Furthermore a Modern take is not going to have the classic silhouette it’s going to have a modern version that may be highly reminiscent or not reminiscent at all depending who designs the piece.
Isn't it highly pretentious from Tom Ford and other designers to say that they don't want it to be "costumey" when they're not the ones choosing the theme and when fashion is always inspired from the past ? Idk, if you don't like just don't show up at all.
Just one note on the video, the Laura Harrier dress is actually a complete copy of 16th century spanish renaissance dress, so she actually missed the theme. Google the spanish renaissance dress and you can see the big resemblance. They also wore some kind of petticoats in 16th century, bustle is different from it. Just my note on a good video
I can tell how hard you've worked on the research of this series by the amount of editing slip-ups throughout the video lol thank you for the content Luke!!! love hearing your insight on all these looks

You are too soft on the celebrities. Even if there was no theme, it was the most boring ever. Nothing stands out. It looks like the celebrities are flogging brand above the use of creativity. What really hate about this is that it does not support domestic skill. The theme was attached to American fashion, which means made in America. These awful people failed. What’s the point. It also means they don’t care about creating jobs or skilled workers. Just in it for the cash. Let’s not buy into this rubbish, it can be be better.
A lot of ppl commenting seems missing that Luke probably is doing review by alphabetical order. Your 'S' faves should be in part 4, be patient. We should generally be grateful for history/fashion lesson in 4 parts - and I wish 90% of MET attendees this year (and their stylists) would turn it on and learn something for once, because year after year MET gets...lazy. People focus on 'looking pretty' instead of following actual themes.

The lovely black figure of 8 braided closing on the black jacket frogging. I am so impressed at how much background and referencing you put together for two almost back to back episodes.Do you ever sleep?
In regards to Jessica Chastain, I feel she may be channeling the growth of the Spiritualist movement during the Gilded Age, as Spiritualism saw its largest growth during this time, and is a religion that heavily relies on female mediums to perform seances. It was actually one of the main ways in which women took positions of power in the late 19th century.
Technically Loue Fuller was a modern dancer. She did some really innovated stuff for modern dance and theater stage lighting. She was one of the first performers to experiment with stage lighting.
Léna situation first MG and she nailed it 😭 🔥so proud of this girl, like okay the topic of influencer at the Met is kindaaa and kinda not controversial like why should we gaf, we don't make the list, but damn for once, an influencer than can slay AND hit the theme on their first carpet?? Some must have thought gilded meant royalty, the gilded age was an era of American opulence. A time of new money meets old money and a business boom of wealth. People took gilded to mean royalty and that had nothing to do with the gilded age. So obnoxious, study some history as to not embarrass yourselves. Honestly the missed opportunities maybe a dress or tux being covered in newspaper headlines of important things that were happening in history at that time or some crazy steampunk looks to represent the railroad from that time would have been amazing for the Met, even someone like Bella Hadid in a ensemble that was literally just a women's suffrage sash placed just over the necessary body parts. this was such a missed opportunity for so many cool looks
Tom Ford's statement is ridiculous. Every era of fashion draws from eras that came before. He either didn't feel like doing his research for the gala, doesn't like the Gilded Age in general or felt doing regency.
@@dazedconfuseds I was referring to the white dress that looks very regency inspired. It's ironic he refuses to use the theme for inspiration, but then puts people in clothes that seem to draw heavily from another iconic fashion era.

Agree
"throw some hats in there" lolol. we don't ask for much ok met
Fr tho
I actually think Maisie wasn’t given the credit she deserves! You can see in the photos that accompanies the Vogue blog that she has a legit bustle and in fact Thom Brown did exactly what you said created a deconstructed gown that would have been right at home in the gilded age. She also gave a nod to the era with her hair, something most everyone else overlooked
To me her hair is giving more 1920s than anything else. I like her dress, but I would have liked the look a lot more had the corset looked even remotely like a period one instead of that strange and ill-fitting tube.
I wish you'd do such elaborate coverage for every met gala
I truly appreciate your effort to find references or meaning to the looks... Unfortunately I think that most have absolutely no intention to follow the theme or simply didn't get the theme at all 😅
Totally! Luke has to bend over backwards trying to relate these outfits to the theme.
You know this Met was wild when a politician dressed better than celebrities who say fashion is their thing. I mean, come on
leave it to a bunch of rich luxury fashion designers to not understand why Mark Twain called the period the GILDED age. There could have been some REALLY good potential in this theme and they all failed it miserably. So disappointed.
True, and I think most of them increasingly lack introspection and intellectual curiosity when it comes to fashion, art, culture, and history. Take me back to the salons!
Or they lack time do u know what goes into creating these looks n these celeb themselves are busy to do custom so that’s why some got archived or runway outfits
Like look at billie eilish gucci dress
Léna Situations getting the praise she deserves >>>>
Girl I have been watching his met gala videos HOPPING he would mention her and I am so glad he did
Yeees !!!!!
Saaaame !!
Et elle est dans le THÈME
I Bet if they had a committee from the MET vote on who had the best looks of the event more designers would attempt to fit the theme and be more creative.
A 3 part roast?!? Damn no one is safe from your roast
theres 1 more part after this !!!
YAY
I could watch a million of these and never get bored
So happy you talked about Lena Situation's look. Love her youtube videos and what she represents for young women.
Léna Situations on Haute Le Mode, youtube worlds collide 😊 thanks for covering every look and not just the dozen ones we've already seen everywhere!
Can we appreciate that Lena Situations was the first french youtuber/influencer ever invited to the Met Gala and was more on theme than most people there, even though the theme focused on a specific era of American fashion? The US girlies should take note
omg a part 3 we are so spoiled
i would argue that Jessica Chastain is definitely on theme. The spiritualism movement really started around the 1840's (in New York too) and rose in popularity for decades, well into the 1920's. clairvoyance, crystal-reading, mesmerism, thought-reading, the supernatural and occult? All major parts of the movement and practiced by spiritualists of the time.
Thing is, they would still more or less follow the era's fashion. Not dress as if it were 1930.
@@AJansenNL Yes, this.
Johnny is in your video ahhhhhh sjbsbsbsjsjsjsjshss, you don't know how much i was waiting for this 😭😭
same !!!
So happy to see you speak of Lena ! 🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷
I usually couldn't care less for fashion and red carpets, but you make them interesting (maybe you opened a door for a new growing interest?)
I watched the video on the gilded age (because I'm interested in history), and wanted to see what you would think of the looks, and I'm really enjoying it, and wanting more
So the Karley Kloss look is what I was hoping someone would do which is modernize an Edwardian Lingerie Dress which is essentially for those here who don’t know who Bernadette Banner is (and haven’t watched her historically accurate Mary Poppins Jolly Holiday Series) a Lingerie Dress is a dress in the Edwardian classic silhouette which is very much just layered cotton lawn, batiste, net or voile and lace and it’s traditionally white but I like this black take on it. Also this was a style worn from the 1890s to the 1910s with most prominence being during the Edwardian Period between 1901 and 1910
This is what I was coming here to say! She's maybe a little off in time period, but she is absolutely making a reference

I'M DEAD 💀💀💀💀SHE LOOKS LIKE GETTY IMAGES WITH WATERMARK BUT IT'S BURBERRY
did burberry just watermark her body?💀💀💀
I love that you sent some love to Lena :)
I swear your opinions (which are on point) are the only ones that count!
Isn't it highly pretentious from Tom Ford and other designers to say that they don't want it to be "costumey" when they're not the ones choosing the theme and when fashion is always inspired from the past ? Idk, if you don't like just don't show up at all.
Indeed. It echoed the vibes of Martin Scorcese claiming that the MCU wasn't "cinema." Okay, but who asked you?
Plus it's a fundraiser for the costume institute why are you avoiding being costumey 😭
You know he’s mad when he has to make a part 3 of a red carpet
part three including johnny
Just one note on the video, the Laura Harrier dress is actually a complete copy of 16th century spanish renaissance dress, so she actually missed the theme. Google the spanish renaissance dress and you can see the big resemblance. They also wore some kind of petticoats in 16th century, bustle is different from it. Just my note on a good video
I can tell how hard you've worked on the research of this series by the amount of editing slip-ups throughout the video lol thank you for the content Luke!!! love hearing your insight on all these looks
Your a trooper Luke (and team) for sorting through all of this for us!!
never been so early omg killed it as always Like and team!
Suddenly the only videos i get excited to watch!
honestly hoyeon missed out shes fresh in the minds of people a korean actress/model could never usually reach she should have used the met as a way to secure their interest on her once again by waring a super fancy on theme dress
It wasn’t up to her as everyone lv dressed this year, you can see nothing was custom n used as promotional for ready to wear
@@saintel9248 idk man it kinda is up to her and her team who dresses her its not really a big deal i just think it would have been smarter for hoyeon to go all out on this met
It’s really strange to me the Kim went as Marilyn and her mother decided to go as Jackie O. Kris’ dress is definitely giving the green Valentino.
I think they thought that this year had last year's theme lol. Also Kim should have just worn a replica no one should wear that dress
I feel like when it comes to the American theme these designers do not care. They did the same thing last year. No attempt, no effort.
The big takeaway from all three videos thus far is that we needed gigot sleeves, big bustles, starched collars, and cravats.
thank you for mentioning johnny suh! nctzens were so excited to see him there
Lena supremacy 🙇♀️
Us frenchies (and french speaking people in general) who know Lena know she's passionate about fashion and personnally there was never a doubt in my mind that she was gonna take the Met seriously and kill the look !
So proud of her, she did us good 🥰
De ouf, je suis trop contente de voir un de nos influenceur fr invité, mais en plus une qui ai mieux suivi le thème que plus de la moitié de la liste? bruh go off girl🔥
I love your knowledge of fashion and the way you can impart that knowledge especially with your use of humour! You seriously crack me up!
I’m so happy we got so much content
I know zero about fashion but I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. Love your narrative!
I love the mention of William Morris, because the Arts and Craft Movement is one of my favourites.
The Pre-Raphaelites! Me too!
You should do a video where you give us your top 10 of the best looks of the Met gala
Btw your videos are always interesting and I do learn a lot of things thanks to you 😊
Karlie Kloss's gown is more in line with what my mother wore on her honeymoon in 1933 than anything that my grandmother ever wore.
Thank you for working so hard for us Luke!
I’m fully shook ur following through on all these parts! I’m still waiting for part two of emilee in Paris breakdown
Luke, I NEED YOU TO TALK ABOUT QUANNAH CHASINGHORSE and how she ATE at the MET! (In general, I would like a deep dive on indigenous fashion!)
(Edit* spelling)
Absolutely, nobody is talking about her and I'm sad about it
I think he’s doing them alphabetically so she should be in the next video! :)
Was she the one who also did the awesome gold dress with the turquoise jewelry at the 2021 met gala? I love that look!
I love the knowledge you have on the theme but I'm not so sure designers did reference all the things you point out in each costume, because I don't think they did any deep research .Thank you so much for all the interesting data you share in this videos.
Triple pearl chokers. On theme. Queen Alexandra George Vth’s wife wore a glorious set. Princess Diana wore one in the 1980s
Luc. Cravat rhymes with cat.
It was actually one of the main ways in which women took positions of power in the late 19th century.
how is he so smart ? is like a living encyclopedia
It just has to be said, Gwen Stefani has aged better then anyone Ive ever seen. Shes 52 years old. Its unbelievable!!
The fact that H&M did better job than most of the fashion houses
Your history & research, I’m so here for it. Also happy to see a little bustling even though it’s not the most exciting
i NEED a Haute Le Mode x Violet Chachki collab
Technically Loue Fuller was a modern dancer. She did some really innovated stuff for modern dance and theater stage lighting. She was one of the first performers to experiment with stage lighting.
Omgggg Johnny in your channel!!!!
Kaia Gerber was giving a little pre Raphaelite flowy whimsical. Imagine the same dress but with long sleeves.
It's literally not the hard dayum 😭
you trying to draw inspo from super obscure things is giving the always sunny red string wall meme
I cant be the only one who thinks a lot of the 2022 looks would have been great for the Camp Theme
the Dion Lee look needs to be in the next Blade, i loved the take on menswear
i was so excited to hear you talk about laura’s look!! i knew it was amazing the moment she stepped foot in frame of a camera 😍
I loved your video 💙La La Anthony looked like Raven-Symoné's doppelgänger Leslie Odom Jr. looked like he was wearing a Michelin tire on his head. Part 4, I can't wait to see it (wink) Lol
When I first saw John Batiste, I thought he was wearing just another lazy men's tux, not on theme. Luke taught me how wrong I was lol
I would love to know who's your overall favorite look by the end of the series
Tom Ford's statement is ridiculous. Every era of fashion draws from eras that came before. He either didn't feel like doing his research for the gala, doesn't like the Gilded Age in general or felt doing regency.
It Tom Ford known for regency suits?! Maybe he wanted to try something new to him
@@dazedconfuseds I was referring to the white dress that looks very regency inspired. It's ironic he refuses to use the theme for inspiration, but then puts people in clothes that seem to draw heavily from another iconic fashion era.
Gosh Jeremy Pope is absolutely killing it here, I can't believe I missed this look!
We are blessed with so much content! Thank you for three met gala roast parts 💜💜💜
i'm not going to lie to you, i think that madelaine petsch's outfit was gorgeous. yellow really really suits her, unlike literally every other person ever. i love. it's on-theme, and she looked fantastic. also the mermaid doesn't suck, even though i don't like those in general.
What about black women though 👀 we look great in yellow lol
@@lilyjones2368 agreed, madelaine is one of the only white girls i’ve ever seen look that good in yellow
@@lilyjones2368 okay no you're totally right idk what i was thinking. i meant to specify that i was talking about ginger white women and blonde white women because they have super light skin tones generally, which clash with such a soft colour, and also their hair. i'm not sure how i didn't manage to say that because colour theory was literally my whole point😭
I'm curious to see if you'll include the famous reporter from the met gala since a lot of people agreed she was the best dressed.
this just popped up in my feed. I didn't know there was a part 3! Luke, I couldn't love you any more if I tried. Can't wait for this spring's mish mosh with Lagerfeld, which I'm sure it will be! xoxo
47:10 "It's true, it's true" this is the attitude I'm living for
I'm here for your knowledge of history...I just love it and love you! Thank you for keeping the history part of it 100
