It's a fair stance. Traditionally, "expanded universe" stuff from any franchise tends to not be very good, and you wouldn't have any reason to look into it unless you're a really big fan. That said, I think the status the Karpyshyn novels hold in the series is well earned. Revelation in particular is a very solid prequel.
Deception isn't officially non-canon, it's just of poor quality in terms of lore and continuity and that was addressed in way of apology. There is nothing to indicate it isn't canon, and since the franchise operates on an "everything is canon cause we don't say otherwise and why not" basis there's no reason to believe Deception isn't part of it.
I'd recommend you play a cheap version of Andromeda there's some hidden lore about a bunch of events. It's easy enough to source but you can miss it pretty easily and that mobile infiltrator game was pretty damn alright imo. Great vid. 👍
Personally i think everything in the games are canon even the citadel dlc where you take shore leave. Only reason why is the personal time with the companions only serves to enhance the impact those companions have even the shepard clone seems logical considering thats cerberus's MO with genetic modifications being their strongsuit.
Both Ascension and Retribution literally points out that TIM is on Earth during Shanxi. Some people claims the events of evolution happened after the occupation of Shanxi, but Revelation also explains how the Alliance rid the planet of any Turian presence, so to me Evolution is non canon.
It's all canon respectively. The next mass effect will be the continuation of a non-stubbed 'Prime' timelime. Other things might get explored later on too in books or something. Spinoffs, continuations of other choices made. Too many at r/masseffecf and other places have forgotten this is the nature of Mass Effect as a franchise. Similar to Star Trek in some ways.
As far as everyone's decisions being canon to that playthrough, I would agree- that would be the canon timeline that the player established. As far as all the outside works, I am essentially saying that these are canon to the "Prime" timeline that you refer to as long as it squares with what we see in the games and established lore. That's why I mentioned that one edge case of something that we know isn't canon (probably should have mentioned the Blasto comic as well, now that I think about it). Doesn't mean that Bioware couldn't simply decide to retcon something, obviously.
I recently finished the game for the first time with the legendary edition cuz of a bunch of nagging from my friends being longtime fans and I am so happy I was able to experience this game for the first time. The ending left me depressed tho🥲

What is Canon?
Everything that sells...
Mass Effect is a rare example of me preferring to ignore all the supplementary material and consider it non-canon.

When in doubt, just go by what's presented in the games.
canonically shepard died in mass effect 2
During the intro, during your Insanity run, or during Morinth Snu-snu?
DEATH! By Snu Snu! 😂
Isn't the guy at 10:02 Major Coats ? He's the guy we meet during "Priority : Earth" with Anderson.
Correct. This is a reference to the fact that some promotional materials are confirmed in-game.
4.
We don't talk about Andromeda
Retribution was such a good book.
Video game novels typically aren't very good, but Drew Karpyshyn's books were a pleasant surprise.
@BartlebysCorpse I believe retribution, and the Revan book were the only ones I read unfortunately

Thanks! I really should play it sometime, if only for completeness sake.

Sweet sweet lore.

I missed that. I'll need to add that to some future notes. Thanks!
