- Mass Effect: Andromeda released in 2017 to a horde of memes and vitriolic reactions. Laughable facial animations and game breaking bugs littered online discourse. It is now 2025 and many of these issues have been fixed, so, is it worth playing now? Is the gameplay and story worth the experience? Does Andromeda deserve the poor reputation it has?

I played it at launch and i only had one error in 80 hours of gameplay. It was an amazing game, I believe someone started a negative campaign against this game, it makes no sense otherwise. This is a bigger better mass effect. All it needed to be even better was a longer campaign.
Dumb people kept hating on this game cause everyone else was, sheeps. This is my fav game out of the 60 games i have in my library, play it daily
The hate was never truly warranted, I mostly had fun with it from the get go in 2017. Loved the flexibility of having access to EVERY power eventually and building up viability on colonies made it feel like I was slowly accomplishing something great. The move to another galaxy I feel, while unfortunate to leave behind after all of the world-building, was neccessary and pretty clever IMO as to leave each individual's original trilogy choices as their own personal canon. And as far as the gripes about facial animations go, let's not pretend like it hasn't literally been there since the original game at times..
I would say that the biggest downfall of the game is, well you as the player character as you alluded to. While I think both voice actors did well, neither Ryder was ever going to live up to the personality and legend-building of Commander Shepard or the gravitas delivered by Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer. Beyond that fact, haters are always gonna hate. I went into it back then knowing Andromeda could never top the trilogy so maybe that's why I never had true issues with it. But for what it is, it's absolutely a fun addition to the series, especially from a gameplay standpoint. I'm playing a new playthrough now as I finally have a PS4 with a working disc drive to play my physical copy from back then and I'm enjoying it all over again.
The game is better now, after some fixes. However at the time it had and has issues.
This game was also an early victim of culture wars. I remember this game was supposed to be filled with SJW PROPAGANDA!
How far we have come.
Its a lot of content spread too thin, not enough reaction to your actions, and the dialogue is too Whedonesque.
It has qualities and now where near as bad as its reputation.
What they should have done:
Dragon age Origins. Instead of starting as the child of someone, choose your origins.
Asari and start on the asari ark, same for taurian and every other race.
Go deepr with the sci fi.
Not use the same character model for the asari.
More interesting, varied enemies that fight in their unique ways.
More consequences for your choices within game.
