I second the motion Greg!! I have installed Newley a dozen red heads over the last year!! Life changing for a second gen owner. Older superdutys get to be just as bad and the redhead comes in clutch there as well. Also customer service is great, one of the ones I installed had memory steer after being replaced and they shipped me a new one right out and made it right!!
Awesome awesome video Greg A, nothing finer than taking the 2nd Gen out of the steering lol. After owning two 2nd Gen trucks, I can say without a doubt they are all over the road with the factory steering box. Quite literally the two things you do with a 2nd Gen when your not driving it, is fixing the steering, and fixing rust lol.
So glad I watched this video My 99 dodge 2500 was for a long time tiresome to drive and hated the way it would wander. I was very serious about selling it, but now I will try this. Thanks again

Can't go wrong with a Red Head. Been using these for all our 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen trucks. We also use the Solid Steel Industries Steel Stabilizer to tighten up the steering with a "Luke's Links" adjustable tie-rods, and track bar. Really appreciate your focus to detail, and the time you take to share. Great content... thanks!

I been looking at getting a steering box for my 06 as well. Was on the fence about spending the money on a red head , but I think you convinced me it's worth it. Already have the steering brace on but my box is SHOT!. LOL . Thanks, great video
the track bar is also one of the largest known causes for super sloppy steering on almost any dodge and i would recommend people to check the track bar before the steering gear box but both are known to fail early.
That's awesome you did this. I was just getting ready to order me a redhead box for my 94 second gen cummins that has almost a million miles on it. It still has the stock box on it. It's all over the road with the new 37 inch tires. So I order the same ajustable track bar a box brace kit and a new steering stabilizer kit. The truck has been in my garage for almost a year now get new paint and all rebuild. I cant wait to get it finished.

Just use the adjustment on the side of the box 9/16 in.² and 8 mm allen free

Just changing the steering linkage and track bar on mine alone made a HUGE difference. My truck was obviously a farm truck based on some of the things I've come across

I put a redhead on my 06 super duty. I highly recommend them. I do wish I would have went with the more aggressive tighter gear ratio. Adjusted and ready to go.
The gearboxes for 2nd and 3rd gens are underbuilt for the Cummins. My first choice would be PSC. You won't need the steering stabilizer bar either. It's more expensive but it's a big improvement and the only brand new gear box you can buy for a 2nd gen.

The 2nd gen is my favorite truck of yours. I've got a 2nd gen 1500 that needs a loooooot of work but I wanna diesel swap it soon as part of the restoration.
Having a quicker rack is so underrated. Less corrections. Its certainly an overlooked upgrade especially on trucks but cars as well!

Done a 'lot of work on 2nd gens. Biggest steering problems are the track bar joints and wheel hub bearings that nobody wants to change.
Redhead , 4th gen steering and carli adjustable track bar on my 3rd gen best thing I could have done steering feels great.

Tape measure is all you really need to align these T steering setups. It is the most simple front suspension design to align
You left out an important step in your Redhead commercial. It's important to flush and drain the power steering fluid prior to replacing a steering gear. You don't want all the crap in your old fluid going into your new gear. Also, some systems have a filter.
You should have done a comparison between redhead and bluetop. Both are great brands but I have hear redheads quality control is not what it used to be.
Heard the same thing about Redhead. Also have been hearing good things about Bluetop.

I put a blue top on my 97 roughly 2 years ago and im not sure im super happy with it. I have a redhead on my 05.

@@decentgarage its hard to compare because the red head is on a 3rd gen and blue top is on a 2nd gen. But I prefer the redhead. Also last I heard blue top was out of boxes...so you have to send yours in and they rebuild it. So they wait time would be pretty long.

190k miles on mine and it actually isn't too bad, it has a little play but not nearly as bad as most of them😂. Definitely gonna invest in a redhead now tho
i put a red head on my truck and the steering got worse.... tried to rma it and they wouldnt. went with borgeson hd box, that thing is amazing.

I have a redhead one I was really hoping that it'd hold up longer than it has. Its been in for over a year now, but in the past 3 months the steering has just been driving me nuts again. I do have a lift though so I have been debating on removing it lately, but its only a 2.5" suspension lift.

HAHA. Yeah I slapped a Read Head gear box on my 06 Ram 2500. The first one had issues, looked used when it arrived. They sent me a replacement and that one is still in use five years later with no issues.

Ran the same steering on my 97 had to cut it down roughly 1/2 inch of each tie rod at the threads since the 4th gen is wider

Got a new redhead box in the garage to go on my second gen. I’m currently on my 3rd reman box in 80k miles.
I ended up installing the 3rd gen linkage as well. This is the best my truck has ever steered.
Was really hoping that was a 20% coupon not $20 haha, theyre good units put one in my lb7. Need to put one in my 7.3 at some point.

Does the death wobble, and we can't track it down. Everything is tight.
Checked the entire front steering add suspension, recently found one the shocks/ dampers was bad, replaced them still have it.
Any direction would be great

I have been driving my 2 Nd gen for 300,000 plus miles on 35” tires now 40” irocks, with 2 fingers, stock components for V-10 Which is HD standard on truck back then they did advertise HD steering, been through 2 reach bars, one set of ball joints only one bad at 300,000 but I swapped all joints, 3 sets of wheel bearings Assyrian about 100,000 per unit, 3 sets of tie rods,never had death wobble, one steering box son did that so not sure of mileage
Replaced the same thing on my dad's 7.3 powerstoke and the steering is 100% better now that it's replaced

When you receive your steering box, (I actually have a redhead box for my obs ford, haven’t put it on yet), do I have to “center” the box so I don’t have a big turning radius on one side and short on the other? Or is that not even a thing? I have no clue so I am looking for assistance. Thanks guys.

We used redhead gear clear back in 1987 for all those reasons, especially the price the customer could buy it for to bring it to us.
I built all the boxes for the dealer customers for Ford. Just leaks, that's all they had wrong after 10+ years of wear and tear. No chewed balls that I had to replace.
A redhead gear saves all that labor charge.
2nd gen 1 ton steering pretty much same as 4th gen. I'll be getting me a red head I bought a stock one. Junk within the year.

Pre 98.5 you need a 7 degree reemer to make the 4th gen steering work in the joints an I had to take an inch out of the tie rod bar

i had an 04 with the 4th gen steering and a box like this and it felt like a new truck.
I have an 04 that was dangerously sloppy. I bought and installed the upgraded mopar steering box from 4th gen Dodges. Drives like a brand new truck! Been that way for 4 years now and still tight as can be. Also helps to replace the old style geometry with the upgraded 4th gen one also.
Ive got an 04.5..just put a brand new borgeson box and shaft..box is way bigger than stock..expensive but solved all the play issues, almost felt to tight lol..highly recommend..one thing though you cannot use a brace with this box bc it is bigger than stock
