The second gens are awesome. My 2001 1500 has the 318 and over 200k miles. Only ever had to replace 2 water pumps, a radiator, and fix the rear door handle. The trans slips a bit until it warms up but really I have had hardly any problems with it. I love it to death.

Mine is 118k miles. Dash cracked and I replaced it. Have new bezel to install when I find a radio. This one died. If he got 5k I should be able to get 8 or 9k.
Mine has a Diamondback bed top w/headache rack, chrome nurf bars, 33" tires and dual exhaust, Flowmaster turbos. 5.9L. Original owner.

Now is the time to buy them. They are pretty cheap now. The value of them will only continue to climb as time goes by. They are cheaper to maintain and repair too. When my 3rd gen Ram died, i went out and specifically went back to the 2nd generation model. Its just a much better truck, in practically every way possible. I hope you find one.

@@blueduck9409 What trim level do you own/recommend? I was thinking of getting a SLT Laramie 2nd gen, but I heard the alarm systems can go wonky as they age. Ours was a base model, had manual locks, so we didn't have to worry about that.

@@oreoscadoosh3360 I have a 3/4 ton dodge ram, its a 2001 SLT Laramie 4x4. It also has a 4 inch lift. It has the 5.9 liter V8 gasoline engine. Currently i have the BFG K02 all terrain tires in 285 75R 16. I found it at a used car lot in Lakewood Colorado. The asking price was $6,000. The breaks were shot, the steering had about 4 inches of play in it, and the transfer case seals were leaking, but only had about 100,000 miles on it. The body and interior is in great shape. The engine, transmission, and drive train are in excellent mechanical shape. I had to spend a little bit of money fixing it up, but got it restored. I had to replace every part of the steering mechanism. I put Moog brand parts in it, and, surprisingly, they were not as expensive as i thought it would be. I really enjoy this truck, and i drive it around town every time i go somewhere locally. It is fantastic in mud, snow, ice, dirt, pavement. Im keeping this one and will not be getting another truck unless this one is destroyed. It is so much better than the 2003 ram i had, or even the 2010 model a relative of mine had. My 2001 ram has electric locks and windows, manual 4x4 shifter, and very few sensors that trigger that pesky check engine light. I love this truck.

No issues with it at all (other and wear and tear) until this year when I lost park and 2nd gear and required a trans rebuild. My former neighbor had a 2500 Ram 4x4 truck with the 360 engine. In 98k miles, three transmissions, one transfer case replacement, two fuel pumps, two complete exhaust systems, dash broke at 71k miles and the frame cracked in two places at 68k miles, and fuel gauge failed twice. Only towing it ever did was towing a 16' aluminum boat once in awhile. At 98k miles, the rust was so bad, he got rid of it and bought a Ford F250 4x4 Super Duty. It currently has 161k miles and doing just fine without any problems.

@@MrTruckTV we have a 1996 extended cab without the rear door(s) (I don't know if they were on both sides on the 2001.) with the 6.5' box with the 360. It has 251,500+ miles on the original engine, but it's on it's 4th transmission. It was on it's second transmission when we got it. The engine holds over 40 lbs of oil pressure still and doesn't burn any oil. Those transmissions and 4wd levers being vacuum operated to the front axle are it's weak points for sure. Lots of rust with those thin bodies and being in Illinois and Wisconsin a good bit of it's life too. It fits 33x12.5R-15's pretty easily. It has aftermarket aluminum alloy wheels, factory was 16" wheels. We have Federal Couragia MT's on ours. My dad and I always said the second generation reminded us of the ugly 1970's and 1980's Mercedes-Benz cars like Tommy's. Lol! We didn't like them very much, but it was the only thing affordable at the time at $1500.00.

They’re reliable, sturdy and easy to fit. Use OEM sensors, baby the auto trans and it’ll be happy. Dash cracks but you can get a dash cover. They’re cheap and get the job done. Gas milage sucks but it’s a v8, interior is comfy. Swap out radio n speakers n it’ll be a nice ride. Heatercore usually fails but if dash is destroyed, it’s easy to swap out. Find one with minimum rust, not worth repairing if the rust taken over.

aliexpress in China has a Custom fit dash cover with just a bit of fuzz to give it a custom look I just got a 99 about a month ago The guy threw in a cap without a backflap I've built them before. It's not level. It raises slightly towards the back with Lots of tinted windows Gonna put carpet on the ceiling Install a wind up roof vent paint white around the windows Build a bed Little table top stove and a solar panel and I'll have a bugout road truck. Has 318 with overdrive AC Headers but I'm going to have to have duel exhaust installed exiting on a slant just in front of the real wheels Interior and fabric is identical to yours. Doesn't have this lift Lucas transmission fix will take care of your slipping trani Id change the fluid and filter first Never flush a trani because then it's only a short time before it fails soon after Heard adjusting the bands is a must do service requirement

The cr****** plastic dashes. Brake lines that rot, under sized ft ball joints on the 1500 and 2500 and a high failure rate on the RE46 transmissions. I've had 3 of them, cheap to buy and essentially throwaways when the trans eventually fails.1700-2000 in my area. It's cost per mile, and seasons used that is my metric.

the bands of those transmissions have to be adjusted every time the trans is serviced or it will slip. most trans shops will try to tell you it only needs to be done every 70k miles but don't listen to them! have it done every time. even the owners book if you still have it will say to have the bands re adjusted for every trans service.

$5k for that truck is a decent deal! The fading paint is because dodge used very low quality clear coat which got eaten up by the sun quickly, then will start to deteriorate the actual paint. Only one word describes the dashboard in those years..."garbage". I wish someone would make an improved replacement dash parts with stronger material. The noise from accelerating sounds like its coming from an aftermarket radiator fan-Metal-I have one...lol. The stock fans are the best. Great video!

A tiny crack in dashboard but nothing major bought it for $3k and I love it!! Best $6000 I spent on a rig. Tows anything I hook up. 240,000 miles and finally did a Air Dog lift pump and injector pump. (computer died in pump).

I would recommend a 1996 Ford F-150 as they are very all around solid trucks. or a 2001 Ram 1500 that has transmission issues but the engine is good and they are most likely the cheapest . Maybe a 1998 Chevy K1500 those have electrical issues but are good as well. All great trucks

Great video gents, remember a guy who bought this nearly exact truck in the summer of 2001. It was the best looking, most bad ass truck on the 1/2 ton market. Man, how things have changed in 20-years, shoot, even 10-years. The 360 is a dog compared to the Hemi and the 4-spd trans was notorious for crapping out.

I bought my 01 ram sport quad cab new still own it and still looks pretty close to new. Original black exterior with tan interior. No faded crap paint not rotted or rusted not garage kept never seen a car wash in 23yrs. Hand washed only. Absolutely love that body design. Not really a big fan at all of New body design. Gen 1 and 2 I think were the best design. I hope to keep keep this for another 23 years as long as parts are available and someday it actually might develop rust it will get a totally new paint job. Doubt very much there is a 01 black not garage kept that pretty much looks great as day one. Hell it still has the original factory carpet floor mats which still look like new.

  • @carlasghost656

    1:38 What happened here?
Chrysler, Chrysler is what happened. Somewhere around 1990 they changed the paint process. Almost all manufacturers had to because of new EPA rules. Some figured out how to get it right faster than others. Chrysler took the longest, their clear coating and painting process was abysmal through the 2000's.
At least it isn't as bad as the first generation Neons. They could lose anything from dime sized chips to most of a pannel just by driving through a carwash.

So I scanned the transcript. Video is usually a little slow for me. And yeah sorta. I don't tow much with half tons. They don't have the brakes or the full floating rear axle. I don't want the weight of the vehicle plus the forward weight in front of the trailer axle on my axle bearings. I know a lot of people do... but the 318 is plenty to pull those same trailers. Who cares if you get there 4 seconds later? I remember when 350's in Chevy's had less torque output and people towed with them. So anyway.
