- I just finished making some creamy Shea Butter body butter. Watch this behind-the-scenes video and maybe even follow along! Since my body butter is emulsified it survives summer heat really well! It really is great in all seasons. Makes a great handmade Christmas gift as well.

Free Recipe for Shea Body Butter:
360g Distilled Water
100g Liquid Aloe Vera
22g Glycerin
50g Avocado Oil
30g Sweet Almond Oil
10g Jojoba Oil
30g Coconut Oil
50g Shea Butter
34g Cocoa Butter
32g Cetyl Alcohol
43g Emulsified Wax
7g Preservative (1%)

Lovely consistency. This formulation is technically a cream lotion as it contains water. Body butters are anhydrous formulations. This means they contain no water and are comprised entirely of oils and butters. A preservative is usually not needed in body butters unless there is a chance that water might be introduced into the product. For example, using wet hands to apply the product or using it in the shower. The use of a antioxidant such as Vitamin E is highly recommended when making body butters as it will help to prolong the shelf life of the product. Vitamin E helps to prevent rancidity of. the oils and butters. Also, most if not all, preservatives have what is called a Flashpoint. This means they are only effective when used at the manufacturer's recommended temperature and below. If added above the recommended temperature they will 'burn off' and become ineffective. Again, the consistency of your finish product was amazing. As formulaters who are no longer novices, we often overlook the fact that people look to us for knowledge. A majority of these videos become tutorials whether or not they are meant to be.
Wonderful feedback, thank you so much! I love the idea of adding the Vitamin E. I will definitely try that. We market our "barrier cream consistency lotion" as a body butter to our customers because of the texture and because of the high content of wonderful butters. We steer away from the anhydrous version in the summer months here in southern California, because it's just too hot, and the butters will melt. An emulsified version is the perfect alternative. We always add the preservative at a temperature that will not burn off of course, because we want our products to fresh as long as possible.
Even with an anhydrous product it's still a wise choice to use a presevatives so incase a client keeps their product in the shower or bathroom and accidentally gets water in the butter as it doesn't take much for bacteria to grow! Not a chance I would want to take!

A lot of the big name bath and body stores market this similar recipe as a body butter. Most people prefer the word body butter over cream. This is a wonderful recipe thanks for sharing.

The 1st batch, I put it in the freezer, then whipped it. It never flufed up, but it was amaaaaaaaazing! The 2nd batch, I didn't put in the freezer, and it whiped and flufed up. It doubled in size. Exactly what I really wanted. And just as amazing, silky, non greasy... perfection! I originally thought I couldn't reach this stage with water as an ingredient. But I am in Heaven!! I made 9 large jars to give as gifts to some of my ladies at my wedding.

Wow. I just tried your recipe but I changed coconut oil to hempseed due to I live in Thailand and it’s hot and humid so I guess a bit of light oil might be better for my situation. You could totally add coconut milk. Just make sure it's diluted well, no flakes, and substitue for the water content.

I call mine a “body butter cream” and this year is 1st year I made it.. my body butters did not sell as well and I recreated a newer product for the customers. I truly believe that whether you use a water or not it's imperative that you use a preservative .... the last thing you want to have happen is for someone to have bought our products and something happen with their skin and or with the product!

I used to make mine like this but it ALWAYS turned out so grainy!!! I don’t know what I did wrong. I just do the normal whipped now, even though here in Queensland, Australia, it gets really hot and humid. I just got so sick of wasting so much ingredients.

I have batches I have tested from about two years ago, and it's still going strong. But, I typically put 12 months on my labels.

@@karimyyy4653 Hi! Shelf life is up to two years. When making any skin care product where water is added, a preservative is a must. The balance of emulsifiers to solid and liquid oils is up to you as the creator. Everyone has a different quality they are looking for in the texture of their product. That's the fun part of being a bath and body artisan. ;-)

This looks amazing I would want to try it out this weekend but is Cetyl alcohol need can I just use more Ewax (only because I don’t have cetyl alcohol) also will it still thicken up if I use like a kitchen aid instead of the hand mixer??
I would try a small batch with the Kitchen Aid, I am not sure if it will reach emulsion. Yes, you can substitute a bit of e-wax for the Cetyl Alcohol.

Yes, it does, it's more like a thick cream than a lotion.

Hello, I love your video and end result. I have emulsifying wax that’s a combination of Cetearyl Alcohol and Polysorbate 60. Do I still need the Separate cetyl alcohol to mix with my emulsion wax? Thank you!
Thank you! Not at all. Just replace it with additional eWax. I just like the feel of it with a little additional Cetyl alcohol. Smooths out the wax a bit.

If you want to make a body butter with water but thicker and a bit less 'loose' which ingredients would you add more of?

@Tyars Essentials Hello gorgeous, is the preservative used broad spectrum? In your previous reply to a comment about adding vitamin E, you've mentioned you'll try it. Have you? If so, when you added vitamin E, what was the percentage? Also can I use essential oils and place of the fragrance? If so, may you please provide the percentages Please and thank you 😊
I use optiphen. I am not sure of the percentages off hand. I'll have to work on that. ;-)

Thank you for this video as I was already starting to seek out how to make a body butter with water because straight body butter plus oils is just way too greasy! Even when I’ve added arrow root powder it just seems like it’s so greasy I couldn’t even feel good selling it!
I definitely feel like adding water actually expands your ingredients instead of using more of your rich butters and oils which is why I really want to make my body butter this way versus no water.
In my opinion people who are mixing straight body butter and oil and then selling it in a huge 8 ounce jar… I feel like they could sell that same body butter in half the size because of how rich it would be without water and consuming their dollars with the ingredients.
Especially for people like me who are making such small batches and I don’t have a lot of space in my apartment that I really just wanna buy ingredients off of Amazon which I know can be a little bit more expensive than if I were to buy an extreme bulk but I really can’t afford to pay for or even store butters and oils in multi gallon containers.
I would rather buy my supplies in 1 to 2 gallon increments and make small batches and really be able to not over make too much product and then have it sitting around even if it had a preservative in it because I personally don’t know yet if it’s going to sell
(because I’m starting out)
With that being said there are some items that I’m going to be making first to start my handmade skin care line that don’t require preservatives, but I really want to do the body butter with water and after seeing people make it this way on a couple of other videos it just seems easier to be melting the butter‘s with the oil so that you can mix it with water and then letting whip up
Versus.... what seems like 20 to 25 minutes worth of work in a butter at room temperature without melting.
if your body butter is to greasy your not using the rights oils or oil combinations. MY body butter absorbs into the skin minutes after using.
Check out the bulk apothecary for supplies they are much cheaper than Amazon. A good addition to straight butters and oil is corn starch or aero root powder. Corn starch feels a bit smoother and you don’t have the greasy feeling after applying.

AGREED! Even with arrowroot powder, the butters still feel greasy! I just want a lightweight whippy body butter that I can pipe in pretty colours and scents! This one looks amazing!
I would be interested if you could show how to dissolve Glycine powder into the distilled water and add Shea butter and Coconut oil into a cream application. I would also be curious if you could add Castor oil into that. Thanks.

Regarding water, how hot should the water be? As well as oils??
Mine are typically at 175 to 180 degrees.

Could you use aloe gel instead of liquid?
Not sure about the gel. But, you could blend up some filleted aloe in a juicer and it would work.

You can use Olive oil as they are both "similar" in terms of consistency.
There are multiple oils that can be used. Its just based off your personal preference. Search natural oils on google

Is a stick blender needed or can I use a hand mixer ?
You can try a small batch with a hand mixer. But, a stick blender definitely reaches emulsion faster.
So this won’t melt at all?
Think you could swap out coco butter for mango butter? Or add mango and cocoa butter to equal the same weight?
