    Thank you Beth for doing this reaction, you are awesome. I've always loved Nickelback no matter what people said about them. I honestly don't know why people don't like them, when i lived in Calgary Alberta the radio stations would brag about not playing Nickelback and would promote themselves as Nickelback haters. I thought it was the most disgusting thing i had ever seen and Albertans should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this to happen to such an awesome band. People wonder why Canadian bands move to the U.S to make it, well that in and of itself is part of the reason why.

    • @VivaLaDnDLogs

      My dislike comes from the fact that they are GOOD, Chad has an insanely good sound, but after a while the songs just became too repetitive. They could be so much better, but they play things too safe. It feels like they're squandering their talent for a quick buck.

    • @zeem3366
      @zeem3366 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@VivaLaDnDLogs So let me get this straight you don't like them because you feel they are squandering their talent, is that correct? Well the music industry and their managers play a huge role in what goes on records and what bands play because of what the music industry wants on the radio not what the band wants to play. But yet you like the band, you confuse me.

      @@ruffestneckaround I know right, it's disgusting and there is no need of it. The banners for the radio stations in the buses and c-trains all stated No Nickelback, which in my opinion should be sued for not playing the music to promote a hate culture against a certain group. The radio stations stopped playing Tom MacDonald when they found out he was independent and was a rapper and not a pop star with the song Ghost. That is biased and should illegal when they are playing freakin WAP on the radio for kids to hear.

    That demo you mentioned was sent into a local radio station called CFOX for a "battle of the bands" sort of thing and in I think it was '96 or '97 the Lower Mainland (Vancouver) was introduced to Fly and they won the contest and are now one of the biggest rockbands ever. Not bad a couple lads from Brooks Alberta. I used to see them in the small clubs and they would invite everyone to hang after the show to have a drink with them. Super cool guys.

    SunnyV2 did a great video explaining why theyre so hated actually. Essentially one of their songs hit such mainstream success that there wasn't a second that it wasn't playing on american radio for an entire year. Ontop of that, a comedian made a joke about how bad they were and it became a kind of meme, so those two things combined caused the massive swathe of hate they received.
    The bright side however is that in an interview, their drummer said that they actually liked the hate, because it kept them relevant for much longer and made them much more money!

    Nickelback was being "hated" before Rockstar. This song definitely elevated them, which made them a target to be hated in the "jump on the bandwagon" sense. Some people claim it was so overplayed that they started voicing their dislike of the band, including Brian Posehn on TV and supposedly Dave Grohl (though I think that was much later and might have been a jest thing if it even was him). As they grew in sales, somebody pointed out the similarities between this song and Someday, so now they are dubbed as unoriginal. Then they had a few raunchy songs, along with a few drinks/party songs, along with a few ballads, almost formulaic which didn't help. It was not Rockstar or Photograph, but they were definitely used as ammo and meme material. Once the internet had established them as the punching bag, because they were selling so well, it was all bandwagon and fitting in, as well as confirmation bias on every imperfect detail.

    My theory on the Nickelback hate is that they have consistently made 6/10 to 8/10 songs while never hitting a 10/10. They also made very middle of the road rock, basically radio quality mass market sounding. Or to put it another way they made girlfriend rock.
    I've never hated them, or even dunked on them. I think their version of the Devil went down to Georgia is genius.

    • @tomleonard830
      @tomleonard830 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly this. If they made actual bad music, then they wouldn’t be popular enough to dunk on. But because they made okay to good, but not great music- that puts them in the sweet spot for the music snobs to deride. And they were dog-piled on by people who wanted to sound like they had a refined musical taste, and later by people just hopping on to the meme.

      Their record company is like the Eagles when it comes to copyrights, most reaction videos get taken down, reactors have to be careful with their choice material. That doesn't mean Nickelback isn't an incredible band. She's reacting to 2006 Live from Sturgis, which is performed outside during one of the country's biggest bike rallies. There's some great footage from the event on YT. As for covers my top favorites are from 2007 VH1 Rock Honors where they covered Sharp Dressed Man by ZZ Top, and most recently Chad and Ryan covered Bryan Adams Summer of '69 this year at the Canadian hall of fame.

    Nickelback were mocked for a few years before Rockstar came out. They were pop grunge and piggybacking a bit on nu metal, so for those of us who were in the target demo for first wave grunge and slightly too old for nu mental, everything about them screamed inauthentic. Add to that the fact that rock radio played them ad nauseam for the first few years of the 00s and there was just no way that Gen Xers were going to take them seriously. Rockstar was released right when social media was taking offf and then the whole thing just became a meme.

    There is a nice documentary on youtube that explains how hating Nickelback became a thing. There is absolutely no real reason behind it. It was just one quote of a guy that was taken out of context, copied and repeated over and over again and somehow "I hate Nickelback" became a saying. It was meant to be funny at first, because it still had a sense of admiration in it, but over the time the saying lost the fun/admiration part. People are strange and victims of influence. I respect Nickelback for their music, success and endurance

    People shit on Nickelback and yet they are one of the most commercially successful bands of all time with a bunch of genuinely good songs (many of which are super fitting for the world today).
    I genuinely think the hate is just a meme and most people actually like them. Its the same bullshit as Titanic - "Oh its the worst" yet somehow sold more tickets than any other movie beating even Jurassic Park which was a cultural icon and then proceeded to hold that lead for TWELVE FUCKING YEARS. Not bad for a movie everyone claims to hate.
    Other Nickelback songs worth checking out are Burn It To The Ground and Edge of a Revolution. Tell me those songs arent PERFECT anthems for shit today.

  • @billsanderson1442

    My take on the hating is that they were writing and playing 70s style rock, which was considered 'dad' music when it was released. The fact that the songs are good and catchy means that my generation (boomers) also loved Nickelback. As an aside, Janet Devlin did an amazingly intimate cover that is excellent.

    Should cover the fact that he had a nose job and it changed his singing. He's got what i kinda call the Micheal Jackson effect going on with the super nasally pitch. Pretty interesting how much the nose affects the voice

    I think the reason people make fun of nickleback is cuz allegedly all their songs "sound the same" even though they really don't

    I am great with Nickleback! So Weezer could be categorized in that same way….

    THANK YOU! Nickelback is such a great band with their raw effects, heaviness, country vibes and Metallica riffs. One of my favorite bands of all time. Chad Kroeger's voice is so underrated and I also love that his voice is also very distinctive. You crushed it girl! Olivia Rodrigo doesn't got any rawness in her music and she's not even rock in my opinion.

    Hey, you should check "Triumph - Lay It On The Line - US Festival 1983". I bet it's going to surprise you. Absolutely underrated vocals.

    I wondered what the problem was about Nicklbacks music. People said their music went too “pop”. What I found was the problem was only with their reputation. Nickeback has always made four count, blues beat rock-n-roll. Yes, the songs are different, and necessarily so, because you can’t do the same thing over and over. Therefore the only thing that changed about then is, Popular Opinion. It was made popular to bag on Nickleback. All probably started by some sleazy recording producer or executive who was jealous of their success after not signing them. And most of America has followed the narrative instead of thinking for themselves.

    You obviously love the song right? I knoe your channel is about vocal analysis but i dont think you or anyone else can find any serious faults in his vocals...as a matter of fact thier quite good. So, what are you left with? Great song, really good voice and arrangement. Nuff said.

    Hm...ok Beth...glad you got into this. I did enjoy Rockstar simply because it was sarcastically funny but..they are not Nirvana by any stretch. The age divide is prevalent here I'm afraid. Regards 😊

    Love your channel so much @BethRoars! If you'd like another Canadian Band/Singer to react to, I'd recommend any Triumph song that Rik Emmett sings. Lay it on the Line is particularly excellent!

    They get hated on for the most part from what i can see from s that they’re from a small town in Alberta. Nothing big is supposed to come from a small town and they did. People hate the fact that small towns can have real talent vs big crappy cities

    They got made fun of mainly for Photograph, Rockstar was tongue and cheek. It was showing how messed up the entertainment industry had become at the time... not that it's improved much.
