His fills are drumming genius. The double bass drums add so much more to the original recording. Getting Portnoy for a Nickleback show would be like renting a Ferrari to go to the local shop.

@@BaconIsNotBicepsI can name you a lot of their songs. The band is actually very very good. The reason people hate Nickelback is not because they don’t like their songs it’s because people are sheep. People hate them without knowing why or listening to their songs. An American comedian one day said on a tv show or podcast that he thought Nickelback were shit. That was the defining moment and people randomly thought they hated them as well.

Mike definitely added some cool elements to it. LOVE the double bass and the toms he added! The Toms could actually fit and not take away from the songs feel. But, I'll just say this as my opinion. Never forget the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) rule. It's hard to actually do and have it sound good. This song, and watching this video, really proves that rule. The single pumping bass kicks keep the songs energy "Pumping" and moving along which actually makes it easier for most people, who are not musicians, to tap their feet to it and feel the songs energy and vibe. I'm sure there were takes in the studio with Nickelback where they had more complex parts and maybe even a double bass in the arrangement. But that's why you get a producer, Robert John "Mutt" Lange in this case, who can help with this. Obviously Lange's record speaks for itself.

The Best cover ever, are you agree?... NB needs a MP, the original drums sounds so simple to me. My humble opinion.

Poor Nickleback... 😆 They're actually a pretty decent rock band but they do take a lot of flack for their multi platinum tendencies 😂.
I definitely preferred Mike's interpretation though. That ending is pretty weird for sure . Really abrupt.

Not a fan of Nickelback but glad they are at least moving on from that poppy garbage they started with. Just my opinion.

I've never listened to Nickelback (nothing against them) but have been a Portnoy/DT fan for 40-years, so I prefer Mike's take to the original. I found the original bland and mundane. Mikes was creative, full and rockin. As for him being back with Dream Theater - ABOUT FUCKING TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😉😉🤣🤣

I actually like Nickleback. They aren't that bad. I also loved Dream Theater. But i'm probably in the minority, I actually prefer the orginal drums that Nickleback did. Don't get me wrong I LOVE Mike, but in this 1 case, I prefer Nicklebacks drums. Although I liked the bridge and his double bass better.

I never heard it either... granted, I avoid nickleback like the plague. I'm still trying to forget that photograph song. Lol

Haha i fucking loved this ;). Mike Portnoy just had soooo much fun with that song... 20 out of 10 from me :).

Funny cause in my opinion his “1st time improvisation” was a cooler part than the actual recorded drums. And I’m not hating cause I genuinely like this song as it is, as well as playing it on my drums too, but Mike’s style & flair was just cool as fuck haha

Yeah the nickelback hate is basically fanboy hate IMO. They are a great band & got some heavy songs. I keep waiting to see them at festival.

Guys...we are talking about the worlds best dummer mmmkayyy??? He won "best drummer" multiple times for a reason and is in the best band on earth again: Dream Theater!
So in fact, he is not with Dream Theater NOW, like you said! He is a member in our hearts for more than 25 years and he's back baby.

Mike owns this song! So much better than the original (and, like Mike, I have never heard it). His fills and double bass are spot on!🤘

Mike's version was like a deep full flavored coffee and the original is more like coffee flavored hot water. Bad analogy? Perhaps
I like the original but now my ears have tasted a better brew. I'm ok with going back to the coffee that I can afford but I "Dream Theater" of the coffee that I wish for.
    Great Vid thumbs up!
