I like that you mentioned Mariah's artistry, people don't seem to realize how much work she puts in the studio to make her songs the way they are. She sings, writes, and produces them and is one hundred percent one of the best artists of all time.
Mariah is such a hard worker, in 32 years of her career, there's like 2 years where she rested and didn't release so many things. And she participates in basically every step of the process to create her music and I truly admire her for that. Whitney's head voice is just perfect, she can be loud, soft, operatic. It's my hv favorite of all time.

The reason why I love Mariah is not all the technicalities. The riffs, runs, vocal acrobatics and all that. It's her tone. She has a naturally beautiful singing voice. Along with that is her ability to make beautiful melodies when she's writing her songs that perfectly compliment her voice.
She’s lost her tone. Her recent performance (Global Citizen) was a letdown. After hearing her say “my voice is rested. I got it back” during the pandemic, only to hear her sound the way she did, a few days ago, it’s over. I thought she sounded good, during the Caution tour, for modern day, Mariah. She recently said it damaged her voice. If not touring and sitting at home, for two years, didn’t help, it’s over. 😔

Whitney's also the most phenomenal live performer I've ever seen. While Mariah and Celine give you studio like vocals in their live performances, Whitney goes beyond and immerses herself into her songs so much that she takes them elsewhere, every single time. It is almost like she's having an out of body spiritual experience, when you see her take a song to church. She forgets she's on stage, when she gets to singing her heart out. It's crazy. It's awe inspiring.
I agree, Whitney "channels" her songs, especially the gospel ones, she doesn't merely sing them. Her live performances of "I Love the Lord" are a great example, absolutely spine tingling and close to transcending into another realm. Very few others can do that.

They are like *The Charmed Ones* of the music industry. They excel as vocalists and each of them brings something unique to the Vocal Trinity. Three technically brilliant vocalists. I highly doubt that there will be another Vocal Trinity (at least not anytime soon). We barely even have vocalists whose voices are focal points of their careers ie. Their artistry is primary reliant on their technical and vocal mastery. This is a lovely & fitting tribute to *The Vocal Trinity* ✨ *P.S.* I know Whitney and Celine didn't use their whistle registers as much but Mariah's excellent use of the register should have been highlighted a tad more. Especially considering that she utilizes it just as the other registers are used for expression while singing and a display of vocal & technical prowess. In her case, it's not merely a parlor trick plus it's really difficult to use it excellently and consistently in numerous live settings.
I think Tori Kelly, Morisette Amon, Ariana Grande and Faouzia are the only singers (of my generation at least who I can think off the top of my head) who are known at least as much ( if not more) of their vocals than their songs. But all three of them are slept on hard…

Taylor Dayne and Toni Braxton could easily be counted as peers of the Trinity in terms of vocal skill and talent, but they never managed to have the longlasting commercial dominance that the Trinity achieved.

All three have long since achieved (and totally deserve) legend status, but only one makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and that's Whitney. Her gospel performances (A Quiet Place, This Day, I Love The Lord, etc.) are truly on another level. She doesn't sing them, she channels them through her soul straight down from the heavens. It is almost a spiritual experience. She had a certain kind of magic in her voice, and I do miss her terribly!
Mariah. Melodious. Musical. Vocal colors. Her music really suits my taste. She can do extremely difficult ballads, can do RnB/pop/dance to bring u on the dancefloor, and gospel to bring u to the church. Whitney and Celine on the other hand, for me, would always be considered the more belter type of singers. They're about sustaining long high belts, slow songs, more of adult contemporary style.
They’re all incredible. They’re all the best singers the world has ever seen. But Mariah will always be my favorite. Too me, I don’t think their has ever been a vocalist that was as technically skilled as she was. Her runs, agility, and range especially. Not to mention her somewhat underrated lower register. Will never be matched to the level she was on in the 90s. Sure her voice has deteriorated greatly in the past 10-15 years. But boy in her day, she was unmatched. Whenever I hear Mariah's voice it feels like I'm living in cosmic places hahaha! her voice is like a Universe composed of billions of stars hahaha! What is constant with the three ladies for me are their undeniable impressive talent and music. Mariah Carey's Daydream will forever be my most favorite pop album whereas Butterfly as my second most favorite R&B album (Brandy's Never Say Never is my first) and my second most favorite female singer-songwriter ever, only second to Joni Mitchell. Whitney Houston's Whitney (album) is one of the only few albums that i can listen to from front to back and it still holds dear to my heart after so many years. And Celine Dion's A New Day Has Come features some of my most favorite pop tracks that i've heard growing up and i still do love them a lot. Her 1995's groundbreaking D'eux album is probably the first and one of the only French albums that i listen to with lush production quality and topnotch songwriting. Celine's vocal longevity is due to the woman's insane technical proficiency, you can question whatever you want when it comes to her music but never her vocal abilities, Celine is the most skilled/proficient vocalist of the trinity without a doubt while Mariah and Whitney have the artistry side, Celine has both the technical and artistry parts, she worked her ass off to have such consistency, and studied the art of singing, she worked with the best vocal teachers to preserve her gift, she had deeply love and respect for singing, she invested so much time in being a vocalist in all the extension of the word, that's why till this day she keeps on achieving success and being labeled as one of the greatest vocalists without being questioned, no matter how much the delusional fans of we already know who want to discredit her.

All three of these ladies have tip top technique for pop singing. The difference is not the technique, it's more health and wellness for vocal preservation. Celine, of all the three, has lived the healthiest life to say the least.

Resting her voice when she should, not partaking in lifestyle habits that ruin the voice, adapting her technique as she aged eg. Mixing with a lighter approach as she aged etc.
Celine is all three imo. Understanding and delivering on those impossible, unexpected arrangements is artful. She explores diverse sounds, genres, and emotions. I easily imagine the scenarios and places she sings about, and it just feels romantical and somber and exciting. IDK how someone paints an aesthetic with their voice, but she's always done it. And it's like she really means everything she sings about. You know how when a singer is not a songwriter, they can have a song now and then where it's just not convincing that they grasp that experience or use those words in that way. Celine can have a crazy ass intro with bongos and I'm just like, "Here she go again lol." Perhaps the only time I was like, "You could have kept that" is Rain, Tax. I guess I'm saying that Celine is very imaginative to put herself within these different head spaces, like an actress.
The thing about Celine, is I just can't ever tell if I actually like her voice. I love her presence and her use of vocal technique. That's what I like about her. Her technique is enough to make up for a voice that doesn't stand out by itself. Each of these 3 singers are excellent in completely different ways. It's pretty awesome.

The people who don't believe Whitney was a Soprano tend to be the people who over-rely on her Mezzo-ish timbre to define a voice type. I think contemporary singing has shown that range and timbre can be verrry different things. In my view, her thundering high notes and surprisingly tame lower register made her an obvious Soprano but it's weird that people go solely by timbre.
I think she was very much a soprano early on, but a mezzo later (like mid to late Nineties and onward later). She sang pretty regularly in the fifth octave early on but much less so and much less capably in her later years; her timbre was also weightier by then.

However I tend to feel that people oversimplify the relationship between vocal weight and vocal pitch. I've noticed that a lot of people inaccurately classify African American voices based on "size" even if we sing MUCH higher. Jhud & Aretha come to mind. Jhud & Aretha can belt an entire Octave over Taylor Swift and still people will call them "Mezzo" and call Taylor a "Soprano" lol

You are right though that African American voices (namely female ones) tend to be fuller, even huskier than white voices, and thus are often typed as lower than they are. When a heavy voice is raised upward in pitch though, it may stay very thick while still gaining comfort as it elevates in pitch.

As far as operatically, her voice would definitely translate to soprano, but must her voice be considered in that way, especially being that she hasn’t sung beyond A5 from what I can tell, nor any operatic arias?

I agree with you partially because technically they were all the complete package. Mariah will always have fans of varying generations because her catalog is the most diverse. She explored and blended a wide range of genres, and she makes quality records that stand the test of time...they always sound fresh (except for some ballads - you can tell they're throwbacks). That Whitney she was the epitome of a singer ... the confidence, poise, stage presence... every movement or expression she makes seems perfectly planned. No akward hand or arm movements and swinging. She was always a pleasure to watch on stage... she was in complete control at all times especially in the 90s, the stage revolved around her cues at all times the band was hers to control. There was a angel in her throat. Celine is the definition of perfection. Technicality at its finest. She could execute any note flawlessly. There was a machine in her throat. I love them. I love to see how they are on another level of greatness. I'm Mariah's fan because I love how versatile her voice is and also how involved she is in her music. Just measure the amount of note changes the singer can execute per period of time, and you should have a good MEASURE of agility without regard to music type. How many notes can they squeeze in one second? That should give a good baseline of how agile, how skilled they are at weaving between notes. It is in this regards that Mariah excels at, she is so fast that you need to SLOW down the footage to count the number of notes she was executing, all the while maintaining PRECISION and CONTROL. But once again, a very INTELLIGENT and WELL-PRESENTED video man!

Quite a bit of inaccuracies in the video. Her instrument is about the same size as Whitney. They just sang very differently. Also, both of they timbres were naturally brighter than Mariah's. I think Celine from 90s does even have more depth and power than 80s Whitney. If she was a mezzo her voice should be close as depth as Whitney. but Whitney 90s is the darkest and one of the darkest voices in music history.

As a Mariah fan I know her voice isn't as good as it once was but I still think she can sing really nice especially her lower register. IDK how to explain I think she just isn't confident enough singing live anymore but her videos on her Instagram she sounds good like for example during the pandemic she did a video singing her song "Stay the Night" and her vocals were so strong.

Nah, she has definitely had some riffs, runs and ad libs that did not complement the melody. A quick example that comes to mind is her performance of "Amazing Grace" (In South Africa, I believe). They are all artists, to a degree however Mariah excels the most. I mean did any of them write and co-produce most of their music? Plus out of all of them, she is the one who evolved the most musically. That's what he means by artistry. Her voice is mainly for her artistry whilst Whitney's artistry is mainly for her voice. I feel like Mariah never gets enough credit for her headvoice. It's always the same clip of her that's used in these videos for her headvoice, but there are so much more moments of her using it and sounding amazing while she's singing too. Her headvoice is well connected and she's able to hold notes and make runs in it, on top of that, she's able to change its texture to give it a different feel. Sometimes it's airy, sometimes it has more of a metallic feel to it, and sometimes it's powerful. Putting that same clip of her really sells her head voice short.
Whitney's head voice is so incredible- the agility and clarity are unmatched. I like that you mentioned Mariah's artistry, people don't seem to realize how much work she puts in the studio to make her songs the way they are. She sings, writes, and produces them and is one hundred percent one of the best artists of all time.
Mariah is such a hard worker, in 32 years of her career, there's like 2 years where she rested and didn't release so many things. And she participates in basically every step of the process to create her music and I truly admire her for that.
Whitney's head voice is just perfect, she can be loud, soft, operatic. It's my hv favorite of all time.

The reason why I love Mariah is not all the technicalities. The riffs, runs, vocal acrobatics and all that. It's her tone. She has a naturally beautiful singing voice. Along with that is her ability to make beautiful melodies when she's writing her songs that perfectly compliment her voice.

She’s lost her tone. Her recent performance (Global Citizen) was a letdown. After hearing her say “my voice is rested. I got it back” during the pandemic, only to hear her sound the way she did, a few days ago, it’s over. I thought she sounded good, during the Caution tour, for modern day, Mariah. She recently said it damaged her voice. If not touring and sitting at home, for two years, didn’t help, it’s over. 😔

Whitney's also the most phenomenal live performer I've ever seen. While Mariah and Celine give you studio like vocals in their live performances, Whitney goes beyond and immerses herself into her songs so much that she takes them elsewhere, every single time.
It is almost like she's having an out of body spiritual experience, when you see her take a song to church. She forgets she's on stage, when she gets to singing her heart out.

In her case, it's not merely a parlor trick plus it's really difficult to use it excellently and consistently in numerous live settings.

Taylor Dayne and Toni Braxton could easily be counted as peers of the Trinity in terms of vocal skill and talent, but they never managed to have the longlasting commercial dominance that the Trinity achieved.
I love Celine's stage presence. She's the only ballad singer that really makes you wanna dance and be the craziest version of yourself.

All three have long since achieved (and totally deserve) legend status, but only one makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and that's Whitney.
Her gospel performances (A Quiet Place, This Day, I Love The Lord, etc.) are truly on another level. She doesn't sing them, she channels them through her soul straight down from the heavens. It is almost a spiritual experience. She had a certain kind of magic in her voice, and I do miss her terribly!

She can do extremely difficult ballads, can do RnB/pop/dance to bring u on the dancefloor, and gospel to bring u to the church. Whitney and Celine on the other hand, for me, would always be considered the more belter type of singers. They're about sustaining long high belts, slow songs, more of adult contemporary style.
They’re all incredible. They’re all the best singers the world has ever seen. But Mariah will always be my favorite. Too me, I don’t think their has ever been a vocalist that was as technically skilled as she was. Her runs, agility, and range especially. Not to mention her somewhat underrated lower register. Will never be matched to the level she was on in the 90s. Sure her voice has deteriorated greatly in the past 10-15 years. But boy in her day, she was unmatched. What is constant with the three ladies for me are their undeniable impressive talent and music. Mariah Carey's Daydream will forever be my most favorite pop album whereas Butterfly as my second most favorite R&B album (Brandy's Never Say Never is my first) and my second most favorite female singer-songwriter ever, only second to Joni Mitchell. Whitney Houston's Whitney (album) is one of the only few albums that i can listen to from front to back and it still holds dear to my heart after so many years. And Celine Dion's A New Day Has Come features some of my most favorite pop tracks that i've heard growing up and i still do love them a lot. Her 1995's groundbreaking D'eux album is probably the first and one of the only French albums that i listen to with lush production quality and topnotch songwriting. All in all, Whitney, Mariah and Celine are the epitome of talent and timelessness that have tremendously impacted the growth of the music industry 🥰.

Celine's vocal longevity is due to the woman's insane technical proficiency, you can question whatever you want when it comes to her music but never her vocal abilities, Celine is the most skilled/proficient vocalist of the trinity without a doubt while Mariah and Whitney have the artistry side, Celine has both the technical and artistry parts, she worked her ass off to have such consistency, and studied the art of singing, she worked with the best vocal teachers to preserve her gift, she had deeply love and respect for singing, she invested so much time in being a vocalist in all the extension of the word, that's why till this day she keeps on achieving success and being labeled as one of the greatest vocalists without being questioned, no matter how much the delusional fans of we already know who want to discredit her.
Oh yeah i 100% wholeheartedly agree with you, despite being discredited and minimised by the kpopvocalanalysis, Celine is one of the best classical and theater based pop vocalists in history, her voice just fulfills any vocal aspect, technically she's a beast and i can't think of any other contemporary singer who has her incredible ability to motive and serve, she has the true ring and chest voice of a real vocalist, i mean a pure opera and theater singer, not every theather/opera can sing popular music as well as she does while she can do both, she has this huge consistency in both of her belting and mixed register, healthy, grounded and balanced, a connected and full lower register, amazingly developed head voice fully operatic, incredible accuracy of melismas/dynamics, and such sense of proper vocal agility, she's an agile and versatile vocalist, that alone explains why the woman is an enigmatic performer as well, the center of the stage is her voice and as she can do many things with it both technically and artistically makes her the most vocally centered out of them 3 on stage and in off stage too, i do think Whitney and Mariah have some great/incredible abilities as well like Whitney's head voice/power and Mariah's whistle register/agility, i still think other things they can do Celine can do it just as well and with much more consistency, and that's something i won't discuss cause i know it's true from a vocal pedagogy standpoint, and of course with the amount of miseducation that flows in youtube's beat, i won't be wasting my time with biased/uneducated people either. Resting her voice when she should, not partaking in lifestyle habits that ruin the voice, adapting her technique as she aged eg. Mixing with a lighter approach as she aged etc.
Celine is all three imo. Understanding and delivering on those impossible, unexpected arrangements is artful. She explores diverse sounds, genres, and emotions. And it's like she really means everything she sings about. You know how when a singer is not a songwriter, they can have a song now and then where it's just not convincing that they grasp that experience or use those words in that way. Celine can have a crazy ass intro with bongos and I'm just like, "Here she go again lol." Perhaps the only time I was like, "You could have kept that" is Rain, Tax. I guess I'm saying that Celine is very imaginative to put herself within these different head spaces, like an actress.

The thing about Celine, is I just can't ever tell if I actually like her voice. I love her presence and her use of vocal technique. That's what I like about her. Her technique is enough to make up for a voice that doesn't stand out by itself. Each of these 3 singers are excellent in completely different ways. It's pretty awesome.

The people who don't believe Whitney was a Soprano tend to be the people who over-rely on her Mezzo-ish timbre to define a voice type. I think contemporary singing has shown that range and timbre can be verrry different things. In my view, her thundering high notes and surprisingly tame lower register made her an obvious Soprano but it's weird that people go solely by timbre.
I think she was very much a soprano early on, but a mezzo later (like mid to late Nineties and onward later). She sang pretty regularly in the fifth octave early on but much less so and much less capably in her later years; her timbre was also weightier by then.

You are right though that African American voices (namely female ones) tend to be fuller, even huskier than white voices, and thus are often typed as lower than they are. When a heavy voice is raised upward in pitch though, it may stay very thick while still gaining comfort as it elevates in pitch.

As far as operatically, her voice would definitely translate to soprano, but must her voice be considered in that way, especially being that she hasn’t sung beyond A5 from what I can tell, nor any operatic arias?

I love all of them but the reason I go towards Mariah is because of her musical creativity and involvement in most of her songs! Writing and Producing makes her song feel more special.

That Whitney she was the epitome of a singer ... the confidence, poise, stage presence... every movement or expression she makes seems perfectly planned. No akward hand or arm movements and swinging. She was always a pleasure to watch on stage... she was in complete control at all times especially in the 90s, the stage revolved around her cues at all times the band was hers to control. There was a angel in her throat.
Celine is the definition of perfection. Technicality at its finest. She could execute any note flawlessly. There was a machine in her throat.
Mariah is extremely unique. Very few singers can do the things she does. She had a seismograph in her throat, she could jump anywhere at any time. That cant be recreated to her extent, no matter how many people try.
I love them. I love to see how they are on another level of greatness. I'm Mariah's fan because I love how versatile her voice is and also how involved she is in her music. But I LOVE Whitney and Celine too. It's like you said in another video of the vocal trinity: When you reach some level of excellence the differences become less evident. It's all a preference choice.

Just measure the amount of note changes the singer can execute per period of time, and you should have a good MEASURE of agility without regard to music type. How many notes can they squeeze in one second? That should give a good baseline of how agile, how skilled they are at weaving between notes. It is in this regards that Mariah excels at, she is so fast that you need to SLOW down the footage to count the number of notes she was executing, all the while maintaining PRECISION and CONTROL. But once again, a very INTELLIGENT and WELL-PRESENTED video man!

Quite a bit of inaccuracies in the video. Her instrument is about the same size as Whitney. They just sang very differently. Also, both of they timbres were naturally brighter than Mariah's. Why do people still insists that Whitney had this big, dark, heavier set voice? It's clear as day to my ears she was a very high and bright soprano.

I think Celine from 90s does even have more depth and power than 80s Whitney. If she was a mezzo her voice should be close as depth as Whitney. but Whitney 90s is the darkest and one of the darkest voices in music history.

As a Mariah fan I know her voice isn't as good as it once was but I still think she can sing really nice especially her lower register. IDK how to explain I think she just isn't confident enough singing live anymore but her videos on her Instagram she sounds good like for example during the pandemic she did a video singing her song "Stay the Night" and her vocals were so strong.
Mariah served us different genres in our lifetime. Different albums offering different feels. Aside from the fact that she has the most angelic voice in the industry, that makes her standout than others. But of course i love the trinity but i will always choose MC end of day ❤
I am a fan of these three divas and they influenced me in my singing journey. Celine is my favorite because of her incredible belts and resonance. There's a powerful conviction in every song she sings. I love Whitney because her voice, ugh! It's incomparable. Mariah's variety of vocal styles such as runs, riffs, whistle, melismas amazes me a lot. Her voice is insane.

Idea of Whitney being a “natural singer” and not a thinker or musician needs to end. It’s a racist notion that was attached to Black artist especially athletes who were thought to be “naturally gifted” so they didn’t have to use IQ. Nah, she has definitely had some riffs, runs and ad libs that did not complement the melody. A quick example that comes to mind is her performance of "Amazing Grace" (In South Africa, I believe).
They are all artists, to a degree however Mariah excels the most. I mean did any of them write and co-produce most of their music? Plus out of all of them, she is the one who evolved the most musically.

You talk about Mariah Carey lip-syncing after 13 dates and 7 years, as if she those were the only times she performed live and didn't have countless studio recordings as she was coming up with her own music. Mariah had a significant hand in actually creating what she sang, so Tommy Mottola had her in the studio most of the time creating. Whitney didn't have a hand in what she sang so Clive had her on the road non stop.

I feel like Mariah never gets enough credit for her headvoice. It's always the same clip of her that's used in these videos for her headvoice, but there are so much more moments of her using it and sounding amazing while she's singing too. Her headvoice is well connected and she's able to hold notes and make runs in it, on top of that, she's able to change its texture to give it a different feel. Sometimes it's airy, sometimes it has more of a metallic feel to it, and sometimes it's powerful. Putting that same clip of her really sells her head voice short.
