Thank you for thoroughly explaining bullet pointing. I do not shoot competitively but I have always been a bit curious about the process and the results. I have property access to shoot over a mile and so I have been using Berger 190gr in my 28 Nosler with a longer freebore. I am happy ring a 24" plate at a mile and so I still wouldn't reap the benefits of pointing. It's not worth the expense and work.
I feel you're correct on the distance factor on the tipping. I saw no advantage at 600 yards so I gave my Whidden die (which I really didn't like) to a friend to use. He goes to 1K matches and he is a reloading geek and likes it. I reload because I like to shoot, he reloads because he enjoys intricacies of it. Being a Gunsmith I have alot of people come in wanting to sell reloading and shooting items. When I get in some weird reloading tool that I have no intersest in, I know who to call. I personally have cut back on the amount of shooting I'm doing because the range here in So. Orygun I was shooting at has a person running it who is a less than enjoyable to be around and does not run a good program and attendance is dwindling so I have better things to do than tip toe around them to be able to shoot 600 yards and it's expensive to shoot these days so I shoot where I get the most enjoyment and bang for my buck.
You failed to mention the most important part of the story. There are several fundamental mistakes you can make while pointing bullets. You can damage really good bullets out of the box by pointing them incorrectly.
I’m guessing I’m not the only fellow Washingtonian here, just a reminder the current legislation forming an AWB is currently in the state senate after passing the house. Actual phone calls are really effective but emails and actual letters are good too. Tuesday there is a public hearing on the bill to make FFL’s responsible for criminal misuse of firearms. Every voice is necessary.
@@dwightlaney6059 well the analogy is that Costco/Safeway/etc. would be the manufacturers of spirituous beverages like manufacturers of arms are protected at the federal level. Yes Remington was sued out of business but the case never made it to court as the company that bought Remington chose to settle instead of fighting for righteousness.

I don't. That doesn't mean there isn't some potential improvement in materials properties available. I just haven't noticed any difference between when I do and when I don't let them cool out completely over a few hours.

I'm shooting a 6mm creedmoor and it seems like my pressure with 39.9 gr in 34 degrees is equal to a 40.4 charge when I shoot it at 62 degrees. Should the pressures be changing that much with h 4350? Thanks
I did load development in 28 to 34 degrees. I shoot berger vld hunting bullets. Did a powder test .015 in the lands with 39.9 being the charge of choice. No pressure signs / vertical stringing until I got 40.4. Then did seating depths test and .020 to .015 off shot .16 inch groups @100. At 500 in 62 degrees showed pressure with vertical stringing, so it left me scratching my head
I have yet to find a bullet that couldn't benefit from sorting. It's a matter of context. I certainly don't bother for hunting or short-range stuff. I just load out of the box for those.
What about just trimming the meplat for uniformity? Hunting bullets such as Berger 6.5 156 EOL have uneven tips/holes. Would it only be worth doing 600yd and over like your saying?
All open tip bullets are ragged at the end. Trimming will reduce BC for sure (I tested this). It might improve consistency, but I haven't done enough testing of that to know how much it does or doesn't.
Do you have any videos on load density in correlation to seating depth ? I have a 3006 load that puts in the same hole at 34* at 100yrds ( if I do my part ). 180 gr Sierra pro hunter at .069” jump over 52.5 gr of w760 with a cci250 and a Nosler case. I’m wanting a 165 gr to do the same thing but I’m have troubles. Thanks.
@@winninginthewind I see now that my comment was too inclusive for bullet styles. It should have only included the rbt. Because of the sharp angles involved and the material being thinned in that area during production, the jacket will push back shifting the bto back.

Do not hunt animals with otm bullets as they are not designed to mushroom like bonded or copper expanding bullets. Otm bullets will easily shatter and only wound elk etc if you hit their shoulder blade
This would be a great experiment. Pointed vs non-pointed bullets at 500, 1000 & 1500 yds.

Measure meplat size with a base to ogive comparator before and during pointing process making sure not to deform base of bullet.
A little testing might show the limits of how much deformation is ok, and how much is too much.

Interesting. I just shoot A-Tips. Barrels seem to like them and the time vs money trade off isn't there for me.

They do, on certain, newer bullets. It can save time and effort if your rifle likes them.

Don’t point rbt or boat tail unless you have a support for the bullet tail. Otherwise the base will deform
If you use too much pressure, yes. I point boattail bullets all the time with nothing but positive results.

Why do you believe Imperial wax is bad in your necks. I use it on my bullet bases before I seat with good success.
Just shoot ELD-M, ELD-X, A-TIP, etc.
