One of the best games I have ever played and beautiful memories playing this with my Brother Shan, he passed away 2 years ago in his sleep, and today would be his 42nd bithday. Miss you big brother, and thanks for the great memories with super double dragon. If anyone has not given this game a try, i would recommend it.

I have the Super Famicom Version. It's sick that the spin kick hits your enemy multiple times. An ending would be nice, but the game play is pretty great. Everyone points out the block mechanic, it doesn't work on half the characters, but I beat this game on hard mode the first time that I played it, and still go back to it. Fun game for sure

The Japanese version (Return of Double Dragon) had lots of changes: The music is is in proper order, rather than shuffled around (Mission 5 plays the Double Dragon theme in Super Double Dragon), The final stage is longer (has two sections before the final boss), has options mode, weapons do less damage, and has different enemy placement.

After Final Fight 3, this ranks among my fave fighters on the SNES. I love how technical it is, how one wrong move sees you getting the shit kicked out of you. There's no way to block anything if you're not ready and it feels a lot closer to real fighting then the walk, kill everything, walk of most scrollers. Add to that the beautiful graphics and this is a master showcase of arcade gaming on our beloved system.

I'm actually surprised by the amount of love for this game in the comments. I rented it one time with my buddy back in junior high and although it wasn't horrible, it was certainly one I didn't bother renting again.
In the 30 years since, every time I revisit it on an emulator, I am reminded just how bad it is, especially in comparison to Final Fight, Turtles In Time and Streets of Rage, all of which took that torch and ran with it. They all refined the beat-em-up formula so well that they ended up leaving the original innovator in the dust.
Double Dragon 1 and 2 were fairly good on NES, but between III and Super, this franchise was old news by '92. I tried it again last night and it is a slog.

This is one of my favorite games.. and beat em ups. I like the fact that unlike other beat em ups (like final fight or other like this one) when you hit an enemy every hit they react differently depending on how you attack them its not like hitting a just a sack like those other games. So this adds a little bit of strategy and playing multiplayer makes it more fun. But it isnt perfect clearly.. like you mentioned the speed is kinda slow, I would fix that with adding a run button (there are two shoulder button using the sam thing) or double tapping the d pad like in DD3. And yes.. there are very few enemies. DD3 team movements also would've been a great addition. My personal favorite is the japanese version.

My brothers and I were huge fans of Double Dragon II, so we rented this one immediately upon seeing it. At first, we were underwhelmed by the artwork, which wasn't nearly as eye-catching as Final Fight. However, we quickly realized that the game was unparalleled in options for badassery. The whole night was just accidental discovery. "Holy crap, check this out!" There was mounds of visceral satisfaction in catching an enemy's punch, back kicking his friend into submission and then hurling one guy at the other. Also, dem nunchucks...

      From Romhacking.net
      www.romhacking.net/hacks/3288/
      - The Dragon Power Meter now increases 33% faster.
      - Billy and Jimmy’s basic attacks (just pressing punch or kick) are now two frames faster for better responsiveness.
      - Blocking is no longer timed. It is done just by holding the blocking button, in the fashion of other games like Mortal Kombat or Soul Calibur.
      - If the defense button is held when another move is finished, will start blocking immediately. The blocking condition is not the button press, but the button hold.
      - Blocking while holding a weapon will now drop it and enter the “defensive” mode.
      - The R button is now used for blocking, instead of increasing the Dragon Power Meter.

  • @hrvallejoMKT
    @hrvallejoMKT 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The gameplay is what makes this DD stand out and at the same time is what some players hated because of the technicalities. In essence, now there's "fight choreography" and you just don't mash buttons, but the brothers are specialized to attack and defend with a variety of forms and this made the experience kinda like an interactive fighting movie (which was incredibly exciting for me back then, because I already loved movies or anything that had more elaborated fighting).
Muneki Ebinuma, Koji Ogata, Naritaka Nishimura are credited behind this mechanic.
Ebinuma you might know to have recorded live-choreography movement for the Yakuza 3 game, Fist of the North Star (Lost Paradise) and has actually being a Planner for the OG DD games. Ogata for the graphic stuff and Nishimura for coding them. It's a three guy team doing something extremely memorable for a beloved franchise!

Man I freaking LOVE this game!. And yes, I am biased. This was my very first SNES game, and the moment I saw the colors of that opening stage, and the music started blasting, I knew it was worth it (had to save for quite a while to get the SNES). Then the first three enemies kicked my butt and I lost a life just like that ¨Huh?!¨. Yeah, the blocking mechanic is a core part of this. The wide range of combat moves is also a big plus. The button arrangement works great.
It took up until my 3rd playthrough until I started to realize that the game was a little... incomplete. No story, barely an ending... what are you even fighting for?. And yet, the combat is so tight that I don´t really mind. There are a ton of mods out there that add a lot of polish, including cutscenes, but the original works perfectly as a ¨The 100% action version -No Extra Bullshit¨. Insert cartridge, press start a couple times and BAM! you are kicking ass (or not, depending how fast you get the block timing).

Ruudos yea the games had simply a good challenge it wasn't even the hardest of the games back then. I find that alot of modern gamers who ether were too young to play games back in the 80s and 90s or simply weren't born complain alot about these games that simply give a good challenge. I mean I beat this game at age 10 lol how hard could it have been I was in elementary school! Pansy ass candy ass gamers whining!

Double Dragon 2 was my personal favorite. Double Dragon 3 At first I was quite annoyed the fact that you have only one life but after awhile the game grew on me and i realized you can earn three lives after fighting off those two bosses. But looking back now I can see that the gameplay went left from the other Double Dragon sequels.

jaythehumble keys I will agree it's the most different one and double Dragon 2 was my favorite one too but I still enjoyed part 3

DD3 is without a doubt my fave on nes, simply because if felt more like a real beat'em up , rather than an action platformer, also no one seems to mention how much the music is great...and yes, u have 3 lives if u count the other heroes, and it becomes easy when u know how to deal with each enemy....people just don't bother to learn and adapt....DD2 was cool but DD3 is what i like the most....especially that ending music :)

As a major fan of DD since my childhood, through all the NES games I've owned, traded, and sold DD 1-3 are the only games I've consistently owned. I love all three original NES games, the second being my favorite. BUT, Super Double Dragon bites the big one!!!!!!!!!!!! I've really tried to love this game, and when I first got an SNES it was the first game that I bought. Really, I got very tired of trying so hard to love a game that is just a trudge through redundant enemies who have virtually the same patterns and take forever to kill. Special moves? Come on! The spin kick and the charge moves do no more damage than any normal attack that I ever noticed. Using the charged punch simply knocks an enemy down which in turn extends their life by waiting for them to get back up again due to unforgivably slow game play. Honestly, I felt like I was spending a disproportionate amount of time waiting for enemies to get up from the ground compared to when I was actually attacking them. This would have been forgivable if a ground and pound attack was an option. The only draw that I could still see for this game is that the attacks and defenses are really cool, and super fun but only for a very limited amount of time. This game to me has never been anything but a chore. The extremely limited fun factor is washed up by slow gameplay, boring levels, constant waiting around to stand up or for enemies to stand up, piss poor excuses for boss fights (are the bosses any different from normal enemies? be honest here), laughable challenge/difficulty, and every level is virtually identical as well as the enemies. This game sucks. Unless DD 4 is any good (haven't played it yet), so does every DD game that was not on the NES.

I play this one occasionally to this day. However, I find that the hurricane kick is easily spammed since you only have to charge it to use, as opposed to losing part of your life like in the NES versions. And you're pretty much unstoppable once you grab nunchucks. So I really don't bother much with blocking. Just perfectly timed hurricane kicks and nunchucks bashing, and you're golden.

This one got really bad reviews back in the day but a classmate still owned it.
I was blown away by the amount of moves and attacks that were possible compared to other beat em up scrollers like Final Fight!
It was definitely ahead of its time. I also appreciated the slow pace because it made the game feel more realistic.
Since then I’ve been waiting for a modern beat em up to take over the move set and expand on it.
Why couldn’t Mother Russia Bleeds work like this game and just put its violent and individually stylish presentation on top of it?!
Well, I guess I‘ll wait a bit longer.

This and Turtles in Time were the best beat em ups on the Super Nintendo.... period!! And I was very pissed they weren't packed in with the Super Nintendo Classic. I've played many beat em ups over the years and I gotta say, this is one I had a lot of fun with. Technos got it right with this one and then some. I really wish they'd do an HD remake of this game like they did with ninja warriors. Shit I wish they'd just bring both TMNT 1 and 2 to PSN!!

Good review. I loved this game growing up, but I can't look at it the same way anymore in wake of the fanmade game, "Ultimate Double Dragon", which fixed every flaw this game has and revamped the combat system in a way I never imagined. In fact, I can't think of any other beat em up that has a combat system like Ultimate Double Dragon.

Not many brawlers have a block and counter move. Very unique and cool. And it does have a lot more moves than many games in the genre. It's one of the best.

All flaws aside. It's a solid beat-em-up. Ten year old me was thoroughly impressed. The graphics, the complex (compared to other brawlers of the era) defense-minded combat system, sfx, and bgm blew my mind. It's worth a go if you're curious about it.

I'm surprised you didn't mention another flaw that always bothered me when I first played the game more than 20 years ago. You even see it in your footage... when you concentrate on one enemy, other enemies just STAND THERE waiting for you to finish up. I've never seen a beat-em-up with enemies that are so well-mannered LOL

    • @StilesReviews
      @StilesReviews 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Was likely done to emphasize the importance of the block and grapple mechanic. If enemies could still actively attack you as they do in most beat-em-ups, it would make this ability almost entirely useless because of how long it takes for the animations to play out. It is not a glamorous solution, but it is a functional one.
That said, I've never played the game before, this is just my musing from watching the video and my experience with other beat-em-ups.

I remember the first time I popped this in with my friend. We were jubilant. Double Dragon on the SNES! Granted... I already had a 16 bit DD on the Genesis, but that is not the point. Probably about three minutes later, it was game over. Well. The difficulty of classic Double Dragon was back, and we simply weren't prepared. Days later, I could run through the game without a single continue. Brilliant game... highly underrated.
