    Is anyone gonna mention the fact that the game felt incomplete because it WASNT completed?
    The game was meant to have cutscenes, more music, more stage hazards, and a better ending.
    Technos was shutting down, so they couldn't finish everything, so Tradewest rushed out the game internationally as Super Double Dragon, while Technos gave just enough time for the developers to finish some extra stuff still ready to go, such as the music for Levels 1 and 3, as well as additional combat mechanics and the final room.
    Had they gone all the way, there's have been boss music, a full story and even an additional final boss. In fact, the end credits in both releases was meant to be the final boss theme.
    18 tracks were made in total for the game (one being scrapped early on), but only a handful made it onto the final Japanese release (two of which cant be heard in-game).
    Amongst the tunes that didn't make it are:
    Stage Boss Theme
    Level Complete Fanfare
    Level 2
    Level 7
    Final Cutscene
    End Theme
    Had the game been finished, slow-paced as it may be, it would have been a masterpiece.

      @maximpact24 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never knew Technos was in trouble that early on! And I agree 100%, had they tweaked the game, and had more time it would have eclipsed Final Fight and Streets of Rage easily. It really is a shame Double Dragon fans never got the fully realized game.

    This is probably the best trek brawler ever made, all the other games you mention are lifeless linear loops, you basically just showed everyone how cool the mechanics and move sets are while saying the game sucks.

      agreed, my best friend and I gather once a week to play these games if we can escape wives and kids, and when we used to play streets of rage 2 the most. This game is the new favorite.... there is a patched version that makes i even better by alowing to block by holding, like a fighting game. Really awesome and keeps you concentrated... some of these games are just the same, we played pirates of dark waters, final fight, cptn cmando, sonic blastman... this one is much better.

    I consider RotDD a very good beat em up. Not on par with Final Fight 3 or Streets of Rage, but it's not as bad as your review makes it out to be. As far as I know there were little to no cutscenes in "Super". If there are: i forgot about them. The only thing I know is that there's a small story in the manual that came with it, and that was fairly uninformative either. The music, I will say this: you -have- been spoiled. For the time it came out, the music was very good. Admitted, not nearly as inspiring as the faster-paced themes from the original series, but not bad either.
    All in all, I -do- recommend trying this game (return, not super, super is unbalanced as f*ck), but only if you're a fan of the series. I disliked Neon, which you enjoyed, and it seems the fanbase is in general somewhat split on those two games in particular. Is it an amazing game? no, it's a pleasant game to pass time on. If you're a fan, try it out. If you're a fan of beat-em-ups and looking for a snes fighter, go for Final Fight 3.

    Your points are valid (except the music, which I though was okay). It's arguably still the best beat 'em up on the SFC/SNES though, despite it's flaws. The large, flexible moveset gives the gameplay a certain depth, and the combat is pretty enjoyable, despite it's slow pace. Beat 'em ups such as Final Fight or Turtles In Time simplify the formula too much, and despite their technical superiority, become boring slogs way too quickly.
    If only they upped the pace, increased the ROM size and made it run at a consistent 60 fps.

    DD Neo is a disgrace. I much rather play Super Double Dragon. It's moveset alone is reason enough for me to play this game.
    If there's one thing I hate about Final Fight and all Beat 'em ups after it, is how much limited this genre became limiting almost all games to a single attack button, whereas Double Dragon always have had a ton of moves available.
    Double Dragon Advance for the GBA is probably my favorite from the entire series.

    The mechanics and music are what this game is all about. If they actually finished this game properly, it would have been the best beat 'em up game ever made... Instead both versions of it aren't finished properly and it falls flat in the satisfaction department... DD II: The Revenge still has the best story of all of them with the cut scenes in between driving you to continue playing as well as having great music and the best game play out of the NES trilogy.

      It could have been the Double Dragon game to end all Double Dragon games. Just needed (a lot) more time in development. Still, for that and for the good memories I have playing it, despite feeling underwhelmed even when I got it back in the days, I appreciate the game for what it is. I guess you're right, it's a bit of a grower.

      @JayBlackthorne 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree with this completely. Super Double Dragon has the best music ever. The 'fixed' version has minor improvements, such as the AI being able to pick up weapons. The downside is that they fucked up the level music. So I'll take the unfixed version over the fixed one any day of the week. Epic music is epic.
      th-cam.com/video/JaHm61ro6V4/w-d-xo.html
      The graphics and animation were great for the time. You can take that from somebody who played it at the time of release. You can see the characters' hairs swinging around when dealing out uppercuts and roundhouses. The move set was impressive too. The defense mechanism was very revolutionary for its time. And shedloads of fun, too! A real upgrade from Double Dragon 2's limited grab/hold moves.
      I'll admit the slowness and the lack of intro/story/outro was a bummer. But better that they rushed this one out, rather than never publish it at all. I would have hate to have missed out on this one at age 14. So many good feels.

    Old video but regardless. Short version: this game was rushed and published unfinished. It's worth reading the whole original plan here :
    doubledragon.kontek.net/features/sddtruestory.html
    The game was supposed to have cut-scenes, more story, additional music etc. A complete restore/remake of the game now would be amazing but unlikely. It's by no means a bad game and the music is great (truck stage music!), it's just frustrating to play it when you know what it could HAVE been and what was planned originally.

  • @tygrus3495

    The huge setback is the velocity, that's why some prefer to play this on an emulator to adjust the velocity (it would be great if we could separate the music from the game itself to have only the game adjusted on velocity, but not the music). Is the same case with Clock Tower, is magnificent as soon as you double the velocity. The best entry in the DD saga I would say is Double Dragon Advance. Regards.

    There are some tracks I really liked from this one. I've a lot of great fan remixes as well. Here's a link to my SDD/RODD playlist to check out:
    th-cam.com/play/PLHnXjlGzDy1odIXW6hwUejgOeqdbK-4Y2.html
    I've also put together lists for the other games from the series if anybody wants to give those a listen.
    Goofy tidbit: I took the whole "Double Dragon" concept (if there is one there) and go with this slogan: "Why be a lone dragon when we can go through life in DOUBLE DRAGON STYLE!" Basically a reminder to call on friends or family in times of need rather than try to do everything on one's own. I'm a bit of a martial enthusiast and have been taking Tai Chi for about a year. Harvard put out a good book entitled The Harvard Medical Guide To Tai Chi that I would recommend for anyone looking to start some kind of easy going health practice. I also got myself some foam practice nunchaku (numchucks) to practice with. A much as it's fun to play these games, it cool to know I'm doing something that will result in having some actual rel life skills too! If you're looking for a good Kung Fu online school i would recommend Enter Shaolin. Those guys look into the physics and body mechanics behind their moves so you can be sure what you're doing will work for you if you were to ever need it. And yes Brazilian Jujitsu is good too. You're welcome Doug lol. Ok, game on folks.

    Even though you've made some astute points with regard to the game as a whole, I still hold a place for it as one of my favorite SNES games of all time. I remember playing this game co-op with my older brother back in the day, and we had a blast with it. I mean the nunchucks, the throwing knives, and that hurricane kick you mentioned at 2:53: all some of the brightest highlights of my childhood, at least in gaming anyway. For it's time, I won't say that the game was bad at all. Yeah it did have it's flaws like the horribly slow bo staff and the ineffective spike walls in the final boss room, but come on, it's a pretty fun game to play.

      I have to admit in the months since this review, I feel like my opinion of it has improved. I think I was riding on the disappointment after years of wondering how it would be. Compared to some other beat em ups that I've played for the first time since doing this review (like Rival Turf), this fares very well in comparison.

      ***** Agreed. This game is more fun with two players. This game was also early in the Super Nintendos life, so it didn't use things like Mode 7, etc. But what I do like about the game (both versions) is the fighting. The fighting required a bit more finesse than button mashing. Once you got used to the pace, you could play through the game like a bad ass. :D I agree with most of your points, but I played this game closer to the time it came out. I must admit, Double Dragon NEON is one I have played, but this one is one of my faves, along with DD2 the Revenge on the NES. Two players make the game better.

    While the sprites aren't as big and bold as the ones in Final Fight and Streets of Rage, they are better animated. Subtle touches like hair blowing back as you swing a nunchaku look great, or even the way weapons are wielded feels very Bruce Lee.

    I have huge nostalgia for the original Double Dragon. I pumped a lot of coins into the arcade game (and it's sequel), and got my home fix on the Master System version (which was an early Killer App on the system). However, the only version that I keep coming back to is the frankly brilliant Double Dragon II: The Revenge on the PC Engine CD. I can't really fault it and I even prefer the soundtrack to the classic Koshiro scores of the earlier Streets Of Rage games.

    This is one of the best double dragon games next to part 2 on the nes and the original...just because it's different and it takes skills and patience to play doesn't mean it's bad...yes, the story is dumb(so is all the double dragon games) the music is repetitive(not bad), I think the graphics are good, and the gameplay mechanics are brilliant! Btw you can grab people and throw them or punch and kick them. This game has the biggest variety if moves you can do next to any other beat em up on the system or in the series. The game is just very difficult and takes practice to learn all the moves and combos and how it should be played. I think you should take the time to learn and get good at it and then you would enjoy it a lot more. You need to strategize to defeat the mobs of enemies! Give it another try man! It's very satisfying to beat because of it's difficulty.

But, I agree this was not an easy game to beat and it takes skill to learn. I loved it :)

    Is hard to say this but Techno did not know how to get the most out this great franchise.
    Although Super Double Dragon is not the greatest and most creative beat'em up that it should have been in 90's is a great game. I mean every time I play it just for nostalgia I find myself caught by its battle system (which somehow reminds me of Power Rangers 90's TV show where enemies patiently wait for their turn to be punished) and I play and I play until without realizing I finished the game.
    About the music I believe it has great tunes (the kind of tunes that only the snes was capable of generate) but I must recognize that sometimes I feel like I'm in an elevator while playing this game waiting to reach the 30th floor while staring at the roof.
    But, is DD's music memorable? You bet!
    In conclusion and as I said at the beginning Technos did not know how to get the most out of this particular game, in addition by today's standards due to its linearity (Beat the level moving from A to B) it may seem just an OK game out of the Snes's games bunch.
    Now, if we incorporate what was lost in translation it looks like the game lacks of almost everything to be called a great game (and in the paper it may seem true) but if you play it you cannot deny that there is something pushing you to finish it until you have beaten the "generic" last boss.
    Is DD a good game? It is to me.
    I hope some new studio got interested in doing a new version of Super Double Dragon and mix it with RPG elements (experience, levels, new weapons, dungeons, mafia and Marion coming back from the dead to become Cyber Marion and kick butts next to Bimmy and Jimmy) That would be awesome¡.

    For the most part, I agree. Return of Double Dragon just feels incomplete and unsatisfying. I feel that it could have been much better if only they had put more effort into it. But all in all, it's a pretty decent game. Especially when compared to the trainwreck that Double Dragon III was. But not a worthy successor to the masterpiece that was Double Dragon II: The Revenge. While I haven't played the most recent game in the series, Double Dragon Neon, it looks awesome. And from what I heard, it's a much better game.

    ok i must say i dont fully agree with this review. This game was actually really good for its time idk but i always loved this DD version ( Actually i loved DD period hands down best beat em up game of all time yes even better than FF and SOR) but yea i agree with some of this review as well it was slow paced and it could have had a better storyline but other than that i think this game was amazing with the varieties of moves to do and the block system was affective. To me this was the 2nd best DD game in the franchise. My favorite DD game was always DD 2 The Revenge for the NES.

      That's River City Ransom on the original Nintendo system. The game that follows is Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World for ps3 and xb360.

    The best thing about this game are the aesthetics. It doesn't sound like you were born during this time. The music was exceptionally well-received and some of the best renditions of the old DD tunes at the time. You might be too young to understand this.
    But the critiques of the gameplay, mechanics and game design you made are pretty accurate. I agree with those. But no one really played this game back then being picky on those mechanics. There wasn't much better in its era.

    This is actually my favorite version of the DD theme music. prefer this even over the arranged versions done across different DD games. Its between Super DD and DD Advance for best DD of all time.

    While your opinion about SDD's music being "flat and boring" is not one I agree with, it is refreshingly different and I respect that.

    Super Double Dragon is a flawed game in the sensé that for an SNES game it feels like it didn't improve anything. It's better than Double Dragon 3 but that's not much of a compliment, for an SNES réinvention of the franchise, the game is quite average. I like the graphics music and fighting mechanics, however the slow pacing and lack of story and variety of enemies make it a somewhat routine expérience. Not terrible but average.

    Man the kicks and elbows are very realistic looking. Back when this released, martial arts shit always looked so fake but it seems like the devs actually checked out proper technique from legit muay thai fighters or something.

    Well for me super double dragon have better music except in the first mission.the movements are faster and the end is only letters but at least you know that the game is finished.another thing but is personal is that the super double dragon have better cover.but yes the return of double dragon is the winner

    • @troudecul69
      @troudecul69 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      the movement are faster ? and why return of double dragon is the winner if it's slower ?

      @paulg8281 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      bruce gannon yes well in the europe version are more faster and its much better.an why te return of double dragon is the winner if it's slower?.answer:because the movements sounds better than the american version.another thing is that the return have 2 extra places,have the options in the menu where you can hear the sounds,music,credits and the options of easy,normal,hard.so its more complete except by the final.

      ok it's a good opinion also that the typhoon kick in RoDD really works :) I like the damage done in SDD by weapons, It's hard to tell wich one's best. I'd say RoDD if anyone want it badly cause its a lot cheaper. But I think what's definitive it's a quick release game with a lot of screw up but a really cool game in general

    I too am going to have to disagree with you on the music. If you are indeed a fan of original DD theme, the SNES version is just a richer and evolved version of NES. If anything the DD Neon version just sounds like any other OC Remix. It's not hard to sound "badass" with high fidelity instruments and technology. I find it infinitely more admirable (and better sounding) on what Technos is able to accomplish on 16-bit hardware. Feel free to disagree.

    After I saw Game Sack's overview of the entire Double Dragon series, I left with no real interest to try out one entry. They all seemed to have one thing that just turned me off or just seemed average. And this review definitely didn't help that.

      [Coury] this video is a bit older - if I did it today, I'd probably approach it a bit differently. Super Double Dragon was a disappointment to me at the time, but I often find myself wanting to go back and play it. Something about it has just stuck with me I guess.
      If you're going to play a game in the series, I feel that DD 2 and Neon are your best bets.

      C'mon man, you should try out at least one version of Double Dragon. I would suggest DD II on the nes. It's probably the best in the entire series. But then again, not all gamers love beat em ups these days...

    • @doomed2063
      @doomed2063 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      RarefoilB even incomplete, Super DD/Return of DD is actually still a fairly solid beat em up. It has some cool fight engine concepts that could of truly been amazing had the developers had the time to fully complete the game's development.
      Its by no means a masterpiece, but remains more than enjoyable, especially if you're a fan of the beat em up genre. If you can look passed the game's rough edges, you may find an enjoyable Experience.

    • @doomed2063
      @doomed2063 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      RarefoilB a majority of the games' shortcomings cone from the fact that the game is essentially incomplete, not that its a bad game as, like I said, there is clearly something there that could of been a classic but it's development was rushed and it was forced out too early.
