Carbon plates seem to be misunderstood most of the time. Every carbon plate or flange in a shoe is supposed to stabilize the squishy foam. No one is putting enough pressure into the plate to be able to bend or spring it forward. The purpose is to engage as much foam as possible and keep somewhat of a stable platform. When you land on the plates, it spreads the pressure out on top of more foam rather than just the spot that you're landing on. The foam contains almost all of the efficiency gain, not the plates. That "spring" forward that we feel in some shoes and not other is the foam and geometry working in tandem, not the plate unloading.
For me as a 210lb runner i think this shoe is the best option on the market now for longer slower efforts as I build up my aerobic base and train towards a full marathon. It saves my body as a bigger runner. I absolutely love the superblast as well but not as much for slower paces. Just a reminder that I've had to learn the hard way, don't look to people who review shoes that aren't built like yourself. Kofuzi does great reviews but i realized most of the time it doesn't apply to my experience in a shoe. When you're over 200lbs your going to compress that cushion and plate much differently and get a completely different experience that runners who are 170lbs or less. I'm thankful Hoka made this shoe the way they did, I am training for a marathon with this shoe now.
I agree! i started getting into running at 410 lbs. i like his reviews a lot. but some stuff i cant relate to because of the fact that im really slow and big! for me "picking up the pace" is very very slow for a lot of runners. but this shoe with the carbon plate definitely gives me some bounce compared to other max cushioners i wear!
this is the best shoe I own even for a lightweight (53kg) that have bad knees and also a beginner in running. it doesn't help when most of these reviewed shoes aren't available in physical store where I am, also shoes need to be ran certain miles to know if it's really suited for someone's feet. tried the bondi and didn't like it.
Same boat, I’m 6 ft. And hover around 209-212lbs. Also in the beginner phase of my running journey. And I thought I’d be able to handle less cushioned shoes, but after borderline injuring myself 😅, my body responds best to shoes like the ASICS Nimbus 26 and now here the Skyward X. These two will be my rotation for now.
Really enjoy your reviews, but I believe this shoe is awesome for a heavier runner. I weigh in at 200lbs and truly feel the comfort and propulsion of this shoe. Thank you for all your great reviews!
180 lbs. These are the first pair of shoes that made me actually LOOK FORWARD to running. Don't discount a shoe's ability to give you such a comfortable ride that it makes you not hate the sport.
I love your review, detailed and informative. I've been running in the skyward x all summer while marathon training. In short, I think this is the best all-around shoe I've ever used. I'm a 2:55 marathoner at 155 lbs. Switching from bondi X, I love the responsiveness of this shoe and the way it really rolls. This shoe always feels good, and I run fast in them frequently, tempo runs, longruns with tempo finishes. The shoes are awesome and keep me feeling fresh. They have the cushion without the mush.
I have tried almost any shoe over the past years. For slower, heavier runners like myself (190cm, 90kg, pace 6 p km) this shoe is it. This is a supershoe not for all those well trained athletes, but for the not so well trained long way to go-dudes. It is bouncier than Nike‘s Invicibles, better leg saving than NB‘s More. It is the shoe that HOKA always should have been like but never was before.
All the big fella comments have me excited of delivery of the shoe to my doorstep. Received the Neo Vista today and will beheading out in a few hours to give that a go. Perfect timing to have them arrive on back-to-back days so I can A/B them and decide which fits the bill. I am sure it will be a resounding "both" and my wallet shall thin out in record time lol.
I have osteoarthritis in my knee and wear cushioned shoes to minimize pain(Invincible, SC comp, addizero, fresh foam more, etc). I recently did six pain free miles in the Skyward X and had no after run soreness. Not as cushy as the invincible, and much more stable underfoot than the adidas. The Bondi was ok in terms of residual knee pain, but the skyward has that same firm feeling and is softer on the joints. If you were not told (or looked at) the height of the shoe, you wouldn’t really notice.
A friend of mine has been telling me to wear my work boots for years. I don’t think these are quite my Chippewas. I find these very comfortable and smooth running shoes. Yes I’m a bigger guy. I’m very grateful to have these in my rotation! The only time I’d run in my boots is if a bear is chasing me!
I absolutely love this shoe. Its super bouncy to the point I don't notice the weight... I am 6ft 160ish and it seems to work well for my long runs and some longer easier runs. I pair it with the Rebel v4 for speedier workouts, and the more v4 for super relaxed days
I'm kind of glad I'm late to the commenting party. The other comments are almost as valuable as the review. The three magic words that normally perk up my ears and guarantee a spot on my wish list: illegal stack height. But not this time. Glad to know this is a shoe probably best for someone with a completely different body type from mine. Also I'm gonna go way out on a limb and predict that the Aquafresh colorway will be... divisive.
I would not call them boring, they are great long easy recovery run shoes and are great at what they are intended for, good companion for faster shoes like the Cielo x1 or adios pro 3 / Boston 12, 3 of my other loved shoes.
The first test run on this shoe ended up being an impromptu full 42.2klm after-work mid-week marathon. As someone who regularly runs over 100klm per week, i needed a shoe to save my legs and this was the only thing on the market. ironically the shoe before this was the new Balance SC trainer v2, i had to return it because the front foot was not stable enough leaning inward. the Hoka works for what it is made for and the soul feels amazing, the heel lock is not great so it puts extra pressure on the upper lacers. i wish it had an 8mm drop. it feels like a super premium version of the more v4, the more v4 had a more comfortable upper but this sole is light years ahead. The out sole is not good, it is sum how both slippery in the rain and wears out fast (normally it is one or the other) complete opposite of the perfect continental rubber of the Adios Pro 3. should you buy, yes i do not regret this purchase and after 200klm it is a pleasure to lace up.
Thanks for your review Kofuzi!!! I feel the same way about the Skyward X! It is a good shoe, but a little to firm for me. Can’t wait for your Mizuno Neo Vista review, it is also a very tall shoe, but lighter and has more bounce and squish, and it is considerably cheaper
I felt the Skyward X had a really pleasant bounciness to it when I tried it. The price tag is just a huge hurdle though. It’s also just a lot of shoe under foot. In any event, it’s nice that Hoka is using better foams across their line. The super critical eva in this and the Mach 6 is really nice.
I think the price is the tough pill to swallow. I don't get my pair until tomorrow, but comments give me the impression that this is a fantastic easy/recovery day shoe for heavier runners. $225 for a shoe that fills a role that most dow with a $160 shoe is tough, but if it allows for more miles with fewer injuries, I'm down to pay $225. I'm between 210 and 215 pounds and in great shape (former football player), but I've quickly learned that fitness has little to do with the pounding on the knees.
Yes me too at 210lbs. Light TH-camrs aren't the best reviewers to consider as a heavier runner. In fact I find sometimes it's opposite of what works for me. I love the Skyward x so far as a heavy runner and much better than Bondi or others mentioned here. I also love the Superblast because I think extra cushion that's not too soft is what might be best as a heavy runner. But Skyward x works better at those slow paces compared to superblast
i run in the 1080v13. brooks ghost max. novablast 4. oncloud eclipse. nike pegasus trail 4. invinceable 3. and a few others. Most of these shoes i wear for running and working on my feet all day
@@irohsprodigyI'm wary of the really soft highly cushioned shoes though. When you're heavy you'll sink into them much more and I'm not find of many really soft sink like shoes. I find the Skyward x with the plate isn't too soft and provides the right amount of moderately soft and firm feel for me. Really stable with that wide platform as well.
Im the odd one out as the clour is what I loved first. Ive only done 60 miles in mine but I really love them. Im not a fast or competitive runner. Im not tall and im not heavy but these shoes have helped me knock 45 seconds off my mile pace on my base and long runs. I also have the Bondi 8 buts its no where near as responsive as the Skyward X
another excellent review.., i dont know about other runners.., but I never have to be first to get a shoe. I like to see what everyone is saying, and with all the other reviews out, and watching Kofuzi.., I can wait a bit longer for my next shoe purchase..., possible July 1, for the Hoka Skyflow.. hmmm, .... again, excellent insight
will you say you can run a half marathon on the Skyward X, if you just want to roll with it not looking for any PR but most to just enjoy the race and ended it feeling good?
I am a Hoka fan and have tried many of their road running shoes. I bought the Skyward X last week and returned it today. Highly disappointing. They were killing my knees. The shoes aren't level, they tilt outward. I'd like to know what is the best high cushioned running shoes for lowest impact on the body.
I been a huge hoka fan. One thing I hate is they don't make a shoe that matches normal jeans and t shirt wear. Hands down softest shoe and best shoe for s1 issues. First time in years I bought a nike just for the color reason
Question for the community: I’m getting back into long runs and I need a more supportive shoe to run in. I was going to get the skyward x’s but I heard the cielo x 1 were good too but I thought they were considered racing shoes rather then a trainer. Which one should I get?
Any word on a potential Rocket X3 or new Hoka racing shoe? I’m needing a new shoe for my next half marathon and all the Hokas I look at are out of stock. I don’t think my Clifton 9’s will cut it.
Sir, Could you please compare with Bondi 8? I am considering to buy the Skyward X not for running but for my injured foot, Bondi 8 is a good choice for foot injury, not sure with Skyward X. I had tried March X, it was not good for me. I am looking for some type similar as Bondi 8 for daily walking.
I did compare it to the Bondi 8, it's at the end of the video. but if you are looking for it as a post-injury recovery device, I would consult your ortho or PT. I can't give that kind of recommendation.
I’ve been running in the Skyward X for a few weeks and really enjoy them. Other shoes that I enjoy are the Kinvara Pro and SC Trainer V2. I’m a forefoot striker and the rocker in the Skyward X really works with my foot strike. It has handled a variety of paces well for me so I keep pulling them out for every run. I really enjoy the new super trainer category of shoes. I’m looking to add the Superblast 2 and SC Train V3 to my rotation once they release later this year.
I left Hoka after, in my opinion, they messed up the Clifton 7 and 8 foam. I’m trying other shoes in the ASICS line now. I’ve seen the Skyward X buzz recently and will pass. Too high of a stack and not a fan of the weight or color.
I’ve bought fewer Hoka shoes than some other brands, but the Mach 6 is a fantastic shoe. I’m not a fan of very high stack or super squishy shoes. I just ran 10 miles in them and they were great at all paces, plus my feet felt great.
Hi, i am interested to buy the Hoka shoes, but i don't know which one. I walked 5km everyday home to work and i have bunions. Do you have any recommendations??? Thank you ❤
I think it feels a lot like the Superblast another plush pricey shoe. I think the Skyward might be heavier though. Personally I feel like the Skyward does feel squishy, a little less performance and a bit more feel good.
Im doing a 5K in San Diego soon and was wondering if i could use my Skywards in it? Im not fast or looking for a super good time. Would i look like an idiot showing up with these for a 6K race? Thanks Ko!
that is a bit outside of my area of expertise. I'd consult a pt if it's a persistent problem. in my mind, shin splints are a fitness problem. they appear when there is a change in training and your body is adapting to it. once it adapts, the shin splints go away. if I'm wrong on that, see the first thing I said in this comment.
Did you watch the video? He straight up says that it isn't a superblast competitor. It's bounce is very muted and doesn't really justify the high stack height.
Superblast at faster paces and Skyward x for slower long distance efforts and recovery runs for me at 210lbs. Both amazing options for the BIG boi running club.
@@johnsonch7292yeah pretty much my experience and all the TH-cam reviewers experiences I've heard. Superblast is fantastic but doesn't really shine at slow paces while this one for me as a big guy works fantastic at the slow to moderate efforts. I can understand how a lighter runner might not get the benefit of the plate and cushion with this and find it's not that special for them but it's my go to for really long easier efforts. I'm really thankful for it.
As a 200+ pound runner with past heel surgery issues, CUSHION and STABILITY is critical. When I see a super tall show I think UNSTABLE sadly. I wish more folks talked to that topic for heavier runners. These featherweight runners don't stress the shoe IMHO.
I try to mention when I consider a shoe to be favorable to my bigger taller friends. but I admit I don't always. i generally recommend for people to find a reviewer who tends to like the same shoes that they do. please feel free to consider another reviewer who is bigger taller that may be able to more regularly address your concerns.
Great review! I tried them on in store and just didn't feel worth the price tag. Love the trend with these big, cushy kicks we have been seeing though!
@@kofuzi Seriously I'm old enough to remember platforms and that ankle injuries were the #1 problem with them. 2 inches of stack height is getting up there even with the plate being used for stability.
With all the specs, I had super high hopes for this shoe. But the second I tried it on, an instant problem...I was supinating to an insane degree. Just wasn't going to work.
Last time it was the Homer Simpson car, this time it’s the Spruce Goose. I am either too old or too young to get your references 😂

I couldn’t disagree with this more. I feel like these shoes have more than enough bounce and that they are quite fast for how thick the sole is. I have put 120 miles on mine and I really enjoy them. I also think my foot shape works better with Hokas than the other brands you listed so it’s all personal preference
I generally recommend people find reviewers who tends to agree with them on shoes and then look primarily to those people for guidance on future shoes. but I think saying that "it's all personal preference" goes a bit too far.
I tried it for a short run during a launch event and i was so dissapointed. I own primeX omans Superblast and had that in mind. But as Michael says, it massive, heavy, and mushy. Yes is comfortable but it gives you nothing back. Just massive stabile mush and with that weight you need something g back like the primeX gives you. I don’t get this shoe at all and it’s such a shame
In the beginning, you always have a disclaimer of how you got the shoe. A better disclaimer is to tell us your age, height, and weight so we know if everything your saying is accurate for the viewer or not. You analysis of this shoe is completely different from larger runners like myself (240 lb powerlifter who recently got into running). At this point, most of your newer viewers probably aren't even fast enough for a race day shoe. I did a race last week and saw ALOT of people wearing the skyward x for race day. A lot of us are old and just want to be healthy and not hurt our legs. Maybe in each review you can do a "big guy" analysis.
I think you misunderstand what a disclaimer is, but I understand what you are saying. I also think stating age and weight would be less helpful than stating footstrike, typical surfaces run, and weekly mileage. I'm pretty sure I have a good sense of when a shoe is good for my bigger and taller friends, and I don't recall if I specifically mentioned that with this review. but I tend not to go out of my way to mention when a shoe would be good for a runner who is not me. It is literally impossible for me to have anything more than a hypothesis in that regard. I recommend Drew from Wear Testers and Herm from Herm Runs on IG for that kind of thing. Martellus Evans is also a good source.
@@kofuzi I appreciate the response. I agree that there isn't a way for you to experience being taller and heavier. You can talk about footstrike and foams all day, but you will never understand what it feels like to be 240 lbs running a 5+ hour marathon. Because of this, I have to take everything with a grain of salt. It is what it is. I'll look into those other accounts for big guy experiences.
I think someone who disagrees with both my Mach X2 opinion and my Skyward X opinion is the type of runner for whom those shoes were intended. It’s a great time to be a runner. So many different shoes for different preferences.
@@kofuzi yeah not a heel striker pal it works well for mid to forefoot strikers but on 2nd run the infamous heel rub as got me it’s so shame as the ride is brilliant
Thanks for the feedback!
Is peba same fuel cell ???
I left Hoka after, in my opinion, they messed up the Clifton 7 and 8 foam. I’m trying other shoes in the ASICS line now.
I’ve seen the Skyward X buzz recently and will pass. Too high of a stack and not a fan of the weight or color.
I’ve bought fewer Hoka shoes than some other brands, but the Mach 6 is a fantastic shoe. I’m not a fan of very high stack or super squishy shoes. I just ran 10 miles in them and they were great at all paces, plus my feet felt great.
please advise some models of sneakers for beginners

I love this shoe!!!
Would you recommend this shoe for 3.30 marathoner?
It’s not a race shoe, but if what I described sounds like what you want for your race, go for it.
If not, then no.
Can you please review the 880 v14 please 🙏
I was really hoping this would be a reincarnation of my beloved NB SC Trainer V1 😢
That was a fun shoe
Probably Mizuno neo vista is this one
Hi, i am interested to buy the Hoka shoes, but i don't know which one. I walked 5km everyday home to work and i have bunions. Do you have any recommendations??? Thank you ❤
Clifton is a great place to start
@@kofuzi Thank you 😊
Do you plan on looking at any of altras newer shoes. I know that you’ve looked at their shoes in past
yes
I think it feels a lot like the Superblast another plush pricey shoe. I think the Skyward might be heavier though. Personally I feel like the Skyward does feel squishy, a little less performance and a bit more feel good.
What is the carbon fiber daily trainer for fast runs
there are many. it depends on what kind of experience you are looking for. I mention several alternatives in this video.
Hi Kofuzi, i'm looking for one shoe does all for my marathon preparation , which one should be ? Thanksss
consider novablast 4, rebel 4, 1080v13, mach 6, deviate nitro 2
Spot on, Ko! Returned this shoe after 2 runs. For me, it didn’t excel at anything. Super average, super trainer.
Im doing a 5K in San Diego soon and was wondering if i could use my Skywards in it? Im not fast or looking for a super good time. Would i look like an idiot showing up with these for a 6K race? Thanks Ko!
you totally can
Hi Kofuzi, do you have any shoe recommendation that can minimize shin splint? I always get it even with short distance run😢
that is a bit outside of my area of expertise. I'd consult a pt if it's a persistent problem.
in my mind, shin splints are a fitness problem. they appear when there is a change in training and your body is adapting to it. once it adapts, the shin splints go away. if I'm wrong on that, see the first thing I said in this comment.
3rd post! How is skyward compare against superblast? Pls help answer.
@@peterledrew2556 thanks for the clarification
@@franklehouillier8865 so muted and not fun.
That greenish checkerboard shirt was it Demon slayer ?? If not need some information on it lol
Great review! I tried them on in store and just didn't feel worth the price tag. Love the trend with these big, cushy kicks we have been seeing though!
got it then, Superblast 2 it is
Since the Bondi X was a one hit wonder, wouldn't that be a Spruce Goose?
I mean, if we’re going to go back through the archives, I’d argue Ten Nine
@@kofuzi I never had the pleasure of running in that one.
I did. It’s a trip
48mm height and $225? Does it have a goldfish in the heel? 🙂
Disco Stu hopes so
I’ve found old Bay seasoned Gold Fish. But not in my Skywards. They’re great right after a very comfortable run!
@@kofuzi Seriously I'm old enough to remember platforms and that ankle injuries were the #1 problem with them. 2 inches of stack height is getting up there even with the plate being used for stability.
Neo vista please
would prefer Rocket x 2
but this ones are on sale now for 168 Euro in Germany
Skyward X ist too heavy
With all the specs, I had super high hopes for this shoe. But the second I tried it on, an instant problem...I was supinating to an insane degree. Just wasn't going to work.
even with the carbon and side rails? whoa
@@kofuzi Yup. Very strange, because in the NB FuelCell Supercomp I, I have no problem.
Mizuno Neo Vista 💯🔥
That’s what I thought of as I was testing the skyward, but I haven’t run in the neo vista yet
Now that it's xmas it seems that it flew (vs Spruce Goose 😂).
Tbh it looks a bit like a basketball shoe when you showed clips of you running in it.
Not for me, don't get on with most Hoka shoes apart from Rocket X2, hated Mach X!
The majority of us brands currently make trainer shoes for medium to heavy runners, I prefer asian european brands Mizuno Anta Asics Puma Adidas etc.
I personally didn’t like them. This is also me comparing to the Asics Superblast
I feel like people hoping for a Superblast experience from the Skyward are going to be disappointed
Yooo what’s going on??
The brick. 🧱
Skyward sounds like an experimental shoe
Second from the Philippines🇵🇭, whats up idol..
a premium super trainer weighting over 11 oz....?
just NO
I just can’t get over the look. Looks like something my grandpa would throw on to go walk the mall with the other mall walkers.
There's a new lemon color way on the Hoka site.
@@gtromble I saw that. Looks even worse. 😂
🙌🙌🙌❤️❤️❤️
I'm 100% here for using spruce goose in a review
All sold out in Korea..
My vanity disallows it.
Yo, what’s going on!!
Yo Luis!
Slightly critical of this supercritical EVA? 😋
$225 👀 yikes.
Yeah
Think kufuzi over complicates things and I think you’ve been way off in some of your content I know it’s a opinion but Mach x2 and this your way off
I think someone who disagrees with both my Mach X2 opinion and my Skyward X opinion is the type of runner for whom those shoes were intended.
It’s a great time to be a runner. So many different shoes for different preferences.
@@kofuzi yeah not a heel striker pal it works well for mid to forefoot strikers but on 2nd run the infamous heel rub as got me it’s so shame as the ride is brilliant
Looks like something Elton John would've worn in the 1970s.
I found Boston 12 for 30 dollars at Burlington... I'll stick with adidas
such terrible color ways 😭😭 makes me so sad when hoka does this
Sometimes they take big risks and it works, like with the Cielo X1. Other times, it doesn’t, like with the Skyward colorway
shoe looks like crap, definitely won't be considering it
sounds like a real miss.
Why do they do such ugly colours.
