I appreciate this video so much because I'm studying for the LMSW and was struggling to remember everything DSM-related and this was a good refresher and seemed to highlight the trickiest disorders *virtual hug* you are appreciated.
I'm curious. I read the history of the field, and it's full of inhumane treatment of mentally illness and I'm not sure about the science papers. I get a bad feeling about the papers. It feels it could be abused to make money like has been for years when religion can be a good thing. It feels like snake oil salesmen selling me something. How do you work in this field knowing the history of lobotomies, electric shock therapy, and ETC. Also. Too many mentally ill people themselves go into the field. I view it as a problem.
Wow. So glad I found this!! I’m preparing to take my LMSW exam in 6 weeks. The DSM-5 is overwhelming for me because I want to get a good overview but have been told not to go into too much detail. This is super helpful! Will be listening to this and your other videos!
Thank you so much for this! I take my LMSW exam 2 weeks from tomorrow and your video has helped make the dsm-5 SO much more bearable. Sharing with my fellow mental health friends preparing for their exam :)
This is my first time studying this topic: There is so much information to digest and Learn. I know people experience different emotions, I am learning that this is intense.
I am currently selling my entire LCSW Exam Study material for 20$. I have Power Point presentations ranging from 15-30 slides each on: Test Taking Strategies, Psychotherapy, Clinical Interventions and Case Management, Professional Values and Ethics, Human Development and Behavior in the Environment, and Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment Planning. Additionally, I have a 30+ page DSM5 outline, PDF version of the LCSW 2018 APGAR Practice Exam with Answer Key and correct answer explanations, ASWB Exam Content and Guide from the Association of Social Work Boards, List of Prep Courses and Resources, and medication charts and outlines. Text or private message me to see screenshots of some of the material. Text me at (305) 300-1383 for more information or to place your order. Thank you!!
You helped me figure out the behaviors of my brother who has Fetal Alcohol Syndrome but has always struggled with ALL of the things described with Delusional Disorder... literally every single one. We will be readdressing these struggles with the doctor to confirm.
Hi Karen, Thanks so much for making these presentations available. They are proving to be very helpful in studying for the LCSW exam. I found an inconsistency with the DSM-5 in your description of Bipolar I at about 15:56. You said--if I understood correctly--that depressive symptoms must be present for both Bipolar I and II diagnoses. My understanding is that depressive symptoms are only necessary for the diagnosis of Bipolar II. Though the majority of those whose symptoms meet the criteria for a fully syndromal manic episode do experience major depressive episodes during the course of their lives, I was under the impression that a history of depressive symptoms was not necessary for a diagnosis of Bipolar I. Thank you so much for sharing your teaching like this!
Hi Dahna, Great question. That's helpful feedback that I wasn't very clear on that. You're correct, for Bipolar I they must meet criteria for a manic episode, which "MAY have been preceded or followed by....major depressive episodes". On Pg 139 of the TR, it says, "the vast majority of individuals whose symptoms meet the criteria for a fully syndromal manic episode also experience major depressive episodes during the course of their lives". However, this is not required for dx. Hope this helps!
@@karenmagruderlcsw-s9655 Thanks so much! I'm finding your videos to be quite comprehensive and thorough. I appreciate your response and all of your teachings!
Hello, I first off want to say thank you for your time and knowledge in being a valuable resource to understanding the DSM-5. I am following along using my DSM 5 textbook and in the Intellectual Disability section under specifiers it states, "The various levels of severity are defined on the basis of adaptive functioning, and not IQ scores, because it is adaptive functioning that determines the level of supports required. Moreover, IQ measures are less valid in the lower end of the IQ range". Can you or someone please clarify the essence of those statements? Should we be assessing based off IQ scores, adaptive functioning, or both? If both please explain the assessment tactic and how we would weigh our options and apply it. Thank you again.
You did well bringing all this good information on,i think it can be very helpfull to many in a lot of different ways that maybe were never known,i would appreciate if you can bring more of this kind on love you Denny

This is very helpful! may I ask where you got the IQ ranges of IDD in DSM-5?I thought the levels of severity are defined on the basis of adaptive functioning, and not IQ.
I am studying psychology in undergraduate currently. I am looking to becoming a counselor, though I am still working on which area I want to study. I just ordered the 2022 DSM-V TR to just look over, read, and study to get an idea of how complex mental diagnoses can be. This video really helps too!
It’s currently 2 am. I’m a 15 year old high schooler with no intention of going into the field of psychology. What am I doing here, you may ask? Well, let’s just leave the answer as: I’m bored, and I have a slight obsession with this particular topic. It’s cool to be in this comment section, among all of these highly educated people. EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot the whole point of my making this comment. Great video! Made everything very easy to understand
Thank you so much, Karen. You explained it in the simplest way. Thank you, so much. If you don't mind can you email me this is PPT? It will be a great help to me.
This is wonderful! I’m going to watch this several times before my LCSW exam. I appreciate all your visuals.

Your lessons are so informative! Is there a way to access the PowerPoints so they may be printed and reviewed.
The resources provided by my own school were nowhere near this succinct yet thorough. Nice work Karen.
Thank you so much! I take my exam in just a few weeks and having things like this available for free means SO much.
