    Bought a 987.2 2010 Base Cayman in February 2022, a very well-maintained car overall with 82k miles mostly by the original owner. Having read the horror stories of "stop where you are and proceed no further" Cayman manual-transmission breakdowns due to shifter-cable snapping, and planning to drive the new-to-me Cayman home from.North Carolina to Michigan, I thought the Numeric® cables were a smart purchase. I had the NC shop that did the PPI for me install the cables, and the drive home was smooth as could be. In addition to peace of mind, the cables resulted in a very precise "rifle-bolt like" feel to gear- engagement. Only issue I've experienced is the need for a slight adjustment to the cable length to improve the shift-feel into reverse... a minor annoyance, but no big deal.

      Thanks for the info. If you’re doing all the work yourself, did you think about changing the actual shifter to a more solid version, with a shorter shift? I would have liked that in my Cayman, totally non-standard so Porsche wouldn’t fit that. numericracing.com/store/shifter100/

    Yep, I just two weeks ago replaced both the shifter and the cables with the Numerics. Vastly improved. The feel is tight and positive. No slop. All the favorable comments I read previously ring completely true. One fact that perhaps isn't obvious is that it will cost more to install the Numeric cables as opposed to the Porsche units. Numeric, as you mentioned, are beefier and stiffer. So they're harder to get to run properly from transmission to the shifter. Totally doable - just takes more time. BTW, my Porsche cables hadn't snapped. I just felt the shifter precision wasn't what it could be AND I didn't have any desire to be stranded by a snapped cable.

      Benson Tongue Good for you man👍🏼In the UK Numeric isn’t that easy to get hold of quickly. I had to go the Porsche route to get the car running again ASAP. I like the approach you took👌🏼

    I was just as surprised when it happened in my 987.2 - bought at 37K miles, cables broke at 39K miles. I didn't know it was a known issue when I initially purchased the Cayman, even after my research. Everyone talks about oil starvation and the IMS bearing issues in the 987.1, but found nothing like this when reading forums and sites about the 987.2. It happened before I left for a track day. Fortunately I was not on track, unfortunately, I was stuck in reverse and backed in to my garage - no chance to shift in neutral to push it out of the garage to have it towed to a dealership. I have very little mechanical experience, but I raised the car and took a look. Luckily, the bracket popped off the transmission linkage, so I popped the bracket back on (with my bare hands) so I could shift to 1st and pull out of the garage. I still used my 2 year CPO warranty to have the car towed to the dealership anyway and the cables were replaced under warranty. I think Porsche replaced with a slightly better OEM cable, but I vowed to change to Numeric if this happens again. What choice do we have?

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Damn, sorry to hear about this. Stuck in reverse?! That's a first for me to hear about, usually it's a forward gear. At least you knew to check the plastic linkage. I only learnt about that when my car was eventually delivered to Porsche on the back of a tow truck. You're so right, before buying a Cayman, EVERYONE talks about IMS bearings and bore scoring. Never do they ask if the shifter cables have been replaced. That's why I wanted to share this material with people out there. Much as I love Porsche, I do feel this was bad design which shipped out of their factory. It's happened to so may cars, not just the Caymans, 911's too! At least you got fixed under warranty... I used to think I'd go Numeric, however I believe the new Porsche cables are modified and the angles over which the cables travel has been modified to reduce metal fatigue. Rest assured you should be good for the life of the car now. That's my expectation on my new cables anyhow.

    I bought a 2011 Cayman S a few weeks ago with 75,000 miles on it. It was actually your last video of the break down that convinced me that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. My Numeric cables will be here on Thursday. Sorry for your troubles, but thanks for your videos!

      Frank Jaerschky Hey CONGRATULATIONS. Life will never be the same ;-) You got it right as well, it’s about prevention and making your own mind up. When your original cables snap, and if you need your car for work, you need to get it fixed ASAP. I couldn’t have waited to order Numeric cables and then get a specialist to fit them. I did see a comprehensive installations document on the Numeric website. The installation is key. GOOD LUCK and please report back with your before and after thoughts if you could?
      If you’re that way inclined and wish to make some quick video clips for me of your shifter before and after (as some subscribers have done if you check my subscriber playlist), that would be awesome. However I understand if you can’t.

Unless of course the cables in the car snap before then! Cheers!

      @@MAXREVS Max, I'm so sorry but I installed the cables with no video. I started with good intentions. I thought it would be a 2 or 3 hour job, so positioned the camera and started recording. Then after I was done I realized I hooked the cables up backwards. Then there was a lot of swearing, cursing, blood, and after 5 hours the camera battery died. But, on the bright side, I did eventually get the cables in and they are great. They work very smoothly and result in a more precise shifter feel. I don't notice any increase in noise level inside the cabin as some have complained about. Very happy with these cables and the peace of mind!

      @MAXREVS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, import duty!! Fingers crossed my replacement cables last a while. I don't have enough solid information to go on, but the Porsche mechanic did say they changed a bracket with a mount point at a different angle. There is some unofficial mention of the angle the cables had to pass through to go over the engine and to the gearbox. With the new reduced angle at a particular bend, the rumour is that there is less chance of metal fatigue on the cables. Think how many thousands of times the cables move backwards and forwards over say a 5 year period. At the end of the day, I bought the Cayman for driving pleasure, not to research which components were subject to metal fatigue!!

    Hi Max great video. As you may recall I have exactly the same model and year cayman as you. I went through same experience with my shifter cables. My only concern with numeric cables whilst indestructible, I read that shifting is much heavier needing more effort to change gear, so you also need the whole numeric shifter and linkage kit as well as cables to remedy this, which are expensive. Ive heard they can also be noisy. The later Porsche cables are supposed to be more robust, time will tell.

I have read about this stuff on the forums, but I didn't want to mention anything in my video, in case the issues reported were down to incorrect installation. I think $500 for a pair of cables & 700 for a shifter box is highway robbery. That being said, it's a pretty sad weak point and it seems like nobody else wanted to tackle it in the aftermarket so you have to go with numeric it seems. if you want to beef it up.
    One complaint I hear about the numerics are that the metal-on-metal translates to lots of vibrations on the shifter, which is bullshit, they should have put a better bushing in it. If I'm paying $1100 to re-do the whole shift linkage I don't want rattling in the car.
    I have 75k on my car now and I don't know what shift cables are in it, but the shifter has a bit of slop left/right, so I wonder if they're on their way out. Either way I think I'd rather spend $350 on OEM cables and not deal with vibrations.

    • @MAXREVS

      MrSlowestD16 Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. There is always some kind of trade-off between OEM and after-market, not always for the better as you point out. This is why I have kept my car OEM for all parts to date.

      B. Von Schnauser So sorry to hear that. If it makes you feel any better, it’s happened to me too, as you must know by watching this video ;-) Hope you managed to get the car to a safe location and recovery was speedy. 25,000 miles, that’s low for a 2009 car. I thought the cables snapping could be determined by how many gear shifts the car had been done, but as your car is such low mileage maybe not. As for next options... how quickly do you need the car back on the road? Numeric racing do replacement cables (can’t buy easily in the UK yet, easy in the USA, not sure where you’re based). Then again getting Porsche to fit new cables should last you for at least another 10 years... I didn’t want any aftermarket kit on my Cayman so I went to Porsche (but didn’t forgive them in my head for the poor cable design). Keep us informed as to what you decide please.

      @@MAXREVS I was able to get off the road and into a parking lot while stuck in third gear. A flatbed took the car to the closest Porsche dealer, about 25 minutes away. Like you, I like to keep my car OEM, so I'm letting Porsche put their cables in. The guy at their service department told me he has seen this issue only a hand full of times in the ten years he has been at the dealership. He also said that once they performed the repair, he has not seen those same owners come back with the same problem. I guess I'm taking a bit of a leap of faith with the Porsche cable. I can tell you this; if it happens again, I'll go with the Numeric cables. Everything ok with your Cayman since your repair?

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ignore my other post. Now I know you're letting Porsche fix it. Your dealer is giving you some smooth talk. This is a very common issue. So common the USA was planning on bringing a class action lawsuit. Google it or the links may be on one of my videos. They have changed some brackets as well to ensure the metal cables runs at a different angle. Please make sure your technician is not only putting in new cables but new brackets which Porsche has refined due to this issue. In summary, a metal cable running at an angle thousands and thousands of times can wear in certain places. New bracket is supposed to alleviate the metal fatigue.

I don't have time to research better aftermarket product. this really sucks on porsche's part what poor design. the garage said it's a poor design as the cable has to bend around other parts at 90 degree angle and that's where it broke. the replacement remedies this problem supposedly.. very disappointed in porsche for such poor design & materials

      Yes there is, though tricky to explain without pictures. Please search on this channel for a video along the lines of “Porsche Cayman Breakdown”. At the end of that video, when the car is at the Porsche garage, there is footage showing what you need to do. You need to get under the car, from the rear, have yourself a torch, and look for a couple of connectors onto the tunnel of the transmission. This is where the gear linkages connect to the transmission. Using your fingers you can manipulate the levers to find neutral. Might need someone on the clutch pedal. I don’t know how you will find neutral, but I know it’s possible because I saw them do it on my car. Good luck and sorry to hear your bad news...

    • @PorscheCrusing

      MAX REVS thank you!!! I found the wheel and just a simple turn it returns to neutral. It seems like the up/down cable only works for pushing not pulling. Meaning I can engage first/third/fifth gear no problem. But when I try to return to neutral from those position or engage to second/forth/sixth, the stick is just flimsy, I don’t feel the force applying to the that wheel on the transmission... is this the sign of a failed cable? Is there any quick fix other than replacing? I was planning to trade in at the end this season.....

      I can understand why you may think that... however you should speak to a Porsche technician and they will tell you a new replacement bracket is fitted when new cables are fitted. Porsche acknowledged they passed the shifter cables through an angle which introduced metal fatigue over time. The new cable support has a smaller angle causing less fatigue over time, and less reason to snap. I know what shift I did when the cable snapped, and it was not a ‘power shift’ as you refer to.

      Thanks for the polite reply. I wasn’t too sure if you’d come back all confrontational... for sure I have seen videos on TH-cam where guys are shifting like they are Rocky Stallone from either 1st to 2nd, or 2nd to 3rd. Yes a harsh shift could cause the cables to snap, but you could abuse a brand new manual transmission car and I suspect you’d be hard pushed to snap the cables. This would be the best test, to prove it’s not sheer force alone which causing the snapping of the cables.
