    Commercial airline pilot Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington) has a problem with drugs and alcohol, though so far he's managed to complete his flights safely. His luck runs out when a disastrous mechanical malfunction sends his plane hurtling toward the ground. Whip pulls off a miraculous crash-landing that results in only six lives lost. Shaken to the core, Whip vows to get sober -- but when the crash investigation exposes his addiction, he finds himself in an even worse situation.

      @@sullivandmitry1416 Strongly disagree. It was a mundane thriller derivative of many other thrillers from the 80s & 90s who did it better. The dialogue sucked, and Denzel was completely wooden. I'm not knocking the guy; every great actor occasionally has to take a paycheck role.

    God damn the self loathing is insane in Denzel’s character, the fact that he can’t even see that Don cheadle is trying to help him. He just plays a drug and alcohol addict so well. It’s so believable he doesn’t even see his own life as a life worth living because he’s so self aware of how bad his vices and addictions are.

      Yes has nothing to Do with the booze or self loathing. He does not want to blame a dead Women whom he liked respected and had relations with for the booze he drank. He rather fess up and own up to it then disrespect a dead Women who died trying to save a boy if I remember the movie right.

      I kind of disagree. Cheadle wasnt trying to help him. He was trying to save himself. Washington knew that and got pissed at himself that he thought about throwing an innocent person under the bus. He just got pissed at how selfish people (him and Cheadle) are.

    You could argue that the alcohol really did enhance his performance. In a situation like that covered in anxiety, the alcohol might've given him the edge he needed. Interesting.

Of course Malcolm X was his finest performance, but he was playing a larger than life/real life actual person, so that required a different skill set. Crimson Tide was a different animal, and he was sublime in that film. It's definitely worth a watch.

    This movie doesn’t get anywhere near the amount of recognition it deserves. It’s a perfect demonstration of how destructive addictions can be, and it reminds viewers that anyone can be an addict, even those who hold professions we in society see as most worthy of our trust. It also shows how high functioning some addicts can be. The acting is superb, the script is excellent. The ending is perfect. Everything about this movie is just so well executed.

      Imagine if surgeons drink or do drugs before surgery. That's a scary thought. You wake up and they left something in your body before sewing you back up. I think a lot of cosmetic surgeons really botch people and maybe this is why.

    On one hand he shouldn’t have been drinking but on another hand his drinking had nothing to do with the plane malfunction so I never got why he was punished. He did a miracle while intoxicated. That’s amazing.

    When you’re an addict what may seem crazy to everybody else is normal. Three shots in the morning is light weight. He had to take the edge off the coke probably. He does hate himself but he hates the fact that he’s under attack for doing something no one else could do just for living his version of normal.

      Meow DaLaChow he can take lead or second but in the marvel movies I wouldn’t really call it award winning acting don’t get me wrong RDJ is a legend but he has acted amongst the heavyweights for a long time in serious and non serious movies - Swordfish with Travolta and Volcano with Tommy and also love him in Boogie Nights and Hotel Rwanda

    The beautiful thing about this scene is that it's the first time Denzel & Chitel have appeared in a movie together since "Devil in the blue dress", which was nearly 20 years ago. These two are powerful actors, Bruce Greenwood does a great job in this scene also

    I’ve been a heavy drinker for a few years and one thing I’ve learned is that alcohol can be useful when you want to improvise and bullsh-t your way out of anything. So what Denzel did to save that plane , I can totally understand. Being a drunk of course

      When you're alcoholic, drinking only brings you up to normal or at the very best, slightly intoxicated. So he would've done the same if he was sober. His judgment and experience is what saved the day not him being drunk. Addiction may prison your body and mind but it doesn't prison your soul and your subconscious. Even deep in addiction, addicts can still think, work and fight.

    Reminds me of my darkest times as a drunk. I passed off as fully cognizant most of the time because I'd just spent so long doing it. But people who really knew me could tell how much I'd been drinking by how aggressively I responded to people actually trying to take care of me. When you're a drunk you hate yourself, and if someone tells you there's a way out, you scream "Bullshit, there's nothing to help, and I suspect you're just helping yourself!"

    This movie really gets me thinking about how many talented people across all areas of life have destroyed their lives and potential by drugs and alcohol. When he mentions the 10 other pilots, my guess would be that none of them are alcoholics or drug addicts, yet, Whitaker still outmatches them when it comes to being a skillful and talented pilot. It's a shame to watch people ruin their lives when they are so gifted at whatever they are naturally great at.
    This is a great movie, one that I relate to on a personal level. Denzel as always crushed this role.
