I think the reason Cruise works in this role despite not being accurate to the books description of Reacher is because most people wouldn't expect Cruise to be a badass at first glance.

This is why Tom did such a good portrayal in these movies. He's not big and overpowering, so he instead used strategy to disable the opponents. Strikes to do quick disables then follow ups when needed to put them down.
Only the frame at the motel (Sandy/the girl) is the one I wouldn't buy. That would send me alarm bells that it was a frame-up. Reacher would not do wanton slaughter to a woman, no matter the circumstance, because She was never a credible threat. Even at the Auto shop, he only gave her leading looks, never direct hostility.

You are exactly right. This movie was incredibly enjoyable. Cruise is a great actor. He should have taken the same story and changed the name.
You should really read the books, though. You will find that the characters size plays a pivotal role in every interaction and scenario in the story. Even the fact that he can not ride comfortably in most cars, and can threaten even the toughest guys without saying a word. Cruise is not believable as the guy that hardened military and mercenary spec ops guys would be cautious of just from looks alone.

Season 2 saw Reacher's IQ drop about 50 points from the 150s down to the 100s.
I hope they fix Reacher in season 3. They turned him into a stupid action star in season 2. And they did so by changing the book to remove scenes where he showed intelligence and replaced them with scenes where he was a stupid action figure who thought with his little head.

Ton Cruise put the character of Reacher on the map for a lot of people unfamiliar with the books. For what the movies were, Tom was the best person for the role at that time in spite of the glaring mistakes (height, weight, etc). If Alan Ritchson had been in the movies from the get go - an unknown actor in an unknown franchise - it'd have likely stopped after the first movie.

Strange as it may seem, Tom is very believable in the role. There was an outcry when Michael Keaton was chosen as Batman due to his stature, but he is arguably the best Batman. Now for a real story, I met an ordinary looking,, small to medium size guy who just happened to be an elite soldier who took down guys much taller and supposedly more physically stronger than him. It’s down to strength of character, ability and professionalism that will always surpass looks.

But, I give him credit for bringing the character of Jack Reacher and the stories by Lee Child to the big screen, which opened the way for a more grounded and realistic Reacher with Alan Ritchson. While Alan Ritchson is more physically faithful to how Reacher was described in the books, I gotta say I like both his and Tom Cruise's portrayal of the character. What I like about Tom Cruise's portrayal is that he's very unassuming. Coming across him, like in the bar scene it would be easy to underestimate him, and you wouldn't know you were screwed until it was too late.

Yeah the writing in the second season felt really cliched, Jack telling everyone including people who should have arrested him that he was just going to kill everyone over and over again got dumb real fast. And the group dynamics felt off for some reason even though the actors did a great job. We had the love interest the comedian and the stoic sidekick, just didn't work as well as those style of character from season one.

    • @chalion8399

@@markgrehan3726 I do have problems with the series and some of the novels go very dark too, which I think will be tough to plots to keep using. The 2nd season really diverted from the intent of the novel, which to me, went wrong. But they couldn't use the "Davy Crockett (nuclear device)" as a plot device because it would have been too great a time lapse (50+ years since decommissioning), to be believable.
