10:50 slight error. Aragorn’s army DIDN’T infact ignore Minas Morgul. They went straight to its gates, and challenged whatever insider there (Nazgul or otherwise) to sally out and meet them. But it was disturbingly quite and no answer nor a force came to challenge them. I believe it was also debated whether or not to retake Minas Morgul but then again it was refused, but i am not sure about this part. In the end, they decided to just demolish its bridges so no force can flank them from behind, and then went to the Black Gates
I love the fact that King Dain and Brand stayed behind personally, to cover their forces withdrawal. Probably knowing there was little chance they’d see another day! I further love the aspect of that King Dain was so furious upon the death of his friend King Brand, that he defended his body till his strength gave out like he was his own brother! Not unlike High kings Gil Galad, and Elendil in that respect! Two mighty champions of their peoples standing together to oppose a horrific evil!
Slight error, Sam and frodo didn't turn on one another before Shelob, but rather went in her cave willingly, suspecting something was wrong and got separated after they confronted the sight of a thousand eyes in the dark. Also, the Mt doom didn't erupt immediately, Sam and Frodo made it down to the base of the mountain before collapsing from exhaustion.
You also have to wonder if the way Bilbo gave up the ring, even counts. He turned his hand and let gravity do it, seemingly unable to just let it go. I suppose the fact he even did counts for something.
That was an awesome battle. Much courage, bravery, sacrifice, and heroism. Much of good triumphing over evil! It goes without saying, the good guys had the better commanders, the better tacticians. Some 1st age battles would be awesome. The Sack of Gondolin, the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, The Siege of Angband. Or the Kin Slayings would be interesting as well. Love the channel.
There's one more battle that barely gets mentioned there-bunch of orcs invade Rohan and the Ents tackle them somewheres out on the Wold while all this is going on, Treebeard tells Our Heros about it as they head northwards and stop at Isengard.
You could argue, that the war of the ring went on for many years after these events, since quite a number of the men in the east and south fought on, sometimes up to almost a generation. It is never clear said what happened to the orcs and trolls after the war, but a few bands may have survived in the deepest caves of the Misty Mountain and other places. What Morgoth and Sauron had created was not gone from the world.
The War in the North battles really shows the multi-theater aspect of the War of the Ring. If only these northern battles were depicted in a show or movie…
Oh yeah, the Battle of the Black Gate. The final battle against Sauron and all his evil. Sure would be awkward if there was another, less climactic conflict afterwards involving a forgotten ex-wizard and a greedy short guy ravaging some beautiful countryside.
And people think the movie has too many endings. But in the books defense, it was kinda cool seeing the change in the hobbits and their military knowledge actually showing
I simultaneously believe that the scouring of the Shire is the most important part of the book and really the emotional core of Lord of the Rings as a story but if added to the movies it would've ruined the trilogy. It really speaks to how well PJ understood the difference between the two mediums of movies and books and what works for which. The scouring is intentionally anticlimactic and a big downer because it reflects Tolkiens own experiences of the "great" war. No matter how valiant you fight and how noble you believe your cause you will never get to return home, cause the home you left behind will not be the same that you return to, be it directly by the consequences of the war as in the scouring or just by the march of time. This works wonderful in a book format cause a book is inherently a slower paced and more personal experience that encourages reflection and introspection whilst in a visual media like a movie it would've completely taken the air out of the whole experience.
Wouldn't have worked in the movie for reasons I think @Swedsman covered. But it works in the book showing that Hobbits and Men have "grown up" and no longer need the wizards and the elves to protect them from the forces of darkness in the world. It also showed that darkness and evil would continue to exist but even without the elder races it could be confronted and overthrown. An additional note there was to show that even the Shire wasn't untouchable by the outside world and needed to be alert for darker influences.

The men who were unmanned once they reached the end of North Ithilien and went instead to assail Cair Andros numbered between 800-1,000. Leaving Aragorn with an army of 5,800-5,500 depending on how many casualties they took in the previous assault. Aragorn had already made his dispositions before calling on the Black Gate. I kind of hate in LOTR how, the second the ring is destroyed, all of Sauron's forces immediatelly flee or surrender, or are otherwise destroyed I get the idea of it But like. Gondor was asbolutely in no position to keep fighting. The Easterlings could 100% have kept fighting and took a bunch of land for themselves The Orcs makes sense, their entire reason for fighting was because Sauron bassically enslaved them to his will But the human allies, should have gone to infighting to fill the void, or redoubled their efforts to take land, now they'd be the ones fully controling it
I think infighting is 100% what they did. Without Sauron uniting them, many States would no longer have a reason to go fight these better armed and often better led and organized Western powers, instead pursuing local goals. Other polities would fight everyone, Western or domestic, for security or resources. Others would focus on the West, perhaps forming coalitions or even one big coalition, but that'd be a shell of what Sauron fielded. Also, the logistics and politics would be much more complex without Sauron taking care of all that. For a historical parallel, think the Gallic Wars. Rome was NOT militarily stronger than the Gauls. But the Gauls were politically divided; even Vercingetorix never fully fixed that. The Belgae actually formed a massive coalition at one point, marched on Caesar, fought (and lost) a minor action, and then dispersed and went home. I absolutely believe the Belgae COULD have destroyed Caesar right here, BUT: 1) Logistics. Contrary to popular belief, the Gauls had sophisticated, advanced Kingdoms thanks to contact with Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans. However, they still lagged behind the 'civilised' States; the Belgae in particular were actually closer to the more traditional Britons. Keeping a massive army in the field wasn't an option. They had to attack or disperse. Obviously they should have attacked, but there are others factors. 2) Politics. Here there are two conflicting interests: casualties and glory. Glory was a good way for tribal leaders to cement their power within the tribe. However, a direct attack on the legions of Rome would cause terrible casualties. Casualties that risked leaving large tribes no longer large and small tribes at risk of extinction. So, who's going to man the front line? 3) Finally, the Belgae... won. Tribal warfare often wasn't decided in battle. It was all about showing strength. They had shown their numbers, and their willingness to fight. By their logic, that probably counted as winning. Especially since Caesar didn't attack them. Without Mordor's industrial might, how would the Easterlings and Haradrim and Variags field sufficient armies to threaten a newly revitalized Gondor? How would these tribes get along enough to cooperate effectively? How would they decide who fights in the front ranks? Would they even fight, or use their army to obtain diplomatic concessions?
pippin didn't say the eagles were coming, he has just killed a troll and was going unconscious when the last thing he heard was, "the eagles are coming"
I just came to a realization. Could it be that Tolkien (unintentionally or intentionally) used the common theme of Dwarven ‘greed’ against the orcs of mordor, by using the mithril coat? If so, that would be incredibly poetic. How Sauron (accidentally) amplified the dwarve’s desires for riches before, via the dwarven rings, to cause the downfall of dwarven kingdom after dwarven kingdom, only for a similar sort of greed to plague his forces over a piece of dwarven making, thus allowing Frodo and Sam to slip into mordor relatively undetected, thus resulting in the defeat of Sauron, and his own kingdom?
@@bmer92k86 The enigma that is Tom Bombadil and his true identity was never revealed by Tolkien. We can speculate and theorise all we want, but the fact is Tolkien died before he gave any more information on the character.

2:43 Ok, come on K+G, you can do better than this. Esgaroth and Dale are *not* the same city - Dale is located immediately next to Erebor in the location shown, while Esgaroth and Lake-Town are located on the Long Lake much farther downstream. Also, the river on which all of this is located is *not* the River Redwater (aka the Carnen), but the River Running (aka the Celduin). The Redwater is another river entirely; it's the one forming the eastern border of the Kingdom of Dale on the previous map, flowing south from the Iron Hills and joining the River Running near Dorwinion. You do such a great job on so many aspects of your videos, so it really surprises me when you make obvious mistakes like this that 5 minutes of checking a map or looking something up would have avoided.
@@brandondavis7777 And yet so right. Dale the city and Dale the kingdom are not the same thing. The Kingdom of Dale is the full extent of the lands ruled by King Brand at this time, of which the city of Dale is the capitol. The city of Dale is what I'm talking about here, which is what K+G in this video have mislabeled as Esgaroth, which is a different city located farther down the river (the river is also mislabeled). The K+G team seem to have conflated the separate cities of Dale and Esgaroth into one...pretty much what you've done.
As is always the case. However one has to consider that filmmakers have to cut off certain scenes to save time. Even with these commissions, each episode of this trilogy is already nearly four hours long. To include every detail would be made the movie insanely long.
Well yes, but on the other hand no, since he never used the ring (I am not sure if that would make a difference). Bombadil even put the ring on his finger but he was unmoved anyway.
The biggest part missing from the 3rd movie is these details of what is happening in the wider world. Such as the armies of southern Gondor, the blocking force that was sent to guard the road and stop the men of Rohan from getting to Minas tirith in time. Plus the movie completely forgot about the easterlings after frodo and Sam saw them entering the black gate. Also they didn't show the outer defenses that surrounded the city. They also left out Prince Imrahil and the swan knights as well as elronds sons and the grey rangers
@@IshavedChewbacca which would lead to its own destruction? The Ring had a will of its own to be reunited with its creator. I doubt it would have decided to destroy itself just because Gollum betrayed it temporarily

These are the LOTR videos I didn’t know I needed
Samwise is the best character in lotr. Steady, unbreakable, unwavering samewise.
I get goosebumps every time I watch the scene where he carries frodo.
Another gem, thank you!
I kind of hate in LOTR how, the second the ring is destroyed, all of Sauron's forces immediatelly flee or surrender, or are otherwise destroyed
I get the idea of it
But like. Gondor was asbolutely in no position to keep fighting. The Easterlings could 100% have kept fighting and took a bunch of land for themselves
The Orcs makes sense, their entire reason for fighting was because Sauron bassically enslaved them to his will
But the human allies, should have gone to infighting to fill the void, or redoubled their efforts to take land, now they'd be the ones fully controling it
I think infighting is 100% what they did.
I absolutely believe the Belgae COULD have destroyed Caesar right here, BUT:
1) Logistics.
Not sure why you included Lake Town/Esgaroth on the battle map. The initial battle was fought outside the city of Dale.
pippin didn't say the eagles were coming, he has just killed a troll and was going unconscious when the last thing he heard was, "the eagles are coming"
Absolutely fantastic and keep these coming
These videos are awesome, although it would be great if you guys could do some Silmarilion stuff too!
Great summary. Helps me getting into playing Lord of The Rings Online
I just came to a realization. Could it be that Tolkien (unintentionally or intentionally) used the common theme of Dwarven ‘greed’ against the orcs of mordor, by using the mithril coat? If so, that would be incredibly poetic. How Sauron (accidentally) amplified the dwarve’s desires for riches before, via the dwarven rings, to cause the downfall of dwarven kingdom after dwarven kingdom, only for a similar sort of greed to plague his forces over a piece of dwarven making, thus allowing Frodo and Sam to slip into mordor relatively undetected, thus resulting in the defeat of Sauron, and his own kingdom?
i enjoy this fantasy lore analysis very much sir, thank you
excellent as always
Excellent series! I hope one day we'll get a Homeworld Series too!
These are so good kings & general. Good pivot to make a second channel on fantasy!! 💪🏽💯
Great video! would like to see videos about lore not covered in movies such as the silmaril
Would it perhaps be possible to cover the history of the Mechwarrior universe? Or cover the Dominion War from "Star Trek: Deep Space 9"?
The Master Tom Bombadil also gives away the ring willingly. A fact often overlooked.
Yeah but he was somehow inmune to it. The real challenge is to refuse it when it can corrupt you.
Tom bombadil was eru iluvatar
don't remember him from the films
@@bmer92k86 The enigma that is Tom Bombadil and his true identity was never revealed by Tolkien. We can speculate and theorise all we want, but the fact is Tolkien died before he gave any more information on the character.
@@theawesomeman9821
He wasnt in the Films
Everyone :- We could just use the eagles .
Gandalf :- They are my triumph card .
Small chance of victory, cero chance of survival... What are we waiting for?
Very interesting. Thanks for posting.
Great stuff as always!!
are you going to cover the silmarillion battles also?
Just another reminder that return of the king is the best movies ever
If you want more fantasy battles, set in a great set of novels, try the Malazan Book of the Fallen. It'll have all the battles you could want, in a complexity to dazzle you.
very wel put together
Hell yeah, brother.
A documentary about the cosmere would be very nice!
Would love to hear some warhammer 40k battles done by you.
Yeah they always seem to make silly mistakes like this, shame.
@@aidenharrison9613 My "favorite" one is the animations in their Pacific War series where the ships are all sailing backwards. 🤦♂
Esgaroth is a city in the Kingdom of Dale, muppet. You're so confident, and so wrong.
After watching this I can clearly say the books are definetley better then the movies
As is always the case. However one has to consider that filmmakers have to cut off certain scenes to save time. Even with these commissions, each episode of this trilogy is already nearly four hours long. To include every detail would be made the movie insanely long.
aragorn: for frodo
This is a masterpiece
Brilliantly done. Would be cool to see you guys cover the 2nd Age.
Would You guys Do the Books Of Narnia?Just Asking..
They should. The author, CS Lewis was friends with Tolkien and they both helped each other write their books.
(sees channel name) Huh, almost styling itself after 'Kings and generals' channel.
*clicks and hears narrator*
Bloody hell. it is them!
It's crazy to think Frodo finally gave into the ring at the very last second and almost fucked the whole quest. Thank God for Samwise the brave
Peter Jackson should’ve made complementary films of the other battles that took place while the Battle of the Black Gate was going on.
Guys.
You have to do the first age one day. The battles are epic
The best part is when Pippin slays the Troll.
Does anybody know who are the two men in the water at 20:00?
Faramir also handed over the One Ring willingly in the books.
Well yes, but on the other hand no, since he never used the ring (I am not sure if that would make a difference). Bombadil even put the ring on his finger but he was unmoved anyway.
Faramir never had the One Ring, in books or movie.
Could you do some Warhammer 40k battles? The siege of Terra or the Istvan dropsite would be awesome!
King Dain deserves more recognition in the series
Battles of Beleriand next please
One thing of note: Gollum slipping and falling into the lava was actually one of Eru Iluvatar's only direct acts to influence the fate of Arda.
maybe. Another theory is that the Precious punished him for swearing by It and breaking his vow
@@IshavedChewbacca which would lead to its own destruction? The Ring had a will of its own to be reunited with its creator. I doubt it would have decided to destroy itself just because Gollum betrayed it temporarily
nah
@Jindřich Sedláček I've always been told it was the second time He directly intervened in the fate of Arda. The first being when He sank Numenor into the sea.
I wouldn't say He "pushed" Gollum, but He might have guided his steps towards that pool of blood.
The Wheel of time series, the 3 worlds series by Ian Irvine, Suikoden series of wars by Konami
10:40 the Dark Lord knows so much as you say, Mithrandir, will he not rather smile than fear, and with his little finger crush us like a fly that tries to sting him?'
'No, he will try to trap the fly and take the sting,' said Gandalf. 'And there are names among us that are worth more than a thousand mail-clad knights apiece. No, he will not smile.'
The rest of the quote
Any future series on warhammer 40k ? Siege of Vraks, Armageddon campaign or the Sabbath world campaigns to name a few ?
One of my fav battle of war of the Ring form both movie and book.
Could we please get a video on the Battle of Autobot City?
sons of gondor of roan . my brothers . i see you in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me . a day will come when the courage of men will fails when we forsake the our friends and break all bonds of fellowship . but it is not this day. an hour of wolves and shattered shield when the age of men comes crashing down but it is not this day. this day we will fight . brilliant quote by aragorn . one of my fav characters. brilliant movie. love your work. from sri lanka.
It would be awesome to see battles from the Dune saga. Fantastic videos!
Great video.
Really enjoying the series. Have you considered doing “Legend of the Galactic Heroes” for a potential space opera?
