Hmm. I see I'm 7m 16s into this [almost one year old: today being 29 June 2023] video ...and I hit subscribe ...which is kind of a record for subscribing to a tech channel. I think I've learned more in the past 7 minutes - in an understandable-to-me fashion - than I have in several years (yes, a compliment to you: and quite a feat after going-on-30-plus-years as a sys admin + builder ...yeah, started in 8086 years lol). Kudos. And thnx. *Backstory:* ...I just finished an Asus Prime H670 (Plus D4)/core i5 12500 build workstation (backup workstation for me, duo-use as wife's primary [gaming] desktop ...her laptop sees for more use lol) a couple of days ago. I found an Asus ThunderboltEx 4 at Amazon Warehouse (basically for ½ price) - and in checking, saw the Prime H670 mb supported it - and ordered and installed the board. While reading the ThunderboltEX manual (up front: the last build I did was Ryzen 4 based - however, much updated since, though now obviously EOL - and [it was my understanding] Thunderbolt was pretty much Mac specific back then ...so I was more curious than anything else), I noted that the mainboard support instructions specified _"The Thunderbolt card can only be used when installed to the PCIEX16(G4)_2 slot. Ensure to install your Thunderbolt card to the PCIEX16(G4) slot."_ *Note:* I _did_ use the required slot of course ...and the installed card was recognized by the BIOS ...and the drivers installed to Windows 11 ...*apparently* without issues, although I've not tested anything yet ...because I don't have TB peripherals - yet lol - to test it with. But. This mandated slot requirement seemed a bit counter-intuitive since the ThunderboltEX 4 installation manual listed the specs of the card as _"PCIE 3.0 x4 interface"_ ...and I wondered what the deuce was up with that specificity lol. Lack of curiousity over the years has not been one of my many-and-varied failings. ;-) Hence, my coming across your quite excellent explanatory video. And appreciation.

To the other part of Your comment, Thunderbolt is very finicky and now with Thunderbolt 4, Vendor specific in implementation! The parameters for Thunderbolt 4 are much tighter than Thunderbolt 3 was. USB-C 20Gbps 2x2 is easier to implement! Yes the Slot matters! As well as the Motherboard Thunderbolt Header cables for Bios support!

Speaking of display port...read the specs...understand the cable and audio and multi monitor thing...so what? Got a good display port cable...somethings are snappier....some things are wonky...speed is relative to apps and features...some are coded well some coded in a haze... But for display port is there a must use case?
Hi Mike Quinton, Great Question! We could Speak Volumes about Interfaces! Not even getting into Refresh Rates... Especially DisplayPort, HDMI, SDI etc. Anything Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4, Video is always ingested through DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort. All of the AMD Radeon Pro Display Adapters for 4 Monitor Input use DisplayPort and the 6 Monitor Adapters use Mini DisplayPort. We use DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapters then go to SDI cables. Most Monitor problems using DisplayPort going to black can be Solved by using HDMI. And anything We do for Video to Show what We're doing on Screen has to be taken from HDMI then converted to SDI for the Broadcast Video Switch then sent to the Video Recorder. The only thing advantageous about DisplayPort are the clips on the Connector to lock the connection. That's it as far as We're concerned! Otherwise, We avoid it when possible! Even any Display Out to a 4K Display will be either HDMI on Consumer Devices or SDI on Pro Displays. DisplayPort looks really good on paper! Perception and Perspective! Thanks for Asking!
Hi@@mqcapps, Interesting to note, DisplayPort was suppose to fix the problems created with HDMI like a loose connector. But DisplayPort only created other problems like black screens of video drop out. HDMI is here to stay! Keep it Simple and Make it Work! Geffen came out with a proprietary technology for HDMI to keep cables attached. But that screw attachment point has to be on both the Device and Cable. Other companies have also introduced their own systems for grasping cables and not just HDMI to keep secure connections. Running all of the Cables We use is quite the ordeal when looking at what goes where. I use Labels and Color Coding but I digress. Yes to HDMI!
IDK what a eGPU is. But thunderbolt4 is 4 GEN3 cpu lanes. With NVMe 1.4 drives that AIC is 16 PCIe cpu lanes GEN4. Twice the speed per lane and 4 times the number of lanes equals 8 times the throughput in theory. Like I say I don't understand your application. Or I don't know which AIC your referring too. IDK
Hi Guilladgui8259, Welcome. Performance should be the same. The issues we encountered were Firmware and Drivers which affects Connectivity. When Thunderbolt works, it works. Then it does not work, it's PITA. And Thunderbolt can be hit or miss. Thunderbolt is finicky based on Chipsets and Vendor implementation.
@@BuildOrBuy first I wanna the l you for your help 🙌. Yea I decided to upgrade my system my old pc is been working well with thunderbolt 3 card Alphine ridge from gigabyte. The only think I notice is when I have my Apollo interface and the computer goes to sleep it crashes when I wake up from sleep I’m guessing that part of how the system controls the card . But I will update my system to a asrock z690 Taichi motherboard which has thunderbolt 4 built in. Or the aus z790 gaming f and the thunderbolt 4 card . I like asus but the cheapest option is asrock I’m still deciding also I’m planning to get the intel 13700k

So total cost will become ($479 for MB + $109 for TB card) ~$590 which seems a lot for me Do you think going with Gigabyte Z690 AERO D (rev. 1.x) support 3 4k monitors without external GPU? what would be the cheapest/most budget friendly way to run 3 4K monitors without external GPU or TB card? Do you suggest i go with lower tier Motherboard and spend money on a cheap external GPU like 3050? DDR5 is a MHz increase, but it doesn't reach twice the throughput/sec of QUAD channel ram. DDR5 is an increase in MHz with a huge increase in latency. PCIe 5 is twice the throughput/sec but nothting is PCIe 5 to plug in it. DDR5 and PCIe 5 are just speed talk to make AM4/5 and Intel 1500/1700 fan boys feel better about crappy I/O boards. You can't run even one quad NVMe raid card or quadruple your ram throughput with 8 channel ram. I had dual channel ram in 2002. Two decades old tech. Every corporation in the world is running 8 channel Epyc or dual Xeon 12 channel ram.
Hello, I've been watching your videos for quite some time now, and I have to say that I'm highly appreciative of your videos at work. I have several questions I need some answers to, and this may need a video response I'm not entirely certain. Moreover, I just graduated from college obtaining my two-year degree in information technology, nevertheless, there are still things that I don't understand or in confused. Furthermore, I started a tomshardware form on some these questions, and well didn't get answers for the most part and was left to do hours of research and figure out most of answers. Nevertheless, here are my two builds. First build which is main rig Motherboard asrock x299 Killier sli/ac rev 1.0 bios 2.00 Gpu's 2 AORUS GeForce RTX™ 2080 Ti XTREME WATERFORCE WB 11G ( ruuning in SLI configeration) sound card Sound Blaster AE-7 Capture Card Live Gamer HD - C985 Cpu intel i9 7960x 16 core 32 thread 44 pcie lan's Memory 2 kits of Ballistix Sport LT 32G DDR4 8x288, 2400Hz, BLS4C8G4D240FSB (8x288, 2400Hz) total of 64GB storage Nvme Sn770 1 Tb for os western digital black mechinal 4tb. 1 Lg optical drive. Now the second build is x299 also. motherboard asus prime edition 30 cpu 9900x 44 lanes as well for pcie. the rest of the second build doesn't matter much. Now I have bought the Asus HYPER M.2 X16 GEN 4 CARD Hyper M.2 x16 Gen 4 Card and 4 western digital 2 TB Sn770 Now I'm concerned I'm going to run out of pcie lanes when putting the expantion card in either system. Ideally, I would like to run two GPU, the expansion card running all 4 M.2 drives and also have that one terabyte m.2 to as my operating system. Moreover, if I was to use the Asus prime edition 30 board I wouldn't need to use the soundcard and always by an external capture card. Nevertheless, my question is can I run two GPU's in SLI configuration and still runs 16 slot station card along the top of one terabyte m.2, because I've noticed that the third slot on the prime 30 board runs at 8X. Will this be a problem. My original plan was to run the expansion card on the asrock board, but with everything connected to it, such as, capture card, soundcard, GPU's,m.2 etc. when I got the counting PC IE lanes, I wound up not having enough. So ultimately how does a computer delegate PC IE lanes when you had exceeded the amount, or will it still recognize the hardware. Yes! Two Seperate technologies but go hand in hand. Both are being offered together. There is no PCIe 4.0 Chipset with DDR5 that We know of!

Hello, I've been watching your videos for quite some time now, and I have to say that I'm highly appreciative of your videos at work. I have several questions I need some answers to, and this may need a video response I'm not entirely certain. Moreover, I just graduated from college obtaining my two-year degree in information technology, nevertheless, there are still things that I don't understand or in confused. Furthermore, I started a tomshardware form on some these questions, and well didn't get answers for the most part and was left to do hours of research and figure out most of answers. Nevertheless, here are my two builds.
First build which is main rig

2 kits of Ballistix Sport LT 32G DDR4 8x288, 2400Hz, BLS4C8G4D240FSB (8x288, 2400Hz) total of 64GB

Nvme Sn770 1 Tb for os
western digital black mechinal 4tb.
1 Lg optical drive.
Now the second build is x299 also.
motherboard
asus prime edition 30
cpu 9900x 44 lanes as well for pcie.
the rest of the second build doesn't matter much.
Now I have bought the Asus HYPER M.2 X16 GEN 4 CARD Hyper M.2 x16 Gen 4 Card
and 4 western digital 2 TB Sn770
Now I'm concerned I'm going to run out of pcie lanes when putting the expantion card in either system. Ideally, I would like to run two GPU, the expansion card running all 4 M.2 drives and also have that one terabyte m.2 to as my operating system. Moreover, if I was to use the Asus prime edition 30 board I wouldn't need to use the soundcard and always by an external capture card. Nevertheless, my question is can I run two GPU's in SLI configuration and still runs 16 slot station card along the top of one terabyte m.2, because I've noticed that the third slot on the prime 30 board
runs at 8X. Will this be a problem.
My original plan was to run the expansion card on the asrock board, but with everything connected to it, such as, capture card, soundcard, GPU's,m.2 etc. when I got the counting PC IE lanes, I wound up not having enough. So ultimately how does a computer delegate PC IE lanes when you had exceeded the amount, or will it still recognize the hardware. I will also provide links to all of necessary components
