    I don't know if this has been mentioned already but I totally take apart my old bras and use their cups to make new bras. If the foam cup is still ok in your t-shirt bra, take off the band and either make a pattern with the pieces or frankenstein it into a pattern you purchased. If the fabric is looking a little worn out I pick the cover off and put new fabric on the cup too! It's a real game-changer.

  • @jipii1981
    @jipii1981 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1158

    You should try to salvage the T-shirt bra :D The cups have probably molded over time to your breast contours and might be impossible to replace. Fix the broken parts with your new bra making knowledge.

      She could probably use the pattern for the band and straps and just skip the cup steps and instead use the cups from her bra. Especially since it seems that the problems are the band and clasps being worn out.

    'pea ko' is how its pronounced - it's french so a silent 't' , a lot of lingerie terms seem to be french ...
    She did really well for first go, I remember a couple of failed attempts during my fashion school lingerie class. We had these industrial lingerie machines though which were a bit scary to use (clunky and noisy) such as the elasticator, the stretch overlocker and the bar tack. I found the pattern making book 'Bare Essentials: Bras - Construction and Pattern Drafting For Lingerie Design' by Jennifer Lynne Matthews-Fairbanks great for learning how to pattern draft your own bra from your exact measurements.There is a matching book in the series for undies too. 🙂

  • @Cassiterit3
    @Cassiterit3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The molded foam cups are really some of the only ways to make smooth t-shirt bras. Everything else has seams that end up being visible :/ But the foam liners are sold on their own, and fabric like tricot (thin but soft and very stretchy) is often used to cover them on the outside. Even though foam isn't environmentally friendly, if you use fold-over elastic on the sides of the cups, they end up very stable, and comfortable. Often, I see them sold as swimsuit liners, but they can definitely be used for bras!

    I just stepped into bra sewing too and am OBSESSSSSED!!! I made a couple using scuba knit and the Watson bra pattern & it is sooo coomfy! I stocked up on way more of scuba knit because of that. Super comfy and easy to sew. I haven’t tried in a thin white fitted tee shirt yet but I tried on a muscle tee and it’s adorably cute and comfy! My mom saw and told me to make her some too (that’s right TOLD, not asked lol).

  • @AsMadebyHannah
    @AsMadebyHannah 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    For molded cup bra patterns I'd recommend the mystic bra from orange lingerie. I've made it 3x so far! I'd definitely recommend using the resources on her blog for where to get the molded foam cups though, cause I'm pretty sure the ones I used weren't sturdy enough and had some issues. It's also a partial band which is a bit different of a construction technique from the black beauty bra so you can try a new technique! I've been sewing my own bras for years, and they've honestly become one of my favorite types of projects to do since they come together relatively quick and are super satisfying. 😊

    You can purchase cups readymade that just need to be covered in fabrics. Could go between the two layers of your existing bra pattern, fill out the cup a bit and give a more structured shape and get rid of any puckering from tension.

    Go contact Erin again as she didn't send you a T-shirt bra but a supportive one with an extra C section to help the breast to be supported extra from the sides. That will always be visible under a t-shirt. If it folds a bit on top of the breasts it could be you need a smaller size. You need a ready-made cup, like in swimming wear. The whole bra making will be almost the same but the fabric will cover the ready-made cup inside and outside. Wish you luck with making that one. Was lovely to see you make such a beautiful bra.

    • @sadegodfrey4738
      @sadegodfrey4738 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      As the for the ready-made cups, she could totally salvage the ones from her old t-shirt bra.
      Also, I'd suggest avoiding bra patterns with multiple seams in the cups (like this one has one upper and one lower cup pieces, others have two lower cup pieces and one upper cup), because they do tend to show through thinner/form-fitting clothes. It's better to use a stretchy fabric and cut a single piece to line the outside of your cup.

    • @tinekejoldersma
      @tinekejoldersma 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sadegodfrey4738 No, the inner cup will be just as old and ready for the carbage as the outer. And it's always made with what I told.

    • @emmao6578
      @emmao6578 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@tinekejoldersma there's no reason not to use the cups from her t-shirt bra if they're still intact and supportive for her. Different parts of the bra will degrade quicker than others, I've got a hole in one of my bras in the same place wendy has because I had a jagged edge on my nail that caught the lace but I've had the bra for less than 6 months. There's no reason to throw away the whole bra if something like that happens.

    • @tinekejoldersma
      @tinekejoldersma 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emmao6578 That's something completely different, then the bra is oke but just a hole. Old bras are old. No need for recycling. If you make a new bra you buy new inserts.

    Try using sew in foam (also a product from Emerald Erin) and eliminating the power bar. The foam will provide more structure like a normal tee shirt bra and eliminating the power bar will give you fewer seams/lines that will show through. I also think experimenting with vertical seam cups vs horizontal would be beneficial because you can see for your own body which one gives a more classic tee shirt bra shape (very round).

Personally, I just keep the seams because I don't mind the way it looks. There are also some patterns drafted for heat moulded cups (mystic from orange lingerie). You could use that pattern with the moulded cups from the old t-shirt bra you liked, and just replace everything else in the bra. Just be careful when unpicking the original bra so you have enough allowance to sew the new underwire channeling to. 😃😃 Happy sewing!!

    I'm just seeing your videos, but on this one, if you shorten the cup where the middle horizontal seam is by what looks like maybe a quarter-inch; you can eliminate the puckers. It looks like the cup is just a smidge too large for your fit. I love that pattern myself and can't wait to make it too.

  • @TheFashionWHT

    Also maybe that elastic or ribbon in the middle of the cups needs to be curved just a tad to make it more form fitting or since you have the pattern, maybe try making a muslin cup and then use that as the pattern so it’s one whole piece instead of two. Either way this looks so gorgeous like I’m already thinking of this gorgeous floral mesh I have that needs to be a bra and panty set 🤣🤣🤣 i need to order this pattern!!

Buying from overseas is possible but the quality and fit haven't been great so far. I'll probably have to make my own pattern since I haven't found a pattern in my size.

    In my experience with the t-shirt bra, it needs to be a completely smooth cup with no seams. The seams would be texturally visible with thin fabric- those super thin t-shirts are a bear to deal with! I even wear nude-colored compression tops underneath sometimes... super comfortable, and no back bumps!
    Origami Customs out of Canada has some ethically-made binders and compression tops that are super durable and cute as heck.

    A real victory! I'm so glad you did this and that there is a company that provides all of the material and notions.
    Still not in my size (42 DD) but maybe that will be the next victory!

    Instead of a bar tack, sometimes I set my zig zag to the shortest length and closest stitch width and it creates a similar enough stitch.

      My skill level is not at bra-making-level yet, but I really enjoyed your excitement at the instructions your kit came with. I looove good instructions with a pattern. 😍 Looking forward to being able to make my own undies one day.

    i buy my bras to fit on the tightest hook because I seem to be getting a little fatter each season so it’s nice to have some ease for future padding built in 🤣 I definitely want to try this but it’s still just a wee bit advanced for me atm haha

    This is so amazing!! It came out so beautifully and I love it! And I can’t believe the pattern and materials are so inexpensive (and they ship to the US and it’s not like $10 shipping 🤗). I literally just ordered a pattern for panties/thong from this designer, and I was feeling overwhelmed about all the fabric and materials I currently have so now I have a way to make some creations lol. I need all of this lol

    Hi Wendy - I absolutely love your videos and find you, and them, very inspiring! I'm brand new to sewing and so being able to sew something like this is a dream at the moment but omg, this is a fantastic bra! You did a crazy good job too! This bra has all the things a good bra should have (those with boobs, anyway!) - non-stretch straps in the front - check (essential to stop bounce), side support - check (great if you have round boobs that are full at the sides as it brings them forward), underwire (everyone over a b cup appreciates this), double straps (great idea to distribute weight and very pretty!) and decent sized hook and eye fastenings (insurance!) plus the bra is so pretty - it is just so well thought out. I'm in the UK and so was holding my breath that the site ships internationally and it does so I am so overjoyed! I'm going to order the pattern and the kit so that when I'm competent enough to tackle, it will be there ready and waiting! Thanks so much for this video! xx

    Nice job to be the first time making a bra. Liz Sew channel I will recommend for kind of tutorial in bra. I am coping a bustier top for almost two weeks and this time I am following with the muslin fabric first then I will use the final fabric and ooh wow its hard though. At this point I want just to take time and start all over again but with stretch fabric instead muslin. So 👊 you did great.

    As someone who has a big cup size but a small band size I never find cute bras!! I’ve been thinking about this for months!!!

    Pin up girls patterns by The Bra makers supply has a specific pattern for t-shirt bras. You use foam cups so that you dont have any cup seams. I think its called the Amanda T shirt Bra pattern. You can also get it from Bra Builders if you are in the US and dont want to pay Cnada shipping.

    Wendy, you're awesome! I've wanted to make my own bras for awhile since I have a difficult time finding bras that fit properly. I'm heavy busted with a small rib cage. This makes me a little braver to try. ☺️ Thanks for the video!

    I never knew that thing about the three hooks and how they compensate for loss of elasticity!! 🤯 EDIT just want to add when I reached the end of the video that I really like your style of explaining what you're doing and I'm definitely sticking around for more sewing. Subscribed!
