You can just top stitch the pockets on, that’s how they normally are on cargo pants and jackets. Nice job on the binding, not always easy but it looks beautiful!
More videos like these!!! Keep doing outfits which are out there/not 'normal' ! Would love to see different styles, such as darker gothier ones ;) You're amazing!! (I actually loved this video so much lmao can you tell) I love Billie and you ROCK those outfits omg
Hey Wendy! A straight stitch foot might help with the pulling and puckering. I use it to stitch up loose, thin, and silky fabrics. BTW- I’ve been subscriber since 2012!!!❤️ I love you - sorry I had to fan girl for a moment 💁🏾♀️

Hi Wendy! I went to sewing school a few years back now. We went to a factory and they had a machine that scanned and punched a hole (on the body fabric) into each corner where the pocket should sit, it then went to the sewer who used these teeny holes as guides to line up and attach the pocket to the body. We did the same in class using a sharp tool used for pattern making, using a ruler to figure out where the pocket should sit. It worked well! In saying that, pins were banned at our school due to not being efficient enough as we were learning how to sew to industry standard, so we were used to eyeballing things. We often used techniques like notching to line up fabric when sewing instead of pins. Pockets, especially the ones you did, are so hard. You did so well haha, I just avoid them all together! xx
what i admire the most about you is not only you are able to transform and make clothes from scratch, you're also amazing at posing for videos and photos and also producing videos!! i admire what you do and i hope one day i can be like you to be good at what i want to do in life!!!! i just found out about you and your channel like five minutes ago and i'm glad i found you!!! thank you for the great patience and content!!!!
Omg WENDY that second look is EVERYTHING!!! U can bet as soon as crafting stores open back up I’m going to find some pretty pink stretch fabric to recreate the tshirt and gloves !
WITH THE SHEARS: cut your pieces out with them rather than normal fabric scissors 😁 that way you're not having to cut through a bunch of layers later. Think about it like serging kind of?
a quick note about pinking shears! when using regular scissors i tend to clamp the handles in my hand to try and get a closer cut and this works fairly well since the blades are not serrated. however, if you put any sideways or perpendicular tension on the pinking shears while you're cutting the serrated edges of the shears will get stuck in the fabric and tear your fabric up instead of getting a clean cut! i learned this the hard way and thought i had bad scissors. try and cut straight down with less force and let the shears do all the work and you'll get a much cleaner cut! hope this helps! absolutely adore your videos i've made so many cute mini backpacks with your videos as guidance. wish you the best!
The Blue one! #fav... TBH: I Just love your voice (am I the only person here for the WW ASMR of it all?!) and the hipster passion and intense diligence you bring to a hobby my mother and grandmother taught me, from the age of 6. Love you! xx
I don't regret staying up really late because you posted 🌦💓 - also, I literally just found your channel a couple days ago but I'm so in love with your videos and you've been so helpful and inspiring thank youu
Pinking shears don’t like super thick fabrics or multiple layers. Maybe pink before attaching layers? Also having a SUPER sharp pair of pinking shears makes it MUCH easier! 🥰 Love you Wendy!
hey wendy! can you please try making those ruched tops that have been really trendy recently? i don’t know how to describe them very well but only the bust portion is ruched.
Awesome video Wendy ! Fraying - I would totally invest in a serger. That will save you so much time and will totally finish off any interior seams. :-) They run about $299 - $399 low end pricing, but totally worth it. Love your videos. :-) Pocket attached without using pins - there is a double stick adhesive tape that is used for quick hemming and it is phenomenal. Just what you would need for tricky curves. Once applied it will be much easier for you to stitch without bunching. I've been sewing for about 30+ years and am always inspired by your videos.
Hi! We did cargo pockets in class and this kind is hard! You did a great job on them :) A couple things that might help in the future: -The band that goes around the pocket only needs to be one layer and doesn't need to be interfaced. You want it flexible so the pocket can lay flat when it's empty instead of sticking out. This will also be easier to use your pinking shears on! -To attach the pocket we drew the finished shape on the garment in chalk, lined up the pressed edge to that line, and topstitched it on. Hope this helps!
So odd. I live in France and i hear people calling any sort of sweater with front closure a gilet and when we went to buy my husband's suite the salesman called the vest a tailleur (the same word for tailor) anyone else in France that can comment?
@@mellie4174 I agree with your definition : a "gilet" is a sweater with front closure, but different from a cardigan which is a bit longer. Also, a "tailleur" is a suit for women, that's weird it was used for your husband (vest) 🤔 Usually a "tailleur" is made of a skirt and a blazer jacket.
The way you sewed the cargo pockets was actually good, either way works! I would recommend the 2nd option as the easiest to avoid having to do-undo-redo haha. You're right, it seems like a long process to be massed produced, but that's how they are actually attached... sewing people have SO much experience and skill that they're able to do it quickly. It's just practice 😉
Love the work you did with the pockets, but for the overall look, I like the green outfit better. But you know, Wendy, it's not just the final look that most of your fans are probably enchanted with, but the whole process that you share with us - it's so inspiring! I've wondered for a while, but your struggle with pinking shears is now really prompting me to ask: is a serger on your wish list? After getting my Brother 1034D years ago, I have never looked back. A serger is an absolute game changer, both in the way it simplifies the creation process and in the way it elevates the finished product. The only time I use my pinking shears now is before washing fabrics, so they don't create a tangled mess of thead in the washing machine. I trim the edges slightly and it's never too much effort, since it's only one layer of fabric being trimmed. I am hoping to see you use a serger in your videos one day.
You can sew the pockets from halfway down, along the bottom and up to half way on the other side and then go from the tops to that point, it's much easier. Hope that made sense :) I have a degree in fashion and i love watching your creative ideas!
Wendy, if you look at a pair of mass produced cargo shorts, the pockets are top stitched on from the outside. Fold and press the raw edge under, pin pocket in place, top stitch to attach pocket into desired place. Back stitch at start, corners, and end to keep pocket from being torn away by weight of treasures in pocket. Happy sewing
Omg your so cute! I'm just learning to sew and I'm still so confuse but they way you explain things helps me alot. I'm so excite to learn and better myself sewing skills with you!!!
Hey Wendy :) I have been soo impressed by your videos lately! Have been watching and loving you for a long time, and love the unique styles and ideas, perfect concepts, cuts and music! Keep it up! love from Austria!
Love your videos! I have been sewing for most of my life and highly recommend getting a serger for fabrics that fray. I bought an affordable one and love it! (It’s a brother lock 1034d) It was hard to get used to but after some practice it’s great!
your videos are helping me survive lately , usually i watch them and just love but lately ur my survial method. i just ordered my fist loom and cant wait to make something beautiful while at home with my kiddies during all of this. best of luck wendy x
Hey there! Before I say anything else, I´m sorry for my bad english, I´m from germany. For the Pockets, you could mark the pockets on the fabric (front or backside) and then pin the pocket in some places like the beginning, the end, the center on the bottom and the curves. That´s one way how i learned it :) I think it´s much easyer.
Thanks this was a great video i love the vest! Also the black look without the coat was super fun. I have similar feelings about pinking shears and got a pinking blade for my rotary cutter. So much easier to use!
the solution to the pocket problem is so simple. I took a look at an army jacket i had and it looks like they ironed the pocket the same way you did but only top stitched it from the outside. there was no sewing on the inside of the pocket at all. i hope that makes sense!! also i want to make that stretch lace top and gloves combo. i just need a place to wear it!! such a good idea!
Hi Wendy, I'm a fashion design student and wanted to commend your efforts for sewing on the pockets. However, there is a bit of an easier way to attach cargo style pockets and I hope I'm able to explain this clearly. I would start by pre-ironing all your seam allowances on both sides of the panel pieces (the long stips of interfaced fabrics) so that the strip is ready to go. Then for the pocket pouch piece, I would attach the "U" side (the bottom of the pouch) to the side panel ONLY and leave a gap on the sides so it's not completely finished. Then I would do the small topstitch. By leaving it unfinished, you'll have a little more room to maneuver when stitching it in place. I would then mark where I wanted the pieces to sit on the vest and pin the band with the half attached pocket pouches to the vest. I would sew the other side of the panel to the vest. Then, I would finish the side edges of the pocket pouch by stitching the pouch and band together and then completing the topstitching on the front. Lastly, I would add the pocket flap. Traditionally, attaching a cargo pocket would require you to topstitch really close along the side panel through the vest to attach it, but if you didn't want that topstitching there then you would have to complete only half the pocket to maneuver around your machine, attach the long panel to the vest, then finish off the pocket. Hope that sort of helped, either way, I love how it turned out!
Hi Wendy! Idk if you’ll see this but I’ve used pinking shears before and it’s meant to come out as a clean zig zag cut edge with minimal fraying (it was explained to me that it’s hard for the fabric to fray when it’s cut in opposition to the weave which pinking shears naturally do). I’m not sure but I don't think your scissors are sharp enough so you might need to sharpen them or get another pair 😅 good luck & thanks for the great video ❤️
